Today Ali is talking to Libby Wicks, a surrogacy mama who went through a five-plus year struggle to have her baby girl. Libby talks about her not one, but two ectopic pregnancies, her emergency tube removal, and being diagnosed (wrongly, she would find out much later) with Asherman's Syndrome. She also talks about IVF and how her infertility journey affected her mental health. "I was suffering from anxiety," she says. "There were many days I wasn't able to leave the house. I wasn't able to work, and it was absolutely devastating. I was a shell of myself. And I want other women to know that that is actually normal." Libby talks about pivoting to surrogacy and finding NewGen Families, which is known for their thoughtful matches and their empathetic and expert care when it comes to both surrogates and future parents. She talks about bonding with her surrogate, the group text she had with her husband and her surrogate; and after going through so much heartache, finally bringing home her baby girl. For more, follow them on IG @newgenfamiliesOr go to: https://newgenfamilies.comTOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE: Infertility; TTC; ectopic pregnancies; trauma; IVF; normalizing the conversation around ART; anxiety and depression; Asherman's syndrome; surrogacySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/infertile-af/donationsEPISODE SPONSORS:WORK OF ARTAli's Children's Book about IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technologyhttps://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksDo not miss Ali's children's book about IVF! Lindsey begins her motherhood journey with the experience of an ectopic pregnancy, which she - amazingly -  resolved without taking medication or having surgery. Despite her being told by medical professionals that it would hard for her to conceive again, she did, easily.  Her first baby was born in a hospital, and this experience left her knowing that she would never give birth in a hospital again. Her next baby was born at home, with a midwife. Lindsey then began working as a midwife apprentice and quickly realized she was seeing many of the same interventions, interruptions, and violations at homebirths as happens in hospitals. She realized she wouldn't want any of the midwives she was working with at her own birth. They were effectively bringing the hospital into the home. Around this time, Lindsey's third baby, in spirit form, was calling to her, but she knew she had to leave her apprenticeship to be in integrity with herself before this baby would come. She left the medical midwifery world and instead began supporting freebirths, and it was here she learned to trust birth again. Her third baby was born at home with just her family present. It was just a normal Wednesday afternoon, except she gave birth in her bathtub! The mundane and sacred, intertwined. On this episode, host Sophia Lorey sits down with Dr. Bowers to discuss the difference between miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and abortions.People are shouting on social media that women will not get miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy treatment in states that have strong abortion ban laws. Although this is simply not the truth. Dr. Bowers explains how these three all are different - note abortion is the intentional ending of a life, miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies are not. Dr. Maralee C. Bowers is a board certified family physician practicing in Northern California. She works with local pregnancy resource clinics and the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline. She graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, with honors, and received her M.D. from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. She continued her medical training in the family medicine residency program at Hinsdale Hospital in Illinois, and then moved back to her hometown to practice. She is one of the few remaining family physicians doing house visits for homebound patients as well as general primary care in office. She is also a mom of five kids, ages 7 through 21, and the wife of a Catholic Deacon. She believes that faith and science are the bases of truth; one cannot exist without the other. What does an IVF Pregnancy journey look like after losing your fallopian tubes? Today's guest experienced two ectopic pregnancies that resulted in blood loss but also for her to lose her fallopian tubes.  Britne Taylor lost her fallopian tubes in her first year of marriage and saving for IVF seemed impossible as her job only offered $500 towards fertility benefits.  A few years later she was recommended to become a doula through Sisters in Loss that helped assist her on her healing journey and save for IVF treatments.   In this episode, Britne takes us on her journey of how becoming a doula and supporting over 18 families has healed her and serve as God told her to do while she waited and saved for IVF.  She began her IVF journey in January 2023 and had 1 failed transfer and she is currently at the time we recorded 12 weeks pregnant with her miracle baby girl and she has another girl embryo waiting. We talk about the journey in waiting and how serving others helped her heal but also provided her with tools she is going to use during this pregnancy.  This episode is for you to listen to if you are in your waiting season and want inspiration on hearing a success story and journey.  