Book Vs. Movie: Meet John DoeThe 1922 Short Story Vs. the 1941 FilmFrank Capra's 1941 film *Meet John Doe* is often described as “based on a story by Richard Connell and Robert Presnell.” Unlike Connell's famous short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the source material for *Meet John Doe* was based on a short story, “A Reputation,” which appeared in 1922 in Century Magazine.  The original work and the final film critique how newspapers—and media moguls—shape public sentiment for their own purposes. Starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, the film was a significant box office success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Story, with Capra opting for a more hopeful ending than the original. So which did we prefer? Surprise...it's a bonus episode! Have You Ever Seen #634 is another Ryan solo show. And in it, the monologue is about baseball players, journalists and a lot of liars. Meet John Doe's climax also takes place on Christmas Eve, so Frank Capra's rabble-rouser is timely in that way. It's unfortunate his speech-filled dramedy isn't funnier though, even if it's certainly inspirational. Gary Cooper plays a homeless man who isn't actually suicidal or an idealist, but Barbara Stanwyck had written a newspaper column saying he is...so they run with that lie. Meet John Doe ends up being populist v tycoon (a tycoon who highjacks the movement for his own ends) with a country galvanized by a forgotten man saying all the right things...even if he started out as a fraud. Can a movie be better than the story it's based on? Let's take a journey from short story to Academy Award Nominated film, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.  The Vintage Episode for the week is “The Bottle Imp”, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Be sure to check it out on Tuesday.  If you have found value in the show, please consider becoming a monthly supporter. Help us to help other folks like you. Please go to http://classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a monthly supporter today.  Classic Tales for Children: Volume 1 is now available. It includes the new recording of Pollyanna, bundled together with Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, and Alice in Wonderland. I thought of titles that would really go well together, so I pulled out all the stops. This anthology is perfect to listen to again and again. You can pick it up at classictalesaudiobooks.com by following the link in the show notes.  https://store.classictalesaudiobooks.com/classic-tales-for-children-volume-1-p366.aspx Ok, off the top of your head, what movies are better than the books they are based on? Whenever I consider this, I tend to come back to The Wizard of Oz and Ben-Hur. I think in these two instances especially, they expanded on the original material beautifully, to fit the medium of film. It's a transformative process, to move from story told only in print, to a story told by actors, artists, costumers, directors, set designers, stunt people, special effects artists, and all the other hundreds of people it takes to make a motion picture. I recently discovered I'm going to have to add the film Meet John Doe to my list.  Meet John Doe is a film released in 1941, directed by Frank Capra. It stars Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyk and Edward Arnold. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story, and it was ranked No. 49 in the American Film Institutes 100 years, 100 cheers list. It entered the public domain in 1969, and you can watch it for free many places on the internet, also on Amazon Prime. The film is based on the story “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell. Connell also wrote “A Friend of Napoleon” that we've heard recently, and is most famous for his short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”.  So first, let's hear the story “A Reputation”, and then look at what elements were modified and expanded on to create the acclaimed motion picture, Meet John Doe. Just a heads up – this story deals with suicide. And now, “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell. 1941's outrageous screwball romantic comedy, The Lady Eve brought together three of Hollywood's most dynamic and unstoppable forces: Barbara Stanwyck, in her peak year with five starring roles, including also Ball of Fire (Oscar nominated for Best Actress), and Meet John Doe; Henry Fonda, hot off his award-winning turns in Grapes of Wrath and Young Mr. Lincoln; and perhaps riding highest of all, Preston Sturges, who was in the middle of a run of seven giant hits as writer/director in the space of only three years – a feat that remains unequaled in Hollywood even to this day. Sturges was so hot that he became the 3rd-highest-paid employee in the world, and yet when the streak ended in 1944, his career crashed like no other. What remarkable ingredients fueled his artistic rise and fall? Why is his name only occasionally  recalled when the likes of Orson Welles, Peter Bogdanovich, John Lasseter, Wes Anderson, and the Coen Brothers point to his enormous influence?  