King Missile emerged from the art-punk underground with a sound that defies easy categorization. Blending elements of spoken word, surrealist humor, alternative rock, and performance art, the band is best known for its 1992 hit “Detachable Penis,” a deadpan monologue over a hypnotic groove that unexpectedly broke into mainstream consciousness. But King Missile is far more than a novelty act—it's the long-running vehicle for the singular voice of John S. Hall, a poet, satirist, and cultural observer with a sharp wit and even a sharper tongue. John S. Hall recently stopped by Thunderlove Studio, and we spoke with him about his career. LINKS John S. At the end of November, friends of SP Newton Gallery hosted an exhibition of paintings and cartoons by American artist Stephen Tunney. Many of those in attendance likely had no idea that these disorienting, vivid, and fantastical images were made by the same Stephen Tunney behind the indie rock solo project Dogbowl. When Stephen plugged his guitar in to perform some of those songs, the image completed itself. Indeed, Tunney has had a long and fascinating career, from playing guitar with cult band King Missile, recording with godhead of New York weird music Kramer, writing what has been called one of the "most disturbing novels ever written in" with a novel called Flan, to writing and playing songs as Dogbowl, it's a career that a two hour conversation couldn't possibly do justice to. Nevertheless, Adam here is going to try... FULL EPISODE LINKS Stephen Tunney Newton Gallery

We continue our discussion of Lucy Cook's book entitled Bitch: On the female of the species focusing on chapters 5 & 6 which covered variation in female genitalia, the evolution of the human penis, and maternal care. We spent some time talking about the baculum, a bone that is found in the penis of many mammals, but not in humans. Sarah described how intricately shaped the baculum of squirrels can be, as evident in the image below. From Bacula of North American Mammals by W. H. Burt, 1960Sarah also discussed a novel hypothesis presented by Jakovlic' that proposes and explanation for the loss of human baculum through male-male aggression. James wondered why human copulation lasts so long? What is the point of all that thrusting for minutes on end? We explored a couple of hypothesis that have been proposed to explain the exuberant level of pelvic thrusting typical in human copulation. James encouraged our listeners to look at the NSFW artwork of Jamie McCartney, a sculpture and photographer who has created a large portfolio of casts of penises and vaginas, and other secondary sexual characteristics, which clearly represent the variability in human genitalia. The second part of the podcast explored the myth of maternal care and how opposing neurological process can explain aggression towards babies or care and protection of babies. We explored how these process could help explain post-partum depression and how the modern medical process in child birth may interfere with the evolved bonding process that requires specific tactile, auditory, and olfactory cues shared between the mother and newborn. Opening and closing music is "May" by Jared C. Balogh.Interlude music was Detachable Penis from King Missile.
Phantom Electric Ghost Interviews “The Taste of Vomit” David Bupp III We discuss the new album “Indoorsman” i am a rapper and songwriter from Philadelphia. i focus a lot on lyrical themes of mental health, human connection, and emotions. my new record 'The Indoorsman' will be available on digital, cassette, and streaming on March 31st. about the album: “The Indoorsman” The Indoorsman is a story of hope ; the first glimmer of movement after a season of stagnation. A concept record exploring healing and growth through heartbreak and depression; the rediscovering of oneself. Seamlessly blending hiphop and indie pop, with hints of soul, r&b, alternative rock, jazz, and classical (plus maybe the only autotuned polka ballad?). Through dense metaphors, complex inner rhymes, and clever wit, the listener dives straight into the mind of rapper and songwriter The Taste of Vomit, and asks the question, 'How long have I been stuck indoors?'. Some notable features include Duncecap (from Backwoodz Studios), John S Hall (of the 'Detachable Penis' and 'Jesus Was Way Cool' famed band King Missile), HeirMAX (from Fake Four and Cold Rhymes Records), KOURAJ, Love Ulysses, and more. This week, Zoraida Córdova (aka Zoey Castille) joins us to talk about fantasy romance and why it is so hard to find it in the romance pool. We talk about speculative fiction, high fantasy, low fantasy, urban fantasy, contemporary fantasy, paranormal romance and more, all while trying to figure out just what makes something fantasy and not paranormal (we think we've cracked the code). We also talk world building, about maps, and about merman junk. Our next read along is Kylie Scott's Lead, one of our longtime favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org! Get the others in the series, too, while you're at it, because you'll probably want to read the whole thing. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful! Show NotesWelcome Zoraida Córdova! Zoraida writes MG, YA, and adult speculative fiction, and also romance under the name Zoey Castile. Puerto Rico is a US territory and residents of the island are American citizens. Why Moscow Mules are served in copper mugs.We love Norma Perez-Hernandez who is an amazing, exuberant editor at Kensington, and if you don't follow her on Twitter she should. Norma also was on the 2020 Publisher's Weekly Star Watch List. Zoraida's book The Vicious Deep answers the age-old question of “where does it go,” a similar answer is in Guillermo del Toro's movie The Shape of Water. Speculative fiction asks the question “what if” and is the big umbrella category for science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy (now Black authors in particular suggest we rename this contemporary fantasy), and paranormal. Reading strategies are for everyone: We love maps in fantasy, so why not in contemporary fiction?Victoria Avyeard was on Sarah Enni's First Draft podcast talking about world building. The Hero's Journey, or maybe the heroine's journey. NK Jemisin's lecture about the cultural iceberg shows writers how to build a world that goes beyond what's on the surface. An interesting thread from a YA librarian, and another from author Elizabeth May, about why and how romance plots in SFF are pushed into YA. Zoraida hosts a writing podcast with Dhonielle Clayton called Deadline City.Relevant music perormed by: Twin Temple, Marike van Dijk + Katell Keineg, King Missile, Dr. Octagon, and Led Zeppelin. He talks about the difficulty people have in calling what happened to them "trauma" and why the label isn't important. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, rock cellist Gordon Withers became fixated with the Washington, DC music scene early on, making pilgrimages to cities with killer record stores just to pick up new releases from influential bands like Jawbox. Fast forward to 2016, where Withers is now bandmates with Jawbox frontman J. Robbins in Office Of Future Plans -- not to mention a collaborator with BELLS≥, We All Inherit The Moon and The Pauses, among others. He's also known for releasing solo cover albums where the likes of Jawbox, The Joy Formidable and even Pink Floyd's iconic "The Dark Side of the Moon" are done entirely by cello, adding depth and new dynamics to the work he so greatly admires. Today, Gordon chats about being one of the first clients Gotta Groove Records ever had, some advice for those wanting to do Kickstarter campaigns for vinyl pressings, making his own Radio Shack catalogs as a kid, the influence of King Missile, an upcoming Jawbreaker project he's a part of, adventures in licensing when releasing an album worth of covers both digitally and physically, and much more. Visit gordonwithers.bandcamp.com to hear/purchase his solo work and officeoffutureplans.bandcamp.com to get acquainted with Office Of Future Plans!

