Welcome back, dear listeners, before we get into today's episode, I wanted to invite you to a live online workshop that I'm hosting called Journaling for Chronic Pain Relief. Journaling was a hugely important tool in my recovery, and I'm going to teach you how to release emotions, tension and pain from your body through writing in a way that's gentle and safe and won't overwhelm your nervous system. I hope that you'll join me, I would love to see and meet you there. The workshop will take place online on Thursday May 2nd at 12pm Eastern (and yes, there will be a replay, but it's only available to you if you register. And you can do that by going to: www.annaholtzman.com/WritingWorkshop   And now, I'm bringing you an epic episode today. I got to have a brain-tingling conversation with Michael Galinsky. Michael describes himself as an artist based in North Carolina who works as a father, dog walker, filmmaker, photographer, writer, musician and human.   He's also a co-creator of the 2016 film All The Rage: Saved by Sarno, which documents the work of Doctor John Sarno, a pioneer of mind-body medicine working both within and against the tide of the mainstream western medical system. The film also documents Michael's experience of recovering from chronic pain as Sarno's patient.   In our conversation, Michael and I talked about everything from his personal recovery story to the process of making the film to the sociology of chronic pain and how it maps onto historical and political movements. We talked about intergenerational healing and activism. Basically, our conversation bubbled into so many different areas, because the mind-body experience is not at all limited to our physical sensations. If you choose to enter the journey with us — which I hope you do — then buckle up and come along. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/from-chronic-pain-to-pass/support

Today we explore TMS and the mind/body connection that may just be at the root of your chronic pain or frustrating conditions. Studies and medical discoveries show that certain personality types are prone to suppressed emotions causing conditions such as: TMJ, Sciatica, Plantar fasciitis, Frozen shoulder, Rotator cuff injuries, Hip pain, Knee pain, Shin splints, Tennis elbow, Golfer's elbow, Tinnitus, Chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, Irritable bowel syndrome, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Migraines and tension headaches, Back pain, Neck pain, Shoulder pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Tennis elbow, Neuropathy, Vertigo and more.  In today's episode we discuss revolutionary concepts from books like The Body Keeps and Score and a series of books inspired by the research and healing treatment of Dr. John Sarno.    Referenced in this episode:  "The Mindbody Prescription”: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain" by John E. Sarno "The Body Keeps the Score Workbook”: Mind, Body, and Spirit Exercises for Trauma Survivors" by Bessel van der Kolk The Top 10 Health Discoveries of Dr. John Sarno” by Steve Ozanich  “All the Rage: Saved by Sarno" directed by Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley (documentary)   Bret's Mantras: My body is strong and capable of healing itself. I trust in my body's ability and I am no longer afraid of physical activities that I once enjoyed.  I am committed to exploring my suppressed emotions, repressed anger and releasing any tension that is causing my condition.  I do not need to fear painful thoughts or emotions  There is nothing structurally wrong with me .  I am grateful for my body and the ability to feel sensations, even if they are uncomfortable at times. It's normal and harmless to sometimes experience physical discomfort or pain but I will remember that sensation is a reminder to notice my emotions.  I release any fear or anxiety around my condition and replace it with trust and confidence in my body's healing abilities. I will no longer give my condition my energy or my focus.  My condition is not dangerous, so I will resume physical activities that I have been fearfully avoiding.   My physical body is miraculous and capable of overcoming anything.      