Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn an era of rising polarization, what does religious liberty really mean—and why does it matter today? Dr. Owen Anderson, professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University, joins Will and Josh to unpack the philosophical roots of religious freedom, natural theology, and the moral principles that shaped the American founding. Together, they explore tough questions: How do we define religious liberty in a pluralistic society? Are the ideals in the Declaration of Independence grounded in Protestant theology? What does it mean to protect religious freedom without weaponizing faith for political gain? The conversation also touches on hot-button issues like Christian nationalism, DEI programs, transgender rights, and the complex relationship between church and state. Whether you're curious about the faith of the Founders or wrestling with modern debates about freedom of conscience, this episode offers thoughtful insight into the intersection of faith, philosophy, and democracy.Guest Bio:Dr. Owen Anderson is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University and the pastor of Christ the King Church in Phoenix. This is CrossPoliticNews' Weekly Roundup, sponspored by Christian Business Leaders Network. If you want to find out more about this network and its efforts to connect Christian business leaders so that they can more effectively help their businesses and shape culture, visit businessmakers.network. Again, that's businessmakers.network. And don't forget that our first Business Makers Summit is happening next week on April 10th and 11th in Pennsylvannia. If you want to find out more about it, make sure to check out the link in the description and read about this great opportunity to learn from other Christian business leaders and shapers of culture. https://businessmakers.network/events/business-makers-summit-pa/ As our journalist Jonathan Kelly reported, Dr. Owen Anderson is a professor at Arizona State University who has taught religion and philosophy for over twenty years Dr. Anderson has been criticized for one of his class in the past few years, "Introduction to Christianity", because 1) it had too much Christianity in it, and 2) he didn’t talk about issues that his department's overseers wanted to hear in the course, like decolonization or slavery. Eventually, the college took away the general education credit for this class, so the number of students in the course grew smaller and smaller until it didn’t even fit the requirement of twenty students in the classroom. Is Arizona State University just trying to be neutral with its classes and how it approaches religion? No. Dr. Anderson says that there is no neutral ground: “We’ve wrongly accepted the idea that institutions are neutral. All that really means is that they’re not Christian.” (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/the-silencing-of-christianity-and-the-battle-for-academic-freedom) We can see this because, as Dr. Anderson points out, the college offers courses that strictly oppose Christianity: "As of now, my class isn’t being offered. I checked the ASU course catalog for the fall—there’s only one class with Christianity in the title, while there are multiple courses about witchcraft." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/the-silencing-of-christianity-and-the-battle-for-academic-freedom) As we can see, neutrality is really just warfare against Christianity and God. Dr. Anderson is also suing Arizona State University because they require employees to take DEI training, because they are enforcing their own ideology on their employees. ASU should not be allowed to do this, so Dr. Anderson is taking a stand against the college. However, there is a deeper problem than just DEI training, and Dr. Anderson sees this. The deeper problem is the reality that the majority of our culture’s colleges attack Christianity: "A huge number of students enter college as Christians and leave their faith behind. But the opposite isn’t true—you don’t see students going to university and suddenly becoming Christian." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/the-silencing-of-christianity-and-the-battle-for-academic-freedom) Dr. Anderson wants parents to really consider where they send their children to college, remembering both the fact that many colleges are anti-Christian and the fact that people don’t always need a college degree to get a good job. On a slightly different topic, our journalist Luke Edison wrote about the decline of courageous pastors in the church. Too many of them want to stay clear of political topics to try and keep the unity of the church. But the fact is, many political topics overlap with spiritual topics because many deal with spiritual issues. For instance, many pastors are shy when they have to talk about homosexual relationships, education, or Israel. They don’t want to be too strong on any topic because of the pressure they could get from culture. But, as we see in Revelation, God hates lukewarm Christians. This doesn’t mean to be rash, but, as our reporter Luke Edison wrote, "we are to fear God and God alone – not secular culture or the demands of humans." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/is-your-pastor-a-coward) Christians need to consider whether or not their church takes a strong stance on actions condemned in the Bible, such as abortion, transgenderism, and the like. If these issues are not definite, the pastor probably can’t stand his own ground when it comes to politics and the church. We prioritize parts of politics because of how God speaks about those subjects in the Bible. As our journalist Luke Edison wrote, God is political, but God is political in the sense that good politics will align with the Word, and bad politics will contradict it. "The topic of politics falls squarely under God’s purview and authority, and thus, while God is not political for the sake of politics, politics are moral, and morality flows from God." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/is-your-pastor-a-coward) So, when we talk about politics, we are talking about a subject that connects back to God and his commandments. Morality is linked to politics, so pastors should not be weak when it comes to defending God’s truth.