Chad's done a bit more number crunching since this was recorded (see the posts on his Twitter account, which is @chadwpost), but this is a good introduction to the ongoing conversation about women in translation. A lot of this discussion is based on this post from Three Percent. This week's music is "Detachable Penis" by King Missile, which is sort of fitting. Also, just a reminder that because of some difficulties with iTunes, you may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the "correct feed" in iTunes at that link, or right here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/three-percent-podcast/id434696686 Or, you can just put this feed link into whichever is your podcast app of choice: http://threepercent.libsyn.com/rss Tell all your friends and family to also subscribe--that's what can get us higher in that Top 200 lit podcasts list . . . And it's also amazingly helpful in getting the podcast seen by more eyes if you can take just a moment to stop by iTunes to give us a quick rating (and a little review, too, if you're an amazing overachiever!). And, as always, feel free to send any and all comments or questions to threepercentpodcast@gmail.com.
WTF regular and clinical psychologist Dr. Stephen Dansiger has lived many lives while the rest of us were inhabiting only one: once a CBGB regular who played drums for the bands King Missile and Pianosaurus, he ended up getting sober, having a breakdown and finding peace again through a year-long residence at a Zen monastery. The practing Zen Buddhist for the past two decades then got a doctorate and masters in psychology to start running groups at treatment facilities. Now he and Dharma Punx/Against The Stream's Noah Levine have opened an outpatient addiction treatment center BLVD. Here he and AfterParty's Anna David discuss sobriety, rocker rebellion, breakdowns, meditation and much more.

All artists, no matter how successful, have experienced some horrifically embarrassing moment on the public stage. Unfortunately, when things go wrong, they tend to go wrong in front of hundreds of people. This week our team of "fundits" includes a writer, a musician, a filmmaker, and a theater geek sharing their most humiliating moments as artists. Guests include musician Chris Xefos (King Missile, Drop Quarters), writer Bucky Sinister (author All Blacked Out and Nowhere To Go), and musician and lapsed thespian Kurt Keppler (Fierce Antler). Hosted by filmmaker Danny Plotnick.