Download the Patreon App and Join The Chalene Show at patreon.com/TheChaleneShow       Thank You To Our Show Sponsor Go to getsoul.com/Chalene  Check out The Sleepi Gummies and 15% off will be automatically taken at checkout       Thank you to our Sponsor!!! It's me, Dr. Ben this time. I'm struggling with some TMS symptoms.Dr. Susanna shared her journey and insight with it nearly a year ago back in Episode #267. And for those totally new to the concept or idea of TMS, my conversation during Episode #76 with Michael Galinsky, the filmmaker of All The Rage: Saved by Sarno, is a great place to start. Or you can watch that awesome documentary film! So, my right knee flared up on a short run. It's so easy (and tempting!) to just blame it on the run - a tendonitis strain or something. While that may have happened, it doesn't in and of itself explain the nagging and persistent pain. The fact of the matter is that TMS - tension myositis syndrome - is at the root of virtually ALL chronic conditions... seriously! So, how do we deal with it? Well it's a very personal process, but I'll share my perspective here in this episode.PS - I also share a bit in my new Substack you can find at benjaminalter.substack.com - I wrote an article called TMS - Tension Myositis Syndrome (or Too Much Suppression)Some highlights from today's episode...Why emotional pain is so difficult to feel and how culture makes it easier and more acceptable for pain to manifest physicallyThe mechanics of TMS - i.e. the way that psychological stress manifests physiologically in muscles, and all cells of the bodyMy view of the "TMS Community" and how I try to avoid the dogmaWhy it makes sense to nurture the physical even though root causes are mental/emotionalTips and tools for navigating pain while taking total responsibility for self-healingLinks to some more good stuff- Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: https://www.alter.health/meal-guides- Cleanse with Us during the next Alter Health Cleanse: https://www.alter.health/cleanse- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: https://www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants- ATTN Health Practitioners! For anyone that follows me on Twitter, they might have seen a thread a number of weeks ago where I spoke about back pain. Late last year, I woke with pain in my left hand side of my back, and contributed it to being a Dad, lifting little people, being out of shape, sitting down for larger periods of time etc. I went to my physio and had several sessions before Christmas and to little or no state change. Christmas was sore. I was more grumpy than usual and entered January and had a private MRI scan. That in itself was an interesting experience, and one for another episode, but my GP called me and said “one of your discs is protruding” and possibly on a nerve. I was shocked. I'd heard about herniated discs but now I had one! I actually got stiffer after for a few weeks. Was this what my life was going to be like? Is this what middle age feels like? Sheesh - if it is, then this isn't much fun. Then I Tweeted. What came back was a lot of support and advice. Emma Blomkamp, read something in a newsletter by Kai Brach several months prior and tagged Kai, and Kai mentioned a doctor called Dr John Sarno in the States. He encouraged me to Google and watch some stuff. Sarno's work states that many people have herniated discs but what is the cause for lots of back pain is stress and hidden life traumas. I was instantly skeptical. But I spent 2 hours that night watching lectures of Sarno's in NYU on YouTube. I was shocked. Last year was brutal. Running a business and balancing everything has been hard on me and hard on my own mental health. Maybe, just maybe there was something in this. Then Michael tweeted to me. He's created an awesome documentary called All the Rage several years ago and I bought it on iTunes and watched it. It explores the relationship between the mind and the body. Sarno encourages people to try exercise and ‘watch' for the stressors. I did exactly this. I cut the grass. I went for a short walk with the kids. I gave them a piggy back and to my surprise, nothing.  Was this in my head? In this episode, I speak with Michael about working directly with Dr Sarno in the creation of the documentary and explore deeper about the background to Michaels own journey - something that under pinned the narrative of the documentary. This is a brilliant episode and one for all - even if you don't suffer back pain. You will find this fascinating. Today I am joined by Rose and Tovah, two mind body practitioners who have linked up in the last year or two to provide collaborative treatment for mind body issues and also created a podcast called the TMS Roundtable. We talk about how the two of them — Tovah, a chiropractor, and Rose and ISTDP (Intensive Short Term Dynamic Therapy) psychoanalyst — came to meet through their mutual connection, All the Rage director, Michael Galinsky. We discussed how who each practitioner is informs how we work in the mind body field and how the two of them work together with their very different styles. The three of us all marveled at how short term work is providing such relief for so many people out there and that the body informs us so much about what we feel inside that we can make a huge leap forward, very quickly. I very much enjoy talking with Rose and Tovah and putting our heads together on how to organize the healing process and to trust the body to tell us what we need to know. I found tons of common ground with these talented women, including our awareness that unleashing our personal narratives and power is so important.

