Pinterest0 Facebook 0 Twitter 0 LinkedIn WhatsApp 0Shares If you have signed up to email newsletters from any of the big internet marketers, I am sure you would have heard about the launch and the discounted offers on Long Tail Pro – a keyword research tool. There were a ton of emails floating around and pretty much everyone recommended this tool. In fact a lot of marketers use this tool. A few days before Long Tail Pro was re-launched, there was another keyword research tool that was launched – Niche Genetics, which pretty much did the same job as that of Long Tail Pro – but with a difference that Niche Genetics helped you find profitable Niche and Long Tail Pro helped you find long tail keywords. How is this different? I still remember buying the “Keyword Elite” software from Brad Callen for about $197, when it was released about 8 years back. Then I found Market Samurai and then Micro Niche Finder. I bought both of these and if you are asking why, then the answer is plain and simple. I was confused, overwhelmed and struggled with the entire activity of researching keywords with the first 2 softwares. While I got a refund for Market Samurai, I couldn’t do it for Keyword Elite because by the time I tested it, I was already out of the Money-Back guarantee period. Market Samurai is a great tool and a lot of marketers use it, but somehow I felt it was just not for me. I was really overwhelmed with the many filters and options in there. Finally I found Micro Niche Finder and this is the tool that I am using until today. Almost all of these softwares use the same source for their data – Google’s Keyword Tool. The only difference lies in how they present it with some analytics of their own, so that you know which keyword or, niche to go after. Over the years, as Google changed their Keywords tools to the Keyword Planner and restricted the data that was available, these softwares also changed. But still their source remains the same. So, the question is – Do you really need a paid software when Google Keyword Planner is FREE? Let’s take a closer look at Long Tail Pro – This software adds a few aspects to the research. The source of the data for Long Tail Pro is also the same. But it uses a confidence score to tell you how hard or, easy it will be to rank on the search engines for that specific keyword. In addition to that it also gives you some additional data in the form of Domain Authority, Page Authority, Moz Rank, Domain age, # of backlinks etc. all of which will help you evaluate and analyze your competition. If you were to do all of these individually, you would have spent a lot of time doing it. Same is the case with Micro Niche Finder. It uses a competitive measure called as SOC or, Strength of Competition to evaluate the competition. So, what these tools basically does, is that they speeden up the process of keyword research. You can save a lot of time if you use these tools. But do you really need them – You might not. If you know the basics of what to look for while researching a keyword or, a niche and you are ready to spend time doing that, then you can do that with the help of the Google Keyword Planner tool. Doing Keyword Research the Right Way! What is keyword research and how does it differ from niche research? These are 2 terms that are used as synonyms, a lot of times but in reality they differ. In fact keyword research is just one part of niche research. While keyword research involved researching keywords that people use to search for something, Niche research involves a lot of other things like profitability of the niche, demographics, ad costs, content research, market research etc. Niche research is the first thing you need to do as you plan for your business. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dkspeaks/message

SEO - 9 Ways to Get Targeted Traffic Part 1. The Online Marketing Show Episode 109

Hi, welcome to the online marketing show, this is Joey Bushnell. And welcome to the next episode of the online marketing club mini-series. In the last episode I gave my top 9 ways to drive traffic which are SEO, Search advertising, Display advertising, content marketing, organic social media traffic, social advertising, email advertising, affiliate traffic and retargeting. In the upcoming episodes we are going to be exploring these 9 traffic methods in more detail and today we are starting off with SEO. What is SEO? SEO also known as search engine optimization is a method to get into the organic rankings of the search engines for the keywords that are relevant to your business. When someone is looking for your product or service or related information, they turn to search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. There are more search engines but these are the main 3 and the biggest by far out of the 3 is Google. Often when people are talking about SEO methods they are in fact referring specifically to getting ranked in Google. Why is SEO good? SEO traffic is buyer seeking traffic so it's doesn't get any better. You get in front of the people in your market when they are at the height of their need to buy, they are deep into the buying cycle, they know they have a problem and they are looking for options to solve it or they know what solution they are looking already and they are looking for someone who can offer that solution. For example if someone types in the search query, cosmetic dentist in London, there's a very high chance this person is looking for a cosmetic dentist in London and are ready to spend money with a London based cosmetic dentist who can fix their smile. If you were a London based cosmetic dentist, you'd to be on the first page for that term. Now apply this to your niche, no matter what your niche is there will be some super hot keywords that would be incredible if you were able to get first page rankings for. Another cool thing about SEO, is that when a search engine is ranking your website at that top of