The early use of supplemental screening for women with dense breasts cannot be overstated. It is paramount for early detection of breast cancer in these women, which in turn is key to survival. Dr. Paula Gordon, recipient of the Order of Canada, and one of the greatest Canadian specialists in breast cancer detection and diagnosis, is a powerful voice in this arena. You need to hear what she has to say. First, women need to know if they have dense breasts! Second, early diagnosis can lessen aggressive therapy or even eliminate the need for some treatments. However, it may surprise you that, not only are women not told their breast density, but secondary screening is also not as accessible as you might think. Change is necessary, and your voice can make a difference. Every woman should have the choice to self advocate for access to early screening modalities. Fashion journalist Jeanne Beker has been in the public eye for more than 50 years, most notably as a globetrotting reporter interviewing some of the world's highest-profile designers and models, as well as entertainers the likes of Paul McCartney and Bob Hope. But for the last year, Beker, now 71, has turned the camera on her own story—as a breast cancer patient. She's been extremely public about her diagnosis, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and surgery. And now, she's advocating for better (and earlier) screening for women with dense breasts. Two weeks ago, Beker completed her year of cancer treatments at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. But that challenge hasn't stopped her from starting to write a new book, hosting her Style Matters television show and making countless appearances at fundraisers for breast cancer and other good causes. Beker joins The CJN Daily to discuss where she got her determination and how she's found a renewed gratitude for life. Dr. Paula Gordon, of Vancouver, is a renowned Canadian radiologist and breast cancer specialist. She also recently became a recipient of the Order of Canada for her pioneering research into using ultrasound to detect hard-to-spot breast cancers. But that was decades ago. Now, Gordon—a professor at the University of British Columbia's medical school—is campaigning for expanded screening for breast cancer, starting much younger and more often. Gordon is calling for mammograms to be offered beginning at age 40. Currently, most provinces offer routine screening only at age 50, due to what Gordon calls outdated federal health guidelines. She's also advocating for mammograms to be done annually, not every couple of years, especially for those women at greater risk of developing breast cancer: Ashkenazi women, and women with so-called "dense breasts". Gordon joins The CJN Daily on International Women's Day to explain why changing these federal breast cancer screening guidelines will save lives. What we talked about: Read more about the risk of dense breasts at densebreastscanada.ca Why Ashkenazi Jewish women (and men) are at higher risk of breast cancer_ _in The CJN Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). Ep 425 - Is Breast Cancer Research Flawed? Guest: Paula Gordon By Stuart McNish If you are a woman in your 40s, don't worry about a mammogram. At least that's what Canadian research has been saying since the 1980s. Dr. Paula Gordon, a renowned radiology researcher and clinical professor at the University of British Columbia, says, “The research is wrong!” In a commentary paper that was published in the Journal of Medical Screening, Gordon and colleagues point out the Canadian National Breast Screening Study classified women incorrectly. Gordon says, “Two trial groups were created – one group where women were given a mammogram and other not. The intent was to determine if a mammogram in women under 40 would reduce the likelihood of death. Here's the problem, according to Gordon: “All of the women had a breast examination before the program started. And to complicate matters, the women with existing breast lumps were placed in the study group that would receive a mammogram.” The result was that the mammogram group saw a higher mortality rate. The women were supposed to be randomly selected, but they weren't. As a result, the disproportionate death rate diminished the apparent value of a mammogram. Those results led many provincial governments to not fund nor recommend mammograms for women under 50. We invited Dr. Paula Gordon to join us for a Conversation That Matters about providing women with the best possible information about their health.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women and some experts want women to get routinely screened after they turn 40. Dr. Paula Gordon, a breast radiologist and a clinical professor in the University of British Columbia's radiology department, breaks down how often women should be screened, how to be breast aware and why knowing your breast density matters.
Radiologist and patient advocate Dr. Paula Gordon is on a mission. The former Director of the Breast Program at BC Women's Hospital is a tireless champion for improving breast cancer screening for women across Canada. In this eye-opening discussion that every woman needs to hear, she explains why early screening and detection is critical, why all women should perform breast self-exams – and how patients hold the power to change the current system.
