Refusing to comply with the NBA's Covid vaccine mandate cost over $100 million and a four-year contract extension, Brooklyn Nets' point guard Kyrie Irving explained Monday. “I gave up four years, $100-and-something million deciding to be unvaccinated and that was the decision,” Irving told reporters during the Nets' media day, adding he had to come to terms with the gravity of his decision. “[Get this] contract, get vaccinated or be unvaccinated and there's a level of uncertainty of your future, whether you're going to be in this league, whether you're going to be on this team, so I had to deal with that real-life circumstance of losing my job for this decision.” Irving was sidelined by his team during home games throughout the 2021 season after famously refusing to adhere to New York City's experimental mRNA jab mandate. As a result, his contract has remained up in the air, and he says he feels he's being given “an ultimatum” between getting the jab and being able to play. “We were supposed to have all that figured out before training camp last year,” he told reporters. “And it just didn't happen because of the status of me being vaccinated, unvaccinated. So, I understood their point and I just had to live with it. It was a tough pill to swallow, honestly.” “On a serious note, I felt like I was forced with an ultimatum of whether or not I had a contract or not, whether or not I could be on the team or be around the team, whether or not I was vaccinated. So, tough conversations again that were had,” he said. In a statement to ESPN, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks disputed Irving's view, saying, “There's no ultimatum being given here… Again, it goes back to you want people who are reliable, people who are here, and accountable. All of us: staff, players, coaches, you name it. It's not giving somebody an ultimatum to get a vaccine. That's a completely personal choice. I stand by Kyrie. I think if he wants, he's made that choice. That's his prerogative completely.” Irving added his unpopular decision “came to be a stigma within my career,” but that he wasn't simply intending to be a sacrificial lamb for the anti-Covid vaccine movement; he just wanted to stand for something bigger than himself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/world-voices/support

On Christmas Eve, the guys dive into the Patriots' bad performance in Indy, what it means for their prospects the rest of the year, and then dive into the NFL at large, the remaining college bowl games, and the one positive of the NBA's COVID issues: the return of some old favorites like Joe Johnson, IT, Lance Stephenson, and more. For Toss Up, it's the start of “best and worst of” season as the guys look back on the year that was. This week, they debate the best season of television from 2021. Last but not least, everyone picks the Loser of the Week.

Lakers Lose Westbrook & Bradley Due To Health and Safety Protocols, Lakers Sign Isaiah Thomas Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas had 42 points in his G League debut on Wednesday, and that performance reportedly was enough to impress the Los Angeles Lakers. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Thomas signed a 10-day contract with Los Angeles on Thursday. Thomas was last in the NBA near the end of last season, playing three games for the New Orleans Pelicans in the month of April. After he was unable to land with another team through the first two months of this season, Thomas signed a G League deal with the Grand Rapids Gold, the affiliate of the Denver Nuggets. Thomas has played for eight teams during his 11-year career. This will be his second run with the Lakers after he was traded to Los Angeles midway through the 2017-18 season. Thomas was limited to 17 games during his first stint with the team because of hip surgery. Los Angeles Lakers guards Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley have entered the NBA's COVID-19 protocols, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin. Westbrook and Bradley reportedly become the latest Laker to enter protocols this week. Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard and Malik Monk were all placed in protocols earlier this week. Of note, Los Angeles bolstered its backcourt depth by signing two-time NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas to a 10-day contract on Thursday, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. The Lakers currently sit sixth in the Western Conference at 16-13. This latest development involving Westbrook is particularly important because of how much time LeBron James missed because of an abdominal strain. Head coach Frank Vogel hasn't had his three best players all healthy for very much of the season, which is tough when one of the three hasn't built on-court chemistry with the other two. So Z Nation, what did you think about the Lakers signing IT and how to you feel about the Lakers chances moving forward without Westbrook, Avery, Dwight, THT, and Monk due to COVID???? In today's DEEP DIVE: We'll look at the complex and worsening situation along our southern border, and explore a number of facets of what continues to be a white-hot