Send us a textToday we're discussing the highly anticipated brand new book in the Hunger Games world: Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins. We go back in time (yet again!) to the 50th Quarter Quell, also known as Haymitch Abernathy's Hunger Games to answer all the questions we still have. How exactly did he become a victor and the gruff but lovable mentor we all grew to love in the original trilogy? What happened to Haymitch?!This book is full of so many amazing “easter eggs” and tie-ins to the original trilogy. It fills in SO many satisfying blanks while still leaving a little bit up to interpretation. We're ready to pick this book apart and make all of those connections with you as we celebrate this amazing book and get ready to close this Hunger Games chapter (for now). If you've been following along and watched our “From 1984 to Hunger Games” dystopian themes in media and literature episode then you know we're fascinated with everything about this genre and need to delve into this discussion! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley had never read it before. The debate currently on the book talk table is whether or not books (and the act of reading) are inherently political. We'd encourage anyone who has a doubt in their mind to read this series… with themes like media control, a totalitarian regime, and rebellion, it's hard to see how it ISN'T political.Episode 5 covers book 5 (or 0.75?): Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star reviews. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (yes, with a keyboard…), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, and discuss ALL the easter eggs. Then we wrap this up with some surprise questions and some excitement for next week's final Hunger Games episode because we give our wrap up thoughts, our overall reviews, discuss the movies, and announce our next miniseries starting soon! We can't wait to see you there! Mentioned Source:“We Already Know How Sunrise on the Reaping Ends. For our Quarter Quell, Jeff & Linc go LIVE through their Fantasy Football draft. Might be a bit crazy, so our apologies there, but they boys wanted to celebrate their 25 episode mark a little different than normal. Hope you enjoy!
Dystopian is so back baby. Karly & Mia's jaws were on the floor when they heard the news that Suzanne Collins is dropping Sunrise on the Reaping, the fifth installment in the Hunger Games series. The girls can't wait until March 2025, but until then they will have to be content with speculating every fan theory under the sun about the second Quarter Quell, starting with Haymitch's family and backstory, Maysilee Donner, and for the love of god Suzanne please give us Tigris as a stylist in the games Suzanne said the question of "real or not real" seems more pressing every single day, and we couldn't agree more. In a surprise to no one, this past weekend the girls had an interesting encounter at a bar. The question of the hour: can a Harvard-educated man tell the difference between plastic surgery and natural boobs? You're about to find out.

Catching Fire chapters 3-4 The PAX pox won't keep me away from recording! We've got lots to catch up on after taking a week off for travel, and we spend some time chatting about the PAX trip (thanks to everyone who came to say hi!) and Liz's exciting new musical venture. We've got two rich chapters to discuss this week too, with mostly high highs and a few low lows. What works? Katniss's character development! Peeta's new role! What doesn't work? Katniss's District 11 savior stuff still feels kind of disrespectful. What might work? The Quarter Quell, but how could they possibly make the Games more evil?! Plus, when we open card packs we learn what the Cornucopia looks like in the movie and ??????????
Episode 25, The Quarter Quell. This is Better Than Average at its finest, zero quarter given. No edits, no reruns, a true and unabridged Chris and Jay adventure. This week we recap Chris' experience training with a Jiujitsu legend, 2023's Pan American Champion and lord of the Butteryfly - Adam Wardziński. We find out how Jay got schooled by Carl and his Graco Roman Wrestling and we look back on Tom Aspinall's epic performance at UFC 291, is it time for us to see Tom vs Jones? Don't worry, its not over till its over and there is plenty more crammed to our first quarter. We talk upcoming BJJ and UFC grappling events as well as some of the best submission finishes in MMA and we discuss Jay's diminishing vigorousity and charlatans in the health and well-being sector. Chris offers to give Jay an official life reading. Jay sets his sights on an old rival and Herc gets handed his notice. Its all there. Its all recorded live and the result, as always, isn't perfect but it is Better Than Average.

Her home, District 12, has been reduced to rubble, and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is now the brainwashed captive of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). At the same time, Katniss also learns about a secret rebellion spreading throughout all of Panem -- a rebellion that will place her at the center of a plot to turn the tables on Snow. The Quarter Quell just got a whole lot more destructive as the victors prep for their unexpected return to the games. Katniss and Peeta adjust to their new strategies and work to make alliances, but are unsure of who they can really trust. Meanwhile, the looming rebellion seems to be taking hold of all the districts with whispers of uprisings ringing through everyone's ears. Meggie and Laura are probably a little too excited to relive the rereading of the latter half of Catching Fire, but that's okay! We have a great conversation this week about characters exerting agency in The Hunger Games! We of course discuss Katniss a lot as she actively pushes the plot forward -- from volunteering to ending Coin, she constantly forges her own path in a society that gives her so few choices. We also explore not 'playing the game' in the Quarter Quell, Peeta painting Rue's burial, and characters like Pollux and Lucy Gray.