their search rankings for that solution, it's a good trust factor too, a nice little seal of approval if you will, so traffic does not come much better than SEO traffic. What's bad about SEO? Well SEO is not straight forward to it mildly. There are no guarantees. It's Google search results, it's bing's own search results, it's yahoos own search results and at the end of the day what they say, goes. They don't owe you anything. They don't have to rank your site even if you think they should. They can change their algorithm anytime. They can penalize you and rank you lower, if they think you're trying to game their system. Another important factor is, there's only 10 spots on the first page and 98% of searchers will never look beyond page one so only a small percentage of businesses will reap the benefits of organic search traffic. You have to have a decent position on the first page or this traffic will be sent to your competitors websites instead. It really is all or nothing, being on page 2 might seem great compared to page 10 but really it's not going to make a big enough dent to be significant. There's no halfway house with SEO, it's first page or nothing and guess what, you aren't the only business in your market who want to first page. It's a long term strategy too, that's necessarily bad but having been in SEO myself, I know firsthand that generally people want results fast and that's not always possible. SEO can be expensive, either if you do it yourself which I don't recommend, you will be required to spend a significant amount of time to get results, if you hire an SEO company who are good at what they do then you will need to pay them accordingly and it's not cheap. However, price is relative it's all about ROI so provided you do pick a good SEO company and your website does a good job of converting visitors, you should easily see ROI. Who is SEO for? SEO fit's pretty much every business. The kind of business is that is not for are fly by businesses that come and go in a short space of time, with SEO being a longer term traffic strategy there's no point bothering with it on a short term project. Other than that if you are expecting to be in business for the long term, if you're expecting your website to be around for years to come you're going to want to have an SEO strategy. How to do SEO? SEO is a huge subject, we could literally spend days going through all there is to know, so if that doesn't sound like much fun to you but you do still want the benefits that SEO gives then find a good SEO company. If you'd like to learn SEO yourself, you can get complete training in the online marketing club. In the meantime, here's the extremely shortened down, extremely simplified summary version. First of all you need to do your keyword research, you want to find keywords which are relevant to your business, that have a decent amount of traffic and if possible, low competition. You can do this by using the Google adwords keyword tool or buy a tool, my keyword tool of choice is Market Samurai. Once you have your keywords, there's 2 parts to SEO called on page and off page factors. On page factors are the ranking factors that are found on a web page itself. You control these elements and you can design your web page in such a way that you essentially tell search engines what your page is about. These on page factors include having enough text on your page, having outbound links on your page, having your keyword phrase appear in your title tag, meta description, header tags, alt tags, url and first paragraph. Also make sure your keyword phrase density is right, you want to include the keyword phrase several times but you don't want to overdo it either, Google calls over doing it, keyword stuffing and they will penalize you for it. There's more to on page optimization but that's the basics. The next part is off page factors, you have less control over this. Once Google understands what your page is about via your on page optimization, they will then look for signals to see if your page is relevant and popular. They look for signals such as how long people spend on your site and your bounce rate, which is whether they browse around your website or leave immediately. They look to see if your page has been shared on social media sites. They look to see if people are linking to your web page from their own web page. Again there's tons more to off page SEO, lots, lots more but that's a brief summary. Traditionally people have tried to use trickery to game the system but Google and the other search engines are fight back against this as hard as possible to make sure they maintain the integrity of their search results so be very careful with the SEO advice you follow. Things that worked a treat a couple of years ago, no longer work and will get you penalized. Look Google knows everything so don't try and outsmart them, go with them, do as they want you to do and what is that exactly? Google wants a good experience for their users, they want their users to find precisely what they are looking for. So if someone is looking for your product or service, provide clear, helpful, useful pages which will help that person find it. If they are looking for information then provide content that gives them the information they are looking for. If people find what they are looking for they will spend time on your web page, they will be less likely to bounce. They'll be more likely to share on social media or give you a back link. That's the way for natural SEO and it's the safest way to do it, sure there's other ways speeding it up and helping that ranking to happen quicker but it's got to built on that foundation, work with Google not against them. So that's SEO, if you want to get real good at SEO and really experience the traffic surge SEO can bring check out the online marketing club, it may well be for you. In the next episode we'll be discussing, search advertising, see you then!

