The murder of crime activist and whistleblower Pamela Mabini, who was shot and killed in the driveway of her home in Gqeberha, has rekindled calls to address the plight of whistle-blowers who dare to report crime as well as the insuffIciency of measures to protect them. This has also brought the conversation on the Whistleblowers Protection Bill to the forefront once again. In 2021 , the murder of whistle-blower Babita Deokaran was an indication of how unprotected whistle-blowers are even though policies and safeguards for whistleblowers are available. In his State of the Nation Address last month, President Ramaphosa announced plans to finalise a comprehensive whistleblower protection framework with the Whistleblower Protections Bill. To look at whether this is a step toward better protections for whistleblowers , Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Sentebale Makara, Director for Dispute Resolution at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr
The salient point of this podcast episode revolves around the critical examination of the concept of virtual church within the apologetics community. We assert that the practice of attending virtual church cannot replace the fundamental need for physical gathering among believers, as outlined in biblical teachings. The discussion delves into the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on church attendance, highlighting how many individuals erroneously believe that participating in church services online suffices for genuine fellowship and worship. We further explore the necessity of accountability, communal worship, and the ordinances of the church, which cannot be effectively realized in a virtual setting. Ultimately, we contend that the essence of the church lies in the physical assembly of believers, where the richness of community and the fullness of worship can be experienced.Takeaways: The podcast emphasizes the necessity of attending physical church, especially in light of the challenges faced by the apologetics community post-COVID. It is argued that virtual church cannot replace the communal and accountability aspects of a physical gathering of believers. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding the true nature of church as defined by Scripture, which is centered on corporate worship and fellowship. Listeners are encouraged to recognize that merely participating in virtual church does not equate to being part of a local church community. The hosts stress that while virtual interactions can support fellowship, they are not substitutes for the physical gathering of believers. The episode concludes with a call to action, urging individuals to engage actively in their local church and to seek genuine community with other believers. Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories
Have you heard of the term cervical insufficiency? Cervical insufficiency is the inability of the cervix to retain the fetus, in the absence of uterine contractions or labor (painless cervical dilatation), owing to a functional or structural defect. It is cervical ripening that occurs far from the term. Today's guest experienced an insufficient cervix and lost her baby boy Jayden at 17 weeks gestation. Oneisha Perrotte-Lewis booked her ultrasound for my gender reveal and went to the hospital for a second opinion after noticing a handful amount of blood and a specific pain that she knew wasn't average cramps. Her OBGYN would not listen to her when she let him know numerous times that she was experiencing a lot of pain but he told her that the pain I was experiencing was normal. She knew in her heart that it wasn't normal. She was actually in pre-term labor and having contractions the entire time. In this episode Oneisha shares what happened after she birthed Jayden, how his birth inspired her to become a bereavement doula and start the Little Bean Foundation. Her foundation meant to bring awareness to all types of pregnancy and infant loss, to educate women and men about their bodies, to provide the necessary support as a Bereavement Doula and advocate for future safe, successful and healthier pregnancies. Agricultural Economist Prof. Edward Ebo Onumah says Ghana must diversify its agricultural focus beyond cocoa to enhance economic support. The Associate Professor highlighted that the current budgetary allocation to agriculture is insufficient, given its critical role in the economy. Prof. Onumah stated that increasing the agricultural budget from the current 7-8% to at least 10% is crucial for significant progress.
Dr. Jacob Fleming and Dr. Douglas Beall discuss the challenges and advancements in treating sacral insufficiency fractures (SIF), the importance of real-world data in evaluating treatment efficacy, and the need to increase awareness of sacral fractures and sacroplasty. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR Stryker Interventional Spine https://www.strykerivs.com --- SYNPOSIS Dr. Beall emphasizes the underrecognition and undertreatment of sacral insufficiency fractures, pointing out the high mortality and chronic pain rates associated with non-treatment. He urges providers to consider this diagnosis, especially if the patient is describing symptoms of pain with position changes with standing, sitting, and laying, has pubic rami fractures, or reports a history of pelvic radiation. Even with imaging, the diagnosis can remain elusive, since it is not commonly recognized on x-ray and may not show obvious cortical disruption on CT or MRI. We also review the current literature on sacroplasty efficacy in lowering patient-reported pain scores and adverse events associated with treatment versus conservative management. This week I welcomed Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD on my show to talk about the power of nutrient density through the lens of her new book, Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat. Nutrivore is the revolutionary yet simple dietary concept: get all the nutrients our bodies need from the foods we eat. To Dr. Sarah, Nutrivore represents a completely new way to think about foods. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad”, Nutrivore looks at the overall quality of the whole diet. In our conversation, we explore the fascinating Nutrivore scores and how they serve as a compass for optimizing our food choices and meal planning. Dr. Sarah shares insights from her transition from medical research to health advocacy, underlining the importance of nutrient density, debunking dietary myths, and proposing a balanced, informed way of living. Additionally, she unveils a surprising, evidence-based update on mercury levels in tuna and Atlantic salmon. Todd Miller, Will Seele, and Ryan Ripley discuss Agile's internal (organizational) focus and the gap left by not addressing the Value component of Product Management and delivery. In this Episode: Internal Focus of Agile: The discussion, led by Todd Miller and Ryan Ripley, challenges the common perception of Agile as customer-centric and value-oriented, proposing instead that Agile is predominantly focused on internal processes and organizational matters rather than directly benefiting customers. Agile Manifesto Analysis: The Agile Manifesto and its principles, when examined, emphasize team interactions, working software, and adapting to change but lack explicit directives that prioritize customer value or tangible benefits for the customer. Evolution and Additions to Agile: Over time, various frameworks like Scrum, XP, Kanban, and others have evolved under the umbrella of Agile, incorporating aspects like customer centricity and iterative development. However, these are seen as additions to the core Agile philosophy, which remains internally focused. Evidence-Based Management Connection: The conversation transitions to evidence-based management and its potential integration with Agile. This approach aims to complement Agile by introducing a more outward, value-driven focus, assessing Agile's impact on customers and market performance. Insufficiency of Agile Alone: The presenters conclude that while Agile methodologies are crucial, they are insufficient to ensure organizational success. They stress the need to balance Agile's internal process focus and external value delivery, advocating for a continuous evaluation of Agile's effectiveness and alignment with strategic goals.
Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) is a condition caused by damage to the pancreas that results in reduced capability to produce or deliver digestive enzymes which break down fats, carbohydrates or proteins — or to a decrease in the enzyme activity in the small intestine. EPI is most commonly associated with chronic pancreatitis (in adults), cystic fibrosis (in children), diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) and other etiologies such as acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer or resection, celiac and Crohn's disease. Consequently, individuals with EPI may suffer malnutrition and fat-soluble vitamin deficiency; loss of bone mass; growth and immune deficiencies; and may experience poorer outcomes such as longer hospital stays and lower survival rates of underlying medical conditions secondary to malnutrition. Listen to guests Kimberly Kearns MS, APRN, ANP-BC and Amy Stewart FNP-C discuss EPI on this episode of the official podcast of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP), NP Pulse: The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner® Additionally, two new tools are also available on AANP's Tools and Resources page in both the Gastroenterology and in the Pulmonology and Respiratory therapeutic areas: Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy (PERT) – Patient Guide to diet and lifestyle modifications, and to the self-administration of PERTs to help reduce symptoms including gas, bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea caused by undigested food in the gut. Diagnosing and Managing Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) – Provider Resource including evaluation of symptoms and common high-risk conditions, diagnostic testing and management goals combining diet, lifestyle and therapies to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
