I sat down with Malte Landwehr, who left VP of SEO at Idealo to become CPO and CMO at Peec AI, the platform that tracks what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews actually cite. We open on the strangest finding of the year. GummySearch, a Reddit analytics tool that shut down last November, now sits behind about 0.1% of all ChatGPT citations. From there we get into why clicks are the wrong way to measure AI search, why your local brand keeps losing to US ones, why scaled AI content rockets then crashes, and why Malte says SEO is dead as a default growth channel.Guest ProfileMalte Landwehr is CPO and CMO at Peec AI, an AI search visibility platform that runs daily prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Grok. He spent more than twenty years in search and product, including five years as VP of SEO at Idealo and five years as VP of Product at Searchmetrics. In his first six months at Peec AI, the company grew from roughly $500K to $5M in ARR.Chapters[0:00] Intro[1:15] Leaving one of Europe's best SEO jobs for AI search[5:07] Why clicks are the wrong way to measure ChatGPT[8:22] Which answer engines actually matter[12:34] GummySearch: a dead product winning ChatGPT citations[18:33] Listicles and the English-language fan-out bias[23:48] Advertorials, local results, and Mount AI content[33:50] Digital PR over technical SEO[36:27] ChatGPT Shopping is scraped Google Shopping, and the MCP contest[42:16] SEO is dead as a default channel, and the chunking moveKey TakeawaysStop measuring AI search by clicks. In an LLM, clicking is optional, so ChatGPT can look like 1% of your traffic while shaping most of your buying journeys. Measure the influence on the decision, not the visit. What gets written about you offsite now matters more than your own technical SEO. Grounding pulls from Reddit, G2, Wikipedia, YouTube, and news, so digital PR is the bigger lever for how AI describes and recommends you.One citable paragraph beats a chunked article. Put your main claim near the top in two or three declarative, self-contained sentences that name the entities. Do not shred a whole article into one-line bullets.Notable Quotes"In a web search, clicking is part of the intended user journey. In an LLM, clicking is completely optional." RSS 47: The 10-Year Shift: Why Distribution Is Your Best AI Strategy

Create Like the Greats

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2026 28:01

In this episode of The Ross Simmonds Show, Ross makes the case that AI visibility isn't a new game — it's the result of a decade of distribution compounding in plain sight. He breaks down why CREAM is dead, why D.R.E.A.M. wins, and exactly which channels, from Reddit to YouTube to review sites, are shaping what Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity actually cite. Key Takeaways and Insights: The 10-Year Head Start Most Brands Missed AI visibility didn't start with ChatGPT. It started with consistent content distribution years before LLMs entered the conversation. The brands winning in AI-powered search today built authority everywhere, early. Momentum favors those who showed up first and often. CREAM Is Dead. DREAM Wins. "Content Rules Everything Around Me" is outdated. Distribution Rules Everything Around Me is the new mandate. Creation is easier than ever. Attention is not. Visibility in AI systems is engineered through amplification, not hope. Google Is Still the Dominant AI Platform The most-used AI discovery engine isn't ChatGPT or Perplexity. It's Google, and millions use it daily without realizing they're inside an AI-powered experience. AI Overviews shape answers before users ever see the 10 blue links. The goal is to influence the answer, not just the ranking. SEO Isn't Dead. It's a Distribution Channel. SEO remains critical for bottom-of-funnel and transactional queries. Double E-E-A-T, Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust, matters more than ever. Most teams optimize pages. The best teams optimize ecosystems. Reddit's B2B Takeover Reddit now dominates high-CPC, long-tail, and commercial-intent SERPs and is generating millions of citations inside Google AI Overviews and LLM responses. The strategy: organic participation through authentic, useful answers in the right subreddits, and paid capture of high-intent users already validating buying decisions. YouTube as a Search Weapon Google prioritizes YouTube in AI results because it's inside their ecosystem, and AI Overviews are increasingly embedding video responses. If you'd write a blog post about it, you should consider filming it. Influencer collaborations can shift SERP narratives faster than most teams realize. Review Sites and Third-Party Validation G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Yelp, and TripAdvisor are high-trust sources that