This week I talk to Mike Fiorito, author of several books, including The Hated Ones, Falling from Trees, Sleeping with Fishes, Call Me Guido, Freud's Haberdashery Habits and Hallucinating Huxley. Falling from Trees received the 2022 Independent Press Distinguished Book Award in the short story category. Mike's latest book, Mescalito Riding His White Horse, is inspired by the music of bluegrass legend Peter Rowan. He has a novel in production, slated to come out in 2024, called For All We Know, which examines the phenomena and the liminality that always seems to be associated with it. I saw Mike's book, Mescalito Riding His White Horse, pop up on my Instagram feed, and the name and cover caught my eye. I didn't know anything about Mike, or Peter Rowan, for that matter, but I kept feeling drawn to reach out. I know better, at this point, than to ignore those little sparks of connection. When I did reach out I discovered that we inhabit unexpected overlapping landscapes, including Tibetan Buddhism, wisdom traditions, ufology, profound dreams and visions, and a fascination with the phenomena. Mike sent me a copy of Mescalito, and when I began reading, I was astonished at the flurry of synchronicities with my own writing that emerged in the very first paragraph. Those of you who have listened to or read my book will catch it right away, I'm sure. Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods Today's insight was inspired by American actor and singer songwriter Ryan Bingham, and a selection from his Mescalito album with lyrics from his song “Sunrise”. In a special Way Of The Renaissance Man performance, Jim plays and sings the quoted lyrics in today's Wednesday Wisdom feature. And now, here's the Renaissance Man himself... Well I'm living in the desert with a one eyed dog Well You could lead a blind man out of Vietnam Cause everybody's begging, everybody wants a chance Stuck in a storm, well do a rain dance — Ryan Bingham, “Sunrise” The Americana music star's folksy lyrics remind us of a very profound lesson in life; namely, that when things get really tough, the best response is to embrace the challenge and meet it head on. A more common way of stating this principle is, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” But I just think, “Stuck in a storm, well do a rain dance,” is a lot more poetic. The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge was published by the University of California Press in 1968 as a work of anthropology, though it is now widely considered a work for fiction. It was written by Carlos Castaneda and submitted as his Master's thesis in the school of Anthropology. It purports to document the events that took place during an apprenticeship with a self-proclaimed Yaqui Indian Sorcerer, don Juan Matus from Sonora, Mexico between 1960 and 1965. The book is divided into two sections. The first section, The Teachings, is a first-person narrative that documents Castaneda's initial interactions with don Juan. He speaks of his encounters with Mescalito (a teaching spirit inhabiting all peyote plants), divination with lizards and flying using the "yerba del diablo" (lit. "Devil's Weed"; Jimson weed), and turning into a blackbird using "humito" (lit. "little smoke"; a smoked powder containing Psilocybe mexicana). The second, A Structural Analysis, is an attempt, Castaneda says, at "disclos[ing] the internal cohesion and the cogency of don Juan's Teachings."
Escuchar audio

In early July, Brandon Adams and Roger Putnam set a new speed record for climbing Mescalito, the classic El Cap aid route. In fact, they smashed the previous mark (which had stood for more than two decades) by nearly 10 hours. But to hear them tell it, the day was all about laughs and tunes. In Episode 31 of the Cutting Edge, AAJ correspondent and YOSAR team member Lauren DeLaunay gets their thoughts on the joys of speed climbing, modern aid gear, risk, and a stellar partnership. The Cutting Edge is presented by Hilleberg the Tentmaker (hilleberg.com). This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.

Just us 3 with our friend from Boyle Heights, Mescalito from East of the River. He plays a few tracks for us from his new album "Peyote Cactus" and sits in while we tell stories about everything that's happened in the last few weeks. Enjoy!
Hey there good people. Is your back sore from patting yourself to hard? Self flagellating under the golden statuette of the Emmy’s? Maybe your mind is sore from the pummeling of Canelo and GGG? Or perhaps it’s on fire due to the nature of a toadstool penis and rape apologists for the Senate seat? If you’re suffering from any of these symptoms please don’t fret, we’re here to act as guide out of Mescalito's layer and into the bright light of clarity. On this episode we’re plunging into the madness that is the police, the plasticity of the Emmy’s (hey, they’re trying), the brutality of boxing, and the insecurity that is, and surrounds, our big wet President. Like and share, subscribe, leave a comment for your guides.

Listen to our interview with them and also Paul Rodriguez calls in to talk about his new play that covers the difficulty of pitching (and getting) a Latino show on TV... One of the scenes busiest artist makes time to sit with us, this evening...Mescalito! This interview has it all, beer, guns, Jared from Subway and much more. Mescalito is killing mic after mic and is building his reputation as he goes. A strong mind, solid morals and an understanding of what handwork brings, he is the representation of the current state of HipHop and it looks mighty bright. With a call in from our past guest Roqy Tyraid, this episode is one of my favorites! Oh, Jay-Z and Obama stop by too...true story.