Iran is experiencing feminist led protests after the death of a 22 year old Mahsa Amini at the hands of the so-called Morality Police. Women in Canada want to help but it's hard to know what we can do. Mehry Hadi, a Iranian-Canadian who has been fighting the regime from Canada for 24 years, joins me to share steps we can all take to ensure women's voices are heard and change happens in Iran. It's that time of year again, time to discuss the ta-tas, as Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off so Dr. Paula Gordon is here to share why all women should get to know their breasts, signs to be concerned about, and how to advocate for yourself. Anne Brodie is straight off of TIFF and exhausted but she still brings the entertainment goods this week with True Story, a comprehensive study of Indigenous history in Canada on The History Channel, Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline in The Good House, and the long awaited release of Hocus Pocus 2 starring Bette Midler, Kathy Njamy and Sarah Jessica Parker. Making friends as an adult is hard. Jessica Painter knows this first hand after moving to Canada and starting a new life here. The founder of In Her Circle, Jessica helps women find and keep new friendships and shares tips for those searching for a BFF. Everyone loves a good comeback story, but you'll really love the story of Emily O'Brien who set out on a mission to transform herself and make her time in jail as meaningful as possible. Using her entrepreneurial pre-sentence background and experience, Emily O'Brien birthed the idea for Comeback Snacks—a popcorn brand that creates unique flavours inspired by the ones Emily developed in prison. Finally Willie Poll joins me to discuss her children's book together we drum, our hearts beat as one which aims to brings awareness to the additional barriers Indigenous women and two spirit people face, as well as the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two spirit people in Canada. Please rate, review, subscribe, and share our podcast. In this week's episode, Rebecca sits down with researcher, Dr. Paula Gordon, and breast cancer survivor and Executive Director of Dense Breasts Canada, Jennie Dale, to break into the science behind breast cancer screening and the importance of early detection practices. We talk about why women with dense breasts are at higher risk for developing more severe forms of breast cancer and what can be done to keep them safe. Links to resources mentioned in this episode:Densebreastscanada.caMyBreastScreening.caDensebreast-info.orgYour comprehensive guide to breast screening in Canadahttps://mybreastscreening.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Guide-to-Screening-in-Canada.pdfFailing Canadian Women: The impacts of outdated and inconsistent breast screening practiceshttps://densebreastscanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Failing-Canadian-Women.pdfPetition linkhttps://chng.it/MCYFS7tR8z Biographies:Dr. Paula Gordon is a breast radiologist and professor at the University of British Columbia. She is also a tireless advocate for screening and ultrasound for women with dense breasts starting at age 40 -- options that are not available in most provinces. Dr. Gordon believes that too many women are denied mammograms at 40 because family doctors have not received accurate information. The work she has done in partnership with the organization Dense Breasts Canada (DBC) has been in service of getting accurate information into the hands of patients and their doctors so that women can have the best chance of catching and treating cancers early. Jennie Dale is the Executive Director of Dense Breasts Canada (DBC). She lives in Ontario. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2014. Mammogram and tomosynthesis did not detect her cancer-it was detected by ultrasound. Inspired by the successful advocacy efforts of American organizations, "areyoudense.org" and "densebreast-info.org," Jennie co-founded DBC with Michelle DiTomaso in 2017 and has teamed up with breast cancer survivors nationwide to raise awareness of the risks of dense breasts. Together, over the past four years, they have successfully advocated for changes in policy in many Canadian provinces.(C) UBC Medicine Learning Network
Ep 369 - The importance of early detection of Breast Cancer Dr Paula Gordon “I had suddenly gone from being the healthiest person I knew to having breast cancer,” said Christine Hazle during an interview for a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign produced for BC Cancer. She continues to say, “I hadn't been sick a day in my life, I'm the person who never gets a cold, never gets the flu and that was my perception of myself.” Despite her clean bill of health, she went for her mammogram. Her cancer was aggressive and so was her treatment. And then the onslaught of advice was endless – she was told to “eat only meat; no, eat only veggies; no, try this, try that.” In an Atlantic Monthly article, Caitlin Flanagan says, “Laugh and the world laughs with you; get cancer and the world can't shut its trap. Stop eating sugar; keep your weight with milkshakes. Listen to a recent story on NPR; do not read a recent story in Time magazine. Exercise – but not too vigorously; exercise – hard, like Lance Armstrong. Join a support group, make a collage, make a collage in a support group, collage the s**t out of your cancer. Be positive.” On and on, goes the advice. But that's after you are diagnosed. According to Dr Paula Gordon, one of Canada's leading experts in breast cancer detection and diagnosis, “More importantly, do not put off getting a mammogram. In fact, insist on it and do not miss an appointment.” Both Christine and Caitlin went for their mammograms. Both were diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and both survived. The reason they survived was timing – they were diagnosed early enough to increase the