The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off today...and the question on everyone's mind is: what will be the great movies? Mostly, people look to the Cannes Competition (the films that compete for the Palme d'Or) to find the best films. But it's a lesser-known fact that many amazing films screen in the festival's sidebars. And many of the best films in cinema history have screened in the festival's sidebars. In fact, Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, which was named the greatest film of all time in the 2022 Sight & Sound poll did not screen in competition! It screened in the Directors' Fortnight. So on today's episode, Alex peels back the curtain on how all the different parts of the Cannes Film Festival work together. And she talks about the amazing films you've heard of (and some you probably haven't) that have screened outside the festival's competition. And she talks about some of the films she's excited for this year. Finally, Alex talks about some of the films she's excited for in this year's competition, and how they were already making fantastic films years ago that were hiding out in the festival's sidebars. *** Become a Seventh Row Insider to stay updated on the best films at Cannes this year and in past years that you might not otherwise stumble upon *** Interested in picking up Seventh Row's ebooks on Lynne Ramsay, Joachim Trier, Joanna Hogg, Debra Granik, or Céline Sciamma? The BFI's screenings of JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 COMMERCE QUAY, 1080 BRUXELLES were all sold out. Luckily, we were both able to see it on a big screen elsewhere. In this podcast we discuss why this is a film to see on a big screen, how it remains a radical film, how the first scene sets a context, how Jeanne Dielman lives in a pimped world where the very same money she gets from men she gives to men. We discuss how the bare bones of the story could have been done as melodrama or noir and the significance of rendering it as ‘slow cinema', including all that's been left out of cinema previously (the various kinds of women's work). We admire the three-day structure as well as the formal rigour and precision which creates Dielman's world and Ackerman's point-of-view on it; how the film puts into play elements that are never rendered explicit (is the son gay?). We also discuss Delphine Seyrig, the muse insoumise, in the light of her art-house and activist careers (the program for the Queen Sofia exhibition on her work and career is in the blogpost); the film itself in the context of Second Wave Feminism; how the film remains radical in that it is simultaneously a depiction of what Tate brothers bros think women should be, a refutation of those ideas, and women's frustration/ explosion/ revenge in response. A film that is almost half a century old and feels continuously relevant

We are really excited to be collaborating with the BFI once again, particularly for an episode on Belgian auteur filmmaker Chantal Akerman as they begin an in-depth retrospective of her work. In the autumn of 2022, Akerman's masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, was voted the greatest film of all time in Sight and Sound Magazine's once-a-decade poll. We covered that moment with a double episode - which would be a fantastic primer for this show if you haven't listened to it yet. The episode features a conversation in which Dario speaks to Céline Brouwez, the co-ordinator of the Fondation Chantal Akerman at CINEMATEK, and season curator Isabel Stevens. The discourse surrounding the Sight and Sound poll result and its aftermath as a cultural moment frames the chat. Céline discusses the incredible impact of the poll result on her organisation, and Isabel relives the night of the big announcement and the immediate shockwaves that ran through not only cinephile circles but the broader media. We talk about how the moment caused a something revaluation of what constitutes "great" cinema, not to mention great art, and provoked something of a minor crisis in cultural gatekeeping, particularly with regard to lists. One of the things that this BFI retrospective - entitled Adventures in Perception - is keen to address is Akerman's body of work beyond Jeanne Dielman. We go into this in detail, talking through the elements of archiving, restoration and presentation. We think through the breadth of her oeuvre, which has few generic boundaries. And, of course, we explore Akerman herself: her formative experience, the influence of her mother, and her rigorous form borne of a commitment to artistic commitment and morality. Neil and I then reflect further on the notion of a feminist/female cinematic perspective and the philosophical conundrum: can there be an objective definition of art? As part of the collaboration, we have four copies of the Akerman Auteur series of Sight and Sound to give to 4 sign-ups for our popcorn-level membership (which is £6 per month). So, if you want to grab one of these, sign up or upgrade ASAP. As part of the popcorn tier you will also get a physical postcard from either myself or Neil.