Mo Mastafa is an internet marketing consultant from Cardiff, Wales and the author of the book "Getting found Fast". He specializes in SEO and helps business owners and web masters to get to the top of Google. In this interview Mo reveals step by step how we can can climb the rankings and make our way to the top of Google, Bing, Yahoo or another search engine for our chosen keywords so that we can get huge amounts of qualified traffic Click the play button below to listen to the "How to get to the top of Google" interview... Click here to get your hands on Mo's Free SEO report "The 7 Deadly SEO Mistakes" Below is a little taste of what was covered in our "How to get to the top of Google" interview. For the full interview, click the play button above right now... Q. What is SEO and why is so important? A. SEO is the process of optimising your pages to help them get found in the major search engines, it's how to get to the top of Google, Yahoo & Bing. SEO also involves things that take place off your website, such as building quality backlinks that will further push your web pages up in the rankings and allow you to get free search engine traffic. Q. How do we go about finding the right keywords to use? A. This process is known as keyword research. To get to the top of Google, you have to decide which keywords you want to get to the top of Google for, right? There are a range of tools that you can use to help find great keywords for your website. One such tool is the Google Keyword Tool. It's a free tool and it'll show you exactly how many people search for a particular keyword to do with your business each month. A more advanced SEO tool that you can use is Market Samurai. This is a paid tool that will let you see a lot more data relating to your keywords, such as how many competitors they have. This is really important because one of the biggest reasons businesses fail to get traffic from the search engines is that they optimise their web sites for keywords that are just too competitive. Market Samurai will also allow you to track your rankings in the search results, which is another reason why you may want to invest in a paid SEO tool. Q. How do we optimise our web pages for a particular keyword? There are many places that search engines will look, when they try to figure out what keyword you are trying to rank for. One of the most important places to put your keyword is your page title. This is what shows up in the search engine results and is also the part that shows up at the top of your website browser window. Another great place to put your keyword is in your page URL. For example, if you are looking to rank for the keyword “internet marketing consultant”, you may want to name your page www.yourwebsite.com/internet-marketing-consultant.html Also try to use LSI keywords (Latent Semantic Indexing). LSI basically means keywords that relate to your main keyword, such as “internet marketing expert” or “online mentor”. A great way to find LSI keywords is to do a search in Google for your main keyword, and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for “related keywords”. You'll find them there. Using LSI keywords as part of your page content will also allow you to get to the top of Google for keywords besides your main keyword meaning even more traffic. And you'll be able to see this happening when you look at your Google Analytics stats. Also, getting other people to put your keyword in the link text (aka anchor text) back to your website can improve your rankings. Q. What are long tail keywords? Most people think long tail means the length of the keyword phrase, when in reality it has a lot more to do with the volume of searches a keyword gets. Basically, long tail keywords are keywords that get very low search volumes, but they are often a lot easier to rank for in the search engines simply because there aren't as many people trying to optimise their websites for them. If you want to learn more about the long tail, I recommend you read the book “The long Tail” by Chris Anderson. Q. How do we optimise our website without needing technical skills? There are many ways to optimise your website. If you've had your website built by a third party, you can usually ask your web designer to do the SEO changes for you. Alternatively you can outsource it to a web developer or programmer on websites like elance.com or freelancer.com. If you have a CMS (Content Management System) built into your website, you should be able to optimise your web pages yourself, simply by filling in the SEO related tabs. And if you happen to be using a Wordpress.org blog, there are many great free plug-ins that you can use to help you get to the top of Google by optimising your pages, such as the “All in One SEO” plug-in or the “Yoast SEO” plug-in. What else Do We Discuss? There's lots more that we discuss in our content packed "How to get to the top of Google" interview... We also talk about importance of backlinks and whether quality or quantity is more important. We also discuss a ton of different ways for you to get backlinks from different websites, and even how to get others to build backlinks for you! You'll also learn the difference of nofollow & dofollow backlinks, what they mean and how they work. Mo Mastafa will also give you a simplified definition of what PageRank is and how to go about getting backlinks from high PageRank websites. He also shares a simple, but clever little backlink strategy to get links from websites that will likely have high PageRank in the future! He also gives his take on bounce rates and how they affect your website... especially your conversions rates. Finally we give our take on what Google thinks about “the bounce” and some simple ways to lower your bounce rates and increase conversions! There's over 30 minutes of SEO goodness packed into this interview, so to hear the full interview and learn lots of cools SEO strategies to help boost your search engine rankings fast, I recommend you listen to the interview now by pressing the play button.

