Endurance horse riding is one of the oldest sports in America and here in Moab we have biannual endurance races and rides. "The Moab Endurance Rides," take horse and rider (or runner/walker!) into deep canyons with dramatic sandstone walls towering overhead and across mesa tops with incredible views of the wind sculpted high desert landscape. The Moab Canyons ride/race is each fall, wending about in the Tombstone Rock area, northeast of Moab—the Canyon Rims ride centers on Hatch Mesa. Today's guest is the organizer/ride manager of these events, Mickey Smith. Mickey tells us about the origin of the sport and why it's a great sport to partake in if you love riding and love our desert landscape, as she does. And the best part about endurance rides? Plus this week photographer Mickey Smith takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Mickey Smith is an American conceptual artist who now lives in New Zealand who holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Photography from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a Diploma in Jewellery Design from Hungry Creek Art & Craft School in New Zealand. As a photographer, her practice over the last twenty years has been engaged with a longstanding inquiry into libraries, books and archives — in particular the social significance of their physical existence or disappearance. Smith has exhibited throughout the United States, in China, Russia and New Zealand and her works are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art Library, Sheldon Museum of Art and Weisman Art Museum. She has also received awards from the McKnight Foundation, CEC ArtsLink, Americans for the Arts and Creative New Zealand. Her first artist's book, Denudation, was included in the photo book installation, A Different Kind of Order: The ICP Triennial in 2012. In 2018, her second book was published titled As You Will... Carnegie Libraries of the South Pacific, a book focused on the 25 Carnegie libraries erected in New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji. In 1884, a peculiar series of murder trials took place in Cambria County. Two men, both of whom were named Mickey, were convicted of murder in the same week. Both men not only shared the same first name, but also the same handicap-- they both had wooden legs. But what makes this bit of historical trivia even more interesting is that both judges in these respective murder trials, Judge Dean and Judge Johnston, were also peg-legged. The court clerk who made out the juror's orders also had a wooden leg, as did the county treasurer who cashed the orders. One of the witnesses was peg-legged, while one of the jurors had not one, but two wooden legs. In total, there were nine artificial limbs in the Cambia County Courthouse during a single week in March of 1884. But it is one of these two convicted murderers, Mickey Smith, who went on to achieve infamy after pulling off a daring escape from the Cambria County Jail in Ebensburg. This escape led to a massive manhunt and a spate of Mickey Smith sightings all across the state for years to come. And, strangely, no one knows for sure what became of the peg-legged escape artist. He was never caught.