The Wiz RECOMMENDS Stalker (1979) As gorgeous as it is deliberate, Andrei Tarkovsky's science fiction masterpiece is a film that shares the same distinction as films like The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Bruxelles: I'm glad I have finally watched it. I enjoyed Stalker. But it's not quite hitting me the way it hits others. Again, Stalker is quite an astonishing looking film. For a film that is considered science fiction, it surely doesn't feel like it. Scenes of the film are in areas that are real, feel realistic, but have a tinge to it that feels foreign. That distinctness Stalker creates gives the film an incredibly uneasy feeling that permeates throughout the entire film. This is also true about Tarkovsky's direction style. The director uses a very slow, pointed means of creating ambience, mood and tension throughout. As the three men go through "The Zone," the film has an unnerving way to make you feel uncomfortable. But honestly, this direction is also why the film leaves me not as in love with the film as most are. As much as I do appreciate the deliberateness of the way the film runs, it does seem to go overboard. At a near 3 hour film, the fact that the average cut of a camera shot is nearly a minute is exasperating at times. Most times, the slow pace adds tension. Others, it confuses. But sometimes, it just leads to tedium. It's why I would have to say that if you are going to watch Stalker, make sure you are well awake for the 3 hour duration. Personally, as much as I was fascinated by the film, I did have to stop twice to get something to drink and wake myself up to finish the film. But Stalker is just one of those films that if you consider yourself a film lover, you must see it. Though I'm not as enamored with the film as some are, it still is a film I'm glad I finally experienced.

This week, after a 40th anniversary sequel went straight to Netflix, we're winding it back to a 23-year-old Eddie Murphy's breakout smash as a capital-M Movie Star. It's 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, and starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser. This one comes from J Mo's collection as it's a movie he's strangely never seen before, having been burned by other overhyped Murphy comedies of the 80s? Is this one worthy of the hype? We'll find out together, but if you've seen it I think you know. Plus: Hayley's watched Axel F. to see where this franchise is at after 40 years, while Justin's staying hydrated in the heat. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to this discussion, Beverly Hills Cop is currently streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+ in Canada at the time of publication. We're back next week to tee up Deadpool & Wolverine by watching Hugh Jackman's previous collaboration with director Shawn Levy: a silly sci-fi rock-em sock-em robot boxing movie from 2011 called Real Steel, with Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and free with ads on the CTV app. And of course, we'll close out the month of July by inducting Twister into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Having amassed more than 100 episodes in its run, PACCTS' sixth season will focus its sights on “the greatest films of all time” (both in the US and internationally), as assembled by the British Film Institute's 2022 Sight and Sound Poll of industry critics. Corey will be choosing American films from the list, and Paul will be choosing international ones.  Our goal is to examine the films that are considered great, and why that may be the case.   For this episode, Paul jumped right to the head of the class: the number one film on the list, Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). Never are Paul and Corey ones to give spoiler warnings, but due to the experiential nature of how this film communicates with the viewer, they highly recommend that listeners watch it before listening to the episode. Jeanne Dielman follows three days in the life of a widow who lives with and dotes upon her teenage son. We watch her disciplined schedule of cooking, cleaning, running errands, and engaging in sex work slowly...falter. Paul and Corey discuss the topics of slow cinema, Chantal Akerman and Delphine Seyrig's lives and politics, feminism, reproductive labor, and why this film may have "dethroned" Citizen Kane from the number one slot on the list. A great discussion. Enjoy!

