In this episode of JavaScript Jabber, Charles talks about the new direction he has for the company. He wants  to drive people to the point that they have the skills that make people want to hire and work with them, to teach them how to ‘Max out’. Today the panel the skills that developers need to progress in their careers: social skills.  The panel talks about their observations from work that the people who advanced and grow in their career were the ones with social skills, not necessarily with technical skills. The company wants to get stuff done, and if your social skills are getting in the way of projects getting done because you can’t work with others, you are not that useful to the company, and you will be stuck in the lower ranks while others who may not have the same technical skills will rise in the ranks because they are pleasant to work with. Mani talks about his personal experience getting laid off for lacking these soft skills. But then he read the book 48 Laws of Power by Robert Green, realized his shortcomings, and started to apply just one lesson from the book. Within 6 months, he was promoted. Mani delves deeper into the first lesson taught in 48 Laws of Power, Never Outshine the Master. Fundamentally, this means that you don’t try to prove in meetings how good you are, or that they’re wrong, or that you think that you are better than them. The more you the aforementioned things, the less likely you will be to get promoted or trusted. Mani talks about how he used to do these things and how it cost him multiple jobs. When he put this lesson into practice, he changed his methods and the boss started to like him, leading to his promotion 6 months later. The panel discusses this lesson and what benefits can come from it.  Mani shares another lesson that he learned through the story of a friend trying to get him to invest in his business. After Mani refused to invest multiple times, his friend stopped asking him to invest, but instead asked him for business advice. Eventually, Mani invested in the business because when he saw that his friend was influenced by his advice, it engendered trust between them. The panel agrees that if you want to influence someone, you have to be influenced by them. It is important to treat someone as a person rather than an asset or wallet, and ensure them that their investment is not their end goal. One of the most fundamental social skills that you must be able to like people, because other people can smell manipulation.  The panel transitions to talking about the paradoxical nature of social skills and that they are often the opposite of what you think will work in a situation. Unfortunately, there will always be difficult people to work with. To illustrate how to work with difficult people, Mani shares the story of how Gengis Khan was convinced not to destroy a city of artists and engineers by his advisor, Yelu Chucai. Gengis Khan agreed because Yelu Chucai was able to structure his plea in a way that would also benefit Gengis Khan.  The conversation shifts to how to conduct an interview to see if a candidate will fit into your team culture. First, you must know what you’re looking for and understand your team culture, and then ask for stories of when they accomplished something in the interview. If every story is all about how they did something and they don’t include other people, then that may indicate their self-centeredness. They discuss the Ben Franklin Effect.  For those listeners wondering where to begin with all this self improvement, Mani has read over 2,000 books on business and offers a course on his website, 2000books.com. Mani Vaya is the founder of 2000 Books. He is a Physicist and Electrical and Computer Engineer. Mani spent 13 years in the tech industry rising up the ranks to manage billion dollar cellphone projects at a Fortune 500 company. However, he realized that ambitious entrepreneurs must read often and constantly feed their minds with great ideas. Thus, 2000 Books was founded.   Today, I’m sitting down with Mani Vaya who bootstrapped his company after leaving the corporate sector. He has been able to grow 2000 Books into a profitable and cash flowing business. In today’s conversation, we talk about how he took his simple concept and executed it very well. My biggest takeaway is why we must focus more on reading and reading comprehension in the sense of understanding the value of reading books and how to read books more effectively. So give this episode a listen, take some notes, and then try out the methods we discuss.   In this broadcast, Mani and I talk about:   What inspired Mani’s business 2000 Books How did Mani’s business vision pivot in the early stages Does Mani run into any legal issues when selling summaries of their books What is Mani’s process in getting permission to use an author’s work In what ways does Mani choose which books he offers through his company How does Mani summarize a book and what is his investment personally How can someone get the most value out of a book for maximum learning Roughly how much time does it take to get a good understanding of what a book is about What is the different between speed reading and actually comprehending what you’re reading What triggers can you look for when reading paragraphs Why reading thoroughly helps you understand and remember ideas more clearly Can you still get value from a book if you do a speed read of it Why you should only speed read some parts of a book, not all of it What are the different levels or phases of reading Why you must think about what you’re trying to extract from the book you’re reading How can you make the most of audio books What note-taking software does Mani use to take notes while reading Are summaries useful   How to Connect with Mani:   10-best-books YouTube Podcast    Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches   Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes   How You