How To Increase Consumer Engagement Using Infographics With Brian Wallace

Up Arrow Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2023 52:47

Brian Wallace is the Founder and President of NowSourcing, an award-winning and nationally recognized infographic design agency creating visual and influential marketing content. Brian has been named a Google Small Business Advisor since 2016 and joined the SXSW (South by Southwest) advisory board in 2019. He's a mentor for Startup Weekend Louisville and was a volunteer community organizer for #ThinkBig, an initiative to transform Louisville into a flourishing start-up community. In this episode… The marketing industry has become saturated with unproductive content, so advertising strategies must be developed methodically. Content creation is the focal point of digital marketing, but brands overlook the value of long-form explanatory content and infographics, which creates a persuasive narrative for the consumer. How can you entice your audience with infographic content when short-form narratives are easier and quicker to consume?  People in the e-commerce industry believe infographics are synonymous with product listings — a widely believed misconception. Infographics produce long-form explanatory content laying out a detailed narrative for the consumer. Brian Wallace, an infographic expert, explains the value of creating a story rather than telling the audience why your product is necessary. Infographics are a strategic way to captivate your target audience and boost your business' reach.  On this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris welcomes Brian Wallace, Founder and President of NowSourcing, to discuss how leveraging infographics can increase consumer engagement. Brian explains how influential brands can add value to the media. He also shares the scenarios where an infographic would be an unsuccessful marketing attempt.

It's a little bit of everything, all of the time. Content is EVERYWHERE, and for many, it is EVERYTHING. Trends come and go, and millions upon millions of viewers are seeking the next “viral” video. The next “best” thing. If anything's changed in marketing (or, rather, content creation), it's that there are more content creators than ever, making for a busy space that keeps on growing. Add Artificial Intelligence into the mix, and you have thousands of hours of content produced DAILY. Exhausting, right? This week, we sit down with Brian Wallace, the co-founder of NowSourcing, for a discussion on the modern content environment. What happens to consumers when so much content is available? For marketers, what does it take for them to not throw their laptops at a wall and, instead, work to break through the noise? What does it mean for modern content to be not only entertaining but valuable to a consumer?Let's get started!MINDSETS: Doing the Complete Opposite - If you're hearing about possible ChatGPT prompts from, say, your Uber Driver — it's time to consider if you're either behind on your game, or if EVERYBODY knows the “secrets” to content creation. Pivoting to unchartered territory may be the key to being noticed.  AI is NOT a brain replacement - have you or your company embraced AI? Consider its limitations. For now, it's better served for menial, repetitive tasks — not as your content producer.  Remember How People Think - A polished, corporate mindset is a trap door. A fully functioning adult may somehow completely forget how humans think in a professional setting. It's not about “putting on a different shirt,” per se, but rather it's bringing that shirt to the office and remembering the importance of the human mindset. SKILLSETS: The Power to Be Everywhere - People are making decisions about the type of person you are through multiple social and web channels — due diligence causes people to find and review your digital footprint. It's important to stay ahead of the game, keep a professional presence across the platforms, and stay proactive. Picking Your Lane - Let's be honest — you can't be everywhere, at least not effectively. And if you are, it may come across as inauthentic or, even worse, fraudulent. Choosing channels that make sense to you and your brand plays an important role in your content's authenticity. Creativity and Caring - The market, in and of itself, does a terrible job of explaining itself. Why? It fails to make effective connections. As a marketer, you are required to be empathetic in the same way that you have to be an effective creator. Now THAT is something AI can't be: empathetic. Effective Hiring - “Fit for Business” and “Fit for Skill” are NOT the same thing. Consider your hiring practices — does a marketer vibe with your mindsets, or are they completely off base? Interpersonal skills should be considered just as strictly as tangible skills.  Understanding Humanity - Look at a company, its marketplace, and its customers … Odds are, the industry isn't telling the full story of its purpose. Understanding a company's place in the world ALONGSIDE humanity, as well as humanity's strongly-held beliefs about any given industry (say, chiropractic) AND truly caring about general human interests, plays a tremendous role in a company's longevity Avoiding the Safe Bet - Copying off of someone's homework was looked down upon in school — why would copying someone's creative work be looked at better? Unfortunately, people mimic creative styles because it is a familiar, safe bet. It'll hurt you in the long run.  Remember the Goal of Content - If you're a content creator, your goal may be to get the most likes, shares, and comments. That's fine. As a BUSINESS, you cannot forget that content is an aid to revenue growth. Popularity online is not the equivalent of financial success and business longevity. Sure, you're internet famous, but inflated egos don't pay the bills.  