Lynn Cohen, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Delaware Valley Chapter, and Alana Mauger, Regional Communications Manager, discussed the local impact of their relief efforts across the five states affected by hurricanes Milton and Helene, they talked about the volunteers who are trained for on-site emergency work, helping local agencies feed and shelter refugees, distribute supplies, coordinate government operations, and accessing damage.  More than 100 volunteers from the greater Philadelphia area have deployed and the local chapter has lent ten emergency and mission response vehicles.                              We talked about the role of the volunteer at the Red Cross, from working blood drives, delivering blood, responding to fires, and installing smoke detectors.  They described their signature programs, including their emergency training, the first aid, CPR and lifeguard certification classes, their annual ‘Sound the Alarm that installs thousands of free smoke detectors, and their disaster preparedness resources.     We talked about the ongoing need for blood, the American Red Cross is a major supplier of the nation's supply and any interruption in collection can cause a shortage. They gave us a rundown of who can give, virtually anyone over 17 – 16 with parental permission – who is feeling healthy that day.  They stressed the need for whole blood and platelets for trauma, cancer and sickle cell patients.   Call 1-800-REDCROSS or go to RedCrossBlood.org to find a collection drive near you, to register and to download their Donor App that allows you to pre-check your status to save time at your appointment. For more information about training, volunteering, how to prepare for disasters go to redcross.org or call 1-800 RED CROSS.  You can donate to their relief efforts by texting HURRICANES to 90999.

All I want to do is talk about Madonna

Kenny and Mark re-string their banjos to break down BOTH versions of this fan favorite ballad (?) from MDNA. Topics include family prenups, Sex and the City's Bunny MacDougal (as well as Charlotte and Trey's doomed marriage), Marian Seldes, Lynn Cohen, Muni Long, Free School, the veteran Alain Whyte, Morrissey's Your Arsenal, MIKA, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, corsets, J Lo and Ben Affleck, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Ricky Gervais, Larry David, William Orbit's rewriting remixes, and the appeal of a Classic Six on the Upper East Side. Plus, Madonna starts soliciting cash from her audiences - and appears on The Marriage Ref. “Wondering where it all went” indeed!

Because We Love Making Movies

Today we welcome back one of my favorite guests, Film Editor BRETT BACHMAN. Last time he was on we spoke about his entire career including MANDY & PIG! But today is a special Halloween episode, and I wanted to do a deep dive into a film he edited…called THE VIGIL…it's a masterful folk-horror tale — written & directed by Keith Thomas , photographed by Zach Kuperstein with amazing performances by Dave Davis & the late, great Lynn Cohen.  It's a wonderfully unique movie and if you love horror movies like I do, please go check it out. We talk about how Brett approached cutting scenes in Yiddish when he didn't speak it, how he worked with Keith Thomas to build tension and dread, and how horror should always be about people and emotions if it's going to work. It's a great conversation about the joys and pains of making a film and how every single movie is a custom job and a life experience unto itself. Dig it! RECOMMENDED VIEWING: The Vigil, Jaws, Don't Look Now, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, and oh, the movie that pulled Brett kicking and screaming into the genre: Drag me to Hell. #filmmaking #podcast #podcasting #filmpodcast#hollywood #cinema #movies#horror#thevigil#keiththomas#firestarter#zachkuperstein#folkhorror#filmediting Learn more about your ad choices.

Shari Berman's movie, My Life as Abraham Lincoln, is a journey with a woman desperately trying to unravel the tragic mystery of her own mind. It's also a joyous love letter to films and film genres Shari most enjoys. Shari also directed Sugar, a rock-and-roll movie about middle-aged women making the most of what could be their last moment to shine (even if it's only on “MILF-at-Loser-Tube-Dot-Com”!). Denis marveled at the film's bass-player, June Millington, a kick-ass guitar player from the all-girl band, Fanny.Shari is pulling her next production together, Pink Mist. For starters, it has muslim immigrants, neighborhood bullies, a yiddish ghost and a tween amputee. Denis is looking forward to seeing where this all goes, and how Shari will weave her sense of humor into the tale. Shari is producing Pink Mist with actor/producer Michael Cuomo. She highly recommends Michael's film, Happy New Year. One of the lead roles will be played by Lynn Cohen, who is also well known for her character Mags, from the Hunger Games. Shari's husband, Chris Benker will be the director of photography.Shari edited the web series, Switch, a dramatic exploration into the real life experiences of people who work in BDSM dungeons.

The supporting cast is peppered with great New York actors -- Lynn Cohen, Ben Shenkman, John Benjamin Hickey, Geneva Carr and Robert Lupone -- and quick cameos from the likes of Tim Robbins, Janeane Garofalo, Edie Falco and Salman Rushdie.   Dan and Vicky discuss the romantic comedy and give their opinion on whether Helen Hunt pulls off her passion project.  Dan also catches us up on his work travels -- from Saratoga Springs to Paris -- and Vicky gives us a quick health check.  We hear about all the cool stuff they've been watching, from the top of Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain to the dusty pit of Mad Max's Thunderdome; from the heights of Lucio Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling to his bloody vision of hell, The Beyond.  There's also lots of love for comedian Maria Bamford and her Netflix series Lady Dynamite and the film adaptations of Stephen King's Salem's Lot and The Mist.
