Las misiones de expertos extranjeros fueron de gran respaldo para que las iniciativas de las élites económicas de dicha región tuvieran eco a escala nacional, lo que permitió la inversión pública en infraestructura energética, transporte y adecuación de tierras y aguas en el departamento del Valle del Cauca; propiciando el despegue definitivo de la agroindustria de la caña de azúcar, a pesar de las contingencias que esta ha enfrentado en los cambiantes mercados internacionales. Tras una revisión de múltiples fuentes históricas, este artículo muestra las muchas convergencias –y no pocas disidencias– entre las visiones que comparten el Plan Lilienthal y el empresariado vallecaucano en su propósito de modernizar esta región colombiana, y las repercusiones derivadas de su implementación.