Musician Owen Ashworth (Advance Base) joins our ongoing "Alone for the Holidays" series with a discussion of JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES starring Delphine Seyrig. At the age of 25, Chantal Akerman wrote and directed this slow-burning Belgian drama depicting the daily chores of a widowed mother in exacting detail. Through a series of static long takes, we become accustomed to Jeanne Dielman's well-worn pattern of cooking, cleaning, caretaking, and sex work- until the pattern breaks down and her behavior grows increasingly erratic. When first screened at Cannes in 1975, JEANNE DIELMAN was met with a mixed reception, but subsequent re-evaluation deemed it a masterpiece of slow cinema. In the 2022 Sight and Sound poll, JEANNE DIELMAN was voted to be the greatest film of all time by critics, and is but one film of many in Akerman's body of work to grow in esteem since her 2015 death. Join us as we try to figure out the deal with DIELMAN, taking a few diversions into Aki Kaurismäki, Cold Mountain, Playtime, Afire, famous filming locations, housecleaning, and much, much more! And thus the people who started this podcast to review the AFI's Top 100 Lists have now made a point of talking about the Sight & Sound list. S&S critics ranked Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles in the #1 spot last December, which is the main reason we committed 200 minutes to watch it...let alone decided to review it. Ryan went on a passionate rant about their controversial Top 100, which led to a pretty heated debate about the merits of this lugubrious motion picture and other "women who suffer" films. Not that Jeanne Dielman doesn't find a way to draw you in. Chantal Akerman's feminist look at a widowed mother who lives a dull, repetitive life with her son is Ozu-like in its shot compositions, the unmoving camera and the (very) long takes. We watch process---do we ever---and not much happens as we see Delphine Seyrig go about her routine...until her entire world is rocked. And what causes it to be rocked? Invest a solid hour in our review of an acclaimed example of "slow cinema" in this 531st Have You Ever Seen podcast. A follow-up thought: a problem with the Sight & Sound list that wasn't quite put into clear words in this review is that Ryan just doesn't think a lot of the movies they honoured are, well, good enough. To like them or get some meaning out of films that weren't made by or for a straight, white male is very valid, but for enough people to feel so strongly as to put them on their own Top 10 is a mind-boggler. Also, is Jeanne Dielman rewatchable? That's something we didn't get into. Is this a movie you want to see again and again? Amy & Paul peel the layers of Chantal Akerman's minimalist homebound masterwork Jeanne Dielman! They praise the way Akerman trains her audience to pay attention to tiny details, debate whether the controversial ending was necessary, and ask what the film's recent ascendancy to the top of Sight & Sound's greatest films list says about how we live today. It's the LAST Casual Friday of 2022! The MR Crew are doing a clips-and-calls show before the holidays, and are also joined by Matthew Film Guy (@langdonboom)to discuss the recent Sight & Sound poll! First, Sam, and Emma run through updates on the final report from the January 6th committee, NY Gov Hochul fitting perfectly into the Cuomo mold, Sam Bankman-Fried paying off his $250 million bond in fiat currency, and Congressman-elect George Santos' crumbling resume, before diving into the $1.7 trillion spending bill making it through the Senate and House, revamping the GOP leadership debate (and perhaps bringing Steve Scalise into the fold). Then, they take calls with Jay from New Haven on CT's solar energy policy, Aaron from Madison on fighting back against the Independent State Legislature Theory, and Amy from San Francisco on QAnon Anonymous' deep dive into Tusli Gabbard's cult. Then, they're joined by Matthew Film Guy as he dives right into the drama surrounding Sight & Sound's recent “Greatest Films of All Time” poll where Citizen Kane and Vertigo were finally overtaken for the #1 spot by a WOMAN-DIRECTED movie “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels.” They walk through the anti-woke backlash to this result, as Matthew dives into the difference between an active culture war and the democratization of a poll, with Sight & Sound expanding the number of voters beyond a couple of hundred for the first time in their history, before launching into the beauty and vision of Chantal Akerman's boundary-pushing work, its long-term rise into mainstream discourse, and the importance of creating art with sensitive visions of life. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch AOC tackle the USPS deal and their shift toward Electric Vehicles being undermined by Louis DeJoy putting a scab facility at the center of the production, Drew from Portland Oregon calls in to discuss DeSantis' alternate health agency and the impact it could have on the Right's war on trans care, and John from San Antonio walks through the massive boom in union support that we've seen in 2022. They also dive deeper into Kathy Hochul's nomination of a severely conservative judge to New York's Chief Justice position, and Matt Taibbi's response to critiques (such as Matt Taibbi from a year ago) of him doing PR for a billionaire. Revis from the Twin Cities reveals a Sam Seder cameo in the Magic Schoolbus, Candace Owens has some thoughts on the Confederate Flag, and Charlie from Washington explores how to push your state to become a safe space for trans folks escaping persecution, plus, your calls and IMs!
