“Healthy boundaries are important, but you may be building a brick wall when a picket fence would do.” – Amy DickinsonBoundaries are all the rage in wellness speak. What exactly are they? What does it mean to ‘set boundaries'? Ummm, we're African - how on earth do we set boundaries as black folks within a society that completely disregards personal space and autonomy? Personal boundaries can be defined as “the limits and rules we set for ourselves within relationships. A person with healthy boundaries can say “no” to others when they want to, but they are also comfortable opening themselves up to intimacy and close relationships.” | Therapist Aid, UHS BerkleyWe delve into all of this and more. How we are personally trying to set boundaries and the struggle that comes with it. We also talk about healthy boundaries and how we can allow those we trust and who honour us within our personal space.Help us out and let us know some of the ways you practise healthy boundaries. Lesley Michaels was born to feminism. Her foundational ethos was shaped by her audacious paternal grandmother who was a 1st wave feminist and savvy businesswoman. She came of age just as 2nd wave feminism was becoming a significant American social movement. At age 16 she struck out on her own for NYC and the heart of the cultural transformation that was the zeitgeist of the late 1960's and early 1970's. She was later one of the first women to break through the glass ceiling in the “old boy” industry of oil and gas. Shortly after leaving the corporate world, she was infected by a latent entrepreneurial spirit. Over the following years Lesley developed and sold several small businesses. In each case her staff was a multicultural representation of women. During this same period, she became a leader in the coaching industry. Lesley has mentored Fortune 500 C-Suite executives, individuals within the financially privileged sector, and celebrities. Lesley's body of unique life experiences have provided her with a first-hand understanding of the daily struggles faced by women of every race, culture, and sexual orientation. On the Shoulders of Mighty Women is a tribute to the power and grace of those who came before and the ones who will follow, the warriors and the fallen. This book is one more way Lesley chooses to amplify the voice, energy, experience-based understandings and compassion of women fighting for equality, diversity, equity and inclusion. Lesley facilitates virtual programs on topics ranging from Be a Giraffe in a Field of Zebras to Developing Women's Strategic Alliance. Lesley also hosts the weekly podcast; Women We Should Know, and will be delivering her TED talk early winter of 2023, Lift One With You, As You Rise. HERE ARE 3 TIPS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR ROAD TO SELF-EMPOWERMENT Realizing that things don't always go to plan, make good use of those occasions. Always start with what went right, followed by when did you get off track and finally, what course correction can you make now? Full mind breaks. 3 times a day, walk away from your desk/office for 10 minutes. Either close your eyes and focus on your breathing to clear your mind, or walk outside, away from anyone who would want to pull you into a work related conversation. Calling all the way back to early training, women are taught to chase perfection. If you're not making mistakes, then you're not expressing any of your innate genius or creativity. Giving ourselves permission to make mistakes helps us still the critical mind. Lesley Michaels This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Lesley Michaels. The two talk about the leadership path that she started at only twelve years old, and how Lesley has created a safe space for other women, and helped to change the narrative on women helping women forward. In this episode, we discuss: What started Lesley at only twelve years old on a path that would make her a leader in the feminist movement Who are the profound influences that she says impacted her life the most What Lesley has learned and how she takes that forward for the betterment of women How Lesley has created a safe space for other women, and helped to change the narrative on women helping women forward What she learned from the business that crashed and burned Questions to ask in moments of mistakes to find nuggets of wisdom What surprises Lesley has found in writing her new book and starting her new company Why women are desperate for change, and how to navigate the next steps The definition of professional equity, and why it matters to you Tips on staying present, learning, and honoring the people who helped us get to where we are Lesley Michaels was born to feminism. Her foundational ethos was shaped by her audacious paternal grandmother, a 1st wave feminist and savvy businesswoman. At age 12, she dreamed one night of creating a platform for bringing women together in alliance. The following morning, making notes about that dream started her on a path that would inform Lesley's entire life. She came of age just as 2nd wave feminism became a significant American social movement. At age 16, she struck out on her own for NYC and the heart of the cultural transformation that was the zeitgeist of the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was later one of the first women to break through the glass ceiling in the “old boy” industry of oil and gas. The ruthless competitiveness of the women she encountered in the corporate world was shocking and emotionally fracturing. The foreignness of their approach to other women after spending years among committed feminists convinced Lesley to abandon the corporate world. Shortly after, she was infected by a latent entrepreneurial spirit. Over the following years, Lesley developed and sold several small businesses. Ownership gave her the refreshing freedom to choose how the company would be shaped. In each case, her staff was a multicultural representation of women. During this same period, she became a leader in the coaching industry. Lesley has mentored Fortune 500 C-Suite executives, individuals within the financially privileged sector, and celebrities. A lifelong dedicated student of human behavior, Lesley observed that the level of distress still experienced by women in corporate hemispheres is causing many to walk away. They are losing their dream, and both industry and the world are losing leaders of tremendous merit. Developing practical solutions to pull back the veil of this dirty little secret ignited Lesley's commitment to https://lesleymichaels.com/meet-lesley/books/ On the Shoulders of Mighty Women. Throughout the years that followed her time in New York, Lesley was a dedicated voice for bringing attention to the challenges, dehumanization, and legalized inequities delivered upon members of marginalized communities. Consequently, the additional burden created by Intersectional Feminism, as coined by Kimberle' Crenshaw, was immediately apparent to her. Lesley's body of unique life experiences has provided her with a first-hand understanding of the daily struggles faced by women of every race, culture, and sexual orientation. On the Shoulders of Mighty Women is a tribute to the power and grace of those who came before and the ones who will follow, the warriors and the fallen. This book is one more way Lesley found to amplify the voice, energy, experience-based understandings, and compassion of women fighting for equality, diversity, equity and inclusion. Lesley currently lives in Taos, NM, where she facilitates virtual programs on topics ranging from Discovering Personal Freedom Through Self-Trust to Building Strategic Alliances of Women. We are excited to invite you to tun into the first Crossover Podcast Event between Janine Hamner-Holman of The Cost of Not Paying Attention Podcast and Lesley Michaels of Women We Should Know Podcast. As friends, colleagues and frequent collaborators Lesley and Janine come together to discuss some of the issues they see holding women back and the ways they are passionate about contributing to new paths for resolution. Tune in to their exploration of how the time has come for women to consider forming strategic alliances for their collective benefit and upliftment. This has the potential to create a power stage that can dispel the false idea that there is not enough space. Janine and Lesley dive into the ways in which many professional roles and entire industries are being forced to shift from a former transactional approach, which is naturally male, to become more relational, which is inherent to women. With women's naturally higher empathy quotient these pivots and reinventions within the business world makes them a natural fit for newly forming roles. From how and where to give new focus of attention to ways to develop alliances that serve, this is an episode overflowing with insight, straight talk and lots of laughter.   Janine Hamner Holman is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and expert on conscious leadership, DE&I, organizational development, neurobiology, and what it takes to attract and retain world-class talent.  As CEO of the J&J Consulting Group, she brings more than 30 years' experience to her work with purpose driven CEOs and organizational leaders to help them create courageous, high-performance organizations.  She is also the co-founder of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Professional Association (DEIBPA) – currently in formation.  Janine is as a contributing author to On the Shoulders of Mighty Women, which is due out on in late June 2022, and the author of the forthcoming book, Why Are the Soft Skills so Damn Hard…and Many Other Things We Got Wrong.  She is the host of the podcast, The Cost of Not Paying Attention.
