Requests for proposals (RFPs) to redevelop the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town are expected to go out next year, says Western Cape government Department of Health and Wellness communication deputy director Mark van der Heever. "This megaproject aims to improve health infrastructure for the people of the Western Cape by replacing the current inefficient and ageing Tygerberg Hospital - which has become increasingly costly to maintain - with two modern, efficient facilities equipped with 21st century technology." Tygerberg Hospital is a tertiary hospital located in Parow. The hospital was officially opened in 1976 and is the largest hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest in South Africa. It acts as a teaching hospital, in conjunction with Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The decision to redevelop the hospital was made by the provincial cabinet in 2009 already, at a then estimated cost of R5-billion, excluding equipment. "Due to the size and complexity of the hospital, its redevelopment is classified as a megaproject, and the support of not only provincial, but also national stakeholders is required," says Van der Heever. The feasibility study of the project was approved in November 2022, and is currently "in the procurement stage of the public-private partnership (PPP) cycle", he adds. "This stage involves determining the output requirements to formulate the request for proposals, which is expected to be advertised in 2024. "Should all things go according to plan, the new Central Hospital is expected to be operational by 2031." The new Central Hospital will be a new 893-bed tertiary facility on the Tygerberg Hospital estate, "thereby maintaining the facility's close linkages with higher education institutions for training health professionals and technologists", says Van der Heever. A second facility will be a new 596-bed Regional Hospital, offering Level 1 and 2 services on a site procured for this purpose at Belhar. Tygerberg Hospital will be maintained, and will remain operational until the new Central Hospital and the Belhar Hospital are operational, says Van der Heever.

If you are currently pregnant and feel like you're more sensitive to traumatic stories, you may want to listen to this episode at a later date. However, if you are a midwife, student midwife or care provider, consider Steph's story essential listening because it highlights the importance of woman-centred care - even the power of a simple hand hold - in one of the most traumatic birth experiences. After an induction, Steph experienced a cord prolapse and had an emergency caesarean under general anaesthetic. She talks at length about the spectrum of care she received, the importance of support and debriefing with your birth team and her mental health in postpartum. In episode 300 I interview Gemma who shares her experience of birthing in a small, rural hospital. In her first pregnancy she opted for public obstetric care at a regional hospital in the nearest large town. The day before her scheduled induction she went into spontaneous labour and found comfort in breathing practices, the shower and sitting on the toilet which allowed her to open her hips. She invested in The Birth Class in her second pregnancy and with a greater understanding of the physiology of birth and newfound breathing skills she felt confident to birth at her local rural hospital with midwives. She birthed baby Elsie in the water and returned home six hours later. To download my FREE Hospital Bag Check List click

Special Guest: Derek Ruvalcaba (Hospital Staff, United Regional, Wichita Falls) Topic: COVID-19 Mandates. In response to Gov. Gregg Abbott's Executive Order BANNING Vaccine Mandates by any entity in the state of Texas, United Regional Hospital CEO Phyllis Cowling wrote to the staff to say that "our vaccine requirements ... were designed to comply with existing state and federal laws. We will be working closely with the legal counsel, The Texas Hospital Association (THA), and others to evaluate the Executive Order (as well as any subsequent legislation) ..." This certainly sounds as if the UR team of lawyers will be looking for loopholes in the Executive Orders and/or possible legislation in order to continue the mandates. Addressing this issue is Derek Ruvalcaba, who is an "in studio" guest on the show. Derek has some great insights, as well as suggestions, pertaining to the mandates, the health and safety of the hospital staff, as well as the exemption requests being made by numerous individuals connected with the hospital. Sadly, over 140 trained staff members have already LEFT United Regional over this mandate; the morale of the hospital staff is sagging, and healthcare workers themselves declare that they should have control over their own healthcare as well. - - American Liberty with Bill Lockwood is about the culture of America — not simply about politics. IMA Medical Supply is the most complete medical supplier in the whole south-central Pennsylvania area. Founder Richard Gobin started IMA Medical Supply because he felt very strongly that there was a need for durable medical equipment in the south-central Pennsylvania area. They service all types of equipment, whether the equipment was sold by them or purchased elsewhere. This isn’t a service that was readily available before, and it’s even conveniently located next to the Regional Hospital for customers. Though many of their products are widely sought, supply hosiery and walking aids like rollators are among the most popular. They also offer complete hospital beds and all manner of items needed in the sickroom. Whether you need canes, crutches, wheelchairs, or stand-up motorized recliner chairs, IMA has it. They don’t just offer items for the elderly—they cater to the young as well. Injured student-athletes frequently visit IMA to get what they need. “IMA Medical Supply has turned customer service into a true art form.” People often ask if their services are covered under insurance or Medicare. They have an on-staff expert who does her best to keep each client or their family updated regarding what is and is not covered by insurance. If someone has an issue with a piece of equipment, IMA also has a service technician that will come out and fix the item for you. IMA is there for the sole purpose of providing critical services not just to patients, but also to their families. They always look to understand your needs and take care of you. Frequently, many of their customers are in the dark about where to turn if they have medical needs, so Richard is very proud that his company has turned customer service into a true art form. If you’d like to learn more about the wide range of services and products offered by IMA Medical supply, visit their website at www.IMAMedicalSupply.com In the meantime, if you know of a business that deserves a moment in our Brand Ambassador spotlight, reach out and let us know!

Many other significant awards have followed."(http://bit.ly/31zKK0E). I thoroughly enjoyed my discussion with Steve and have more audio that will be included in future episodes. He discusses his entry into the healthcare industry after some words from his grandfather; "I was really quite successful in what I was doing in it. And I visited my 90 some year old grandfather. And I was telling him how successful I was how I had really nice clothes and suspenders and I had a new car and took great vacations. I owned a house before I was 25. I kind of the world by the tail, but my grandfather was a farmer and a Presbyterian minister and any money that he ever made, he gave away. Because he thought other people needed it more. And all of my efforts to impress him. Were all they did is turned him off. " He talks more about how he went from working in a business/IT setting to the healthcare industry and how this led to his success questioning the reasoning of doing things the same way because that's the way they've always been done. He is continually thinking outside the box and looking for ways to innovate, improve collaboratively with his staff which has led to a complete turnaround for Ellenville Regional Hospital."Under Mr. Kelley’s leadership, ERH has been recognized with 4 national awards from HRSA for patient safety and medication safety, has been recognized by the National Rural Health Association as one of the top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the country for Quality, and has been a leader in New York State in the areas of quality measurement and rural health"He also serves as a board member for Nicky's Gardens of Hope, an innovative program designated as is the first Financially and Environmentally sustainable resident community solution designed to provide a holistic life for Adults with Autism and IDD (Intellectually Developmentally Disabled).