SynopsisThe Hunger Games (2012)Every year, in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of the 12 districts to send a boy and girl tribute between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete in the Hunger Games: a nationally televised event in which the 'tributes' fight each other to the death until one survivor remains. When Primrose Everdeen is "reaped," her older sister Katniss volunteers in her place as tribute to enter the games and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts and knowledge when she's pitted against highly-trained and fierce tributes from all of the other districts and has to think quickly on her feet to survive. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)Along with fellow District 12 victor Peeta Mellark, Katniss Everdeen returns home safely after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Winning means that they must leave their loved ones behind and embark on a Victory Tour throughout the districts for a couple of days. Along the way Katniss senses a rebellion simmering upon the capitol - one that she and Peeta may have sparked - but the Capitol is still in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Hunger Games - the Third Quarter Quell - that could change Panem forever. Past victors will be reaped in the 75th Hunger Games the Third Quarter Quell. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)Following her rescue from the devastating Quarter Quell, Katniss Everdeen awakes in the complex beneath the supposedly destroyed District 13. Her home, District 12, has been reduced to rubble by the Capitol. Peeta Mellark was kidnapped by the Capitol and is now brainwashed and being held captive by President Snow. Snow wants Peeta to forget everything he had loved about Katniss. At the same time, Katniss also learns about a secret rebellion spreading throughout all of Panem - a rebellion that will place her at the center of attention and she will have to turn the tables on President Snow. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015)Realizing the stakes are no longer just for survival, Katniss Everdeen teams up with her closest friends, including Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne and Finnick Odair for the ultimate mission to gain peace. Together, they leave District 13 to liberate the citizens of war that has torn Panem apart more than it has ever been. President Snow becomes obsessed with destroying Katniss Everdeen and everyone and everything she loves. What lies ahead are mortal traps, dangerous enemies and moral choices that will ultimately determine the future of millions of people.LinksHeadphonesNeil The AppSubscribeSupportTwitterWebsite Support the show and get early access to upcoming content!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/headphonesneil-reviews. It’s the Quarter Quell, bitches! Or maybe a less murdery reference to something that happens every 25 years (episodes). We can finally rent a car!!! Is that better? Anyway, wow what a wild ride. Episode 25 features a sober Jackie who always says every word and phrase correctly on the first try, and an emotionally stable Jill who talks about a science thing and then is thinking “...wait, was that even science? What does buying clothes have to do with science?” for the whole rest of the episode and then realizes while she’s writing the show notes that it’s about the environmental impact of fast fashion which definitely IS science but she also definitely did NOT say any of that during the segment. Anyway we hear the jury’s still out on science (an Arrested Development reference that feels less funny now because people actually seem to not think science is a thing or important or real) and the jury is definitely still out on Daylight Saving(s) Time. Does that tell you what the episode is about? Okay, byeeeee!
This week, Brandon and Gabby talk about The Hunger Games series and the new prequel novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that Gabby has just started reading. They discuss the original trilogy's largely "controversial" love triangle, the dystopian society portrayed throughout the books, how we think the Capitol and its people evolved over the years between the time of the war and when Hunger Games takes place, and give minimal spoilers to the new book --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Welcome to Tacos and Turntables the real Episode 25!! During this episode we discuss what we have been watching recently and give each other some suggestions on a few tv shows and movies we should all watch, but the real meat off this episode is Jesse, James, and Mike trying to convince Josh that there was good music released in then 90’s (spoiler alert… there wasn’t…). Lehrersprechtag feiert Quarter Quell.

Welcome to another FULLY RANDOM episode of Some Things! This week we take a break from entertainment and sports and focus on that ridiculous random nonsense that you all seem to love so much. Of course, there's more Am I The Butt Hole and Guess The World Record segments, but there's also plenty of storytelling and opinion sharing that will be sure to put a lighthearted smile on your face. Enjoy!
The Oscars 91 was last night, and how boring is that? 91? Bleh. This week the boys find new ways for the Award Shows to tighten up their runtime and bring in a bigger audience. Ladies and gentlemen? It's showtime!