Today we are joined by special guest co-host Ryan Park from FoodCraftsmen.com Sharing Your Podcast  You can choose to make your show available on other sites by enabling the embedding feature in the Powerpress plugin. Go to powerpress, settings, and under the media appearance tab there is a media links area where you can choose to make a show have an embed links. Now anyone in your audience can put this on their website. For me, it makes it easy to put on my blog and other sites. In the case of the Podcast Review Show, I can put it on the School of Podcasting site and not worry about it accidentally going down the feed of that show. Ryan found a great article about a new player that people may be using (I would want to test this to make sure it doesn't mess up your RSS feed). There is a neet plugin that works with the html 5 player call Time Jump that I want to investigate. An Affordable Solution For Podcast Gear As I'm still in the Amazon dog house, I was looking for ways to find affordable podcast gear. I have used Same Day Music in the past, and they have a new plan that allows you to make PAYMENTS on gear (typically two). So if you want to buy a mixer, but its $269 you can make two payments of $135.  They call this Speed Play. You make your purchase and have 60 days to pay it off - no interest. Best of all if you're not in New Jersey, they don't charge sales tax. Check them out at SamDayMusic.com (affiliate link). How Many Keywords in iTunes Identify and Use the Right Keywords Just like in traditional SEO, high visibility starts with an understanding of the keywords your target audience will be searching for. You can use your favorite keyword tool to get started. Additionally, you should spend time in the App Store and look at the most popular and successful apps. See what words they're using to promote their app. This will give you additional ideas on picking the right keywords. How Do You Find The Right Keywords? There are tools like Long Tail Pro and Market Samurai that I've heard Pat Flynn talk about. They are both good (I think Pat is using Long Tail Pro a bit more these days). You enter words that you feel people might enter to find your store and see which ones are more popular. You can type in your industry and see what terms people are talking about, and again are more popular. Then you can use these in future shows. In a way its not so much different than SEO for the web. Once you have a list of targeted keywords, you need to put them in the right places. First, start by using them in your show name (if it makes sense).  This works similarly to page titles for traditional SEO. Additionally, try to use your keywords in your name field.   Cool Wordpress Theme? I'm hoping Mike Howard is in the chat today as I want to talk to someone who is using the Avada Wordpress theme. This thing looks so cool, and is only $55 at ThemeForest.net Currently is the the #1 sellign theme on Themeforest. I'm hoping Mike Howard is in the chat today because he uses this. How to Quickly Find Long Tail Keywords for More Free Traffic Why long tail keywords? So, if you consistently publish new content, but you don’t really do any keyword research, you’re missing out on a lot of free traffic that you could get from just doing some simple long tail keyword research. You might know exactly what your audience wants in the way of content, but it’s really important to actually do some research and see what exact types of phrases your customers and prospects are typing into the search engines. If you will just spend an extra 5 or 10 minutes per piece of content that you publish doing some long tail keyword research like I’m going to show you in this post, over the next few weeks you will see a big increase in the amount of search engine traffic that you’re getting to your blog or website. I recommend you get Long Tail Pro since it’s much, much faster than the other tools out there. Long Tail Keyword Research Process When you are doing your long tail keyword research, I recommend that you find at least three relevant keyword phrases for every piece of content that you create. Overtime this will dramatically increase the amount of free traffic you get from the search engines versus not doing any keyword research at all. Step One: Fire Up Long Tail Pro Longtail Pro is my keyword research tool of choice since it lets you into her multiple seed keywords at one time. The platinum add-on gives you the average keyword competitiveness function, which is the only thing I look at now when deciding whether to optimize for a keyword phrase or not. This saves me the time from having to try to analyze the competitiveness based on 20 different factors and it’s very predictable and reliable. It will also save you a lot more time versus the other main keyword tools that are out there, because of the fact that the search itself and the returning of the keywords happens much more quickly than the other tools, and when combined with the fact that you can do all your seed keywords in one search it saves you a lot of time sitting there staring at your screen. Step Two: Setup Your Campaign Inside of longtail Pro, you simply entering your campaign name. This isn’t necessarily your main seed keyword although I can be, but the best thing is to just use a keyword or phrase or name don’t you remember, because once you have a lot of campaigns and set it won’t tell pro you want to be able to tell them apart. Step Three: Apply Filters When you’re looking for longtail keywords, the only filter that really matters is the minimum number of words. I always set this filter to at least four words. This will give you keyword phrases that are much easier to rank for. The more words in a phrase, in general it’s going to be easier to rank and get traffic for. If you’re creating content for a topic that is pretty competitive, and there’s a lot of content and websites and products out there already for it, there’s going to be a lot more relevant keywords available to you. So in cases like that I would suggest you set the minimum number of keywords to five or six or maybe even more. Step Four: Enter Your Seed Keywords Again, Long Tail Pro let you start with multiple seed keywords. So you should start out with more than one, just type in every keyword phrase related to your topic that you can think of. That way, you’ll get a lot more relevant keyword phrases to choose from. Step Five: Click “Generate Keywords” This step is pretty self-explanatory: you simply click on the big yellow button at the bottom of Long Tail Pro that says ‘generate keywords’. This should only take 60 seconds or so to return hundreds and hundreds of highly relevant keyword phrases. Step Six: Cherry Pick the Good Ones As you can see in the example below, this is a great keyword phrase for several reasons. First, it is a keyword phrase that has six words in the phrase. This will