LLMs actively pull from. Reviews and awards influence AI credibility signals directly. Fill out every field. Encourage every review. Do the unsexy work, because LLMs do. Offsite Mentions and Digital PR as AI Fuel Inside LLMs, brand mentions matter, not just backlinks. Guest posts, podcasts, newsletters, and press build the narrative association that shapes AI understanding. Repeated brand and category pairing across the web is how you train AI to associate you with your space. Marketing is distributed storytelling at scale. The Modern Distribution Stack SEO foundation. Reddit, organic and paid. YouTube strategy. Review site optimization. Offsite mentions and digital PR. Your website is one node in the system, not the whole system. Resources & Tools:

Send us a textWant links that don't vanish with the next algorithm update? We dive into digital PR and show how to earn authoritative coverage that boosts rankings, brand searches, and even AI search citations. Instead of paying for links, we focus on creative stories and credible data that journalists choose to share. We start with why links still move the needle and how AI-driven results increasingly reward sources that get referenced across the web. From there we unpack what makes digital PR “white hat,” tracing the shift after Penguin from paid link schemes to story-led outreach. You'll hear a practical blueprint for campaigns: pick a simple, timely question, back it with trustworthy data, present a clear hook, and pitch concise angles to the right outlets. We also explain why unlinked mentions still matter for awareness and how to ask for attribution without burning relationships. To make it real, we break down proven ideas: a playful analysis estimating real-world salaries for iconic video game characters, and a data-led piece identifying the easiest and hardest UK driving test centres using official pass-rate data. Send us a textA bombshell revelation from a recent Google API documentation leak has potentially exposed the inner workings of how the search giant evaluates links. In this eye-opening episode, I explore what I'm calling Google's "Actual Surfer" model – a sophisticated evolution of their PageRank system that may completely transform how we think about link building. The leaked data suggests Google categorizes every link in its index into three quality tiers: high, medium, and low. Most importantly, real user traffic data collected through Chrome appears to determine which tier a page belongs to. Pages receiving significant verifiable traffic get classified as high-quality, while those with minimal or no traffic fall into the low-quality bucket where their links are effectively ignored for ranking purposes. This revelation carries profound implications for SEO practitioners. Traditional link building schemes involving private blog networks or artificially created websites receiving no real human traffic are likely completely devalued. Meanwhile, Digital PR efforts securing placements on high-traffic publications may be significantly more valuable than previously thought – even when those links carry the nofollow attribute. Google's updated stance on treating nofollow as a "hint" rather than a directive suddenly makes perfect sense in this context – they may pass ranking value through nofollow links that appear on highly-trafficked pages in contextually relevant positions.Ready to adapt your SEO strategy to this new understanding of how Google evaluates links? In this episode of The Long Game Podcast, Alex Burkett interviews Logan Freeman, Global Head of SEO at ManyChat. Together they explore the evolving landscape of SEO in the AI era, particularly the rise of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and how it's changing everything from keyword strategy to attribution modeling. Logan shares tactical approaches for optimizing content for LLMs (large language models), including using FAQ schemas, focusing on off-page visibility, and thinking like a product marketer. They discuss how brand mentions are now more powerful than backlinks, why traditional SEO tools fall short for GEO, and how Logan approaches measurement when attribution is nearly impossible. The episode also explores LLM perception, off-site trust-building, and creative ways SEOs can future-proof their strategies by merging content, digital PR, and productKey TakeawaysSEO vs. GEO: Traditional SEO focuses on keywords, while GEO requires optimizing for hyper-personalized, conversational queries used in LLMs.LLM Perception Is Real: How AI models “perceive” your brand based on off-site mentions can limit (or expand) your visibility in AI answers.Brand Mentions > Backlinks: In the world of AI search, brand visibility across trusted platforms outweighs classic SEO signals like links.SEO as Product Marketing: SEOs