Mumps with Kristian Hoffman in conversation with David Eastaugh Mumps (sometimes credited as The Mumps) were an American punk band fronted by Lance Loud. Other members of the band included Kristian Hoffman, Rob Duprey, Jay Dee Daugherty and Aaron Kiley. Kiley and Daugherty were replaced with Kevin Kiely and John Earl (JED) Dennis. Shortly thereafter Dennis was replaced by Paul Rutner. Their first 45 RPM single was "I Like To Be Clean". Their second was "Rock & Roll This & That" with a double side B of "Muscleboys" and "That Fatal Charm". The recorded version of the song "Rock & Roll This & That" interpolated a short guitar riff from the Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get No Satisfaction", but in live performances, they would interpolate other riffs such as David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel". Mumps concerts were lively and featured energetic, expressive performances from Lance Loud and other band members on songs like "We're Americans", "I Believe In Anyone But You", "Strange Seed", "Brain Massage", "Scream and Scream Again". Mumps were a popular band at clubs such as Max's Kansas City and CBGB. They also performed at Irving Plaza and Maxwell's (Hoboken, New Jersey), and opened for the Ramones at Hurrah in August 1978. In spite of two independently produced 45 records they released, they failed to secure a contract with a major record label. Two compilations of their music have been released, "Fatal Charm" (Eggbert Records, 1994) and a remastered, 2-disc CD and DVD compilation, "How I Saved The World", in 2005.

iTunes         Spotify         Youtube           Patreon Michael Alago is a photographer, and author, and former Record label executive. At age twenty-four, he began a storied career as an A&R executive at Elektra Records that started with signing Metallica in the summer of 1984, changing the entire landscape of rock 'n' roll and heavy metal. He also worked in A&R for both Palm Pictures and Geffen Records and was thrilled to executive-produce albums by Cyndi Lauper, Public Image Ltd, White Zombie, and Nina Simone. Alago grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a large, spirited, and devoted Puerto Rican family. Through his early passion for music, art, theater, and photography, he soon found himself rubbing elbows with many downtown NYC scene makers, from Stiv Bators to Jean Michel Basquiat, Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County to Deborah Harry and Robert Mapplethorpe. As an underage teenager going to Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and various art galleries, Alago also began running The Dead Boys fan club. A few years later, he became the assistant music director for legendary nightclubs the Ritz and the Red Parrot. In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with HIV, which manifested into full-blown AIDS ten years later. He survived to continue his music career, but in 2005, he left music to pursue his other love: photography. Alago went on to publish three bestselling books: Rough Gods, Brutal Truth, and Beautiful Imperfections with German-based publisher Bruno Gmünder. He has since overcome his longtime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In his clean and sober life, he has reconnected with his family, continues to be a working photographer as well as record producer, and only through the grace of his 12-Step program is he able to live this big, beautiful life. In 2017, a documentary directed by Drew Stone and produced by Michael Alex on Alago's wildly successful career in music was released in theaters and on Netflix, entitled Who the Fuck Is That Guy? This week we return to our coverage from Moogfest with not one but two fantastic conversations with brilliant minds that helped discover some of the most exciting musical voices of the last few decades. First up is Daniel Miller, musician, producer, and founder of Mute Records, the label that brought the world Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and so many others. Daniel and host Lior Phillips chat about seeing his first concerts, buying his first Korg 700s, and his exploration of the UK music scene in the late '70s and early '80s. After that, Lior chats with Craig Leon, a man who has been at the intersection of countless musical moments in the US since helping to discover seminal punk and no wave bands like The Ramones, Suicide, and Talking Heads. Lior sat down with Craig and his partner, psych/folk/country musician Cassell Webb, to talk about Craig's time in CBGB's and Max's Kansas City and his work with Pavorotti, Cassell's first-hand experience with Buddy Holly, and so much more. Her new book is The Girl In The Back: A Female Drummer's Life with Bowie, Blondie and the '70s Rock Scene (https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Back-Female-Drummers-Blondie/dp/1617136875). Seventeen-year old Laura quaking within her skin while the bursting punk rock revolution explodes around her starts a band with her teenage friends called the Student Teachers. She's the drummer. They play legendary clubs CBGB and Max's Kansas City. They rehearse madly write songs and tour the East Coast, all between final exams at school. In comes Jimmy Destri from Blondie. He thinks the Student Teachers are terrific! And then he falls in love with Laura. He pulls her into the glamorous life of Blondie and introduces her to David Bowie. Bowie takes an interest in Laura's band, attends their rehearsals, and sets them up to open for Iggy Pop at the Palladium on Halloween 1979. It's exhilarating! It's the beginning of amazing success in rock 'n' roll! Until it all comes to a stunning stop. After playing a show at Town Hall in 1980, Laura is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “Because Sylvio is courageous, I was able to buy more hamburgers to keep up my strength, and more paint to continue painting,” said artist Robert Ryman about collector Sylvio Perlstein, who was a patron of his at a time when few others were interested. Born in Belgium, Perlstein grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where his family moved when fleeing the Nazis in 1939. Perlstein bought his first work of art from a florist in Brazil; over the course of the next five decades, he would add more than 1,000 works to his collection by artists including Man Ray; Duchamp; Carl Andre; Diane Arbus; Hans Bellmer; Magritte Solowitz; Donald Judd; Hannah Kirk; Max Ernst; Bruce Nauman; Edward Shea; and Andy Warhol—to name just a few. “For me, it was not even a collection. It was things that I saw, and I liked,” Perlstein says. “To tell you the truth, I never count them. I'm not well organized.” A selection of works from the Perlstein collection is now on show at Hauser & Wirth, New York (“A Luta Continua”, until 27 June). Reflecting on the differences between the art world then and now, Perlstein tells host Charlotte Burns: “Today, it’s not so much art anymore; it’s a real business. At that time, you could easily acquire works from the artist because it was more about friendship.” From exchanging diamonds for art with Man Ray to hanging out with artists in New York in the 1970s at the legendary Max's Kansas City, Perlstein talks about a life in art and his tastes (“ugly can be nice, too,” he says). “What does it mean, art? Anything. You can make art from shoes, from a nice bag, from a hat— it's also art. Everything is art,” he says. “Buy what you like.” Transcript: http://www.artagencypartners.com/transcript-sylvio-perlstein/ “In Other Words” is a presentation of AAP and Sotheby’s, produced by Audiation.fm.
