Lindsay Lerman is a writer and translator. Her new novel, WHAT ARE YOU (CLASH Books) is out now. Her first book I'm From Nowhere was published in 2019. Her essays, short stories, and poetry have been published in The Los Angeles Review of Books, Entropy, Hobart, Southwest Review, and elsewhere. She is currently adapting her short story Real Love—which first appeared in NY Tyrant Magazine—for the screen. She is represented by Abby Walters at CAA. In the intro David and I talk about Pascal Laugier's MARTYRS (2008). The interview with Lindsay starts at 27:42. In this conversation we get into: locating and living through the cusp of our time, the interconnection between nuance and chaos, dissolution, the unspoken rules of commodification, giving into the productivity of terror, giving yourself up to the universe, barfing into the void, celebrating the irrational, and the importance of play in the face of utility. We also talk about Bataille's philosophy around expenditure and waste as a way to explore Lindsey's outlook and work as an author. WHAT ARE YOU: Hypnotic, dreamlike, lyrical essays tell the story of a woman trapped in a destructive love affair with the universe. Her understanding of power, desire, and complicity must be transformed again and again. Addressed to an amorphous you, Lerman wrestles with the forces of birth and death, creation and destruction—going deep into the subterranean strata of consciousness and back. PRAISE: “An incantatory and hypnotic work of voice, What Are You exists at the apex of creation and destruction, desire and shame, innocence and experience, violence and tenderness, rapture and suffering, hunger and the denial of flesh. To read it is to feel the terror of falling from a great height—but wanting to; maybe even choosing to jump.” - SARAH GERARD, AUTHOR OF SUNSHINE STATE AND TRUE LOVE "Passionate, dispassionate, hypnotic, deadpan, ecstatic, Lindsay Lerman's What Are You, read it now. We are delight to return as the official podcast for 2021 Summer Scares! This episode is our first installment of a series covering the 2021 Summer Scares library summer reading program. The Horror Writers’ Association has partnered with Book Riot and Library Journal to curate the Summer Scares reading list, which includes three books each in the Adult, YA, and Middle Grade categories. In 2019, we chatted with the liaisons from each category in LOTF 32, LOTF 34, and LOTF 36. In 2020, we had roundtable-style panel conversations with the authors from each category. You can find these here : LOTF 56, LOTF 57, and LOTF 58. And this year, we're shaking things up yet again! This first episode is extra special, because we begin with a conversation with author Silvia Moreno Garcia, this year's Summer Scares author spokesperson. She is the bestselling author of the novels Mexican Gothic, Gods of Jade and Shadow, Certain Dark Things, and Untamed Shore, among others. She has also edited several anthologies, including the World Fantasy Award-winning She Walks in Shadows (a.k.a. Cthulhu's Daughters). Gods of Jade and Shadow was the 2020 American Library Association Reading List winner in the Fantasy category, appeared on many year's best lists, and won the 2020 Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic. Silvia is also the publisher of Innsmouth Free Press, a columnist for The Washington Post, and a book reviewer for NPR. You can follow her on Twitter at @silviamg. In the first half of the episode, we talk to Silvia about her writing and reading history, her previous experience with libraries, her passion projects with her small press Innsmouth Free Press, and her involvement with Summer Scares 2021. Find Silvia: Twitter | Website | Innsmouth Free Press In the second half of the show, Mackenzie and Lisa discuss the three adult books for Summer Scares 2021. The adult picks for the 2021 Summer Scares program are: The Hunger by Alma Katsu (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 2018) The Cipher by Kathe Koja (originally published 1991 by Dell but reissued Meerkat Press, 2020) Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi, Translator Jonathan Wright (Penguin Books, 2018) To discover more regarding the Summer Scares program (including excellent resources!), check out the Summer Scares information website. This week, we're excited to have the opportunity to welcome Mike Thorn to the show to celebrate the release of his latest novel, Shelter for the Damned, which is out now through JournalStone Publishing! Looking for a secluded place to hang out and smoke cigarettes, teenagers Mark, Adam, and Scott stumble across a mysterious shack in a suburban field. The friends had been through this area countless times, but this is the first time they remember seeing the shack. Adam and Scott aren't all that impressed, but the first time Mark enters The Shack, it feels like the perfect escape and he already feels the pull of The Shacks energy. Over time, Mark realizes there is an intelligence residing in The Shack, one that expects things from Mark in exchange for the refuge it provides from his life. As Mark grows more dependent on The Shack, his life starts changing in ways he could've never imagined. Shelter for the Damned is loaded with nightmarish scenes and if the idea of a dark coming-of-age story meeting Kathe Koja's The Cipher intrigues you, this is definitely the book for you. Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about Shelter for the Damned, his influences, coming of age narratives, toxic masculinity, suburban horror, Stephen King's Dreamcatcher, possession films and so much more. We had a lot of fun recording this episode and hanging out with Mike. We hope you guys enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

