In Episode 1, guests Shelley Levisay and Amy Kingry talk about State of Oklahoma v. Julius Darius Jones. On the evening of July 28, 1999, Jones, armed with a .25 caliber pistol, carjacked and shot Paul Howell in the driveway of his parents' Edmond, Oklahoma home. His sister and daughters were lucky to escape the carjacking unharmed. In spite of the overwhelming evidence presented at trial establishing Jones' guilt and post-conviction DNA testing that identified Julius Jones as the person wearing the red bandana described by several witnesses, the Viola Davis-produced The Last Defense in 2018 fueled a media campaign of misinformation that characterized Jones' guilt as in doubt. In spite of Jones' extensive prison disciplinary record, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board broke its own rules, holding two hearings and recommending commutation and clemency for Jones. On November 18, 2021, Governor Kevin Stitt commuted Jones' sentence to life without the possibility of parole. Shelley Levisay is a criminal defense attorney and owner of Levisay & Associates, an author and podcaster from Shawnee, Oklahoma. She went to the University of Oklahoma College of Law, was Order of Barristers and a Note Editor for the American Indian Law Review. In May, 2022, she will graduate with an LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples. Amy Kingry has been a paralegal in Oklahoma City for 21 years. She was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma and began helping victims of violent crime as a result of the misinformation of The Last Defense and the resulting media campaign. Amy co-founded Oklahoma Victims Innocence Project. OKVIP is a community organization dedicated to supporting victims/survivors of violent crime as they navigate the post-conviction process. Amy's hope is to let victims of violent crimes know that they still have a voice to speak the truth, no matter how much their voices shake. She's also a cross-fit enthusiast and, with her significant other, fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and OKC Thunder. Amy is also the proud mom of 5 children and bonus mom to 3 step-children, so there's never a dull moment in her life.
On July 28th, 1999, Julius Jones was playing monopoly with his family and soon to be a sophomore on an academic scholarship at the University of Oklahoma. That night, a man named Paul Howell was shot for his GMC Suburban in the nearby suburb of Edmund, Oklahoma. A few days later, Julius was taken into police custody even though the eyewitness description should have excluded him as a suspect. 3 witnesses (and counting) have come forward with sworn affidavits claiming that Julius' former friend and co-defendant Chris Jordan has often taken sole responsibility for Paul Howell's murder. Julius' attorney Dale Baich, his mother and sister, Madeline and Antoinette Jones, as well as special guest Kim Kardashian join Jason Flom to discuss Julius' case and the race to right this wrong. Since our initial release, Julius death sentence was commuted to life without parole along with some dire stipulations. Julius Jones was sitting on death row for the shooting death of 45 year old Paul Howell in Edmund, Oklahoma, but has maintained his innocence and claims he was framed for the murder. At the time of his execution he garnered supporters at an astonishing rate. And clemency was granted at the last minute. But were these people supporting an innocent man or a violent criminal? In 2002, Julius Jones was wrongfully convicted of murdering Paul Howell. Last week, on the day of his scheduled execution for a crime he did not commit, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt commuted the death sentence just four hours before he was set to die. It is a victory that Julius's life has been saved, but now the work continues to free him from prison. Pastor Mike McBride, Founder of Live Free USA and the Black Church PAC, played a large part in fighting for Julius's life alongside other faith leaders, and he walks us back through the racism that led to Julius's incarceration, the racism of the death penalty itself, and the juxtaposition of faith leaders assisting in Julius's commutation while simultaneously being scrutinized in the trial of the men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery. In July 1999, Paul Howell was murdered in front of his sister and two young daughters during a carjacking. When police tracked the vehicle, it led them to a gang affiliate who pointed a finger at the shooter. After a trial tainted with racial bias, under-resourced defense attorneys, and a prosecutor hell-bent on securing an execution, the defendant was sentenced to death. In 1999, in the Oklahoma suburb of Edmond, local businessman Paul Howell took his two daughters shopping for school supplies and then to the Braum's dairy for ice cream. The family didn't realize it at the time, but as they left the Braum's parking lot they were followed by two men in an Oldsmobile Cutlass. When Paul arrived at his parent's home, one of the men got out of the car, walked to the driver's side of Paul's Suburban and shot him in the head killing him instantly (a little after 9:30 pm). Paul's sister, Megan Toby, quickly grabbed the children and rushed them into the house. As she did, she saw the man drive off in Paul's Suburban, running over her brother's body as he fled the scene. It didn't take long for investigators to single in on a local car thief named Julius Jones. Inside his home, police found the murder weapon and clothing that matched the shooter's description. The evidence looked overwhelming, and the jury agreed. Jones was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of Paul Howell. Since then, however, many have come to question Jones's involvement. A movement has formed, led by lawyers, activists, and celebrities, to free Jones from prison. Tonight, we'll discuss the murder of Paul Howell and whether the right man is behind bars.

