DDK Pod Episode 9 – Humane Technology. This week we discuss the efforts of one Tristan Harris, former design ethicist at Google and now President and a Co-Founder of the Center for Humane Technology, to better educate all of us about the extent to which technology is being used to manipulate our lives. This is often happening without our knowledge, but recent scandals such as the one which embroiled Cambridge Analytica, and the efforts of organisations such as Tristan's, are starting to make people more aware of the sorts of techniques we are all being targeted by. We provide our take on what is fast becoming a major issue for our time. Also covered is our pick of the IT industry news and a few recommendations for our listeners. No questionable share dealing this week, but we do recommend some booze! It gives us a chance to talk about how much things have changed since the days when Dawkins, Hitchens, and Harris roamed the earth. Then, we review The Comey Rule (NowTV/Sky/Showcase), based on the memoir of former FBI Director James Comey (Jeff Daniels), who was fired by Donald Trump (Brendan Gleeson). We judge whether Brendan Gleeson gets Trump right, and how to be a good man in a bad time.Timestamps00:00-07:45 - Intro and News07:56-28:15 - Say Your Prayers28:30-end - The Comey RuleShownotes- Glen Scrivener - "Reset" Interviews
DDK Pod Episode 3 – Continuing the topic of algorithms and their use in the modern world from the previous episode, we discuss ‘Hello World: How to be Human in the Age of the Machine' by Hannah Fry. She poses several thought-provoking questions in this book which we discuss: Should there be greater governance, legislation and transparency around the use of algorithms? Are ethical considerations always taken into account when developing new algorithms? How do we avoid passing or own biases on to the machines? The FBI destroys the Liberty Dollar! Is the FBI protecting the Federal Reserve? On November 14, 2007, the FBI confiscated the silver, gold, and other assets of NORFED, the organization that was producing an alternative type of money known as the Liberty Dollar. (Here is a news article) The Liberty Dollar organization supports Ron Paul for president, and they had just started to ship coins with his image on it (here is a news article about it): Is Ron Paul a hero for America? Is the Liberty Dollar the solution to the Federal Reserve problem? Is the FBI trying to stop Ron Paul because he will end the war in Iraq, eliminate the Federal Reserve, and repeal the income tax?