This is also for you to listen to if you are interested in becoming a Doula and removing whats holding you back from serving others as God has called you to do. Patrick speaks with Elijah from Lexington about a fascinating and deep topic: the beginning of human life and the concept of ensoulment. He discusses different beliefs, including a rabbinic view that the soul enters the body after 40 days. Patrick shares his perspective, grounded in the idea that life begins at conception, where body and soul come into existence simultaneously. It's a powerful conversation about faith, science, and morality.   Alfredo - Harris Persecuted David Daleiden when he was showing the videos exposing Planned Parenthood's abortion procedures. Patrick Madrid welcomes John from New Jersey, a dedicated pro-lifer with a pressing question on a tricky topic: ectopic pregnancies. John has heard conflicting advice on whether it's morally permissible to end an ectopic pregnancy to save the mother's life. He wants to know what the Catholic Church teaches.   Patrick's Breakdown:   Understanding Ectopic Pregnancies:   An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. This condition is life-threatening for both the mother and the baby and is a heartbreaking situation.   Church's Teaching - The Principle of Double Effect:   The principle of double effect is crucial here. It allows for an action that has both a positive effect (saving the mother's life) and a negative effect (the unintended death of the child), provided the negative effect is not the intended outcome.   Three Foundations of a Moral Act:   Object of the Act: The act itself, such as removing the damaged fallopian tube, is not inherently immoral.   Intention: The intention behind the act is to save the mother's life, not to kill the child.   Circumstances: The context is that without intervention, both the mother and child would die.   Key Distinction:   Directly killing the child to save the mother is always immoral. The Church would never allow this.    However, removing the fallopian tube (even though the child cannot survive this procedure) is morally permissible because the primary intent is to save the mother's life, not to end the child's.   Takeaway: The Catholic Church's teaching on ectopic pregnancies hinges on the principle of double effect, ensuring that actions taken are morally sound, focusing on saving lives without intending harm.

*Just a little trigger warning, this episode mentions miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. If today is a day you're not feeling too strong, perhaps leave this episode for another day. We have a HUGE back catalog to dive into, so there may be something else you fancy instead. *Joining Kate on The Fertility Podcast this week is Jade. In this episode, Jade talks about her traumatic and life-changing experiences with ectopic pregnancy. For those who don't know, an ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that is outside of the uterus. Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy isn't viable and is not able to continue. Jade's story begins back in January 2022, when she first became pregnant. Unfortunately, this first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Later on, Jade fell pregnant again, however, this time, it was an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies can cause pain and in some circumstances, bleeding, however, Jade didn't have any symptoms. It wasn't until after a few trips to the doctor, that she was told she had an ectopic pregnancy. Jade eventually had surgery to remove the ectopic pregnancy. She was advised by her doctor that she had an increased risk of having another ectopic, and unfortunately, this happened to Jade again in 2023. However, this time around, Jade knew something was wrong. Jade talks about how hard it was to advocate for herself. Regrettably, this pregnancy ruptured her fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy is a serious medical condition which can become a medical emergency. Jade talks about how her experiences have left both her and her body scarred. She explains she is scared to get pregnant and risk going through it all again. However Jade is a fabulous example of the importance of being your own fertility advocate and being persistent if you think something is wrong. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Cindy: I have used your Daily Level 3 protocal for a few years now, but I only use half of the multi vitamin (due to cost) because I share it with my teenage son. I do purchase additional omega 3 so that I get 2 grams daily and use 1 capsule of your B complex daily. I love your magnesium drink, healthy gut support, collagen, and thyroid support. I would like to use the mitochondrial and hormone support too! My genes do have 2 copies of the MTHFR gene mutation and I am postmenopausal. Oh, and I use about 20,000 I.U. of your Vit. D daily inorder to keep my level above 50. I can't take every supplement I would like, but how do I prioritize? If I took the full dose of all of these, would I get too much or waist vitamins?   Cindy: Do you think a microbiom could get "use to" a probiotic and therefore not work as well? A few years ago when I started taking your probiotic, it immediately helped be to have a BM daily. That doesn't happen anymore. 