Shlomi Berger's 20-year-old daughter Agam was taken hostage by Hamas militants on October 7th, 2023. She was at a remote outpost of the Israeli Defense Forces and it was the beginning of her second day as a soldier. Her family hopes and prays she is still alive, though It has been months since the last sign of life. Nour Swirki is a Palestinian journalist and young mother of two who is now stranded in Gaza alongside her husband. Her two children, parents and siblings all crossed into Cairo when the border was briefly opened. Noor hoped she could follow soon after but that plan was scuttled when the border was abruptly closed again. Shlomi and Noor are just two of the many thousands whose lives have been upended by the events of October 7th and the year of war that followed. I was blessed to talk to Jenny Sividya, a 41 year old mother of two children who resides in Petach Tikva in central Israel. She talks to us about what that day was like, how she took her grief and is helping other survivors and what should be think about 4 months out and every day. She has a master's degree in social psychology from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and is currently a doctoral candidate in gender studies at Bar Ilan University. On October 7th Jenny was at the Nova Festival with her partner. Her younger brother Shlomi and his girlfriend Lilli were also at the festival. Jenny and her partner survived. Shlomi and Lilli were brutally murdered. Less than two weeks after Jenny buried her brother, she started volunteering at a healing center that holds support groups for parents, siblings and friends of those who have been murdered on and since October 7th. Utilizing her professional and personal experience, she now helps others who are also suffering the same unimaginable grief.

Brouria Carni Hadass lives in the tiny Kibbutz of Kerem Shalom on the Israel-Gaza border. On Saturday, October 7th, she went into the fortified safe room in her house when the first alarm sounded, quickly realizing this attack was "unlike anything we went through before. It felt like something else." On this week's episode of the Harretz Weekly podcast, Carni Hadass spoke to host Allison Kaplan Sommer from the hotel in the southern city of Eilat, where the members of her community are staying since they were evacuated from their homes following the Hamas attack on Israel's Gaza border communities, which killed over 1,300 people. "Every simple thing is complicated now," she says, though she acknowledges that compared to so many other people affected by the massacres, she and her family are "spoiled refugees," trying to maintain some sense of normalcy while living in a hotel. The friend, Shahar Debbie Mathias, said her son Rotem was worried about his friend, Brouria's son. But their next conversation was the last. Hamas gunmen were already inside Debbie's house, and she was hiding with her husband Shlomi and their son in the safe room. The gunmen managed to shoot into the room and get in. When Debbie stopped replying to Brouria's messages, she asked her son to text his Rotem, who texted back: "My parents are dead, I need help." "We were lucky. The Israeli military has accused Palestinian militant groups of firing dozens of rockets from southern Lebanon into northern Israel. It said most of the 34 rockets were intercepted but that six hit Israeli territory, causing damage to buildings. Hamas said it had no information about who fired the missiles. The attack was the biggest single barrage from Lebanon in 17 years. 137 Israel and Silicon Valley with Shlomi Kofman Shlomi Kofman began his term as Israel's Consul General to the Pacific Northwest in August 2017. Prior to this appointment he served as a Policy Advisor to the Deputy Foreign Ministers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Jerusalem, Israel.   Over the course of his 20-year diplomatic career, Kofman has served as Israel's Deputy Consul General in New York City, Chief of Staff to Ambassadors in Washington D.C., Deputy Ambassador in Thailand and Deputy Consul General in Shanghai. His past domestic Foreign Ministry positions include Director of North American Economic Affairs, Policy Advisor to the Deputy Foreign Minister, Diplomatic Advisor & Director of the International Department in the Parliament and Ministry of National Infrastructure, and the Head of the Northeast Asia sector. Prior to joining the Foreign Ministry, Kofman worked in the high-tech industry representing the Israeli company Orbot in South Korea, as well as a consultant to a leading Israeli company, ECI. Kofman holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations & East Asian studies from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a Master's from Webster University – Shanghai University of Finance & Economics. He also holds an Associate's engineering degree. Kofman was born in Tbilisi, the capital of the Soviet Republic of Georgia and made Aliya (immigrated) to Israel at the age of nine, after being refused for three years by soviet authorities.