Connect with Brian Matiash and Sharky James on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (all @NoNamePhotoShow). Did we mention SUBSCRIBE?!!! Please? ;) Welcome to Episode 25, everyone! That's probably 24 more episodes in the can than both hosts expected, but who's counting? The stories covered in this episode share the theme of branding and how some photographers choose to market their brands. Our first story involves a photographer whose brand is used to limelight and controversy. We're talking, of course, about Peter Lik and the recent confirmation that he had composited a recent super moon photo even though his initial description made no such claim. The second story comes from a video shared by Youtuber and photographer, Jessica Kobeissi. Despite billing herself as a professional photographer and resource, she made the tragic—and rookie—mistake of no maintaining any sort of backup for her work. So, when her sole external hard drive crashed while traveling, she had to cough up $4,000 to recover the data. How does this even happen anymore, people? It's episode 250 and thus a fine time to return to form with Patrick, Charlie, and Ryan! 00:00:00 - Mars is dead, long live Mars! Mars used to have oceans, active volcanoes, maybe even tectonics. So what happened? The guys explore how it might have become a hunk of rock we keep having to rescue Matt Damon from. Also, there's a whole book series on how we might (fictionally) bring it back to life. 0027:57 - However it got that way, Mars is now dry enough to leave one mighty parched. Let us quench. Patrick begins with a beer left behind in his fridge by Ryan, a Siamese Twin Ale from Uncommon Brewers located in the birthplace of the show, Santa Cruz, California. Charlie expertly extracts the hot bean juice from an exquisite Ganesha Espresso bean for 28 seconds at 201 degrees C at 9 bars of pressure. Ryan fires back with a Kerberos Tripel our of a double-walled growler, a three-headed beer for the three originals being back together. 00:34:50 - Is the Loch Ness Monster real? No. It's super not real. BUT, Google decided to play along and put some cameras in the loch. This somehow becomes a very deep conversation on the philosophy of science and the role technology plays in shaping our reality. Go figure. 00:59:34 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like unexpectedly deep conversations; most people skip them if able to. Ryan begins with a new recurring donation from Sonya P. Thanks, Sonya! Charlie fields an energetics question from Jacob M. about the stillsuits featured in the novel Dune. Patrick finished with a question from Graeme N. about the aquatic ape hypothesis of human evolution. Ryan and Patrick argue again because why agree on anything ever? Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! Music for this week's show: Nothin' On You - B.o.B. Straw Dog - Something Corporate Get It Faster - Jimmy Eat World

We talk about the recently released Mighty Morphin Power Rangers short film starring James Vander Beek and Katie Sackhoff. Should kids shows like this grow as their audiences do? With the release of his latest film, Focus, we assess the career of Will Smith. His recent roles haven't been the successes his earlier works were. Finally, we review the 1993 cult classic True Romance from writer Quentin Tarantino. It's long been a favorite of John's and Tim just saw it for the first time. For our March 13 podcast we will be reviewing 1979's Breaking Away. Watch it and then join us for the conversation. (Oh, and stick around at the end for a brief talk about adult tones in The Empire Strikes Back.)

In Episode 89 of Fireside Chat, we start out by discussing The Hunt, a new Hunger Games-style reality show that has been ordered by the CW. EW has summarized the show as follows: "In 'The Hunt,' 12 teams of two are dropped into the wilderness without food, water or shelter. They must compete in a game where they'll rely on their physicality, survival skills and hunting skills to endure the harsh conditions and 'capture' one another." What do you think? Is this a bad idea? Are you horrified and/or disturbed? Or do you think it sounds like a fun concept? We then do a round of Catching Fire Pick a Page, so get your books ready! We spend the rest of the show pulling topics out of our grab bag. Update: All the topics we pulled out of our grab bag are listed below! Did Katniss and Peeta name their children in a Harry Potter manner after their dead loved ones? (from Matilda) Would you rather face off against Cato or wrestle Thresh? (from McKenna K.) Crackpot Theory: Johanna and Finnick were dating before the Quarter Quell. (from McKenna K.)

This landmark episode focus on Chapter 3 of Catching Fire where questions airsed. Would Katniss be different if she lived in the arena? Would Katniss have been weaker or stronger if her father was still alive? What type of mentor would Katniss be and how would it effect her emotionally? Would Catching Fire been better if it had an action packed start? The fan favorite segment, Dark Duels has a comeback with President Snow and Cinna fighting to the death. Listener emails are shared with insight on Francis Lawrence as the new director and celebrations in Panem.
