Peter and Nathan watched this movie so you don't have to! It's time for a deep cut... We're talking about the 1970 film version of Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane's very strange musical, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever – a show about a psychiatrist with terrible boundaries. We talk about: ESP: Is there a meaningful distinction between extrasensory perception and Christian conceptions of spirituality and prayer? Reincarnation: We talk about the case of Bridey Murphy, the 19th-century Irishwoman who was purportedly reincarnated as a 20th century American housewife. What are we supposed to believe about the afterlife? Grief: So many conversations about the afterlife happen in the context of death & grief. Does profound grief open us up to alternate conceptions of the universe in a way that can be helpful – or is that simply our emotions talking? Clothes: Always the clothes. The Cecil Beaton gowns! The turbans! Be still, our hearts! You'll hear: Yves Montand, Barbra Streisand and the cast of the film singing "Come Back To Me," "Love With All The Trimmings" and "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" as well as the Peddlers' version of the film's title song. An award winning actor, director, writer and producer, Jay James-Moody has collaborated with an impressive range of Australia's arts organisations, from Opera Australia to the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, and the Sydney Theatre Company to the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, plus New Mardi Gras, to name only a few. A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter's past, present, and future has always embodied music. From church Boy choirs at the age of six to the American Boy choir school in Princeton to the University of North Texas on a vocal jazz scholarship, Walter has become a pioneer of improvisation and electronic innovations in the world of jazz. His recording career spans 20 years and his purist progressive approach to jazz music has been recognized worldwide. After extended studies in Amsterdam with Jazz vocal Icon, Deborah Brown, Walter returned to the U.S. and embedded himself in the New York Jazz scene. It was in New York, surrounded by visionaries of jazz, where he began to organically develop his liberated, vibrant style that turned him from straight-ahead to progressive jazz singing. Walter's recordings include, "Dressed in a Song", “Sirens in the C-House,” “Clear Day,” “Dedicated to You,” “2Bass, a Face and a Little Skin,” “Live in Portugal,” “Live at the 55 Bar,” “One Step Away,” and Guest appearances on over 100 recordings. The latest album, released on February 7, 2020, testifies to his personal progression as an evolving artisan and provides an intimate, inventive collection of standards and originals. “Dressed in a Song,” produced by Walter and Grammy-winning producer and A&R executive Al Pryor, features piano and vocal duets and trios with veterans and up-and-comers alike, including Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marc Cary, Taylor Eigsti, Julius Rodriguez, Ben Wolfe, Obed Calvaire, and Becca Stevens. Over the decades, Walter has performed as a featured artist at numerous American jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America as well as over 80 tours in Russia. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. He has shared the stage with legendary artists, ranging from Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Ben Monder, Sean Jones, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Seamus Blake, Igor Butman, Nasheet Waits, Craig Handy, Boris Kozlov, Robin Eubanks, Eric Revis, Billy Drummond, Christian McBride, Adam Nussbaum. Walter currently resides in New York and teaches privately and abroad at The Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Holland, The Jazz and Music School in St. Petersburg, and the Music Wave School in Moscow. © 2022 Mack Avenue Records Oscar Peterson – piano Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen – bass Louis Hayes – drums Recorded at Zurich Kongresshaus – Zurich, Switzerland • November 24, 1971 by Radio Zurich ℗ 2022 SRF Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen under exclusive worldwide license from Two Lions Records to Mack Avenue Records II, LLC. #bebop #swing --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message
A long, long time ago, there was this Barbara Streisand musical about past lives, psychic powers and runaway plant growth. It had the clunky title ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER, and we (and no one else for the last four decades) watched it! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela is all in on VIOLENT NIGHT. Sean saw AVA2AR again, also likes TILL. Robin loved THE WOMAN KING and has a story about DUAL.

Today, I am so happy to announce my interview with a Broadway legend I've been wanting to talk to since I started this podcast—Tony winner Hal Linden. Having recently completed a successful run in Two Jews Talking, Hal joins us today to tell many of the stories of his long career, including: the role that George Abbott let him pick, how he became a non-traditional Sid Sorokin in a non-traditional revival of The Pajama Game, the Alan Jay Lerner musical he turned down, why he's never played Tevye, the promise Lucille Ball made to him, a lesson from Judy Holliday about upstaging, why The Rothschilds is a problematic show, the dialogue he wrote for The Education of H*Y*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N, why Louis Jourdan was not right for On a Clear Day, plus stories about Michael Kidd, Sheldon Harnick, Sam Mendes, Ossie Davis, and more. You won't want to miss this inside view into a bygone era of Broadway.

