How many times have you heard the cliche “the children are our future.'' If you consider it seriously, it's actually a profound statement. If we were to truly center children - and the people that raise them - how would our systems, structures and cultures change?  At first blush, childcare seems to only be relevant if you need it for your family, but it's actually foundational to a functioning society. Care for our youngest children enables parents to work and provides children the foundation for achievement as they grow. It's an investment in creating stronger communities. When you look around the world, the idea that children are a collective responsibility shows up in both policy and community norms. Yet, in the United States, this work continues to fall on individuals. What are the cultural agreements we've accepted that hide this collective responsibility? And after witnessing the clashing of homelife and work life during every Zoom call in the pandemic, why haven't our actions kept pace with our awareness?Jessica Sager is a Pahara Fellow and co-founder and CEO of All Our Kin, an organization that supports the people providing the care: early childhood educators. Jessica has seen that by uplifting caregivers, parents and children can thrive. Bernadette Ngho is a university professor turned early childhood educator. After a year at home with her newborn sons, she began considering going back to work. However, she struggled to find the type of care she was seeking for her boys. In response, she created the space herself and now owns and operates a family child care program called Trusted Care in West Haven, CT.  On this episode of LIMINAL, we are in conversation with Jessica and Bernadette on questions of what caregiving means to our culture and why we aren't paying enough attention.

And I was telling him how successful I was how I had really nice clothes and suspenders and I had a new car and took great vacations. I owned a house before I was 25. I kind of the world by the tail, but my grandfather was a farmer and a Presbyterian minister and any money that he ever made, he gave away. Because he thought other people needed it more. In this episode she gives us an update, discussing what's happened since we last talked, and why she is even more excited & passionate than ever about this unique opportunity. Speaking from personal experience, having left a wall street career to start this project, Adriana knows that the gaps in the long term systems designed to support our loved ones after we are gone are only widening as individuals with IDD & Autism approach "the cliff" at age 21 and the services that once supported them start to fall away. She's committed to addressing this crisis due to lack of funding and constantly changing government requirements and NGOH is committed to providing long term care that integrates work therapy, training for employment, community engagement, recreation, and more to allowing for a quality of life for not only Nicky, but others like Nicky. Adriana wants to know, like so many of us that care for those affected by IDD & Autism, that after we die, our loved ones who are valuable individuals and deserve access to programs and opportunities that give them a chance to work, have community, and that support their needs over the course of their entire lifetime. She details why NGOH is unique, with a two corporation model combining a charity created to build safe, permanent homes for IDD & Autism affected adults & provide support services for their families with a Type B corp creating enduring business enterprises that provide funds to support the charity. Adriana and her team are well on their way to making this project a reality and have events already on the calendar in August with an IDD/Autism get together in NYC on 8/17 and an IDD/Autism parent/caregiver/family support group phone call on 8/20 to give opportunities to connect, share our stories, struggles and feel less alone. Adriana is a true visionary and has assembled a team of like-minded individuals, with financial & investment expertise, healthcare information management experience, nutrition and therapy expertise, and more to ensure the success of this revolutionary new model.