This week Sam talks about the case of Julius Jones. Many of y'all know Julius Jones was granted clemency this month in Oklahoma. However do you know all the facts of his case and how Paul Howell was actually killed? Which eventually led to Julius being convicted of first degree murder and going on death row. Buckle in, this will be an episode you don't want to miss! Sources : Justiceforpaulhowell.com - The last defense documentary
In this episode I will go through and do my best to discuss the ins and outs of Julius Jones narrowly escaping death row and the murder of Paul Howell. There is a lot of information and theories that go into this one. Because Jones claims that not all evidence was included in his original trial, mainly his alibi, its hard to go back 20+ years to tie it all together. I believe his best defense at this point is a corrupt DA and a tainted jury. There are multiple stories that play out in this case and some of them are happening simultaneously and that is another reason I believe this is a hard one. It kind of makes it difficult to follow along but I think it is a story that need to be told. On death row for 20 years, Julius Jones's life was spared just hours before set to be executed in an Oklahoma prison. Jones was a 19-year-old college student when he became the primary suspect for the killing of an Oklahoma businessman, Paul Howell. Despite lingering questions of Jones's guilt, he has remained on death row. But now with his sentence commuted, he will no longer be executed, but will still spend his life in prison. Oklahoma's 6-year, self-imposed moratorium on execution ended this February when the state announced it would proceed with scheduling 7 executions. Julius Jones waits next in line for lethal injection — a process the state has botched multiple times — for a crime he maintains he didn't commit. News editor Jonathan Kyncl explains Oklahoma's history with capital punishment and breaks down the fights for the life of Julius Jones and justice for Paul Howell.

Devon Tracey returns to the podcast to talk about Paul Howell's killer, Julius Jones. Jones murdered Howell in front of his young daughters and sister during a carjacking on July 28, 1999. Jones was convicted in 2002 and sentenced to death. Celebrities have joined forces with the Innocence Project, ACLU and other ideologically aligned groups to "Free Julius". This month, the Oklahoma Pardons and Parole board voted 3-1 to commute Jones' sentence to Life with the Possibility of Parole. Gov. Stitt announced yesterday that he will ignore the board's recommendation and hear all arguments for and against pardon or commutation at Jones' clemency hearing. Jones is set to be executed Nov. 18th 2021. Labor Unions Divided Over Vaccine Mandate The Takeaway turns to Steven Greenhouse, former New York Times labor reporter and the author of “Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present and Future of American Labor,” to talk us through these divisions in labor unions. We also speak with Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, about the division on vaccine mandates that she's seeing among teachers unions across the country. Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board Recommends Commutation for Julius Jones On Monday, the Oklahoma parole and pardon board heard the commutation hearing of Julius Jones. In a 3-1 vote the board recommended commuting Jones' death sentence to life with the possibility of parole. Jones, who was convicted of the 1999 killing of Paul Howell continues to maintain his innocence. The final decision now goes to Governor Kevin Stitt. Joining us to discuss the long road to this recent decision is Daniel Forkkio, CEO of Represent Justice, an organization that uses the power of the media to engage audiences in reimagining the justice system, and creating real demand for change. Black Homebuyers Are Being Left Out of Pandemic Housing Boom During the pandemic, there's been a massive real estate boom in the U.S., as many people looked to leave crowded cities like New York City for the suburbs. But for Black Americans, the boom has been more like a bust, as they've been priced out of this pandemic-fueled housing frenzy. Housing inequity is nothing new in this country; there's a deep history of discrimination in the housing market against Black Americans. For more on this, The Takeaway spoke to Anne Price, president of the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and author of Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership. A few days later, Julius was awakened and dragged out of bed, barefoot and shirtless, and taken into police custody as a murder suspect even though the eyewitness description should have excluded him as a suspect. 