And why are these cheeky, offbeat, incredibly witty films that delight critics and audiences so unfamiliar to Millennials? Can a Preston Sturges classic still resonate in today's culture? Find out in this episode of Film Generations. Have you seen that other Capra film in which the protagonist in a moment of crisis, attempts suicide on Christmas Eve? Join Mike and Dan for a conversation about Meet John Doe (1941), a film Frank Capra made five years before It's a Wonderful Life and which shares that film's celebration of the common man—the John Doe—living and working and dying across the country. We know we'd all be better off—and the country would be in better shape—if we acted like the people in the John Doe Clubs, so why don't we? How many of your neighbors do you know on a first-name basis? When's the last time you reached out to someone you don't know very well but you know needs a hand? Capra's film may seem like a collection of platitudes, but it's a cross between A Christmas Carol and Lord of the Flies and is absolutely prophetic of a film that would follow it thirty-five years later about another media-created sensation who's mad as hell and not going to take it any more! The University of Mississippi Press has published many volumes of interviews of notable directors; you can find the edition on Frank Capra here. And—did you know that Capra wrote a novel in 1966, not published until 2018? Neither did we. You can find Cry Wilderness here. Follow us on X or Letterboxd. Incredible bumper music by John Deley. Frank Capra is well-known for such top-ranked classics as It Happened One Night, Lost Horizon, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life.  However, his 1941 film, Meet John Doe, starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, deserves more love. It's often very funny but deals with some of the darkest issues of American democracy and demagoguery.   While sometimes labelled corny, its characters grapple with moral choices and the depths of despair – all while taking on surprisingly contemporary issues of fake news, voter manipulation, mass layoffs, mob rioting and the media's craving for sensationalism.  So does this 82-year-old film speak to a new generation of film lovers? What still seems timely and what now makes us cringe? Find out, when our young panel brings today's sensibilities to this time capsule from the Great Depression. What happens when the Hunter becomes the hunted? Join us today for Richard Connell's classic short story "The Most Dangerous Game!"Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" and published in 1924 in The Saturday Evening Post and was adapted into a film of the same name in 1932, starring Joel McCrea, Fay Wray, and Leslie Banks. He began his writing career when he was 13 years old when he covered a local murder trial for his father's newspaper in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1906. By the age of 15, he was a seasoned crime and sports reporter. His father became a Congressman and Richard then attended Harvard and went on to serve a year in France during World War One where he edited a camp newspaper called “Gas Attack.” When he came back to America, he got married and moved to Hollywood where he worked on many projects, his most notable being “Meet John Doe” in 1941.    John Bell is our narrator and he is also the writer, producer, and actor on the award-winning "Bell's in the Batfry" podcast, which can be found at http://thebatfry.libsyn.com/We are always looking forward to discovering our next writer, so if you are interested in contributing, please send us your short story of fewer than 5,000 words to cathy@widowmakerindustries.com Looking for your next book? Check out this review of the 1st book in the C. Mack Lewis's Fallen Angels Series, Gunning for Angels:   Top reviews from the United StatesWilliam E. Wallace5.0 out of 5 stars C. Mack Lewis is on the Side of the Angels in Her Debut NovelPrivate eye Jack Fox has a problem. He just can't seem to keep his business end inside his pants, and winds up flopping into the sack with just about every female he meets. But his overactive libido isn't Jack's real challenge. The thing that is turning his life inside out is the fact that Enid, the daughter that resulted from one of those one-night stands sixteen years earlier, has run away from her