2 BM weekly is now the norm again. Amy ideas besides adding Magnesium citrate? (which I have started doing) Thanks for all you do   Barjan: Dr. Cabral, Thank you very much for the service that you offer to help people all around the world. It's truly incredible! I have lot of trust in your knowledge, so I would like to ask about natural multivitamins made by process of saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation. I had an IgG food intolerance test done several years ago when I visited the US, where there was low reactivity (yellow) to bakers and brewers yeast and high reactivity (red) to Candida albicans. Do you think that fermented multivitamins can cause some inflammation for me in the long run, even though the yeast is no longer living in the final product? There are no functional medicine supplements available where I live, the only alternative is one US based organic fermented multivitamin. Please advise, thank you. Bajran   Marina: Hi Dr Cabral, Since ectopic beats are caused by electrical disturbances in the heart, is it same to use touch therapy devices such as Apollo etc   Jessica: Hello, There is quite a lot of videos on thyroid health but I am specifically wanting to know about reversing Thyroid nodules. Tests show that my thyroid is functioning fine however I have 5 nodules that have been tested. They are benign. How can I reverse or eliminate my nodules? I am already on a GF and dairy free diet. I don't drink or smoke. I certainly need to exercise more and I have looked at supplementation: selenium, Vit D and Iodine. Very much appreciated! Jessica   Joey: Hello Dr.Cabral. Can you please explain the difference between liposomal vs methylated vitamins? Some manufacturers claim that liposomal technology is superior to all other, because of its way to get inside cells. Is liposomal delivery truly superior. Please explain how it works. Ectopic pregnancies may be rare, but given how devastating and dangerous they can be, taking steps to prevent them is never a bad idea! For those worried about ectopic pregnancies, remember they generally amount to only 1-2 percent of pregnancies. For those who have had an ectopic pregnancy, that number may go up to 10 percent, but it's still unlikely. That said, it's understandable that those seeking to be pregnant want to ensure the safest, healthiest, and most viable pregnancy. Guest Dr. Amy Criniti suggests taking a look via tubal imaging, called an HSG. This procedure can give the doctor an idea of the status of the fallopian tube. Listen to our previous episode on uterine/tubal evaluation for more details:  Snack 6: The Camera Goes Where? Assessing the Uterus and Tubes  Additionally, an ultrasound can tell you which side you're going to ovulate on, so you can aim for trying to get pregnant when the egg is traveling on the side with a functioning, healthy fallopian tube. Patients may also opt for IVF, which has a lower (but still not zero) chance of resulting in an ectopic pregnancy. Quick quiz: True or False: ovulation switches sides each month, so if it's the left fallopian tube in January, it'll be the right one in February.  True or False: smokers have a higher chance of ectopic pregnancy. True or False: if you've had an ectopic pregnancy, there's nothing doctors can do to decrease the risk next time. True or False: a fallopian tube can be repaired and returned to full function after an ectopic pregnancy. True or False: having your “tubes tied” for contraception is an easy surgery to reverse. In this episode, Ruby and Anne talk with Dr. Amy Criniti, another member of the Seattle Reproductive Medicine team, about some of the questions (and myths) out there about ectopic pregnancies.  Why are they so dangerous? If not caught early, the embryo can grow inside the tube. Unlike the uterus, the fallopian tubes aren't meant to stretch to accommodate a growing embryo. Eventually, the tube will rupture and cause internal bleeding. Left untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can endanger the life of the pregnant person. Can an ectopic pregnancy be “relocated”? Despite wishful thinking among some non-medical persons, no. An ectopic pregnancy, once disrupted, cannot reimplant elsewhere. Does a “pregnancy of unknown location” always mean an ectopic pregnancy? Not necessarily, says Dr. Criniti; sometimes blood work can indicate there's a pregnancy, but it's not yet visible on an ultrasound. If the embryo can't be located, the patient will be closely monitored until they're sure the fertilized egg has implanted where it should. How does an “implanted” pregnancy (like IVF) end up in the wrong place? We don't entirely understand how the fertilized egg moves around before implantation, and short of attaching a tiny Go Pro, we may never know. But even an “implanted” pregnancy can move before attaching, though like ectopic pregnancies generally, the risk is pretty low. In this age of conflict over reproduction, it's important to know about the risks of ectopic pregnancy and what your choices are if you find yourself in that 1-2 percent.  More about Dr. Criniti: Dr. Criniti joined the medical team of SRM in 2006. Her clinical interests include fertility assessment, PCOS, age-related infertility, as well as the entire spectrum of fertility treatment. She currently teaches University of Washington medical students and is the Medical Director of the donor egg team. Historically, IUDs where considered contraindicated in a patient with a prior ectopic pregnancy. This was due to concerns that IUDs may be causative of tubal gestations. Is this true? Are IUDs contraindicated with a past history of ectopic pregnancy? In this episode we will review the data from the CHOICE project, the CDC (US), and the Royal College of OBGYN (UK). We will also summarize key findings from a May 2022 Green Journal publication that investigated this very issue, and we will explain why some IUSs may be MORE protective (52mg vs 13.5mg) against ectopic than others (Thank you Jessica W. for this timely and clinically relevant podcast topic suggestion).