make it much easier to rank and get traffic for. It also has a very strong search volume of close to 1000 monthly exact searches. It also has an average keyword competitiveness of only 30. Like I said earlier, when you’re looking for longtail keywords, you want to see that the average keyword competitiveness is close to 30 or below. Step Seven: Pick a Few Really Easy Ones You always want to choose a few really low competition keywords when you’re doing long tail keyword research. Even if the monthly search volume is down around 100 exact monthly searches, these quickly add up as you optimize your different pieces of content. The other big benefit of optimizing all of your content for all of these longtail keywords, is that over time the more longtail traffic and keyword rankings that you get, the better your site and content will start doing in the search engines for higher competition keywords. This keyword phrase below is a great example of a very long tail keyword. It has five words in the keyword phrase, it has an average monthly exact search volume of around 100, and it has an average keyword competitiveness score of only 25. That’s it for this training, I hope you learned something that you can use in your own business to start finding and ranking for more long till keywords, which will send you a lot more free search engine traffic overtime. If you already have Market Samurai and it works for you, you don’t need Long Tail Pro. But if you don’t have a premium keyword research tool yet, I highly suggest you make the investment in Long Tail Pro… All the time it will save you and traffic it will result in will be well worth it. How to Double Your Sales In 20 Minutes (Really)

In this post I am going to show you how to literally double your sales- maybe even more- in about 20 minutes of work. If you take some extra steps you can do even better. First, let me tell you a story that illustrates the power of this concept. I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t think of this sooner since this is my own story… but that’s how it goes sometimes. Here’s the story… Several years ago, I was a door-to-door pest control salesman. We would go to different cities, mostly across the South, and we would walk through neighborhoods all day long and try to sell a one-year pest control contract to homeowners. It was rough work, but for the guys that could hack it, it was pretty good money. These companies that trained us had gotten the sales pitch down to a science, so that as long as we delivered it how we were supposed to, we would sell close to 1 in 20 homeowners that we talked to. The guys that were good refined this further and could sell 1 in 8, sometimes a little better than that. Either way- 90% of the success of the sales pitch hinged on one key aspect… the fact that it was a special offer, and that it was time-sensitive. We would explain that if you were to look up the company online and call, the price for the initial service was $150. But… since we were “in the area” that day building a route, we could offer the initial service for just $75 if the service was done either “today or tomorrow”. So in case you missed that, we were offering the initial service for half-price, as long as the contract was signed right then and there so that the service could be completed within the next 48 hours while the technicians were in the area. This process worked very well… I was always amazed that we could knock on someone’s door, be a complete stranger, and within 20 minutes walk away with their credit card number written down on our sales contract. Luckily for them we weren’t scam artists! How To Use This In Your Business… You can probably guess what I’m going to tell you how to do, right? I have done this with several of my niche sites that I sell my own info products on, and it works like crazy. What you do is, you go into your main autoresponder sequence that sells your product to prospects (you DO have an autoresponder sequence setup, right?), and after the initial sequence, all you do is add in 4 more emails that promote a 50% off sale. Each email counts down to the last day, so on the first email you say, “I’m offering a half-off sale for the next 4 days, etc…” The next email will say, “3 more days to get my product for half off”, and so on… How to Really Take It to the Next Level… There is a little plugin that I use that has made this “half-off” sale work 10 times better, because it makes the scarcity very real, and thus that much more effective. It’s called “Scarcity Samurai“, and it’s from the guys behind Market Samurai. You install this plugin, and you activate it on your half-off sales page, and you set the timer to run out after 4 days. This timer begins separately for each unique visitor to the page… so you have an evergreen 4-day timer that starts once someone lands on the page, and the page will actually expire after the 4 days. I think you can see why this works so well. One of the most powerful things you can do in your marketing is force your prospects to make a choice… when your product is always up for sale, you’ll make sales and you can do very well. But, when you offer a sale and the scarcity is real, thanks to Scarcity Samurai, you’ll be amazed at how many more sales you’ll get that you wouldn’t have otherwise…  Questions? Comments? Leave them below… The post How to Double Your Sales In 20 Minutes (Really) appeared first on StrayBlogger.

Long tail keywords have always been a great strategy to add to your SEO mix, and lately it’s become a bigger and bigger topic. With that, there’s been several different new keyword tools released specifically for finding long tail keywords. Well… that’s great but there are already ways to do it with tools you already have and free tools. In this post I’ll show you how. How to Find Long Tail Keywords for Your Websites Before I start this, if you’re serious about building websites, keyword research, and SEO, you should own Market Samurai. I’ve purchased several premium and not-so-premium keyword tools just to see what’s out there, and Market Samurai is what is the one that has stood the test of time for me. To find these keywords, I use two tools: Market Samurai Amazon.com I made a video where I walk through exactly how I find these keywords, and I think you’ll get a lot of ideas from watching this: [contentlocker] The post How to Find Long Tail Keywords for Niche Sites and Amazon Sites appeared first on StrayBlogger.