alcoholic mother and taken the Greyhound to Phoenix looking for the father she only recently learned she had.For his part, Jack didn't even know Enid existed. This is the situation at the beginning of “Gunning for Angels,” a fast-moving detective yarn by Lewis, a New Jersey native transplanted to Scottsdale, Arizona, who deftly juggles plot twists, humor and mayhem in this enjoyable debut novel. The story involves unwanted children and a few that are wanted far too much for comfort.Lewis's character, Jack Fox, is a solo operator working out of a hole-in-the-wall office staffed only by his secretary receptionist.A Lothario from the get-go, Fox is described by Lewis as "not handsome enough for Hollywood but too handsome for his own good." Practically the only women in the story he doesn't get between his sheets are his daughter and the receptionist. This lust-struck peeper is between clients when Enid, the result of his blast in the past, walks into his office, coat-tailing on a woman who wants to hire him to identify her birth mom.Eventually the two enter into an uneasy alliance. Jack, who was rejected by his own birth father, a cop and bigamist, can't seem to work past his guilt at having a teenage daughter he's never met. Enid, who is used to cleaning up her drunken mother's messes, is distraught by her abandonment.Despite their mutual distrust and fear, they join forces and struggle to come to grips with what seems to be a simple parental abandonment case but turns out to involve trafficking in child prostitutes, pedophilia and fraud.Oh, yes: and murder; lots of murder. The basic plot of Lewis's book is pretty grim stuff, but she manages to serve it up with dashes of wit that leaven the violent and gruesome nature of the story. Just when you are beginning to think that Fox is a competent investigator and all-around cool guy, he hits a banana peel and does a pratfall – usually with his newly-acquired daughter looking on.Case in point: in one scene Jack is boffing a client while Enid who has managed to sneak into the bedroom before him, hides in the closet, trying to keep from blowing her lunch. Good times! And unlike the female partners in many detective yarns, Enid doesn't exist just to be menaced by the villains. She is manhandled, abused and subjected to violence in the novel, but manages to escape on her own. In fact, she does at least as much to solve the mystery and obtain justice as her gumshoe dad does. The characters in the book are all colorful and neatly rendered, particularly Jack and Enid. Unfortunately, as is the case with many novels these days, this one could have benefitted by a final editing pass to eliminate some of its tendency toward repetition. For example, at the beginning of the book, a death scene is described in which a “baby's fist spasmodically beat[s] against the dead woman's face, splattering rips and reams of blood in every direction of the tiny kitchen.”Nearly three quarters of the way through the book, Jack finds the corpse described in the initial passage and picks up the infant, whose “tiny fists beat against him, splattering rips and reams of blood across his face as she wailed at full volume.”I like the phrasing, but that's a few too many rips and reams of blood being splattered for my comfort. These are minor points, however. Offsetting them is the fact that Lewis has laced her novel with really fine writing that shows her eye for the telling detail and a facility for original language. It would have been easy to sketch the plot in a series of clichés, using tired metaphors hundreds of other authors have used before. Instead, Lewis opted for originality and flare. For instance, only a couple of sentences into her novel she gives us:“Eyes full of empty stared upward as she lay sprawled out like some grotesque pin-up girl. An all-American beauty served up on cheap linoleum, a Jackson Pollock canvas of bullet holes and blood spatter.”“Eyes full of empty;” “A Jackson Pollock canvas of bullet holes and blood splatter;” Now that's writing. An author capable of turning two phrases like that in a single paragraph knows what she's doing. What's more, Lewis does it over and over again in spinning out her story. She's on top of things from the very beginning. I'm looking forward to her next novel already.Read a sample of Gunning for Angels now (also available on Audible):https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asin=B00I84NSE0&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_PW1M5AAVMJ81S3AEJ4X9&tag=podiat_ad2-20

Confessions of a Closet Romantic