must deeply understand users and position content like a PMM would—focused on problems, personas, and differentiation.Dark Attribution Is Growing: Most traffic influenced by LLMs doesn't click through—making measurement harder and more reliant on referral glimpses and qualitative insights.Go Beyond On-Page Optimization: Embedding schema, FAQs, and latent questions can increase the odds of being cited in LLMs.Get Creative with PR: To influence LLM results, you may need broad digital and traditional PR campaigns that shift how your brand is referenced across the web.Show LinksVisit ManychatConnect with Logan Freedman on LinkedInConnect with Alex Birkett on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Omniscient Digital on LinkedIn or TwitterSome interviews you might enjoy and learn from:Actionable Tips and Secrets to SEO Strategy with Dan Shure (Evolving SEO)Building Competitive Marketing Content with Sam Chapman (Aprimo)How to Build the Right Data Workflow with Blake Burch (Shipyard)Data-Driven Thought Leadership with Alicia Johnston (Sprout Social)Purpose-Driven Leadership & Building a Content Team with Ty Magnin (UiPath)Also, check out our Kitchen Side series where we take you behind the scenes to see how the sausage is made at our agency:Blue Ocean vs Red Ocean SEOShould You Hire Writers or Subject Matter Experts? How Do Growth and Content Overlap?Connect with Omniscient Digital on social:Twitter: @beomniscientLinkedin: Be OmniscientListen to more episodes of The Long Game podcast here: https://beomniscient.com/podcast/

Meritus Media isn't just another digital agency. It's not a growth hack lab, a content mill, or a stitched-together team of Upwork freelancers. It's a convergence—a rare blend of what still works, what used to work, and what should work when it comes to visibility, credibility, and influence. That's why I joined. It's why I stepped behind the Meritus shield—why I aligned my decades of SEO, ORM, and digital strategy experience with a crew led by Mike Falkow and built on the legacy of Sally Falkow.A Legacy That Still LeadsSally Falkow is a name that belongs in any serious digital PR curriculum—if such a thing existed. I've known her for 20 years. She's not a pioneer in the tech-bro sense. She's a veteran of real PR: press releases by fax, journalist calls by phone, media earned—not bought. She was ahead of the curve before social media had a name. She helped shape the Social Media News Release. She launched The Proactive Report in 2003 and wrote SMART News: How to Create Branded Content That Gets Found in Search and Shared on Social Media. She earned PRSA's APR, trained 2,500+ execs, and was PR News' PR Trainer of the Year. Her legacy? Treating journalists as collaborators, not targets. Earning coverage through relevance. And blending the language of PR with the structure of search. From Mizuno to MeritusSally and I first worked together at Social Ally. One of our first projects? A blogger campaign for Mizuno Running. Instead of paying for posts, we offered influencers shoes to test, run in, and review—if they wanted. No scripts. No contracts. It worked. Real people wrote real things. Trusted voices moved the needle. That same spirit lives on at Meritus. What Meritus DoesMeritus Media is full-spectrum. Not bolted-on services. Not a list of tactics. A strategic system where each part strengthens the next:Digital PR with a journalist's eyeReputation Management that creates narrativeSEO that's technical, strategic, and brand-alignedInfluencer Outreach built on relationships, not ratesWeb Dev & UX that marries story and performanceSocial Media with tone, not just timingContent Strategy that serves both people and platformsFrom schema to storytelling, long-tail search to crisis response—everything is integrated. The Falkow FactorMike Falkow, Sally's son and now CEO, brings creative and technical fluency. Former surfer, art director, actor, and developer, Mike leads with instinct and insight. He's growing Meritus' footprint across LA, Tampa, and the UK. His brother Jonathan “Cokey” Falkow handles European development with the same mix of charm and clarity.Together, they carry forward Sally's DNA—updated for today's world. Why I'm HereBecause this model works. Because these people are real. Because Sally's relationship-first, journalism-first, clarity-driven ethos isn't a pitch here—it's the standard.Clients aren't budgets. They're collaborators. Success isn't clicks. It's momentum. Trust. Visibility with gravity. The FutureVisibility now is hybrid: earned and owned, organic and engineered. Built with the heart of a journalist and the brain of an SEO.That's why I joined Meritus. That's why I'm building with this team. And that's why, if you're tired of duct-taped digital and tired ideas, you should be watching.Let's get to work.

