Chicago-based academic and horror obsessive Peter Raleigh joins to discuss reliable journeyman director Peter Hyams and his 1997 creature feature, 'The Relic'. Maligned critically and a failure at the box office upon its initial release, the film has endured as an example of the tactile, sturdy genre work of the 90s with capable hands on both sides of the camera, including brilliant creature designs from legendary special effects guru Stan Winston. We discuss the film's impressive balancing act, managing to glide over a host ludicrous genre tropes and plot holes with ease while maintining a keen pacing and immersion. Then, we praise the excellent directorial work of Hyams, who serves here as his own cinematographer and generates a mesmerizing, impressionistic array of horror imagery in stark, dimly lit spaces galore. Finally, we discuss the delights of the monster movie, its flattening of distinctions among people that make for compelling survival thrills, and why the sensibilities of the decade were uniquely attuned to the subgenre. COVID-19 hit the world pretty hard in many ways. With the large initial deaths that occurred, and then the lockdowns, paranoia, and even the politicisation of the disease, the entire world lived in fear that left many folks never recovering. As the evening begins to settle on the quaint property, a strange car pulls into the driveway and the two young woman feel something is not right. The movie is the latest film co-written by Kevin Williamson known for such things as SCREAM (1996), DAWSON'S CREEK, and THE FOLLOWING. The movie was directed by John Hyams known for BLACK SUMMER, ALONE (2020), and Z NATION. Your co-hosts are joined by actor Dan Lench (CIRCLE (2015)) to discuss this well received movie, their experiences with COVID, and how the film fits into the pandemic itself.

It's time to jump back into the Universal Soldier saga once again, this time looking at the final (and darkest) installment in the franchise! In this wild nightmarish sequel, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren return once again, this time joining forces (!) and taking a backseat to martial arts sensation, Scott Adkins! Adkins stars as John, a family man who finds himself in the middle of a power struggle between an army of rogue Unisols and the government trying to reclaim control of them. John Hyams also returns to the director's chair once again, and this time he brings in a Lynchian element to the Unisol franchise, combined with Apocalypse Now and The Manchurian Candidate! And if you thought Hyams' vision in Universal Soldier: Regeneration was brutal, Day of Reckoning goes to a whole other level! Joining me to discuss this film is Ben Highton and Alex Balerdi of The Arniethology Presents podcast! Just how different is this installment from the 1992 original? How does Scott Adkins do at taking the reigns of the franchise? How bold is the direction they're taking JCVD's Luc Devereaux character? When the television series BLACK SUMMER (2019) hit Netflix, the zombie apocalypse theme got a great refresh.  Zombies had begun to feel stale but BLACK SUMMER was an intense show that felt like you were right in the action with its interesting camera dynamics.  With COVID-19 hitting, a production for a second season seemed in flux.  Co-host Mike even felt a second season may not even be needed and worried it would not hold up to Season One.  But not surprising, in 2021, BLACK SUMMER Season Two appeared.  Dark Discussions had some prior knowledge as we interviewed showrunner John Hyams in 2020 for his movie https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/dark-discussions-podcast-episode-458-alone-2020/ (ALONE (2020)) where he told us Season Two was back in production (his interview with us was on location actually). Dark Discussions Podcast once again were able to interview John Hyams about this amazing Season Two of BLACK SUMMER.  He gives us an insight of the characters, the techniques used to film, the motivations of the lead protagonists/antagonists, and so much more.  Co-host Philip was even able to ask if Taylor Swift could get a cameo in Season Three (she's good friends with lead actress Jaime King and also godmother to her son.)   Get ready for an awesome interview with one of today's best talents.

Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning is a really strange, violent and thoughtful art movie. John Hyams gives the viewer the beloved franchise characters in a meta way using the first film's own mythos to comment back on itself, filmmaking, violence and culture while also just being really cool and fun. Van Damme is subdued, regal and almost godlike in this role while Dolph doles out the enterainment. Scott Adkins does an impressive job at humbly but expertly taking the torch from his revered predecessor. The brothers are joined once again by special guest star Keenan Marr Tamblyn who discusses his new trading card art project that you can find @discodromeart Enjoy this really fun episode! Please involve yourselves in BLM initiatives. The brothers took their John Hyams film journey slightly out of order positioning the Universal Soldier: Regeneration episode after the Dragon Eyes ep. This proved to be a smart choice because all of the glimmers of excellence observable in Dragon Eyes were on FULL DISPLAY in Regeneration. A gritty sequel that doesn't focus on the logistics of the scifi aspect for too long. This film takes all the best aspects of the first Universal Soldier film and turns them up. High octane. Thrilling. Strangely philosophical. With an EPIC Dolph performance. This episode also features fan fav guest and designer of the T4M artwork: Keenan Marr Tamblyn. How bold is the direction they’re taking JCVD’s Luc Devereaux character? And does this film cross a line in terms of its unrelenting violence? Join us as Ben, Alex, and I embark on our own day of reckoning and break down Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning! On this month's episode we're jumping into sequel territory and looking back at the reunion no one had expected -- 2009's Universal Soldier: Regeneration! In this direct sequel to the 1992 original, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren reunite as Luc Deveraux and Andrew Scott -- resurrected soldiers who rekindle their feud, this time at a Chernobyl reactor! The clock is ticking, and the heroic (?) Luc Deveraux has just a few hours to save hostages, defuse a bomb, take out a Russian militia, and square off against not just the next upgraded universal soldier, but a clone of his mortal nemesis, Andrew Scott! Joining the podcast to help me discuss this one is David Ullman from his podcast, Long Walk for a Short Drink! David is a huge fan of the work of Jean-Claude Van Damme, so it was a pleasure bringing him on the show to help discuss the second reunion of JCVD and Dolph! But did it live up to our expectations? Let’s just say that David and I had different reactions, which made for a fun conversation... Just how cold, oppressive, and brutal is this film in comparison with the original? In what ways is this film akin to Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman? How little are Lundgren and Van Damme actually in this film? And what kinds of artistic flourishes does John Hyams bring to this one? Join us as we suit up and jump back in on the action that is Universal Soldier: Regeneration Major thanks to David Ullman for joining me. The little film that could.  Small, quiet, and unfamiliar films pop up every so often.  Some aren't necessarily original yet they are done so well.  And these movies sometimes spread by word of mouth.  One film, ALONE (2020) directed by John Hyams, has slowly grown in popularity.  One VOD service, iTunes, actually had it lost among their “Independent” section of films.  Now three weeks later, ALONE is in their top 40 horror movies of the month. Jessica (Jules Willcox) is a young widow who has been living with depression for far too long.  Out of the blue, she has decided she's had enough.  She packs up all her belongings and heads out to the Northwest to start anew.  While traveling the forested and remote roads, she almost gets in an accident with an SUV.  After the perpetrator (Marc Menchaca) shows signs of road rage, Jessica finds out that traveling alone may not have been a good thing at all. The movie has had a run outside of VOD too with forty-four screens at drive-ins throughout the states.  Directed by John Hyams, off a screenplay by Mattias Olsson, the movie stars Jules Willcox in possibly her first major role along with Marc Menchaca as the stranger.  John Hyams, who's the showrunner of the successful series BLACK SUMMER (2019), joins your co-hosts to answer some further questions they have after doing their review of the movie.  The director may even discuss a bit about season 2 of Black Summer.

Huge budgets and A-list actors are just two of the things you'd be unlikely to find in Direct to Video (DTV) movies, and that's exactly the case in this weeks top 5 about movies released straight to video or streaming services. Perhaps you'll find out about some unknown classic in a subject close to Reegs's heart, or maybe more likely you'll find yourself hearing about the 3rd, 4th, 5th or later sequels to movies that no one cared that much about to begin with. But with talented directors like John Hyams, Isaac Florentine and Jesse V. Johnson under discussion as well as some excellent acting talent such as Britain's finest, Scott Adkins or Coolio you may just find a hidden gem.Our main feature is Terminator: Dark Fate. The 6th installment in the terminator franchise, this could almost be a DTV release itself were it not for the $185m budget and the return of the Terminator holy trilogy James Cameron, Arnie and Linda Hamilton. Released in 2019 this was not a huge hit at the Box Office but were the Dads entertained? As ever, that is the only question that counts. The kids feature is the Netflix original series Free Rein. This horsey themed, stable-set children's soap opera would work well with the addition of time travel, dystopian futures and messianic saviors but in lieu of that, can the story of American Zoe spending her summer frolicking with her pony in the hay bales on an unnamed English island capture the Dads imagination? It seems unlikely but you never know...You can usually find the Dads annoying people on Twitter - @dads_film - or on Facebook or via email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

On today's episode, I have actor Tom Everett Scott and Director John Hyams! Tom and John joined myself and Austin Grant to take about their new film "All Square", which will be premiering at SXSW on March 10th.  We had such a great time talking to Tom and John about the process of making "All Square", learning about the screenwriter of the film, working together on Z Nation, a little chat about "That Thing You Do", and so much more.  A huge thanks to Tom and John for taking the time to join us on this episode. Make sure to go see "All Square" at SXSW. Austin and I absolutely loved this film and you will not want to miss it. Film director John Hyams sat with me in a noisy Hollywood motel room to discuss his solid career as a director, from his terrific documentary start, to his great work with Jean Claude Van Damme, especially the bravura surprise that is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, and his unique childhood that, along with art school and some illustration chops, helped prepare him to become the powerful filmmaker he is today. We get into the difference between directing for TV and feature films, how TV and movies have switched narrative places, the future of cinema, and some incredibly tangible mental tools that allow you to make better films (or really any project.) In addition to dozens of great takeaways for creators, this episode is chock-a-block with behind the scenes wisdom and anecdotes from some very notable projects and moments in time, including the Universal Soldier films, Z Nation, his secret doc that I don't want to spoil here, and it's incredibly timed connection to the world of MMA/UFC, to some projects he didn't direct, but rather observed being made... Why am I being vague? Listen to find out! Follow John Hyams on twitter @jrhyams. Keep watching Z Nation, the Originals & Chicago PD to support John's TV work, and watch out for his upcoming projects Bullets for Breakfast and the (serious) remake of Maniac Cop (written by Ed Brubaker!!)