'Tis the season for my much-loved, annual classic holiday movie marathon. For me, film is richer in B&W, and you can't beat classic holiday movies for stirring inspirational monologues and heartwarming affection, love and romance. The sleigh bells sound effect is courtesy of a Creative Commons license from freesound.org.MoviesChristmas in Connecticut has so many funny and charming moments. The Man Who Came to Dinner is stagey and delightfully over-the-top. Here's the Christmas Eve scene when Lorraine Sheldon discovers that she's been pranked and didn't actually get engaged to a lord. Here's the whole sequence leading up to That Phone Call in It's a Wonderful Life. The rotary phones! The 78 records! People looking dignified and dressing up! Plus the sweet authentic sentiment--this movie represents pure love to me, and I never tire of it, no matter how many times I see it.Another delightful Jimmy Stewart holiday classic is The Shop Around the Corner. I've talked about this movie a few times,  because the rom com You've Got Mail is based on this charming story (see my Intimate Worlds episode). In Bell, Book and Candle,  Jimmy falls under the spell of Kim Novak on Christmas Eve.  I mean, who wouldn't?The lesser known Frank Capra holiday classic, Meet John Doe, is now in the public domain--watch the full movie here.Frank Capra intended to direct It Happened on 5th Avenue but it didn't happen--it still ends up being the most charming and affectionate holiday film he never directed. When a tramp squats in a 5th Avenue mansion around Christmastime, he changes the post-war lives of many other people--including the billionaire who owns the mansion.Cary Grant plays the charismatic angel Dudley who comes to earth at Christmas to help a struggling bishop in The Bishop's Wife. Dudley realizes if he wants to help the bishop, he needs to show him how to cherish and value his wife. There are many beautiful moments and scenes in this film, including this one performed by The Mitchell Boychoir. Heavenly.Janet Leigh plays a young war widow with an adorable son who works as a secret shopper at Christmas in Holiday Affair. After she meets a handsome salesman (Robert Mitchum) in the toy department, her whole world is turned upside down and she starts to reconsider marrying her steady boyfriend. The hopeful post-war sentiment of White Christmas moves me, no matter how many times I've seen it. The lush romance, music, gorgeous costumes and wintery Technicolor sets turn this movie into a holiday fever dream.Remember the Night is about a beautiful shoplifter (Barbara Stanwyck) taken home to Indiana for Christmas by a handsome district attorney (Fred MacMurray) who feels bad that she'll sit in jail over the holiday. It has everything you want in a holiday movie: redemption, forgiveness, a close-knit family, found family, small-town charm and warm romance.

Zig At The Gig with Richard Lloyd of Television Best known for his work with the ground-breaking group Television, Richard Lloyd is a strikingly gifted guitarist who has created an impressive body of work both as a frontman and as a collaborator with other musicians. Capable of bold, angular patterns as well as elegant, languid melodic lines, Lloyd first found acclaim for his work on Television's first two albums, Marquee Moon (1977) and Adventure (1978). Lloyd's solo career took a while to take off as he struggled with personal demons, but with 1985's Field of Fire, a highly personal and explosive set, he reaffirmed his status as a major talent. Lloyd impressed audiences as a sideman in his work with John Doe (1990's Meet John Doe) and Matthew Sweet (1991's Girlfriend and 1993's Altered Beast), and he helped to revive the influential pre-punk band Rocket from the Tombs with a series of live shows as well as the 2003 album Rocket Redux. And in the 2000s and 2010s, Lloyd put a new emphasis on his solo career with albums such as The Cover Doesn't Matter (2000), The Jamie Neverts Story (2009), and Countdown (2018). read more here https://www.allmusic.com/artist/richard-lloyd-mn0000351053/biography Richard 's Info https://www.richardlloyd.com/ https://www.facebook.com /The-Official-Richard-Lloyd-Fan-Page-126158157415048/ https://twitter.com/richardlloyd206?lang=en http://www.everythingiscombustible.com/ Richard's book https://plowboyrecords.com/