This week, we're excited to welcome Kathe Koja to the show to celebrate the release of her new collection Velocities and the upcoming re-release of The Cipher, both on Meerkat Press. This was a truly special conversation as Kathe's work has had a huge impact on all three of us as Horror fans and she is truly a master of the genre. Her works have a legendary reputation among genre fans, and for good reason. Her prose has a darkly poetic quality and is infused with a raw, unfiltered energy that crackles on every page and consumes readers, keeping them immersed in the unique worlds and the lives of her characters until the very last page. This was an engaging conversation with one of our favorite authors and we're excited to be able to share it with you. We had a great time and learned so much from Kathe, we look forward to having her on the show again in the future. If you have yet to read Kathe's work, a good place to start would be Velocities. It 's a perfect showcase of the many different styles she writes in. During the course of the episode, we discuss The Dark Factory, immersive narratives, collaborating with other artists, bringing your experiences to books as a reader, social isolation, how horror can tackle different emotions, the history of The Cipher at Dell Abyss, handling stories that get shelved, battling your craft, Velocities and the story selection process, working with Meerkat, discussing Dr. Seuss, a plan for a Velocities live event, options, humor in horror and so much more.

We're chatting with Detroit-based author Kathe Koja about the immersive qualities of her writing - not only in the way in which she creates vivid descriptions and dynamic characters through her words but also through her own theatre company. Koja has a new book of short stories, Velocities, coming out in April. She is currently working on a conceptual "book" that will utterly defy the boundaries of sequential pages between two covers, (it's called "Dark Factory.") Koja has been honored with the Bram Stoker Award and the Locus Award - she writes short fiction, young adult fiction. She is consistently redefining the genre we would conventionally call "horror."  Referenced in this episode: Tyke The Little Mutt: https://www.abebooks.com/signed-first-edition/TYKE-Little-Mutt-wDJ-author-signed/383430028/bd Also, images of her 1990 novel, Cipher, and her upcoming release, Velocites: Also: A Dead Man in Deptford: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Dead_Man_in_Deptford Green Velvet - Destination Unknownhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gseTQGX6rY  & more news from Kathe Koja: https://kathekoja.com/news-1/2019/5/15/dark-factory-and-patreon

This month on The Writer and the Critic, your valiant hosts, Ian Mond and Kirstyn McDermott, venture forth to the home of their special guest: Galactic Suburbian, Alex Pierce. Having been rewarded with red wine and orange cake, they discuss the origins of Galactic Suburbia as well as the future of its brand new sister podcast, Galactic Chat, then proceed to paddle about in the murky waters of genre and gender. Alex admits a literary crush on Alastair Reynolds. Ian confesses mild paranoia about his reading habits. Kirstyn warns that her inner feminist is pretty much permanently on the loose now. Oh, and Happy Birthday, Galactic Suburbia! Alex has chosen Bold As Love by Gwyneth Jones as her book for this month and so begins a rollicking roundtable on rock stars, romance and revolution. For those wishing to avoid spoilers -- and there are quite a few -- the discussion of this novel begins at 22:30 of the podcast and ends around 45:30. The official podcast books for March are My Name is Will by Jess Winfield, which Ian has recommended (but has a little trouble remembering), and Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja, which Kirstyn has chosen (and may or may not squee about). For your convenience once again, the starting points are 45:30 for My Name is Will and 01:00:00 for Under the Poppy. For a final wrap-up and preview of future podcasting goodness, tune back in by 01:31:30. For next month's podcast, Ian has chosen The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and Kirstyn has picked Liar by Justine Larbalestier. Plus, there will be a third, listener-recommended title: Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek. And finally, a heads-up for May when Ian and Kirstyn will be discussing the Black Out / All Clear duology by Connie Willis, as recommended by another listener. With over a thousand pages between the two books, your thoughtful hosts decided to let you know well in advance. See, they really are lovely people! *** Just a reminder that The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that the plucky and generously endowed heroine comes to the realisation that she is simply an avatar trapped within a highly complex but ultimately futile online multi-player gaming system. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***

The three of them discuss the recent controversy surrounding Bitch Media's list of 100 Young Adult Books for the Feminist Reader and the problematic removal of three books from said list. Ian mentions a blog post Kirstyn previously wrote about the issue. Talk of censorship, feminism and the complicated nature of list-making enues. Ian and Kirstyn then chat with Felicity about her own work, the flavour of horror that she writes, and why, before launching into a review of her chosen book for the month -- Death Most Definite by Brisbane author, Trent Jamieson. For those wishing to avoid spoilers -- and there are many -- the discussion of this novel begins at minute 28:00 of the podcast and ends around 49:00. You're welcome. The official podcast books for March are Last Days by Brian Evenson (recommended by Ian) and White Cat by Holly Black (Kirstyn's pick). For your convenience once again, the starting points are 49:00 for White Cat and 01:08:00 for Last Days. For a final wrap-up and some tasteless, non-book related jokes from Ian, make sure you've tuned back in by the 01:32:30 point. Note to selves: it is possibly not the best idea to imbibe wine while podcasting. Next month, The Writer and the Critic hits the road again to meet with another special guest: Alexandra Pierce from Galactic Suburbia. Alex has chosen Bold as Love by Gwyneth Jones as her recommended read. Ian has recommended My Name is Will by Jess Winfield, while Kirstyn has chosen Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja. Just a reminder that The Writer and the Critic has now adopted more of a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that the protagonist falls in love with a hairless ferret only to discover in a shocking last page revelation that said ferret is actually a killer whale in disguise. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats!