If you find this post useful, please take one second to like, share, or tweet it. Thanks! How often do full days slip by without you doing any actual work on your online business? Chances are it’s most of the time… meaning 4-5 days a week where you do absolutely no content creation , back link building, or traffic generation. It’s an easy cycle to get into… you sit down to “work”, but you need to check your email first. There’s a few interesting offers or blog posts that you decide to read, and before you know it two hours have gone by. Okay… before you really get started you should probably get a snack and go to the bathroom so that you can put in a few solid hours without having to get up. Once you’re in the kitchen, you decide that you’ll just watch one episode of your favorite show off the DVR before you jump into to a massive work session. Alright, now that you’ve watched an episode, you’re going to get really productive. But you need to check your email real quick before you get started so that you don’t miss anything. You also check your stats because you might have made a few cents from Adsense or maybe even a Clickbank sale. You open up Market Samurai or Google Keyword tool to find a good topic for the article you’re going to write. You see a few interesting keywords that you haven’t thought of before… but these are good enough to start a new site on. Your mind starts running wild with ideas about how this new site could make money. You go to Clickbank to see if there’s any related products you could sell, and then you check Amazon as well. It looks good… there’s products to market and it seems you’ve found some really great keywords. Then your wife/husband/kid/phone interrupts you with an urgent issue. “No problem” you think… “tomorrow I’m going to get a ton of work done.” Getting Real Work Done at Home is Actually Very Hard to do I’m sure the above scenario sounds painfully familiar, or at least parts of it do. Even as I write this blog post, my mouse keeps wanting to open up my Kindle ebook stats after every sentence (my latest addiction). If you have kids, it’s 10 times worse. I don’t yet, so I’m guessing at that figure but it might even be 20 or 30 times harder to put in a few solid hours than for someone with no kids running around the house. There’s just something about being at home that makes it harder to do real work for extended periods of time… I’m pretty sure it has something to do with not having anyone there to tell you what to do. In fact, you probably have someone there competing for your time. Your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse is probably telling you to help with the kids, clean something, or they just want you to hang out with them. Another problem is that no one takes your “projects” seriously until you’re successful at it. If you’re making millions as a pop star, you’re awesome. But if you tell your friends and family you want to be a famous singer, they roll their eyes and tell you to get a job. There’s a lot of other scenarios or issues that make it hard to get work done at home, but let’s move on to my best tips for getting things done despite the issues I’ve mentioned. My Top 5 Productivity Tips For Getting Things Done Identify your “prime” work time, and take advantage of it: This will be different for everyone. If you have kids and a family, the best thing for you might be to get up an hour or two earlier to work, or maybe after your kids are in bed. If you have an hour or two right when you get home before your spouse does, that is your prime work time, and you cannot afford to use it checking emails or watching TV. The bottom line is, you need to either figure out when your prime work time is, or create some prime work time. Once you know when it is, you do absolutely nothing during that time except real work. Identify your avoidance loops, and preempt them: An avoidance loop is a series of events or time wasters that you engage in when you’re about to actually get something done. For example, my standard avoidance loop is to check my email, then various stats, then Yahoo, ESPN, and DailyMail to see if anything crazy has happened. Usually nothing has, but there is always some interesting news stories that I end up reading. The first step to avoiding your avoidance loop is to identify it as such. Once you’ve done that, the next time you start your loop, you can step back and realize it, and stop yourself. Use a timer for solid blocks of work: There’s all kinds of specific productivity techniques out there such as the Pomodoro technique, but I like 50 minute blocks. These blocks are most effective when you identify one single activity. If you’re writing copy for a sales page, then when that timer starts you shouldn’t leave your word processor once during that block. If you’re writing a blog post, shut every other browser tab and do not leave your seat or your WordPress interface for the entire block. Do not check your email until you’ve completed your key task for the day: Whether you get up early to work on your online business or you work on it at night, when you walk up to your computer, identify the one key task that you need to accomplish for the day. If you’re just starting then this would most likely be writing an article for your site. Once you do sit down and turn on your computer, do not check your email or any other time waster until you’ve completed that key task. If you can make this a habit and something you do everyday, you’ll finally start to make progress. Even just a little real work done day in and day out adds up… most people let several days go by at a time without doing any real work and that just doesn’t cut it. Plan monthly > weekly > daily: Most people plan way too much or way too little. I have found the most successful way is to identify some key things you want to accomplish in the next month, then break those down into weekly objectives, and then into daily goals. For example, if I’m planning a new site and I want the site up and to have 20 pages of content on it by the end of the month, I would make a week-by-week timeline of what I need to do. Then, it’s easy to break each week down into daily objectives. As I mentioned in this post, I use a Blogger blog to track my goals and plans. Please take a second and “like” or +1 this post. This interview is with Chris Sorrell, who is an expert Amazon affiliate. He doesn’t use the Amazon affiliate program like most people- here’s the interview: What got you interested in starting an online business and how did you get started? Mainly being very disinterested in the world of work.  I started looking at whether selling on Ebay would be viable for me to be able to earn money from home, and for a while it went fine until Paypal problems forced me to reconsider.  I then started looking into other ways of making money online, and so gravitated towards the usual Clickbank stuff for a while.  