Send us a textIn The Pit's 1000th game, New Mexico knocks down a last-second jumper off of a loose-ball scramble to beat the visiting Nevada Wolfpack 82-81 in overtime. The Lobos are 4-0 in conference play and are sitting pretty in the top 3 powers along with Utah State and San Diego State. We recap the game and delve into the rest of the best MWC league games. The game winner: Sanders was double teamed by CJ and FB, causing a crazy pass that Nelly stole at half court with 12 seconds. Amzil gets it with 6 seconds and passes it to Dent who falls down on a spin, then miraculously passes to NJJ releases it and makes history!First Half Summary:New Mexico started strong, leading early with a 12-6 score. The Lobos had a tough time from beyond the arc, going 0-for-4, but compensated with effective free throw shooting (14-of-19).Nevada struggled initially with their shots, with a dismal 2-for-11 from the field, but rallied towards the end of the half, shooting 13-of-17 after their slow start. The Wolf Pack's Nick Davidson and Kobe Sanders combined for 23 points, hitting 5-of-8 from three-point range, which helped Nevada lead at halftime, 37-34.Second Half & Overtime: SummaryThe second half was a back-and-forth affair where New Mexico's defense tightened up, forcing Nevada to miss 13 of their last 20 shots. However, Nevada's free throw shooting was below par, missing 12 opportunities, which was pivotal in the game's outcome. (23-35)The game went into overtime tied at 70, where New Mexico managed to capitalize on some key defensive plays and clutch scoring to clinch the victory.Statistical Highlights:Shooting:New Mexico: 47% from the field, 27.8% from three (5-of-18), and 75% from the free throw line (31-41).Nevada: Shot 42% from the field, an impressive 42% from 3, but only managed 65.7% from the free throw line (23-of-35).Rebounding: New Mexico outrebounded Nevada 35-32, with Joseph's performance being a significant factor. Samantha and Shawn are from Canada and are fans of FC St Pauli. Shawn had seen a page in a sports catalog about a team he had never heard of. He was a Liverpool supporter at the time but the skull and crossbones motif made a distinct impression. Years later when he didn't feel the connection to Liverpool anymore, he recalled the motif, looked up the club on the internet, and read about FC St Pauli and the culture and politics of the club. He started to discuss the club with his fiance Samantha, a Manchester United fan who was disillusioned by the appointment of Jose Mourinho, and they have been on this amazing journey and shared passion for FC St Pauli ever since. They have a podcast called Fell In Love With A Girl: An FC St. Pauli Podcast 7000km Removed We spoke about their trip to the stadium in Hamburg with their friend Nick Davidson who has written a book called about the club called Pirates, Punks & Politics. They talked me through the fantastic culture and fan driven ethos of the club, which you can see in the projects such as Viva Con Agua, the clean water project started by a now retired player and supported by the club. The Levi's Music School which uses Levi's corporate suite at the club during non-match days to provide free music lesson to kids in the district. They shared with me a wonderful and crazy story about a pair of goalkeeper's gloves signed by Philipp Heerwagen that you have to hear! We went on to discuss how entertaining Bundesliga's second division can be with it constantly shuffling week after week, Listen to their wonderful and heartwarming response when I ask them what following the club has brought to their lives.

About the guest: Nick Davidson is a freelance writer based in the New Mexico high desert. After a master's in writing and publishing at Emerson College, Nick began his journalism journey as an intern, fact-checker and then online editor at Outside magazine. After his stint at Outside, he broke out of the office for a bit of wandering and a few far-flung adventures, landing in the wide-open, muddy terrain of freelancing (emphasis on free). The chances and choices of the particular paths he took led him to a variety of work in fact-checking, research, web production, editing, radio storytelling, reporting and writing. He has tended toward reporting stories that, in some way, funnel toward any of the many facets of an active outdoor lifestyle: adventure, environment, travel, science, gear, movement in nature. But at heart, the stories he aims to share are ultimately centered on people and our complex relationship to the world we inhabit, our ever-shifting understanding of that world, and the constant endeavor to find our place in it. Because there's an overabundance of pessimism, destruction, and despair, he always tells stories that, in the weighing of the scales, dip toward optimism, creative problem solving, and inspiration. Nick is also a martial artist, yogi (of sorts), and musician, all aspects of his life that have shaped him and his pursuit of good stories. In the episode: 2:50 – Nick describes how a publishing course he took in college opened his eyes to non-fiction writing and inspired his career as a journalist. 7:21 – While Nick does use social media, he recommends focusing on making sure your work aligns with your ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning your reason for being. 11:57 – Nick describes the understanding writers have with editors about sharing their stories on social media. 13:30 – Rather than using numbers to measure success, Nick describes how he measures success by determining if the work he does aligns with the things he cares about. 17:15 – Nancy and Nick talk about the joy of finding the career path you enjoy every day and cannot imagine retiring from. 21:49 – To store his ideas, Nick simply uses a word processing app. 22:52 – Nick explains the difference between content marketing and storytelling. 30:38 – Nick talks about how risk-taking is necessary to your career and how you can learn from failure. 37:02 – Nick shares how he has grown his network organically by trying to uplift others. 38:43 – For freelance writers and editors, Nick recommends UPOD, a group of freelancers who share their experiences and learn from each other. Quote “If you home in on your ikigai, your personal genius is another word for it, and if you do work that inhabits that, then I think your followers come naturally. They kind of come the way that moths tend to flutter to the brightest lights.” – Nick Davidson, freelance journalist Links: Outside Magazine: https://www.outsideonline.com/ Emerson College: https://www.emerson.edu/ Ray Bradbury: https://raybradbury.com/ Michael Mead: https://www.mosaicvoices.org/ Neil Gaiman: https://www.neilgaiman.com/ TapeACall Pro: https://www.tapeacall.com/ Activate the PR Maven® Flash Briefing on your Alexa Device.