Reformed Forum hosted an online symposium on February 29, 2024, featuring a series of thought-provoking sessions designed to explore the intersections of theology, history, and the contemporary challenges facing the church. In this session Owen Anderson explored the phenomenon of secularization, particularly focusing on the transformative changes that took place at Princeton Seminary and within Presbyterian education. Following Dr. Anderson's presentation, we entertained questions from viewers who submitted questions in our online chat. This discussion was especially timely in light of a growing educational renaissance, driven by parents increasingly concerned about the radical-leftist tendencies in modern education. There is a compelling opportunity to consider the rich Presbyterian history, which could provide valuable alternatives and insights. This topic is not only relevant to our current cultural context but also deeply rooted in our denominational heritage, offering a unique perspective on the evolving landscape of education. Owen Anderson has been teaching philosophy and religious studies for 21 years and is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University. His research focuses on general revelation and related questions about reality, value, and knowledge. He has been a fellow at Princeton University, a visiting scholar at Princeton Seminary, and a fellow at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has published several books including "Job: A Philosophical Commentary" (2021) "The Declaration of Independence and God" (2015) and "The Natural Moral Law" (2013). He regularly teaches Philosophy of Religion, Introduction to Philosophy, Applied Ethics, World Religions, Western Religious Traditions, and Religion in America. Live and Let Live is the world's only real peace movement. The Movement is organized around a fundamental principle we call the Live and Let Live Principle. As greater numbers of people truly accept the Live and Let Live Principle, we will necessarily evolve towards a world predominated by both freedom and peace. The Live and Let Live Principle essentially holds that aggression is wrong. There is simply no way to achieve a free or peaceful world so long as the law permits people, groups, or governments to aggress against others. With aggression outlawed, competent adults would be entitled to both define and peacefully pursue their happiness. Competent adults should be in charge of their own lives, property, money, and time. They have the right to be left alone or to peacefully and fairly contract with other competent adults regarding their property. A free society requires the proper balance between the rights of one person to do whatever they want with their property with the equally important rights of others not to be disturbed in their affairs by the activities of others. This is the essence of freedom. People adhering to the Live and Let Live Principle agree that the initiation of force, fraud, or coercion is wrong in all cases. It remains wrong even if the initiation of force, fraud, or coercion is employed to accomplish desirable moral goals. It is not possible to aggress our way to a peaceful society. It isn't only the actual initiation of either force, fraud, or coercion that violates the rights of others. The substantial threat of such an initiation also violates another's rights. It is for this same reason that we recognize a justified act of self-defense even before an actual use of unjustified force. That we don't always agree on exactly which particular circumstances allow a justified act of self-defense doesn't mean we fail to recognize the principle that one need not wait until another's fist hits their face before such person can legally and properly act to prevent the aggression. Elementary Guide to the Philosophers, by Owen Anderson: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1685645836/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_601XYA7NWRS1ZMQJ0A32 https://drowenanderson.com https://thethink.institute It shouldn't come as a surprise that many of the messages we receive today are in conflict—they conflict with one another (like, should I follow my heart like Disney, or should I clean my room like Jordan Peterson?), and it seems that, more often than not, they even conflict with the truth, especially when judged against the standard of the Bible. As Christians, 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we're supposed to "take every thought captive to obey Christ," but we're steeped in the world and its thoughts for most of the day, every day. Thinking well, wisely and biblically takes work. Not everyone needs to go out and get a philosophy or theology degree, but we should all learn to think more like a philosopher. And if this is true for us, it's also true for our kids. After all, they'll be here after we're gone, and they'll shape the world according to the ideas we helped to instill in them. With that in mind, it's obvious that our work today in helping them to think like philosophers—rooted in the word of God—can go a long way tomorrow. So how do we help our kids to "think like philosophers?" In this episode of the Think Podcast, Owen Anderson returns to help us out. He's