It was probably ‘The Rich Jerk’ program that made me aware of ‘online marketing’ in the first place. Did you have any failures early on and what did you learn from them? I certainly failed, especially with my early experiences of Google Adwords and some technical issues of setting up websites etc, but looking back now, it was just part of of the learning process.  I kept going and simply learnt that trial and error is part of the game.  Also, getting good at just 1 or 2 traffic generation techniques is good enough for most marketing needs. What’s the main thing that made the difference for you in becoming successful? I just used the confidence booster that some initial success gave me to force me forwards and keep learning.  I took the view that if you can make $10 a day, then if you keep at it, $100 a day and more will soon come your way.  I also started looking out for certain marketers once it transpired that they were worth buying from and learning from.  I got some material by Brian G Johnson and Mark Ling which definitely helped me along. What’s the best piece of “big picture” advice you would give to someone just starting their online business? I would tell them to remember that all the rules are the same as the offline world.  You need consistent traffic, leads and sales to prosper.  Focus keenly on proven traffic models and become very good at a handful of things, rather than trying to figure out dozens of techniques all at once.  List building, relationship building and traffic generation techniques are definitely some of the best things to get good at and continue learning about. What is your system for sitting down and getting work done on a daily or weekly basis? I just have a work room where there’s no other electrical devices.  I find that working in the same room as your tv, xbox, and whatever other electrical stuff you own is just too much of a distraction.  I get plenty more done in a quiet room with no distractions so that’s now what I do. What could you have done that would have made you successful sooner? I really wish that all those times I heard someone say ‘build a list’ and ‘the money is in the list’, I’d taken action there and then.  I do well with my list building efforts now but I think like a lot of other marketers I got too distracted by other things to focus on it.  List building is now a big priority for me. What would you tell people just starting out that they should focus on? Try and work out what’s going to be the best fit for them.  Are they more interested in providing services or selling products?  Either way, you’ll need to get good at traffic generation, relationship building and work out what products are best to promote, or brainstorm some ideas about creating your own products. Why do some people succeed online and others never do? I think people get tired of buying junk products and simply decide to never bother with pursuing an online business.  The easiest way to avoid it is to remember that the rules of making money online are no different to the offline world.  If a product isn’t teaching you about leads, sales or conversions then it’s likely not to be worth getting.  Also, some people just lack the persistance to keep going through the early setbacks, which is just like it is in the offline business world. How has running your own online business changed your life? It has allowed me to be free of the horrors of working 9-5 and I’m a keen traveller, so getting away whenever I feel like it is a serious benefit to making your money online.  I spent nearly a month in Vietnam this February and will probably go to the Philippinnes or Thailand near Christmas time this year for at least 3-4 weeks.  None of that would be possible if I was in a regular job. What is your favorite software tool that you use in your business and why? I’m a fan of Magic Submitter for seo purposes and I stick to Market Samurai for niche research tasks.  But I’d say the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, SEOquake and Magic Submitter would be good enough to get anyone going if they were on a  tight budget. How did you come up with your strategy of making money with Squidoo lenses, and what steps did you take to get it to the level you’re at? I found a lot of Squidoo lenses on the first page of Google for various bits of niche research I was doing, so I decided to check it out and I found that you could use their functionality to promote Amazon products without having to apply to the Amazon associates program.  I then started building lenses one after the other with a solid, easy applied methodology and the traffic and money started coming fairly quickly.  I now manage the ones I’ve got and focus on outsourcing various tasks to keep traffic levels up. Your strategy for making passive income from Squidoo seems to be something anyone could do… What are a few key tips that will give a beginner a better chance of seeing success? Make sure your niche research is spot on from the start.  Without a good foundation then the rest is pointless.  Go after popular products that have lots of available and variable keywords to target and then focus your efforts on quality content and seo. What traffic strategies are working for you right now, and are there any that will always work? Long tail buying/product related keywords are always great to get traffic from.  They’re easy to rank for and bring in great quality traffic.  I think that’s a method that will be around for a long while yet.  Also, Youtube traffic via seo, squidoo lens comment swapping and occassionally PPC campaigns through Bing and 7search usually provide me with the traffic I need and are evergreen methods. If someone only has a few hours a week to dedicate to their online business, what are the 3 key activities you would recommend they focus on? 1 – Know what you want then find good people to do the work for you.  Websites like odesk, scriptlance and fiverr are all good places to look for people with the skills you’ll need. 2 – Try and find a focus group of like minded individuals or a forum where you can ask questions and learn the things you need to know in a short space of time. 3 – Try and become proficient at one traffic generation method, whether it be seo, ppc, social media or video marketing.  It will serve you well over time. Where can people go to learn more from you? The Ray Edwards Show is a weekly podcast dedicated to Internet Business and Leadership, and Productivity. My goal is to help you succeed with your online business, and this show is for you, whether you're a seasoned veteran who's been online for years — or you haven't even made your first dollar online! We can all reach for higher levels of success in business and in life! Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 This is a relaunch of my more “occasional” podcast. I owe my inspiration to get it going again to Michael Hyatt and especially to Cliff Ravenscraft. For a long time I have been thinking about re-starting this podcast but wanted to wait to launch it until I got it “perfect.” Here’s what I’ve learned: Perfectionism is the enemy of accomplishment. Ray Edwards My plan for the podcast is to focus on these core topics: Internet Business: starting, growing, and profiting from your own Internet Business. Marketing: practical steps for selling more of your products, services, and ideas. Leadership: the keys to leading yourself and others in a transformational way. Productivity: tips, tools, and tactics to help you get more done in less time. Writing: how to write for strategic influence. Spiritual Foundations: keeping first things first. Miscellany: freedom to talk about anything else I want. My intention is to publish a new podcast each week on Tuesdays, along with an outline (or “show notes” like these.) While you will be able to listen or download episodes here on my blog, it will be much easier for you to subscribe in iTunes. EPISODE OUTLINE I share the “State of Ray Edwards International, Inc” – and why it matters to you. Current reality: There are some significant changes now that we are operating in the “new economy”. What’s different about the “new economy”? A few key points for freelancers and entrepreneurs – these must be understood and internalized: The bubble has burst. Easy credit is gone. Houses of cards in the banking industry have come tumbling down. People have lost their jobs, their houses, their credit cards. The spending habits and market behaviors of almost all people have irrevocably changed, altered forever by the economic shift that took place recently. And if you’re waiting for things to get “back to normal”, this is your wake-up call… it’s never going back. This is the new normal. Get used to it. Adapt. Competition is at an all time high. And thanks to Google it is easier than ever before to find all your competitors in a few seconds. Nobody needs anything. In the Western World, even though we have experienced an economic shake up, we still have everything we need already. Yes, I know some people are in need and I am not ignoring them nor minimizing their needs – but I am also acknowledging that for most people, their needs are over-supplied. Do you have a roof over your head, clean water, and at least one meal per day? Then you are better off than most of the people in the world. To see how good you have it, check out how wealthy you rank in the world by clicking here. What does all this mean? It’s time to review and evaluate how you do everything you do within your business or practice. Does it measure up? Is it effective? Does it produce profit? Is it the best possible use of your time? That’s what I’m doing here – reviewing my current systems and findings. Hopefully it’s helpful. I offer the following with this caveat: I’m still workin’ on it, and I don’t always follow the system perfectly. But each time I fall “off the wagon”, I get up, dust off my britches, and climb back on. So far it’s worked pretty well. A “day in the life of Ray” is a busy one. Here are current projects I’m working on: 1. Private Client Copy Project. This was a big project, comprising 3 full video salesletters rewrites. This project was a beast in terms of time invested, but it was fun. And it paid well. 2. Private Consulting Client. This relationship translates to regular phone meetings, a small in-house launch every quarter or so, and reams of copy generated for upsells, ridealongs, retention, phone scripts, etc. This is a retainer + revenue deal, just like all my deals these days. 3. New Partnership. More info coming soon. 5. Writing Riches Member Site. This is a “coaching club” I run for those who cannot necessarily afford to hire me but who want to learn from my work, get me input, and receive training from me each month. 6. Book. My new book on copywriting, Writing Riches, is a #1 Best-Seller on Amazon.com. It’s the best deal I offer on training and is available as a softcover or on the Kindle. 7. Three books in progress. One is a business book (first draft completed),one is a book for Christ-followers on the importance and power of forgiveness (first draft about 75% complete) (this book is being folded into the next one), and one is a book about achieving true, lasting success, called Taking Back Tomorrow. 8. Two monthly newsletters. I write one for my clients, and one for paying subscribers. 9. Workshops. I am planning a small, exclusive workshop in my offices this Fall. It will be me and four guests… and you’ll get my hands-on help with your project. Plus, my team will even build your site for you! This won’t be cheap – the price is probably going to be around $5,000. If you’re interested, please call my assistant Kathy at 509-624-2220 and let her know. Acceptance is not guaranteed, as this is not for everyone. 10. Copywriting Protege Program. My students write for clients who either (a) can’t get on my schedule soon enough or (b) can’t afford my fees. My team writes your copy, I critique the drafts for re-writes, and then I approve the final work that is delivered to you. This means we can deliver affordable copy that still receives my “touch”. (To inquire about a project, please submit your request here: https://rayedwards.com/contact ) 11. Coaching Program. This is a time vortex for me, but it is profitable and rewarding. Still “testing” the best format and pricing. 12. Info Products. Retooling, simplifying, and systemizing. 13. Podcast. Already covered this earlier. HOW TO START AN INTERNET BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH IN 10 STEPS I also discuss how anyone can start their own Internet Business and sell their own ideas and expertise, if they follow these 10 steps: Research your market. Buy your domain name. Get hosting for your website. Build a site with WordPress + a Premium Theme. Create a Social Media “Wheel” Build your list. Drive traffic to your site. Build a community. Create solutions. Monetize. LISTENER QUESTIONS I also answered these questions from my listeners. “It would be great to have tips on how to choose a business that doesn't require so much follow up tasks like emailing your list regularly, etc. How to set up systems you can leave running and check in once in a while.” Daniel Axelrod “Want to start a health/wellness coaching business. Being able to gain clients around the world, have intergrated web-site and using media to change the health status of our country.” Marsha Warren Hays “How to find someone to set up your site who will do a quality job for a reasonable price. I could never set up a WordPress blog and get it to look professional, so I went with something else. It's OK, but I think WordPress would be better. I'd really like someone to teach me how to set it up myself.” Mila Clark EPISODE RESOURCES Links to resources I mentioned in the show: Michael Hyatt’s website. Cliff Ravenscraft’s website.