Can Support In The Trenches   Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches? Andrew Evans talks about the versatility of Firebase CLI utility and its use as a platform for younger developers with little experience on CI/CD or any type of cloud deployment. It took Andrew a year to get proficient in Jenkins whereas with CircleCI he had a much easier learning curve. Andrew then mentions another article he wrote entitled “How the AngularFire Library makes Firebase feel like Magic”. They also discuss whether CircleCI matches up to Jenkins on a larger scale workflow deployment. Andrew gives the example of a weather app named “Goose Weather” he is working on that uses “NgRx” that has a more robust workflow. He mentions that initially he was working on it for a CapitalOne blog but then took it up as a side project and started working on it by himself. They decide that even though Jenkins owns the market on large scale workflows, CircleCI’s ease of use is a very strong feature. Andrew also mentions that although he didn’t have a chance to test CircleCI on a high-level enterprise project, he feels that it would be a good experience. They also briefly compare the Jenkins and CircleCI on ease of rollbacks and license fees. Shai shares his own experience of how he also really likes Netlify because it automates the commit process like CircleCI. They briefly touch on DevOps. Andrew shares his own experience using CircleCI to do deployments to AWS. He feels the documentation and the blogs really help with the learning process. Andrew explains the meaning of: EWS: Elastic Container Service ALB: Application Load Balancer ELB: Elastic Load Balancer” The panelists jokingly wonder whether Andrew should give them 50% of his profits from the weather app Goose Weather because he basically outed himself to CapitalOne on the show by revealing he was working on it on the side.      Links Deploying to Firebase with CircleCI https://blog.angularindepth.com/how-the-angular-fire-library-makes-firebase-feel-like-magic-1fda375966bb https://goose-weather.firebaseapp.com/weather https://github.com/andrewevans02 https://twitter.com/AndrewEvans0102 https://rhythmandbinary.com/ https://medium.com/@andrew_evans AIA-099-firebase-and-angularfire2-with-david-east-and-jeff-cross/ Picks Shai Resnick: http://exploringjs.com https://youtu.be/gwlevtaC-u0 Joe Eames: Movie: Alita: Battle Angel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7pYhpJaJW8 Charles Wood: The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right by Atul Gawandi The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker https://www.2000books.com/-by-Mani-Vaya Andrew Evans: Artemis by Andy Weir https://www.traversymedia.com/

They are not so up and down. Thoughts on Breathing There are instances every few days where you can feel overwhelmed, frustrated or confused. A simple breathing technique that anyone can do is just, breathe in to the count of 5 and then breathe out to the count of 10 and that is a very powerful exercise because it gives control back to your parasympathetic nervous system; to your pre-frontal cortex and away from your limbic brain. Suggested Resources Book: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand App: Airplane Mode or Off on your device :) App: www.dhamma.org Learn to do a Vipasanna Meditation taught by S. N. Goenka Bullying Story I have always been scrawny. In college, I was the shortest kid. Thankfully, somehow I grew taller after that. I'm still skinny. Yeah, there was bullying in my college days and people made fun of me and people physically bullied me because I was the smallest kid. I did not use mindfulness to deal with this. I was resentful of the guys who treated me this way. I tried to avoid them and I kind of hated those guys. I don't think I was understanding enough at that point to be able to use any kind of mindfulness to deal with this. I chose not to dwell on this as I look back in my life. There are so many failures in my life, but I want to keep on programming the right story to myself. I feel like I bully myself sometimes because I realize this goal [a certain goal] didn't get accomplished. That's what I call self-compassion towards myself. There's a great book on this topic by Kristin Neff on self-compassion. Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind by Kristin Neff. I feel like I have so much to accomplish that I don't have the time to reward myself [for small accomplishments]. I do go down to the beach here in San Diego and those are very rewarding moments.

Think and Grow Rich is one of those books you see most often on the recommended reading list of people who have achieved really great things. The book was written by the commission of Andrew Carnegie. Based on interviews of over 500 people in history who now we know as great men in the early 20th century, he’s commissioned this book. He interviewed people, such as Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, Wilbur Wright, Howard Taft. This book is amazing. I read it so long ago. It was first published in 1937. It has sold more than 70 million copies. It gives it the distinction of being the all-time best-seller in the personal success category. Today’s episode is about Think and Grow Rich for real estate investors. The perfect person to bring on for this is a person who I know and respect, a friend of mine. His name is Mani Vaya. Mani is the founder of 2000Books.com where he interviews some of today’s top authors. Over the last five years, Mani has read over 1,000 books in the field of business and personal development. Get this, over the last few years, he has been reading seven books a week, which basically averages out to one book per day. The first book that revolutionized his thinking was Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. As a real estate investor, it made sense to bring him on to talk about the book and how it ties in with real estate investing.
