It's Valentine's Day (well...a few days after) and what better way to tell someone you love them by scarring them for life at a 6th grade dance so that they grow up to be David Boreanaz with a bloody nose and make it their mission to murder you with hallmark greeting cards while wearing a cupid mask. This week, we are talking about Valentine from 2001. One of the last major slashers of the early 2000's that was playing off the coat tails of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Urban Legend. Valentine, (directed by Jamie Blanks of Urban Legend fame) tells the story of Paige, Dorthy, Lilly, and Kate who are stalked by a mysterious masked killer mask who could very well be a a specter from their past (sound a bit familiar). Starring Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, Jessica Cauffiel, Jessica Capshaw, Katherine Heigl, and David Boreanaz (at the height of his Angel/Buffy fame) this movie failed to land back in 2001 but does this movie truly suck or is it simply an underrated slasher way ahead of it's time? The guys talk about the killer reveal that makes no sense, the urban legends that were clearly created solely for the film, campus radio rules, Brad Dourif's tragic character arc and much more. Joshua Jackson's role in the film leads to a brief interlude delving into teen drama Dawson's Creek. The college campus is also intriguing, as nobody appears to be concerned about the numerous missing or murdered students. Additionally, the campus radio station, with Tara Reid, freely provides handy sexual advice!Plus we shall be finding a place on the leaderboard for the movie during our Ranking. We hope you enjoy the show, thanks for listening!Email - Horrorprojectpodcast@hotmail.com  X (Formerly Twitter) - @TheHorrorProje1Instagram - horrorprojectpodcastTikTok - @horrorprojectpodcast

The Blind Rage podcast: Horror Movie Commentaries

“You're cute, Paul. But you're not that fuckin' cute.” The Blind Rage Podcast takes a look at Jamie Blanks' URBAN LEGEND, one of the few post-SCREAM slashers still widely remembered. And, like SCREAM, cast actors from popular teen dramas (Jared Leto of MY SO-CALLED LIFE; Joshua Jackson of DAWSON'S CREEK) to help create the ensemble. The most memorable performances, however, are by horror icons Robert Englund, Brad Dourif, and Danielle Harris. While far from perfect, it's easy to see why URBAN LEGEND has maintained a dedicated cult following, as opposed to being quickly forgotten, as so many horror films of this era have. The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories. Resident Evil is a 2002 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1997. Several writers and filmmakers, such as Alan B. McElroy, George A. Romero and Jamie Blanks, were initially hired to direct and write the film, but their scripts were rejected. In 2000, Anderson was announced as writer and director. Developed as a prequel set in the same continuity as the video game series, the film was initially titled Resident Evil: Ground Zero, but was retitled after the September 11 attacks. Cast was announced in early 2001 and principal photography commenced in March 2001 in Berlin. Resident Evil was theatrically released in Germany on March 12, 2002, by Constantin Film Verleih, and in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2002, by Screen Gems and Pathé Distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $103 million worldwide against a production budget of $33 million. It was followed by five sequels establishing their own alternate continuity: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

It grossed $72.5 million worldwide on a budget of $14 million, and received generally negative reviews from critics, with chief criticisms being that the film was a blatant rip-off of Scream (1996). The film has been credited by both cinema and folklore scholars as being one of the first major films to redistribute the urban legends and folklore depicted within it to the public.

Suffering from withdrawals from candy hearts and someone whispering sweet nothings into your crusty ears? Well, let us cure what ails you with a review of Valentine from 2001. That's right, the movie that launched David Boreanaz's film career to... what... oh, I am thinking of The Rock. Which one is David Boreanaz then? Why am I typing my stream of consciousness? The film is a very loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by Tom Savage. Both works center around a revenge plot by a nerd, who has been cruelly ridiculed. In the film, the young welp was accused of sexually assaulting a girl, who withdrew her consent for a clandestine smooch session after a group of boys found them and she became ashamed. Years later, the nerd, who's got a great parlor trick of making his nose bleed virtually whenever, goes on a killing spree against that girl and her friends. Interestingly, he does not beat up the boys who tear his pants off and beat him up in the middle of a school dance, but maybe they will be in the sequel... that they are DEFINITELY making... after almost 20 years. The serial killer gives threatening valentine cards to each of the victims. We talk about why that was a bad idea and how he should have diverted the arts and crafts time to better plotting out his murder spree. Aside from Boreanaz and Denise Richards, there are no real big time actors in the film. Now, we can have a chicken/ egg debate if they did not have worthwhile careers, which is why they accepted a part in this film, or if appearing in this film all but ensured that they would not get work elsewhere, but this is the description of a podcast, and there is no moderator, so let's bookmark that idea for later. The film has not aged very well in certain ways, but showing how obtuse and arguably toxic men could be 20 years ago, through the #metoo lens of today, adds a layer to what would otherwise be an underwhelming movie. We also talk about the connections between this film and the Urban Legends franchise. This is actually how director, Jamie Blanks, got his gig on Valentine. What do you think of the Cherub getup? Is the statuesque mask creepy or hoaky? How does the costume compare to the legendary slashers of the Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises? Scream blew the doors off the 90s slasher era for sure, and one of those films that I feel survived well in the moshpit of teen horror we got during was Urban Legend... Jamie Blanks did an amazing job crafting a inventive and stylish slasher, that is truly underrated for me. So when the news broke recently about the old UL being rebooted, I was actually surprised. And while I am off and on with the idea of reboots, this is one I feel can definitely work well in it's favor. Enjoy, people.

This week on the Horror Junkies Podcast we continue our two-month long look into some of the best and worst 90's Slasher movies made. So if you have any suggestions, please make sure to hit us up.  Patrick picked the movies this week and secretly threw in a nice little theme with his picks. The first movie up for discussion is one that is sure to be a favourite for anyone in the horror genre. Candyman was released in 1992 and directed by Bernard Rose, and single handly made us all fear bees. The next movie we discuss is one of those titles that got lost in the vast amount of teen slashers that involved college students getting their insides ripped out. Of course, we're talking about the 1998 release by Jamie Blanks; Urban Legends.  Want to be featured on the show and give your own thoughts about what we're discussing or give a shout out to your mom? On this week's all-new entry in the 2018 Halloween Spooktacular, the gang is tackling the Old Navy-styled, totally hip, post-Scream talky-talk chiller—Urban Legend! Why did Brad Dourif have to be creepier than usual when trying to save that woman's life? Why is there only one campus security officer for the entire school? And how is that dean allowed to just ban the police from campus? PLUS: Loose Loomis ain't got nothin' on Tara Reid's call-in show!Urban Legend stars Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Michael Rosenbaum, Loretta Devine, Joshua Jackson, Tara Reid, John Neville, and Robert Englund; directed by Jamie Blanks.