Michael Galinsky is a documentary film maker, not a standard guest on the podcast! However, as he states, he is not your standard film maker! In this episode we talk all about the work of Dr. John Sarno, documented beautifully in Michaels phenomenal documentary, All The Rage. Watch the documentary at https://www.alltheragedoc.com Some of my favorite highlights include... * (at least) 80% of healing comes from within * Pain starts in the mind and manifests in the body * Journaling is a great way to access subconscious material * Pain is a physical AND emotional response to tissue damage or the threat of tissue damage  * Symptoms are a barometer to our state of mind Links to learn more - Show notes and resources: https://alter.health/episode74/ - Join the Alter Health Weekly Group Coaching: https://www.alter.health/weekly-group-coaching - Get a copy of Dr. Benjamin's book: https://amzn.to/2tmiOz3 - Apply to work with Dr. Benjamin: https://alter.health/membership - Connect on Facebook: https://fb.me/alterhealthinc - Follow Dr. Benjamin on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbenjaminalter

Watch video or download podcast belowMichael Galinsky - a prolific documentary film producer is struck with chronic pain. What does he do? He and his wife Suki grab their video camera of course and begins to film his withering body on the floor of his office. This real life experience turns into a film about getting rid of his pain with the help of a "mindbody" doctor. Michael and Suki dive into creating this groundbreaking film and realizes how our society deals - and doesn't deal with the growing influence of money and pain. This film opens with Larry David (creator of Seinfeld) and Howard Stern (shock jock) dive into their own misery from pain. You must listen to this discussion about the film "All the Rage" - and Dr. Sarno. Michael & Suki together, create a true multi-award winning masterpiece that just might change the way we all deal with our own pain and health. Michael Galinsky is a filmmaker from Chapel Hill, North Carolina - he started making films in the late 80s.  Galinsky is most known by the TMS/Sarno crowd for his co-creating of "All the Rage," a film that follows Michael through his chronic pain all the way to his full healing (link below).  I sit down with Galinsky as we discuss some of his projects, his encounters with Dr. Sarno, his take on TMS and why he doesn't call it TMS, among other things. Eric Zimmer is an inspiration to me.  Listening to his podcast is like free therapy that I didn't even know I needed...so for sure "best of" material.  This conversation goes to the darker places of life, but manages to walk back up the stairs into more light-hearted chat as well.  You might need some tissues, but  you will be laughing along the way. Eric Zimmer has built companies for 15 years, and work in technology longer.  He led major software programs for Fortune 20 companies and he started his own Solar Energy company.   The most cool project Eric is rocking now is The One You Feed podcast, named "Best of iTunes" in 2014. Eric Zimmer On Vroom/Veering Eric pointed out that increasing the frequency of moving from Vroom to Veer...like daily is a worthy goal. In Eric Zimmer's experience, that longer the Vroom Vroom period, the more dramatic the VEER can become. Eric was too numb and was seeking highs from drugs and drinking. Downward spiral of getting high, and feeling bad...trying to get sober. He was dying and headed for jail. One day he was arrested, lost his job, and his van and he didn't have anywhere else to go. So he checked in to re-hab... The treatment center suggested that he should do the 28-day treatment program...1st he said no... Later he changed his mind because he had a moment of clarity and knew he would die if he went back out into the world. The problem was his strategy of dealing with life. Depression and Feeling bad Eric was thinkin "I don't like the way I feel, I want to feel different" and using drugs to feel different. Realizing that having a mood or feeling bad is ok and it's not an emergency. When in reactive, addicted mode, there is a feeling of panic when one feels bad..one feels compelled to take some action, be that a cigarette, sex, tv, food, drugs, beer what have you. Eric learned that emotions are not emergencies. If we are not so afraid of emotions we can just let them be.
