Trump's disregard for Europe confirmed in phone call with Putin over Ukraine

In the press

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2025 6:41

PRESS REVIEW – Friday, February 14: Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's phone conversation continues to spark concern, panic and worry among European leaders. What does this mean for the future of Europe? Also, The New York Times takes us inside the family succession drama that has torn apart Rupert Murdoch's family. Plus: for the non-romantics this Valentine's Day, name rats after your exes and watch them being devoured by owls! There is alarm, panic and great concern in the European press this Friday after Wednesday's call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in which the pair appeared to discuss plans for an end to the war in Ukraine. The British daily The i says the call has left European leaders scrambling, but notes that NATO's leader Mark Rutte has commended Trump's honesty and said that Europe needs a wake-up call about its defence spending. "Castaways" is how Libération, French left-wing paper, describes the two leaders on its front page. The paper's editor calls the conversation with Trump the greatest victory for Putin in three years of war, and it didn't even come on the battlefield. There is great concern that talks to end the war in Ukraine will come at Ukraine's expense and will completely sideline Kyiv. In Ransom's cartoon in French paper Le Parisien, Trump tells Volodymyr Zelensky that there is no chair for him at the proverbial negotiating table with Putin. The Frankfurter Allgemeine, the German daily, wonders if Berlin is simply watching all this unravel from the sidelines. The paper notes that Putin and Trump's conversation and subsequent comments this week have not only shaken Germany's understanding of its own role in the conflict. They also come in the middle of an election campaign in the country and beg the question: how can Europe take responsibility for Ukraine's security and its own? Writing in the Daily Mail, Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO, says that Trump has handed Ukraine on a platter to Russia and says it's worse than Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Nazi Germany. He also acknowledges that this agreement is catastrophic for the courageous Ukrainians who've been fighting for three years. Politico quotes a European official as saying that European leaders simply lack a master plan when it comes to Trump's new world disorder. The official, speaking anonymously, tells Politico that Trump discussing peace talks without even involving Europe shows to what extent Washington disregards the continent. The US president has delivered a rude awakening to the cruel world of today. The New York Times takes us inside the messy court battle and bitter succession fight between Rupert Murdoch and his four children over the future of his empire. Based on 3,000 pages of court documents, the Times article details a family succession saga that reads like a script from the TV series "Succession" (itself inspired by the Murdoch family). Ninety-three-year-old Murdoch has always intended for his empire to be passed on to his four children. In recent times, however, he has sought to consolidate power in the hands of just one child: Lachlan Murdoch, the most politically conservative of the four siblings and who represents the conservative direction Murdoch wants for the future of his news empire. In 2023, he sat down with his two daughters to announce that he'd be changing the trust to give Lachlan majority powers. What ensued was a bitter family legal battle that's played out in dramatic fashion, culminating in a secret trial in which they testified to the power plays, backstabbing and grievances that have defined the family. Finally, it's Valentine's Day and if you're a non-romantic, there are many ways to hate-celebrate this day! The Independent reports that animal shelters and zoos around the world are offering many possibilities to help you forget about your exes. At a bird shelter in Alaska, you can pay $100 to name a frozen dead rat after your ex and then watch it being fed to resident owls at the shelter. If rats aren't your thing, you can always name a feral cat after an ex before it – the cat, not your ex – gets castrated! Meanwhile, Memphis Zoo in Tennessee gives you two options: for $10, you can send a lovely video of a red panda eating a grape to your loved one … or, you can send a video of an elephant pooping. The options are plentiful this Valentine's Day for lovers and haters! You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

How 'Panda Diplomacy' Led To Conservation Success

In 1972, pandas arrived at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC, to huge fanfare. Since then, pandas have been some of the city's most beloved residents. But for the first time in more than 50 years, DC is panda-free—indefinitely. Mama panda Mei Xiang, papa bear Tian Tian, and their youngest cub Xiao Qi Ji returned to China in November when their leases ended. This is possible because all but a few pandas residing outside of China are on loan through agreements with the country. It's not just the National Zoo waving its pandas goodbye—the Memphis Zoo's single panda returned to China in April, and Zoo Atlanta's pandas will go later in 2024. The news of the pandas' departure seemed sudden, and it stirred up some questions: Why are the pandas leaving? And why now?The news resurfaced the idea of panda diplomacy—how China introduced pandas to the world by loaning them out to other countries and using them as a symbol of cooperation.SciFri producer Rasha Aridi and freelance journalist Aja Drain look back at 80 years of panda conservation, and how panda diplomacy paved the way for groundbreaking science. And they try to answer the multi-million dollar question: Was it all worth it?This story was produced by Rasha Aridi, with help from Aja Drain. Edited by John Dankosky, with help from D. Peterschmidt and Emma Gometz. All our music and sound design is by D. Peterschmidt.Special thanks to the experts we spoke with: Dr. Chee Meng Tan, Dr. Pierre Comizzoli, Dr. Mel Songer, Michael Brown-Palsgrove, Dr. Rich Bergl, Dr. Jack Liu, Dr. Binbin Li, as well as Dr. E. Elena Songster, environmental historian at Saint Mary's College of California, and Dr. Carolyn Lin, professor of communication at the University of Connecticut.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Giant panda Ya Ya returned to its home in Beijing Zoo early on Monday after spending 20 years in the United States. On April 27, giant panda Ya Ya arrived in Shanghai from the Memphis Zoo of Tennessee. The panda was then quarantined before moving to Beijing. The Beijing Zoo has prepared a special feeding place for giant panda Ya Ya as well as tailor-made feeding measures, care, medical support and nutrition plans, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. As Ya Ya is old and needs rest and adapt to a new environment, she will not be on public display for the time being. The zoo will periodically release updates on Ya Ya through its official Weibo account, according to the administration.Born at the Beijing Zoo, Ya Ya was taken to the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee in 2003 for a joint research and conservation project, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. In 2006, Ya Ya began to shed her fur, a condition that worsened in 2014. Experts at the Memphis Zoo and in China tried various treatments but were unable to solve the problem, the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens said.