3 witnesses (and counting) have come forward with sworn affidavits claiming that Julius' former friend and co-defendant Chris Jordan has often taken responsibility for Paul Howell's murder - while Julius awaits lethal injection. Julius' attorney Dale Baich, his mother and sister, Madeline and Antoinette Jones, as well as special guest Kim Kardashian join Jason Flom to discuss Julius' case and the race to right this wrong before it's too late. When most people decide to lose weight one of the first things they do is go for a run. It makes sense because running and cardio activities in general are thought to burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time. However, there is more nuance to it than simply running to burn calories so that you can watch the fat melt from your body. Creator of The Sling Method and run coach Paul Howell joins us to explain the right and wrong way to use running for weight loss.
PART 2 - Listen to Episode 24 first. Zach and Stacey take an in-depth look at Oklahoma vs. Julius Jones. Below, you can read an overview of Julius' case as stated on justiceforjuliusjones.com: "Julius is on death row despite maintaining his innocence and compelling evidence that he was wrongfully convicted. Julius' co-defendant fit an eyewitness's description of the shooter, while Julius did not. His co-defendant was the state's key witness against him, and the prosecution repeatedly told jurors at Julius' trial that his co-defendant would serve a 30-year sentence in exchange for his testimony. However, after pleading guilty to the crime, Julius' co-defendant was released after only 15 years and is now a free man. In a case riddled with odious racial discrimination — including a police officer's use of a racial slur during Julius' arrest and the State's removal of all prospective black jurors except one —evidence shows that a juror used the n-word before jury deliberations at the sentencing phase." The prime minister also had to contend with a Tory Brexit rebellion and more resignations from his government. Is Johnson losing control of the two biggest issues of our times? Tory MP Paul Howell joined Arj Singh, Paul Waugh and Rachel Wearmouth to make sense of the week in Westminster, and look ahead to the imminent Budget and what it could mean for left behind communities. Make sense of politics. Sign up to the Waugh Zone (https://news.huffingtonpost.com/h/t/1925256938B41841) and get the political day in a nutshell every weekday evening.
With less than 10 minutes before we recorded, a decision was made to change our Mt. Rushmore segment. Thankfully we were able to put together a solid top 4 considering the original topic was giving us too much trouble to put together a solid segment. We also talk about a list that ranked the top 60 sports based of difficulty. Toddy has a huge issue with this list and doesn't hold back on certain sports being ahead of two particular sports. Todd gets us back to doing the Tiger Woods Stat of the Day after waking up to protesters in his front yard this morning demanding we bring it back! Most importantly we have the second half of our interview with Paul Howell. Big Announcement for upcoming guest that we will record with on Saturday and we also decide on how to do episode 19 with a few fans! Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thesidelinejunkies/support

He shares some stories about the other guys on the tour and what the future holds for the tour. The episode is so good we actually cut it in half so we can share even more on Monday's episode 18. Toddy once again turns his Tiger Woods Stat of the Day into the Paul Howell Stat of the Day in honor of our guest. THIS STAT IS INSANE so you don't want to miss out on it! To start the show the guys do their Mt. Rushmore Segment and today's topic is professional wrestlers. They also share dad jokes which caused Matt to cry from laughter.
