In this very exciting Eerie Extra, co-host Katherine Troyer talks with horror author Mike Thorn. Our conversation includes discussions of what scares us in real life, the relationship between writing horror fiction and horror criticism, and the value of horror as a genre. Mike Thorn is a prolific and thoughtful horror writer. His June 2021 Darkest Hours: Expanded Edition powerfully combines short stories with horror analysis. Thorn is also the author of the February 2021 novel Shelter for the Damned. Whether you are looking for body horror or psychological terror (or something else altogether!), Mike Thorn's intimate knowledge of the genre as both a writer and scholar insures that you will be reading thoughtful and terrifying horror! Alienated from his parents and peers, Mark finds within the shack an escape greater than anything he has ever experienced. But it isn’t long before the place begins revealing its strange, powerful sentience. This week, we're excited to have the opportunity to welcome Mike Thorn to the show to celebrate the release of his latest novel, Shelter for the Damned, which is out now through JournalStone Publishing! Looking for a secluded place to hang out and smoke cigarettes, teenagers Mark, Adam, and Scott stumble across a mysterious shack in a suburban field. The friends had been through this area countless times, but this is the first time they remember seeing the shack. Adam and Scott aren't all that impressed, but the first time Mark enters The Shack, it feels like the perfect escape and he already feels the pull of The Shacks energy. Over time, Mark realizes there is an intelligence residing in The Shack, one that expects things from Mark in exchange for the refuge it provides from his life. As Mark grows more dependent on The Shack, his life starts changing in ways he could've never imagined. Shelter for the Damned is loaded with nightmarish scenes and if the idea of a dark coming-of-age story meeting Kathe Koja's The Cipher intrigues you, this is definitely the book for you. Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about Shelter for the Damned, his influences, coming of age narratives, toxic masculinity, suburban horror, Stephen King's Dreamcatcher, possession films and so much more. We had a lot of fun recording this episode and hanging out with Mike. We hope you guys enjoy the conversation as much as we did!
Geez, it’s been a while since we got spooky on the show, hasn’t it? High time we brought back Mike Thorn to talk about how Wes Craven fused meta storytelling and horror in two franchises: A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. We’ll permeate the membranes of reality, disassemble Craven’s views on horror’s social and political value, and laugh about how Matthew Lillard yells “BOO-GAH” when he imitates a gunshot. Mike has a terrific new horror novel, Shelter for the Damned, that you can check out in print or e-book format directly through Journalstone, or you can find it on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Walmart.
Horror author Mike Thorn joins us to talk social commentary in COLOR OUT OF SPACE. We talk isolation, environmentalism, family, tomatoes, alpaca milk, and Lovecraft's undying racism. Check out and look for his new novel SHELTER FOR THE DAMNED.
we welcome a very special guest, critic and horror author mike thorn, to the hotbox for a tribute to the late filmmaker stacy title, the potentially vulgar auteur behind films like The Bye Bye Man, Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror, & The Last Supper. we chop it up with mike about the social satire of stacy title's work, the nihilism and horrifying mind memes of the bye bye man, & hall of fame stoner snoop dogg's horror filmography. in the opening riff zone, nathan puts it all on the line and defends the unfairly maligned plastic pop art toy Wonder Woman 1984. say hello to hotbox before u say bye bye. Author and critic Mike Thorn swings by to talk about Prince of Darkness, John Carpenter's 1987 horror film, and how it both expresses and interrogates the subject of epistemophobia — the fear of knowledge. It’s a great movie to go into knowing little, so be aware that we spoil the entire plot in this episode. We get into how the film withholds or ambiguates information for the audience, the film's balance between pessimism and intellectual humility, and its place in Carpenter's "Apocalypse Cycle" of movies.