The giant panda Hua Hua attracted 264,000 visitors to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which was the second most popular tourist destination in China during the May Day holidays, according to local media reports. The "giant panda economy" has become a bright spot in the country's consumption, with numerous cultural and creative shops in Chengdu and across the country filled with a wide variety of panda-related products. He Hua (nicknamed Hua Hua) will soon be three years old and has captivated the hearts of Chinese people thanks to her mild temperament and her rare inability to climb trees. She is also different from other giant pandas because of her white fur, rather than the more common beige color, and her chubbiness, making her highly recognizable. He Hua's family background further boosts her appeal, as her mother is Chenggong, known for her obsession with cleanliness, and her father is Meilan, who was born in the US.Many young people travel to Southwest China's Sichuan province just to see the giant pandas. Celebrity giant panda Hua Hua boosted ticket sales at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, with all 180,000 tickets selling out for the first three days of this year's May Day holidays. There were so many visitors that the park had to set Hua Hua's viewing time limit to only three minutes."We made this special trip to come here to see Hua Hua," said a tourist. "We plan to stay at the base all day just to see the giant pandas and we plan to continue coming here even tomorrow," he added. On the social media platform Xiaohongshu, a netizen posted a photo of Hua Hua eating an apple and wrote "Hua Hua and her favorite little apple," which quickly garnered more than 2,500 likes.China is in the grip of giant panda fever following a spate of stories about the bears both at home and in overseas zoos, which has sparked a shopping spree for products related to the animal. The sales have prompted the media to dub it the "giant panda economy."The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding rushed to register several trademarks after He Hua became a national darling and a key search word on e-commerce websites. The trademarks are related to fields including clothing, shoes, hats, feed seeds, education and entertainment. The last giant panda to cause a rush was the mascot for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Bing Dwen Dwen, which was created based on the image of a giant panda. More than 1.4 million toy mascots were sold during the Games, according to media reports.Earlier this year, it emerged that Ya Ya's health was failing, sparking national concern in China and demands for her early return. Ya Ya, a giant panda born at Beijing Zoo, was leased to Memphis Zoo in 2003. At the end of last year, it was announced that she would be returned to China at the end of the 20-year lease. In addition to Ya Ya, several other giant pandas living overseas have been returned to China this year, including Xiang Xiang, who returned to China in February from the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo in Japan.Along with Hua Hua, Ya Ya and Xiang Xiang, Meng Lan is also one of the most popular giant pandas across the country. On the first day of the May Day holidays, thousands of people lined up outside the giant panda house at Beijing Zoo, waiting half an hour to get in just to see Meng Lan for five minutes.Behind the "giant panda craze" is the continuous growth of the population of this species amid China's green development. At present, the wild population of giant pandas in China has increased from 1,114 in the 1970s to 1,864. With the advancement of the construction of the Giant Panda National Park, the connectivity and integrity of the giant panda habitat are being improved.

An era is coming to an end.  Richard Nixon started up the first relationship between the United States… and Communist China.  Back then… a backward 3rd world country… where running water was a luxury. As a gesture of friendship… the Chinese government loaned us a pair of zoo animals never before seen in the United States.  A pair of Giant Pandas.  At the National Zoo in Washington… Ling Ling and Sing Sing became a sensation.   Chewing on imported bamboo…  and generally being cute. The entire country followed their numerous attempts to reproduce and create an American Panda   W  For 10 years… the Pandas couldn't quite get it done…. til a baby was born… and died hours later… cradled in Ling Ling's Arms.  By the way…  this is where you got the entire storyline for the movie Anchorman.  The pandas in labor!— Alas… Panda diplomacy is dying.  Over the years... China made a habit of befriending countries… and loaning them Giant Pandas… but now they want ‘em back.  In China there's an angry groundswell …demanding the country get the Pandas back from the Memphis Zoo.  Complaining they're mistreated… and their bamboo isn't fresh.  Animal rights groups are joining in… and it looks like the era of Panda diplomacy might be coming to an end.  No more ling ling's and sing sing to marvel at. And that's a shame shame.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Ya Ya paces in her enclosure — another detail that alarmed people on social media — she is likely exhibiting the hormonal influence of estrus, which female pandas undergo once a year, Ms. Winchester said. “It is heartbreaking to have an entire narrative out there,” Ms. Winchester said when asked about the criticism. “First of all it is hard to control.