There's no better way to send off 2021 than by listening to Part 2 of my episode with amazing choreographer JoAnn M. Hunter. Tune in today for a revealing and fascinating conversation about her choreography career, which includes such shows as School of Rock, Disaster, On a Clear Day, and more. Stories and insights abound: what she looks for in auditions, why it's hard to cast child actors, preparing the Tonys number for Spring Awakening, how she cast Prince Charming in Cinderella, why she never writes anything down, why Disaster didn't find as much success as it could have, having a meeting with Jerry Lewis, what it's like collaborating with Barry Manilow, and so much more.
So bad song and silly kid's story aside, today feels like the opposite of yesterday. Yesterday my calendar was over-filled, today's is nearly blank. Trying to get the balance right... also noticed that, even though I have a 4-month work plan available to me, none of that made it into my daily process, so it "looks like" I have nothing to do, even though I have it all pretty well defined. That's just a failure of tools, and I'm fixing that this week. I'm also adding a time block called "Deal with Crap time", where I can spend a half-hour on minor tasks and emails for other people who I need to service once in a while. If anyone needs me, I'll be dealing with crap at 10:30 M-F. On the fun side, I'm starting to see progress in my back-office as I feed the top of my cold outreach funnel and see KPIs moving a bit. Needs tweaking but now its starting to feel like the machine I need it to be. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/davey-gets-rich/message

Hello everyone! We had a not-so-brief hiatus, but are back and ready to continue our Barbra Streisand movie musical season with her third movie musical, "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." Somehow, this movie manages to be just as extra as the previous two with a fraction of the budget because of the costumes, the special effects, and well, Ms. Streisand herself! Join Alex and Daisha as they unravel the deeper message (in their opinion) behind this strange yet endearing musical. Mike Jeffers and special guest vocalist Jd Walter talking about his new recording "Dressed in a Song" where he performs with 6 of his favorite piano players and mixture of original compositions and well known songs. JD also discusses how he developed his sound and improvisational style at the UNT College of Music and studying with Deborah Brown. Thanks to the Epiphany Center for the Arts. About JD Walter A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter’s past, present, and future has always embodied music. Walter’s recordings include, "Dressed in a Song", “Sirens in the C-House,” “Clear Day,” “Dedicated to You,” “2Bass, a Face and a Little Skin,” “Live in Portugal,” “Live at the 55 Bar,” “One Step Away,” and Guest appearances on over 100 recordings. While recording his most recent album, “Dressed in a Song,” a life-threatening health scare and subsequent heart and vocal cord surgeries kept Walter out of the studio and off the road for several years. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy’s Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. He has shared the stage with legendary artists, ranging from Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Ben Monder, Sean Jones, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Seamus Blake, Igor Butman, Nasheet Waits, Craig Handy, Boris Kozlov, Robin Eubanks, Eric Revis, Billy Drummond, Christian McBride, Adam Nussbaum. Walter currently resides in New York and teaches privately and abroad at The Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Holland, The Jazz and Music School in St. Petersburg, and the Music Wave School in Moscow.
I want to share with you a Master Class I had with my private group for Synced Program members. My movement series is based on the four phases of a woman´s menstrual cycle and the four phases of the moon, which is meant for women who are either pregnant or no longer have a menstrual cycle. The Synced Program is a transition to the Synced Academy which is going to be focused on teaching women all the aspects of their bodies that they should have known from a very early age. We are in a time in history when we need to start questioning everything and begin to tap into what our bodies are really communicating to us to create a level of strength and internal resiliency to be able to stay in rhythm and connection to ourselves. We are all currently inundated with fear and anxiety as a result of the news and people’s opinions and agendas. My goal is to teach you how to manage that level of stress and to learn how to listen to the signs that your body is giving you. These are the main topics of this awesome master class. ● Illnesses are symptoms of a bigger issue, not the root cause. ● The story of your eggs from the uterus until adult life. ● The truth about ovulation, your period and why it is not only about getting pregnant ● The four phases of your cycle and how your energy is affected by them. ● Learn to be a ninja managing your time in accordance with your cycle phases. ● Stress is either real or imaginary. ● Learn to adapt your diet to your cycle phases. ● Start tracking your cycle! ● DUTCH test. ● Cortisol is a longer-term hormone. ● Pay attention to your body responses to the changes in your diet. ● What dairy does to your system. ● Understand histamine and how it is contained in food. ● Move your body every day, exercise according to your menstrual phases. ● Why you need to be in bed by 10 pm. ● Seed cycling. ● How to use adaptogens. ● Supplements, tinctures, and homeopathic remedies. ● The color of your bleed matters. ● Signs of low progesterone. I hope you learn some of the crucial information about your cycle you should have been taught when you were a child. It is never too late to learn more about your body and to discover the root causes of those symptoms and signs you have been receiving from it. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! Today, on American TV Icons, Alikona Bradford interviews, we feature longtime veteran Linda Lavin. Born in Portland, Maine to a musically-inclined family (her mother was once an opera singer) and on stage from the age of 5, singer/actress Linda Lavin graduated from The College of William and Mary with a theatre degree. She pounded the New York pavements in the early 1960s searching for work following some stock roles in New Jersey, and gradually made a dent within the New York musical comedy scene with roles in "Oh, Kay!" (1960), "A Family Affair," (1962), "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" (1966) (her standout number was "You've Got Possibilities") and "On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever" (1966). She also won kudos for her straight acting roles in "Little Murders" (1969 Drama Desk award) and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" (1969 Tony nomination). A one-time member of Paul Sills' Compass Players comedy troupe back in the late 1950s, she served as a replacement in Sills' "Story Theatre" Broadway production in 1971. Television beckoned in the 1970s and utilized her singing talents in a small-screen version of Damn Yankees! (1967) starring Phil Silvers and Lee Remick. After a one-season false start as Detective Janice Wentworth on the sitcom Barney Miller (1975), it did not take long for the talented lady to become a household name in another. As the titular waitress/mother in the sitcom Alice (1976), based on the award-winning film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) starring Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, Lavin won deserved stardom. During the nine seasons (1976-1985) the show was on the air, she nabbed two Golden Globe awards and an Emmy nomination. Ever the singer, she even warbled "There's a New Girl in Town" over the opening credits of the show to the delight of her fans. Following this success, Linda lavished her attentions once again on the stage. She earned renewed respect, in addition to several critic's awards, for her diversified Broadway work in "Broadway Bound" (1987 Tony award), "Death Defying Acts" (1995 Obie award), "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1998 Tony nomination: as the high-strung Mrs. Van Daan) and "Tales of the Allergist Wife" (2000 Tony nomination). More recently, she appeared in Carol Burnett's autobiographical play "Hollywood Arms" (2002) portraying Burnett's grandmother. The piece was co-written by Burnett's late daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Linda received excellent reviews the first time around for her stage work in "Collected Stories" (2000). She later appeared in a PBS-TV version of Collected Stories (2002) and in 2010 revived it on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for her efforts. She has also occasionally directed for the stage. Linda was married and divorced twice to actors -- Ron Leibman and Kip Niven -- and in 2005 married her third husband, actor Steve Bakunas, who is also an artist and musician. Since her "Alice" heyday, the actress has again found series work, albeit the short-lived Room for Two (1992) and Conrad Bloom (1998). She has also been seen in penetrating guest parts on such established series as "The Sopranos", "Law & Order" and "The O.C." (recurring). The hot, nasty, sweaty production that was 2012's Into the Woods in Central Park made way for this special Josh Swallows Broadway reunion episode as Josh hosts his former cast mates Jessie Mueller, Chip Zien, Sarah Stiles, and Gideon Glick. Here are some of our favorite screenshots from Clear Day: In our Retro Voltron segment, Greg reviews another episode that celebrated a holiday in the original series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the 67th episode, Doom Girls on the Prowl. Here is a summary of that episode and some screenshots: Haggar tries to send a baby Ro-beast after Queen Merla, but Merla's pet buzzard catches it. Haggar apologizes, and offers to help Merla conquer Arus. Meanwhile, on Arus, there is a parade taking place honoring the planet's leaders. Merla's forces attack. Keith and Allura try to get the villagers to safety, while Lance, Hunk, and Pidge race to get to their lions. In protecting the villagers, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge get zapped with a freeze ray, and their lions are sent over a cliff, and to the bottom of a canyon. After getting the villagers to the castle, Haggar makes her baby Ro-beast turn into a full sized one, and sicks it on the castle. With the other three frozen, Keith and Allura have to face the monster by themselves. At the end, all of the Voltron Force has statues made of them by the kids they had saved earlier in the episode, and King Alfor's ghost shows his approval of Keith. As Always, Thanks for Listening! Let's Voltron!!

