How players evoke personal and subjective meanings through a new theory of player response.  In The Well-Read Game: On Playing Thoughtfully (MIT Press, 2025), Tracy Fullerton and Matthew Farber explore the experiences we have when we play games: not the outcomes of play or the aesthetics of formal game structures but the ephemeral and emotional experiences of being in play. These are the private stories we tell ourselves as we play, the questions we ask, and our reactions to the game's intent. These experiences are called “readings” because they involve so many of the aspects of engaging with literary, cinematic, and other expressive texts. A game that is experienced in such a way can be called “well-read,” rather than, or as well as, “well-played,” because of the personal, interpretive nature of that experience and the way in which it relates to our reading of texts of all kinds. The concept of the “well-read game” exists at the convergence of literary, media, and play theories—specifically, the works of Louise Rosenblatt's reader-response theory, Brian Upton's situational game theory, Tracy Fullerton's playcentric design theory, and Bernie DeKoven's well-played game philosophy. Each of these theories, from their own perspective, challenges notions of a separate, objective, or authorial meaning in a text and underscores the richness that arises from the varied responses of readers, who coauthor the meaning of each text through their active engagement with it. When taken together, these theories point to a richer understanding of what a game is and how we might better value our experiences with games to become more thoughtful readers of their essential meanings. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design and game studies at the University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal Titel kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist. For the first time, the Ten Pin Life Podcast is going LIVE! Sometimes a business or an industry is provided a major blessing in a person. Those star players are able to make a significant, positive impact on the people and processes around them in a short amount of time.  Bowling is lacking in star players overall, but we are blessed to have one of them joining us this week in Matthew Farber. Not only is Matt a gifted bowler (Junior Team USA 2013-2015, 2014 World Champion, 2018 Team USA & 5-time gold medalist) he is also devoted to being a great member of the bowling community. Matt is a certified mental health coach, has an MBA from McKendree University  and is a member of the team at KR Strikeforce. Previously, Matt was a part of the team at InsideBowling as well as Backstage Bowling where he produced some of the highest quality informative content in the entire sport of bowling. Partnering with the likes of Mike Shady, Shannon & Bryan O'Keefe and Mike Jasnau, they broke through the barrier of teaching basic concepts of bowling in an attainable way. And he's done all of this before turning 30... Needless to say, I am excited to have Matt on as a guest, but to also see where his career will take him, and how big of a positive impact he can make on the game we love so much. Ten Pin Life exists to tell the story of what it takes to live a life in bowling and to grow the love for the sport. If you want to learn more about the people, skills and equipment it takes to make ten pin bowling the greatest game there is, Ten Pin Life is for you. Here's a cool episode for you. Before I get started let's talk about these tracks. It's easy to overlook, when we talk about Maker Ed, that a lot of the greatest maker educators I know are makers themselves. Lou Lahana is also known on the interwebs as Techbrarian, and he wrote and produced tracks at the beginning and end of this episode. He's a great inspiration to remind us all, as Tasker Smith from MIT reminds us in this episode - we need stay inspired...consider it like facing turbulence on an airplane...put the mask on ourselves first. It's a different format: in this episode I reached out and asked some of my favorite Maker Educators to send me recordings where they just jam into the mic a bit about resources that they often recommend to other educators, or folks just interested in what they do. I'm so grateful to a rockstar group of five featured in this episode, and hope that we can make it a more regular thing.