chances they would live. We invited Dr Paula Gordon to join us for a Conversation That Matters about everything to do with breast cancer, from prevention to detection. Vaccines are the topic of my first interview. Few issues in our society are more divisive right now than vaccinations and sadly things may only get worse now that vaccines have been approved for children. Cathryn Carruthers is a double vaxxed mom in Calgary, who along with her husband will soon face the decision to vaccinate her children. She is the founder of Families for Choice, a group comprised of vaccinated and unvaccinated families that are united on one goal, they are against vaccine mandates for children. Cathryn joins me to share the reason behind her forming this group. It's time to change out of our regular everyday stress and slip into our glittery holiday stress. With the holiday season in full swing, adding to our everyday stressors, as well as our pandemic stress, it's a good time for our latest interview on, you guessed it, stress. This week we are joined by Dr. Juliana Rosario Yeung who joins me to discuss ways to manage the stressful environment that we find ourselves in now so that it doesn't wreak havoc on our bodies later. Big thanks to New Roots Herbal for helping to keep our health top of mind in their ongoing series with What She Said. Anne Brodie has entertainment for days which includes Paolo Sorrentino's epic family saga Hand of God set in his hometown of Naples, Flee, the excellent and profound animated story of Amin, an Afghani refugee who escaped his homeland when the Mujahadeen murdered his family and HBO's original four-episode limited series Landscapers, starring Emmy-winner Olivia Colman and David Thewlis is a fascinating surrealist journey, based on a true story. On RBC's She's the Boss this week, I speak with Joella Hogan from Yukon Soaps Company. Joella joins me today to share how when you support her business, you are supporting her mission to empower and nurture an indigenous community in the Yukon, in Canada's north. Finally, If there's one thing we know for sure, it's that science and medicine are always evolving. Unfortunately, policy doesn't always keep up at the same speed. Dr. Paula Gordon, one of the world's leading and highly respected experts and advocates for breast cancer screening is joining me today to share some important new information about a decades-old Canadian study that formed the basis for mammography recommendations for women in their forties around the world. My first guest is Dr. Paula Gordon from Dense Breasts Canada, who shares details of a new report that provides insight into how outdated and inconsistent breast screening practices across Canada are resulting in confusion over how and when women should get screened, dismissal of women's concerns by healthcare practitioners, and tragic late diagnoses of breast cancer. This week on RBC's She the Boss, I speak with Leigh Joseph from Sḵwálwen, an Indigenous skincare brand that honours cultural knowledge, Indigenous plant science and self care. Leigh combines ancestral traditions with modern beauty rituals, empowering people to connect to themselves and the natural world. Anne Brodie has entertainment you don't want to miss this week including Canadian Indigenous filmmaker Danis Goulet's Night Raiders, the Wild West film Old Henry, starring Tim Black Nelson, HULU's delicious Baker's Dozen, and the highly entertaining one-off look at the dozens of bare-faced movie tropes we've endured as a society over the past 100 plus years on Netflix, called Attack of the Hollywood Cliche hosted by Rob Lowe. This week's explosive news about Facebook and Instagram has us all questioning how much division social media platforms are creating in society. Sherilynne Starkie from the Being Human is Good for Business podcast joins me to specifically discuss the issue of vaccines, and you may be surprised to hear that she thinks social media is not driving us apart on this issue. Denise Chand & Jennifer John Founders of The Sacred Space Coaching join me to share a few tips for breaking free of the rut this pandemic has placed many of us and how to embrace your life to become unstoppable. Finally, Rose Powell from Zealous Baby Care wants to ensure that everyone in the family, from baby to mom, dad and siblings, are getting the rest they need so they can all be at their best. Catherine the Great and the Small is the coming-of-age story of a Montenegrin girl, her tumultuous teen and young adult years, as she is surrounded by the even more tumultuous events unfolding in what we now know as the ex-Yugoslavia.Author Olja Knežević says, “Catherine is someone who could have been my really good friend. I could have known her growing up.”This richness and intimacy of character is perhaps what I loved best about the book. I felt like she could have been my friend too. It's perhaps a hallmark of Olja's writing: “The deeper you go, the more universal it becomes.”Translators Paula Gordon and Ellen Elias-Bursać bring Olja's energetic, emotional, even playful voice to life in English, as Ellen would describe it. What's more, Ellen and Paula illuminate place, history, politics, and culture for those of us who have little experience of the region. The clues, sprinkled within the text and elaborated on in an endnote, are insightful and add even more richness to the experience of this book. There's so much in this chat that I hope you will enjoy, about writing, translation and language, but also about expressing ourselves, being human, joy and punishment in literature and in life. And don't miss the reading in both Montenegrin and English!Thank you to Istros Books for the review copy.**Olja Knežević (pronounced Olya) was born in Montenegro, graduated from high school in California, has a BA in English Language from Belgrade University, and has an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck College, London.