TOOLSETS: Infographics Podcasting YouTube Videos Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) Industry Conferences Blogging Generosity Networking Mastering Your Craft RESULTS:As a marketer, you may be inclined to look at vanity metrics as your company's most successful qualities — in the case of social media, for example, you may see more followers as a success when in reality more followers do NOT equate to more sales. Brian implores you to look deeper than that — two circles of a Venn diagram where you're either working for a high-profile company or an amazing company that achieves your ideal output. The “middle” of the Venn diagram is the sweet spot - amazing companies that do amazing things. Brian looks to the story of Moneyball as a great example. Scouts, at one point in time, sought out players that “looked the part.” The flaw with that is, while a person may look like a baseball player, they lack all the necessary fundamentals to succeed, meaning the team as a unit was destined for failure. The same applies to marketing. It is A LOT more scrappy. Data isn't always pretty, but it is necessary for forecasting and success. Effectively, Brian works to break through the noisy, busy content spaces by implementing processes that look past vanity numbers and flashy data for content that is effective, useful, and relevant. A bit more about Brian:Brian Wallace, the co-founder of NowSourcing, an infographic design agency with offices in Kentucky and Ohio.  NowSourcing's vast portfolio sees them assisting businesses ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies.Brian's focused mindset has garnered him accolades from the likes of Google, which has named him a top Small Business Advisor since 2016. Connect with Brian: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nowsourcing/ https://twitter.com/nowsourcing Connect with Mike & Gaby @ Proofpoint Marketing: Mike's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikegrinberg/ Gaby's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabriellaisrael/ LinkedIn Company Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/proofpoint-marketing-llc Proofpoint YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/ProofpointonYouTube Proofpoint Marketing Website: www.proofpoint.marketing

Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening.  Now on to my guest for today, Brian Wallace, founder of NowSourcing, an award-winning infographic design agency.  Brian, who has had his business for 15 years, is in the third iteration of his company's focus. He started out in tech but moved into marketing when he realized that people needed more guidance on how and why to use the tech. When he set about to provide social media, he realized he needed to  get more focused, and has since built a successful company based on the creation of infographics. He's now sought out by big brands to create their infographics.  Brian emphasizes the importance of putting in the work to attain mastery and observes that it's better to be unknown until you have done so so people aren't watching you, enabling you to keep your focus on the work. Brian encourages entrepreneurs to consider how they can help, rather than focusing on what they want, and to focus on building authentic connections. He also cautions against quitting your day job until you have some traction in your dream job.  Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights Don't spam potential connections. It's better to take your time building relationships instead. Show that you are truly interested in and care about the people you reach out to.  Know that being an entrepreneur is different from being a subject matter expert or being a freelancer. Being an entrepreneur means taking control of - and responsibility for - all aspects of your business.  Failing often at first can help you figure out your sweet spot. Once you've found that, work hard to create mastery, keeping in mind that, as articulated by Zig Ziglar, “You can't take an elevator to success; you've got to take the stairs.”  Links to Explore Further Brian Wallace on LinkedIn NowSourcing  NowSourcing on Twitter  Zig Ziglar Keep In TouchBook or Blog or Twitter or LinkedIn or JSYPR Learn more about your ad choices. If you don’t know, an infographic is a graphic visual representation of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly. Back to our guest, Brian Wallace. Brain is a recovering technologist that realised, no one cares about the technical explanation they don’t understand and for the past 13 ½ years has been developing Infographics for his clients through is company NowSourcing, the  number 1 infographic agency in the US. Brain is also a Google Board Member, is on the South by South West (SXSW) Advisory Board, Podcaster and has been featured in the New York Times, Forbes and Mashable. Takeaways - To create an infographic you need to research and find the interesting data points first and foremost, but, don’t whatever you do shortcut the design. This is crucial! It’s the glue that holds all the interesting stuff together, without it you just have a pile of numbers and figures and may not generate the interest you desire. - Make sure what you are creating is story driven, but have the data to back it up. Everyone can tell a story (or even a fake one), but it's the data that will make it and you legitimate. Remember, you should be building that Know, Like and Trust. - And finally, we mentioned previously that you need to start with interesting data points and this is true, but don’t forget to factor in the emotion, what will truly draw in the attention of your customers? Yes, the stats and the design are integral, but that emotional connection will be the part that lasts long in the memory. My friends at NowSourcing have created a handy infographic, be sure to check it out here.First, let’s consider how—and where—humans think. As I outlined in a previous blog, human beings actually have three brains. Since both our hearts and our intestines have neural tissue, we have the heart-brain, the gut-brain and the brain that sits in our cranium (or, if you count the one that sits in our cranium as three—reptile, mammalian, and human neo-cortex—then we actually have five brains!).Where You Think:Reptilian Brain: InstinctAn innate inclination toward a particular behavior in response to a certain stimulusIt’s hardwired in the body from birth to keep us “not dead”Examples: we pull away from something hot, run from danger, etc.Mammalian Brain: Where much intuition, or “gut feeling”, occursA natural, thoughtless process which requires no analysis or deep thinkingUnconsciously developed over time from our experiences and beliefBiases operate here and are unconscious—which is why they can be problematicExamples: trusting someone