We are excited to bring you the second episode of Journeys of Discovery – Change Makers' collaborative series with the Royal Philharmonic Orchesta. Over the course of these interviews, Michael explores fundamental questions about what it means to be human that accompany nine incredible concerts. This week, the themes are Freedom and Redemption, and our guest Katy Emck OBE, knows a thing or two about both of those. As Founding Director of Fine Cell Work, Katy speaks to Michael about how she is helping to transform the lives of prisoners and ex-prisoners through needlework. Prisons can be “places of soul, spirit and connection”, says Katy. Rather than carrying out their sentences “full of rage and self hate”, prisoners should be permitted to embark on a journey of “self understanding and self acceptance”. Craftwork in prisons is common, but Katy feels there is something about the intense focus of needlework that provides a much needed “release from the here and now”. Whilst momentarily being transported out of their cell's confinement, prisoners are also developing a skill, creating something they can be proud of, and generating income. This positions them with the self belief to rebuild meaningful, independent, crime free lives once they have finished their sentences. There is no better depiction of Katy's belief in the power of freedom and redemption than her favourite song by Nina Simone, ‘I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free', which she describes as the ultimate song about freedom, release and the longing we all have to break free of inhibition and to be connected. Through needlework, Fine Cell Work is opening one of the few doors of opportunity available to prisoners – allowing them both a glimpse of freedom, and a chance for redemption.

Grounding this conversation within Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, guest Samuel Bautista Lazo, brings listeners into an insightful conversation on the value of craftwork that connects us to the past and plants seeds for the future. Here, Samuel outlines the weaving traditions of the Benzaa people, offering insight into a trade and lifeway shaped intimately by ancestry and the land. Through his family's weaving business, Samuel emphasizes the importance of creating connection and meaning with the objects we need to sustain life. In an age of mass alienation and mass consumption, intimately knowing our relationship to the objects that sustain, to the skilled labor that creates, and to the land that provides is a radical act. How might we cultivate such connections within our lives? Dr. Samuel Bautista Lazo is a Benzaa (Zapotec) weaver from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2013 he obtained his PhD in Engineering from the University of Liverpool in the UK, doing research in the topic of Sustainable Manufacturing. After obtaining his PhD in the UK, Samuel decided to go back home and connect back with his community and family weaving heritage. Being back home struck a chord in his life and made him realize that his community was already practicing an ancient form of Sustainable Manufacturing that is still alive in the many craft traditions of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the eight regions in his state. From this place, Samuel has rooted even more within his community and family weaving business and from there and through the language of the ancient textiles he spends a great deal of time teaching, educating and planting the seeds for creating a future that heals the relationship of humans with the web of life.Join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewild for an extended version of this episode.Music by Mariee Siou. How do you take a simple moment and turn it into something that is memorable every single day? Many of us have had wonderful experiences at hotels, but residential living has been slow to embrace the lessons of hospitality. In today's episode of The Experience Strategy Podcast, we're talking to Trevor Hightower, the founder of Craftwork, about creating meaningful moments for apartment residents and powerful ways to disrupt the residential real estate industry.  In This Episode: [02:00] Building apartments has always been more about the physical space and less about the experience. Here's how Craftwork is changing the entire hospitality experience.   [08:00] How Trevor balances the needs of commercial and residential clients 12:55] More and more innovators from outside the real estate industry are coming in to disrupt.   [15:55] What does it actually mean to have a customer-focused business in real estate?  [19:00] A different approach to residential living creates stories where both residents and those who work in the buildings feel seen and valued.  [20:05] To keep things fresh in real estate, you have to make changes that are authentic.  [23:15] What's next for Craftwork?   Key Takeaways: At the end of the day, it's the experience of the end-user that creates the most value for the asset.  More and more owners are seeing the importance of experience for their end-user.  Craftwork's missional focus and the benefits of Craftwork to their clients, are directly aligned with each other, creating a customer focused mission. Authenticity is crucial for the real estate industry to stay fresh and competitive.    Bio:  Trevor Hightower's experience in positions of leadership in the military and in the commercial real estate industry have all helped shape his philosophy and passion for community, entrepreneurship, place and seeing others around him flourish. He is the founder of Workflourish, a coworking space in Houston, which merged with Craftwork in early 2018. Prior to this, he was Managing Director of Houston for CBRE. He now serves as President of Craftwork. Tyler (wife), Chase (son), Grace (daughter), and Elle (daughter) are the top of his list to serve and he loves them dearly. Craftwork enhanced the revenue model and mojo of a coworking space by combining it with an open-to-the public coffee shop. Coffee in the front, coworking in the back. Craftwork started experimenting on partnering with developers of multi-family apartment buildings to build a Craftwork location into the amenity set. The buildout was paid for, but they still signed a lease. COVID struck....all coffee shops closed down. The leasing model showed its weaknesses. Trevor shares his story about how COVID accelerated their pursuit of a stronger model for their business - hospitality as a service...what that looks like and where they're headed.

EVERYTHING in the World is Whatever Your ATTITUDE Towards It Is I posted a video of @keeganmic speaking to the @pennstatefball team. I thought it was extremely POWERFUL stuff The beginning of what he said is above in the caption, followed by the quote on the photo, amongst other things. Think about it and really buy into it today, and everyday: Rather than I can’t or I won’t, ALWAYS Have a Consciousness That Says I WILL If you’re not doing it now (whatever “it” is for you), Don’t get discouraged. BELIEVE that you just haven’t done it YET You may not be there yet, quite frankly none of us are‼️ The day you “arrived” or think you’ve “made it” is the day you start letting others catch up, and surpass where you are. Don’t be satisfied. Have that mindset that you’re not there YET, but YOU WILL BE.