a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University, and the author of a brand new book aimed at teaching high schoolers about the great minds of the past—and a few not-so-great ones—to help them think, like philosophers. The problem of suffering has been with humanity since the very beginning. And no book of the Bible addresses this problem more directly than the book of Job. But what is the meaning of the book? How should we really understand Job's story? And is it possible that the majority of commentators are missing something important here? In this episode, Dr. Owen Anderson helps us get to the true, deeper, philosophical meaning of Job. Owen has been teaching philosophy and religious studies for more than two decades and is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University. His research focuses on general revelation and related questions about reality, value, and knowledge. He has been a fellow at Princeton University, a visiting scholar at Princeton Seminary, and a fellow at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has published several books including "Job: A Philosophical Commentary" (2021), in which he argues that it is Job, not the Greeks, who was the earliest philosopher. Specifically, you will learn: Why Owen Anderson believes Job is the earliest work of true philosophy. Why we should view Job as a philosophical conversation. What is the deepest problem being addressed in the book of Job? Whether Job had been sinning, and why he was still called "blameless." What's up with Job's 10 kids. Are Hollywood Movies Just Retelling A Luciferian Myth? (Joseph Campbell's Monomyth Theory and the Bible)

Are your favorite movies… satanic? It’s a common evangelical practice to try and find the Gospel in popular movies and culture. But what if there is another, much darker, story at play? 1949, philosopher Joseph Campbell rocked the literary world with his book, The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Therein, Campbell presented his theory that many—nearly all—of the ancient myths are all really telling essentially the same story about basically the same hero, who essentially passes through the same stages on his adventure before arriving at functionally the same destination. And, the theory goes, it’s not just the ancient myths that do this, but today’s popular stories as well, right down to our movies and comics from DC, Marvel, Disney, other major production studios… even Star Wars. Do not miss this bonus episode of the Think Podcast. We’re going to be getting into some deep, theoretical waters and discussing ideas you are not likely to hear anywhere else. So here’s the tricky part: while many are searching these popular stories for elements of the Gospel, my guest today makes the case that they have more in common with a darker tale: the history of Lucifer, his opposition to God, his fall and his deception of mankind. In this episode, what we’re talking about specifically is this: there is quite possibly a satanic or luciferian theme running through our popular stories. This is something we need to be aware of, because as Christians we’re supposed to be alert against the prowling schemes of Satan (1 Peter 5:8), test all things, and hold on to the good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). and hold on to the good. Specifically, in this episode you’ll learn about: Who Joseph Campbell is, and what his monomyth concept is In what way many ancient stories and myths are the same What Genesis 1-3 teaches and how Satan distorts it. Why one’s explanation of myth similarities depends on one’s worldview How we see the monomyth pattern pop up in modern stories including The Hobbit, “Star Wars,” and movies like “Transformers,” “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” and “Infinity War?” Whether evangelical thought leaders are right or wrong to mine these stories for elements of the Gospel Joel’s recent interaction with someone with a friend who is a self-proclaimed Luciferian and “Prometheist” Joel’s guest for this episode (which is a bonus episode—did we mention that?) is Owen Anderson. Owen has been teaching philosophy and religious studies for 21 years and is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University. His research focuses on general revelation and related questions about reality, value, and knowledge. He has been a fellow at Princeton University, a visiting scholar at Princeton Seminary, and a fellow at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has published several books including "Job: A Philosophical Commentary" (2021), about which Joel will be interviewing him on a future ThinkPod episode. What is typology? How are the concepts of myth and typology related? How do these concepts illuminate our understanding of the relationship between the "Pagan Christs" and Jesus Christ? What role do other non-Christian myths have--or do not have--in our coming to Christ? What about those who have not heard of Christ, have not accepted Christ today? What about those who lived before him? What role in myth and typology play in C.S. Lewis's writings? All these questions and more will be addressed today in my interview with Dr. Owen Anderson, who is professor of philosophy and religious studies in Arizona State University's New College.