that’s similar to you, feeling good around someone, etc.Prefrontal Cortex: Analytical thinkingIntentional, organized, conscious thoughtsUsed for planning, problem-solving, decision makingSome biases operate here too, such as making decisions based on a limited data set, or past experiencesExample: weighing the pros and cons of a decision before making it, analyzing potential return on investment before sponsoring a project, etc.Check out these famous examples of intuition—what parts of the brain were involved?44 BCE: Calpurnia, the wife of Julius Caesar, dreams of her husband’s assassination and urges him not to go to the Senate, where he goes anyway and is killedIt’s not magic: Calpurnia was unconsciously reacting to the tensions and signs of political dissent brewing in the Roman Empire [some heart brain, some gut brain, some reptilian and mammalian brain activation]1936: On a hunch, automobile tycoon Charles Howard purchases an underweight colt named Seabiscuit, who goes on to become one of the greatest racehorses in historyIt’s not magic: Howard’s business savvy and military cavalry training gave him the experience to recognize a gifted horse and a sound financial bet [some gut brain, some mammalian and prefrontal cortex brain activation]1962: After being rejected by dozens of publishers, Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time is picked up by John Farrar of Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, which had not published children’s books before [some heart brain, some gut brain, some mammalian and possibly prefrontal cortex brain activation]Most cultures today worship the intellect—the prefrontal cortex functions—and thus often unintentionally condition children to discount their intuition. So let’s consider Albert Einstein and how when he discovered the theory of relativity he said (to paraphrase) “First I felt it, then I saw it, then I could explain it.” Sounds like a bunch of five brain activity to me!How Intuition WorksYour intuition is much faster than your analytical mind and relies on feelings—note above I refer to the neural tissue we all have in both our gut and our heart. We often hear about women’s intuition and how it’s stronger than men’s. Why? Two reasons: first, the insula in the female human brain is larger than in the male. The insula is often called the seat of intuition in human beings, and it’s where hurt feelings fester and hunches often spring from. Second, our female ancestors needed to ensure not only their own survival but also their children’s. While the males were often single-tasking such as hunting (with their larger amygdalas), the females were multi-tasking. The females were caring for the children, watching for danger as they gathered food, tracking non-verbal cues from others, and organizing environmental input and information.3 Steps To Optimize Your Intuition1-Notice your body’s reactions (changes in heartbeat, breathing, muscle tension).2-Understand that your intuition wants whatever you value most (happiness, health, prosperity)–your intuition could be signaling that even though a decision seems logical, it won’t bring you closer to your core goals.3-Likewise notice that your intuition is wiser than our ego, which may want you to make a specific decision for a certain gain, yet that gain might come at too high a cost—and your intuition will be trying to put on the brakes. So how do you balance intuition and logic?Look at the meaning you are making about a certain situation to check your assumptions.Look at your organismic rights and if they will be honored and expanded by that decision.Check yourself for unconscious biases that might be getting in the way.Follow your intuition when:Working in rapidly changing, high-stakes environmentsPerforming tasks you have done many times beforeBrainstorming or discussing business with partners or coworkersFollow your analytical brain when:Working in compliance scenarios or when under public or regulatory scrutinyDoing something you have never done beforeHiring new talent or delegating work to employees“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs, 2005 Stanford Commencement speechThe Net-NetIntuition is a combination of the five functioning brains you haveIntuition can be cultivated and improved by paying attention to the input your brains are offering youYour intuition might just be trying to tell you how to make better decisions—are you ready to listen?Resources Mentioned:The ArticleNowSourcing Intuition infographic 3 Brains blog postBiases Neural tissue we all have in both our gut and our heartOrganismic Rights infographicCognitive Bias CodexEmotional Resilience AssessmentLeadership Experience AssessmentGrowth AssessmentContact ChristineYou’re busy growing. Learn to tell your business story with infographics, one of the most powerful and effective digital communications tools. Brian Wallace of NowSourcing joins me in this episode of the Go For Launch podcast. Brian is the president of NowSourcing, an industry leading infographic design agency based in Louisville, KY. The agency works with companies that range from small businesses to Fortune 500 firms. Brian also runs a local event to make Louisville a more competitive city (#ThinkBig) and he has been named a 2016 Google Small Business Advisor. Brian began his career in technology, and at one point became chief technology officer at a firm outside New York City. But he wanted more flexibility. He was fortunate to convince the company to allow him to leave and retain them as his first client. While he was good at the IT work, he found he liked marketing more than tech support. So in 2005, he switched his agency's focus and got into social media consulting early. However, the space started getting crowded and in 2008-2008, he decided to specialize in designing and promoting infographics for clients. See below for a great example of their work. NowSourcing has become the top choice for companies who need to tell a compelling story visually. Brian and he team spend weeks, not hours, doing a “deep dive” to understand their client’s message and objectives, design the actual graphic and perhaps most importantly drive traffic through their extensive network of media partners. The company recently launched the first “virtual reality” infographic at South by Southwest.