Too many founders underestimate the difficulty, thinking that once their campaign goes live, the crowd will come running. The truth, as Jason Fishman explains, is that success starts long before a campaign launches.Jason, Co-Founder and CEO of Digital Niche Agency (DNA) and host of the "Test. Optimize. Scale." podcast, is one of the industry's most experienced investor acquisition experts. He helps founders raise capital by creating marketing funnels that turn strangers into advocates. In today's episode, he shared the single most important element of a successful crowdfunding raise: planning."If you fail to plan, you plan to fail," Jason said. "Imagine launching a website tomorrow and trying to bring 50,000 people towards it and get 1,000 of those people to convert at a transactional value of $1,000 or more."That's the scale of the challenge many founders face without realizing it. Jason broke down how campaigns that succeed aren't just lucky—they're methodical. They use strategies built on industry research and competitive marketing audits. These show founders what messaging and channels are working and which aren't, enabling them to craft a custom roadmap for every stage of their campaign. He encourages founders to go deep on pre-launch preparation. That includes clearly identifying audiences, traffic sources, and strategic partnerships. According to Jason, it also means fine-tuning the content and offering page to ensure it's optimized for conversions."You still need to have a well-thought-out plan on where that traffic's coming from," he noted, even for small campaigns targeting $50,000. "One way or the other, I need to figure out how am I getting those actual visits to my offering page."Jason and his team at DNA have helped clients raise hundreds of millions of dollars from the crowd. The secret? They treat marketing as a science—and a strategy-first mindset is always step one.To hear more from Jason, check out this episode and join us at SuperCrowdLA, where he'll speak twice and be available throughout the event. Don't miss the chance to learn from one of the best in the business.tl;dr:Jason Fishman explains why strategic planning and marketing are essential for crowdfunding success at any scale. He shares how the most successful campaigns use research and competitor audits to map traffic and conversions.Jason emphasizes that even small campaigns must create momentum with targeted audiences and compelling content. His superpower, generating excitement, helps him motivate teams, founders, and friends to rally around a vision.Jason encourages understanding your audience's fears and desires to inspire action and build lasting engagement. How to Develop Inspiring Excitement As a SuperpowerJason Fishman's superpower is his ability to inspire excitement and rally people around a shared goal. “Getting people excited…has been present my whole life,” Jason explained. He shared how this skill underpins his success in building impactful marketing campaigns, emphasizing that understanding what drives and motivates people is key. Jason applies this talent to craft compelling messaging and visuals that move audiences to action.Illustrative Story:Jason shared a personal anecdote about planning a wedding for his wife's cousin, who had been overwhelmed by the process. By addressing objections and highlighting exciting details, Jason turned their reluctance into enthusiasm. The result was a beautiful wedding overlooking the beach, with Jason even serving as the DJ. This story exemplifies his ability to energize others and create positive outcomes.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Understand Your Audience: Identify what excites and motivates them, as well as their fears.Communicate the Vision: Show others what success looks like and why it matters.Address Objections: Turn concerns into opportunities by re-framing challenges in a positive light.Leverage Energy: Use your enthusiasm to inspire and rally others around shared goals.By following Jason's example and advice, you can make inspiring excitement a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJason Fishman (he/him):Co-Founder and CEO of Digital Niche Agency DNA and Host of the "Test. Optimize. Scale."