One of those lives was that of my son Guy Alexander Kelly. He was just 20 years of age. This is the story of the loss of that one, precious life, shared by a father who loved his son and who wishes he knew then what he does now about Suicide. On Australia Day 2007 I felt on top of the world. I was, in fact, on a ski slope high in the French Alps with my wife Susie and our youngest son Steele. It was a breathtakingly beautiful day. The sky was the deepest blue, framed by the crisp white snow on the mountain peaks. I thought that I could see for a thousand miles. I felt a very fortunate man. I remember wanting to share the moment with our oldest son Guy. Guy had chosen not to come on holiday with us on the family holiday. Susie and I were a little disappointed but understood that he was now a young man moving towards independence, with his own life to lead. Guy had experienced several, quite challenging years as he moved from adolescent to adult and had at times developed recurring bouts of depression. However, he had previously been treated by a psychologist, was currently under medication, which seemed to be working effectively, and he appeared to be coping well with his illness. Guy had a job he loved and healthy social network and had recently moved into a shared house with two good friends. We took comfort knowing that he had his whole life ahead of him. Plenty of time in the future for him to travel with his friends and experience the world. While not really expecting any success, given our location on top of a mountain a half a world a way from home, we telephoned Guy on his mobile back in Perth. To our surprise we made a connection and were thrilled when he answered. I don’t recall much of the conversation. I expect there was a lot of gushing from us about how wonderful the holiday had been and how we were looking forward to seeing him when we arrived home in a few days time. I remember that Guy was really pleased to hear from us, if somewhat bemused by our complaints about the freezing temperature, as it was the middle of a hot Summer in Perth. It was so lovely to hear his voice again but, as we said our goodbyes, both Susie and I felt a little uneasy. Guy had said that he wanted to meet us at the Airport in Perth, which was nice, but a little out of character and there seemed to be an unusual intensity in his voice. A week later we arrived back in Perth. Guy met us at the airport, as planned, collected our bags and drove us home. After patiently listening as we shared our travel adventures and rolling his eyes in mock exasperation at our typical tourist stories, Guy quietly said “.I don’t think my medication is working any more…I’m not doing ok. I think I need to move back home”. This stopped us in our tracks. We were obviously concerned and I recall that we said something along the lines of ‘this always being your home and of course you can move back in”. We then sat together over a cup of tea discussing how he was feeling and how we could help. We all agreed that we should arrange an appointment as soon as possible with his GP and obtain an urgent ...

Month Upon a Time, Episode #4 (September): The last time she made a guest appearance on this podcast, Alysha Umphress was just getting her feet wet in the New York talent pool. Now, five years later, she is positively drenched!First came her Off Broadway debut understudying the two female roles in the Bill Finn revue, Make Me a Song. Then followed a very happy run, first at Berkeley Rep and then on Broadway, in Green Day's American Idiot (Check out her hot duet from the cast recording: "Too Much Too Soon".)Along the way, she's performed in countless cabaret shows - here are youtube videos of her definitive performances of two of my songs "Celebrate" and "I Just Wanna Have Fun" in concert. Happily, one of her solo concerts was preserved with a live recording, which you can purchase from her outrageously not-up-to-date website: Alysha Umphress - Live at the Laurie Beechman. This coming season, you'll be able to catch her on Broadway again (!!) in the upcoming revival of On a Clear Day..., as well as on television as a guest star on Showtime's Nurse Jackie. She's on fire!!September inspired a flurry of song ideas, 95% of which were rooted in back-to-school, which made Karen Buerkle's idea stand out that much more: she wrote "That's when the Bennys go home." Not knowing what this cryptic sentence meant, I did a little research, which led me to this website and this Facebook page. (At the time of uploading this episode, the Benny Go Home website was experiencing technical difficulties. Hopefully, it will be live again soon, so you can see what I found.) In a nutshell, a Benny is a summer tourist visiting the Monmouth or Ocean County Jersey shore. While there are several explanations for the origin of the name, the favored one is that it's an acronym for the cities these tourists primarily came from back in the day, namely Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, and New York. The locals frown upon what they perceive to be disrespectful Benny behavior. A grass roots campaign called "Benny Go Home" has evolved, with logos, bumper stickers, and things like these three beach scenes.... Given that I grew up in Monmouth County (in fact, Karen Buerkle played the title role in our community theatre production of Annie Get Your Gun back in the early 80s), I couldn't resist this subject matter for the September song. And since I've been making it a habit of sneaking musical quotes into several of these Month Upon a Time songs, this title offered up a no-brainer. Thanks, Karen! For the record, I think the members of the cast of MTV's Jersey Shore would definitely be considered Bennys. This episode was recorded September 12, 2011.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the actress Brenda Blethyn. Brenda Blethyn is one of our most versatile and talented actresses with film credits that include Secrets and Lies, Little Voice, Saving Grace and, now, Pride and Prejudice and has won a host of awards for her film and stage work. But she fell into acting by default. Born Brenda Bottle, the youngest of nine children, she had no burning desire to take to the stage. She was working as a secretary for British Rail when a friend had to pull out of an amateur-dramatic production and Brenda stood in as a favour. She discovered she loved it and went on to become the first actress to rise through the ranks of the National Theatre to play leading roles. She came to the nation's attention in 1996 playing the careworn Cynthia Purley in Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. Brenda Blethyn won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Best Actress award at Cannes for her portrayal of a neglected woman coming to terms with the fact that the daughter she had adopted at birth had come to find her - and was black. This autumn, Brenda appears as Mrs Bennet in a new film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and in On a Clear Day, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