This week we've got a big one for you: the five films that Frank Capra and Barbara Stanwyck made together. Starting with LADIES OF LEISURE (1930), we interpret the Stanwyck character as the Capra stand-in, which leads to some interesting results. MEET JOHN DOE (1941) becomes LADIES OF LEISURE inverted (Stanwyck as artist, Cooper as model—but Stanwyck as stand-in either way); while MIRACLE WOMAN (1931) also foreshadows MEET JOHN DOE, this time with Stanwyck as Jane Doe. FORBIDDEN (1932) and BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN (1933) lie outside of this set of obsessions. The first is Capra doing a weepie with screwball lovers, not a very comfortable fit, while the newspaper setting and political intrigue point to future developments. The second is an interracial romance in which Stanwyck is, for once, the secondary figure, and General Yen is the near-obligatory Capra suicide. While expressing our astonishment at GENERAL YEN's sophisticated critique of white supremacy, which is beyond the capacity of most Hollywood movies of the era, we forgot to issue a trigger warning for the racist doll in MIRACLE WOMAN. John Carson's hobbies are uncool in more ways than one. Her mom made way to Fay after a psychic reading saying Fay was in trouble with guy. Fay was not delighted to have mom back, but still started doing silent movies in her teens. We talk King Kong. Fay had to scream for eight hours straight on a sound stage. Fay has been called the first scream queen. She was so much more then the babe King Kong fell in love with. She did a lot of horror type films, but she did a lot of other straight rolls. Her first husband was a trip. She was so young and so patient. Robert came to Hollywood after being a successful Broadway producer. He was screenwriter of so many films, Illicit, The Miracle Woman,  Ann Carvers profession (it starred Fay but they never met) , Mr Deeds Comes To Town, Meet John Doe, Lost Horizon and so many more. He had a long partnership with Frank Capra. He dated Carole Lombard and Glenda Farrell. Fay left her husband after many horrible stunts he pulled. He was an alcoholic and drug addict. He kidnapped their daughter twice. After their divorce he hung himself. She got involved with Clifford Odets but he wanted no part of marriage to Fay. A matchmaking pal set up Fay with Robert and the rest was history. There is so much we got too. We could have gone on longer. So much we didn't get to. The book is fabulous. The Patrick Coffin Show | Interviews with influencers | Commentary about culture | Tools for transformation

It’s that time of year again when we review the notable “holiday” movies for their adherence to the real meaning of Christmas, production quality, and merits and demerits. Who better than the founder of Decent Films, Steven Greydanus? Steve is not only the father of seven and a permanent deacon with the Archdiocese of Newark, he is a prolific movie critic and newly minted member of the elite New York Film Critics’ Circle. Ever since the first A Christmas Carol silent film came out in 1901 (!), Christmas and movies have gone together like Bob Cracthit and Tiny Tim. Since then, there have been over 30 adaptations of the Dickens original to the big or small screen. In this episode, here is a sample of the Christmas themed movies Steven and I talk about in this episode:   Elf, starring Will Farrell, produced by my friend Todd Komarnicki, who appeared in Episode 25  of the show Die Hard  starring Bruce Willis. Is it really a Christmas movie? Discuss. And we do! A Midnight Clear C starring Gary Sinese. Biblical allusion galore in this tragically little known war movie set at Christmas. Joyeux Noel, a multi-country co-production about the true story of a Christmas Eve impromptu cease-fire between the Germans and the Allies. It’s a Wonderful Life,  starring James Stewart. For my money the greatest film ever made. If you disagree, we can’t be friends. Want the story behind the story? Read this. It’s what got the attention of my upcoming guest Mary Owen, daughter of actress Donna Reed, the incandescent Mary Bailey, wife of George. Meet John Doe  starring Gary Cooper. The other Frank Capra movie about a good man tempted to suicide on Christmas Eve. Bizarrely forgotten classic, as I point out here. We also talked about the bad ones, like Ron Howard’s super-lousy How the Grinch Stole Christmas and a few other rancid things disguised as movies. Since this is a respectable joint—I ain’t linking to ‘em.

The Professional Left Podcast with Driftglass and Blue Gal

Driftglass and Blue Gal talk about music; can a song be too old to be cool? In our main event, can Driftglass trust a Chicago Democratic politician who changed her position, and now says Cook County is too broke to allow for a tax cut?Faith and trust in politicians is often an anathma to good government. The Tea Party has more faith in Sarah Palin than in their own eyesight. But what if you can't judge whether someone is lying or not? Finally, DG/BG remind themselves that The Tea Party Movement is actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of FOX news, and was predicted by Frank Capra's "Meet John Doe." Plus, it's time to slam David Brooks again. You'll love it, unless you're David Brooks.Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/proleftpodcast)