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Simon: Hi Dr Cabral, I have a quick question on sugar vs non-caloric sweeteners such as xylitol, erythritol and mannitol. I mostly eat a very healthy Mediterranean diet however sweets are my guilty pleasure! I try not too eat too much sugar and avoid artificial sweeteners at all cost, so lately I've been buying some ice cream and chocolate sweetened with xylitol and erythritol assuming this would be 'better for me', but deep down I'm wondering whether a bit of sugar would actually be better than these additives. I've listened to your podcasts on natural non-nutritive sweeteners but never heard you directly compare them to sugar and say which would be a healthier choice. For context I'm fit and healthy with good insulin sensitivity but have suffered from IBS-D in the past. Thanks!   Luke: I have been through quite a lot, from going to the gym 6 days a week, eating relatively balanced, happy and healthy individual to one day January 2nd 2021, massive panic attack I thought i was going to die. 2 weeks later, Fibromyalgia symptoms, then Chronic Fatigue, then burning sensations all over my body, then balance issues, then brain fog got so bad I didn't even recognize who I was. I ended up with 30 plus chronic symptoms.  I found functional medicine and I have healed 20 of the 30 symptoms I was experiencing but some still remain. I am a strong believer that EBV was the main cause for all of this. My remaining symptoms are (new symptom) very warm sensation, feels like someone poured warm milk down the left side of my leg, calf mainly but also my arm and sometimes my head. ER said these warm sensations are nothing to worry about and go home. Ectopic beats, could this be EBV or the parasite, I did a 6 month parasite protocol Still have Blastocystis hominis. But because I got 80% better, was it really ever the parasite as a lot of people I spoke to said it is super bad. But I could never get rid of it with taking very targeted supplements like everything in your parasite protocol and also a 10 day course of a compounded anti parasitic antibiotic.  I feel my heart beat generally all over my body, very heavy at times especially when I do something active, I think the main issue is that I can feel it. I've been through 2 cardioligist and they say everything is normal and fine and benign ectopics. This is the main issue I want to get rid of.  Still fatigue and bodily sensations remain too.  I WAS 80 percent better, but now about 50% better.  Surely after 12 months of clean eating, protocols left right and centre, targeted supplements to go along with my results, I would be feeling the needle move forward and not backwards.  What am I missing here? Thank you Dr Cabral   Joy: Hello Dr Cabral, my question/concern is related to pancreatic insufficiency. After years of being treated for CBO then SIBO, plus ongoing treatment for past trauma and still no improvement, actually feeling worse with more bloating and gas my gastroenterologist did more stool testing. The results showed pancreatic insufficiency. I am told the only way to treat this is by taking the prescription digestive enzymes. I was also told just take the enzymes and I'll be fine, that I should be able to eat what I want. I have been taking the enzymes for over a month now and still experiencing bloating and gas, although much better than before taking them. Are taking the enzymes the only answer? There must be other things I can do I support my system? Thank you for your help! Thank you for all you do!   Joan: Hi Dr. Cabral, I'm addicted to your podcasts. :) Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us for free!! My question: I know you said something to the effect that anything that's wrong with the body can be fixed or reversed, but does that pertain to mental issues as well? I'm 57 and have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I've been taking SSRIs for 30 years. I'm worried that there will be poor long-term side effects. I'm also afraid to wean off them because I've tried that and it wasn't pretty. Thank you for your help! Joan   Thomas: What would you do about a high AG ratio? My Albumin has been high for two years in a row, and this year my globalin level got closer to the bottom of the range triggering a high A/G ratio. I do the quarterly Dr. Cabral detox and typically add in the blueberries and sweet potatoes day 3 since I'm apt to losing weight. Today we're joined by Alexandra DeSanctis, pro-life writer for National Review and co-author of "Tearing us Apart: How Abortion Harms Everything and Solves Nothing." Her recent article went in-depth on abortion laws at the state level, where she made clear that no law prohibits doctors from treating women with ectopic pregnancies. We discuss whether abortions and miscarriages are really treated differently, what happened with the recent Kansas abortion ballot measure, and how documented stories of abortion can reveal the true horrors of the procedure. Then, we talk about how her new book gives the pro-life movement the best evidence and support possible to argue their case in post-Roe America. --- Today's Sponsors: HealthyCell — get 20% off your first order at HealthyCell.com/ALLIE, use promo code 'ALLIE'! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Michael: Hi Stephen, hope you are keeping well. I'm an Addison's disease patient since July 2021 after a long few months trying to get a diagnosis - brain fog, weight loss, anxiety and panic attacks, adrenal crisis and OCD. I'm hearing a lot about different diets for autoimmune diseases and wondering your thoughts on cutting out gluten sugar and dairy to help. Currently taking hydro and fludrocortisone daily. Also in terms of vitamins what should I be taking daily just need some help getting my life back on track. Also I've had covid twice which def didn't help with addisons. Recently came across your podcast on adrenal fatigue and heard you have addisons as well. The thought of being on these heavy meds for life is kind of scary. I had all the symptoms you had and would love your opinion. Thanks Michael   Rachel: Hi there, Just wondering if you could do a podcast on your recommendations for children and supplements. I'd like to find out if it's necessary to provide children with Multivitamins and/or what supplements you suggest they take in conjunction with a balanced diet. Thank you.   Nicole: Hi Dr. Cabral. I have a question about my ectopic heartbeats. I've been battling chronic fatigue, stress, and gut issues for a few yrs now after having tragedy after tragedy in my family happen. Anyway I did do the oat test and HTMA as well as food sensitivity test and have a plan going forward to heal and seal my gut. However one very mysterious symptom I've been having ( out of a few actually) is that I get ectopic heartbeats all the time! Not just a few but hundreds a day. I did a heart ultrasound as well as 24 hr heart monitor and they found nearly 2500 pvc and pacs in a 24 hour period. These tend to happen during early morning and in the late afternoon into the evenings. They have gone away for weeks at a time entirely only to return once again for weeks- months. My cardiologist says they are benign and that its just anxiety. Wjat are your thoughts. I don't feel like I'm an anxious person although I do know with my ongoing health challenges and emotional stresses in the past this could have played a role to some degree. My thyroid panel is optimal at 30mg armour thyroid no no more antibodies present. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.   Sarah: Is it possible to completely get rid of thyroid antibodies? Mine has hovered around 300 for years and deciding if damage is done and should just go on thyroid med instead of chasing full reversal! Thankful for people like you putting in the time to help the world!   Courtney: Hello! Your story resonated with me as my 5 year old daughter has been on a daily 6ml antibiotic the last 2 years for recurring UTI's due to holding and reflux to the kidneys. Doctors believe she will grow out of it. I'm very concerned that the daily nitrofurantoin is ruining her gut flora and what this will mean for her future health. Even with the daily antibiotic she will have a UTI once every 3 months and will be on a full 10 day course of another antibiotic (keflex or Bactrum). She will be starting biofeedback when she is 6 (October). We give her a daily probiotic: Jarrow YumYum dophilius. What more can we do to help her break this cycle, get her off a daily antibiotic and get her gut health back? Thank you so much! Courtney   Rita: Hi! I've attempted the CBO protocol twice but can never seem to follow through properly all the way to 12 weeks. The problem is that I own a bakery and am always tasting our products for quality a few times a month, especially when we're creating new flavors. My bakery business truly brings me and my customers joy and fulfillment, so quitting that is currently not an option. I've taken the food sensitivity test and am highly sensitive to gluten, dairy and eggs. I don't need to have entire servings of our pastries but I'm wondering if this will affect the effectiveness of the CBO protocol during and after the process. I know I desperately need to rebalance my gut but don't know how to balance this with my livelihood. Please help! Thank you so much.   Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!      - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2339 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept?