divisive issue with very human implications… And in COURAGE OR CRINGE: Kareem's COVID Sky-Hook, Washington Spirit Shakeup, and the James Bond brouhaha! Is a legendary basketball player's perspective on the unvaccinated a clarion call to bring irresponsible athletes to account? Or is it a callous criticism full of invective and generalities that makes the situation worse? Is the unfolding drama of a National Womens Soccer League team a signal of a “conscious consumer era” where constituents have more power to shape the trajectory of companies? Or is it simply a PR and social media moment highlighting nothing more than a series of unfortunate events? And finally… Are the calls for a female or gay person to play an iconic MALE movie character a thoughtful conversation during a moment of franchise transition, or are they a virtue signal that looks to create tension and controversy where none should exist? Monty & Jake are talking Utah Jazz basketball, and the controversy surrounding Donovan Mitchell's injured ankle. The Utah Jazz held Donovan Mitchell out of their first round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, even though Donovan Mitchell told the Utah Jazz he was ready to play and said in his media session that he was going to play. Did the controversy impact the outcome of game 1? Did the Utah Jazz mishandle the situation with Donovan Mitchell? What do Utah Jazz fans expect from Donovan Mitchell in Game 2 vs the Memphis Grizzlies? How many minutes should Donovan Mitchell play? Should the Utah Jazz count on Donovan Mitchell to drop 20 points? 30 points? The NBA Playoffs are back tonight with two big games for Los Angeles, the Lakers and the Clippers! Is it a must win for both teams? Can the Clippers go down 0-2 to the Dallas Mavericks and expect to win the series? Are the Los Angeles Lakers in a must win situation in Phoneix against the Suns? Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James went to a party, outside, in violation of the NBA COVID Protocols and was not suspended or put in to the NBA's COVID protocols, was he given special treatment? The NBA Explained ...Monty & Jake have questions!
The Lakers opened their playoffs with a 99-90 loss in Game 1 to the Phoenix Suns in the desert. In ways that were predictable (poor offensive flow and outside shooting) and out of character (bad transition D, rebounding), the Lakers' performance was extremely disappointing. From top to nearly bottom (Alex Caruso performed well on balance), everyone needs to step up more in Game 2. But nobody more so than Anthony Davis, whose sluggish outing had fans complaining online about him... but even more about Andre Drummond. What was the cause behind AD's lackluster showing? And was this Game 1 loss different than Game 1 losses in the first two rounds of the 2020 playoffs? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys react to the game. What was bad that felt like specific to this game, and what felt like a continuation of season-long issues? And how blatantly would LeBron James have needed to violate the NBA's Covid protocols to have actually been suspended? SEGMENT 2: What is (and isn't) the correlation between Drummond's presence on the floor and Davis' ineffectiveness? How much is the byproduct of Davis not playing the five and how much is the byproduct of his own decisions on the floor? SEGMENT 3: The Lakers dropped Game 1's against Portland and Houston during last season, then proceeded to win the next four games of both series. Did this loss feel reminiscent of those? Monty & Jake are talking Utah Jazz Basketball! The Utah Jazz blowout the Houston Rockets, and they did it without Donovan Mitchell. The guys talk about the importance of this game, no matter how bad the Rockets are, to the Utah Jazz and why Clarkson, Ingles, and Conley have to be huge with Donovan Mitchell out of the lineup. LeBron James fired off a tweet after Columbus Ohio Police shot and killed a knife wielding suspect, who was a black, teenage, girl who was involved in a brawl on her driveway. LeBron James threatened the Police Officer who shot the girl on Twitter, even after body cam footage was released that appears to vindicate the actions of the Police Officer. LeBron James deleted the tweet, saying" it was being used to create more hate". Monty says LeBron James owes this officer and the community an apology. The LA Lakers are getting Anthony Davis back tonight in Dallas against the Mavs. Can Anthony Davis resurrect the Los Angeles Lakers dominance in the NBA Western Conference? The Houston Rockets had an embarrassing and dangerous situation outside of a strip club in Miami. Rockets Guard Sterling Brown was severely beaten outside a Miami, Florida strip club after the Rockets played the Heat on Sunday Night. Lastly, they dig into where the Raptors' defense let them down against a red-hot Hawks team, and address Siakam's surprisingly low usage late in the game -- which is a bit of a recurring trend at this point.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!cbdMdVisit cbdMD.com to receive 20% OFF your next order when you use the promo code NBA at checkout.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
