After I hung up with my mom, I found a secluded classroom in the church building and knelt down to pray. Prayer felt like a last ditch effort to save my dad. As I was praying, it was becoming more and more clear that my dad had died. I continued to plead with God to raise my dad from the dead and keep him alive.

John 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 "You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away and coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I. 29 "And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 "I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 "But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.  V26 His peace is rooted in His Word, v27 Sourced by His Person (My peace I give to you), different from that the world gives, have peace in spite of trouble, v27 Experienced by faith (Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.) Same as He started the Chapter don't have to let it if you trust Him. Ends the chapter with the same thing. Jesus started out this passage saying let not your heart be troubled and then begins to tell them what all is going to happen.  He then tells them that he is leaving and they need not be worried because He will take care of them and He will still be with them in another way. Then He finishes the section by telling them the way He will be with them is by sending the Holy Spirit who will teach them and bring to remembrance all things He said to them.  But as they are worrying about all of this still He says my peace I leave you not as the world gives peace and again don't let your heart be troubled.  He says He is their peace and that they need not worry and neither should we.  He says they should rejoice in the fact that He is leaving and going back to heaven.  Plus, He says all of this in advance so that they will know that He knew it was going to happen.  Lastly, He lets them know again for the umpteenth time that He does all of this because He is doing the Father's will.  Will we trust God no matter how hard it gets and rejoice in what He is doing in our lives through the hard times or let them stress us out?  25  "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.  26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Lu 24:49; Joh 2:22; 12:16; 14:16; 15:26; 16:7, 13; 1Jo 2:20, 27 What Jesus said in the days of His earthly ministry was only partially understood. Three things were needed for the apostles to understand Jesus' person and mission: (1) His death had to occur. (2) He had to rise again to vindicate His claim and demonstrate His victory. (3) The Spirit had to come (He would be sent by the Father … in My name, i.e., in Jesus' place and for Him) and interpret the meanings of Jesus' words and deeds. The Spirit, Jesus said, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. This verse is addressed to the apostles. The context limits the “all things” to the interpretation and significance of His person and work. The Spirit worked in their minds, reminding them of His teaching and giving them insight into its meaning (cf. 2:22; 7:39; 20:9).[i] Again, the promise of the Holy Spirit being sent is given to comfort the disciples. See note on 15:26, 27. The first emphasis was on His life-giving power (7:37–39). The next featured His indwelling presence (14:16, 17). The next marked His teaching ministry (14:26). His ministry of empowering for witness is marked in 15:26.[ii] Lu 24:1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.  5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 "He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,  7 "saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.'" 8 And they remembered His words. John 12:12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!" 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey's colt."16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. On this rests the credibility and ultimate divine authority of the Gospel history.[iii] Verbal Plenary Inspiration – Every word is given to us by God the inspiration of Scriptures extends to all sixty-six books of the Bible. Secondly, the inspiration of the Holy Spirit extends to every single word of the original manuscripts, not to just concepts or thoughts but to every single word. This is very important material to master. Quoted Text below is from one of my Bible classes; the quotes are read from time to time, to remind us of the SIGNIFICANCE of this Beautiful Bible we are so privileged to have. If not quoted, it's paraphrased. I believe my pastor was quoting from other theological sources, but when you think over the meaning of the words, you see how apt they are, just the same. "Verbal Plenary Inspiration" means "God the Holy Spirit so supernaturally directed the human writers of Scripture that, without waiving their intelligence, their individuality, their personal feelings, their literary style, or any other human factor of expression, His Complete and Coherent Message to mankind was recorded with perfect accuracy in the original languages of Scripture: the very words bearing the Authority of Divine Authorship." So "Verbal" means, "the Bible in its original languages, from first to last (Autograph), is an exact record of the Mind and Will of God as He intended it to be." So "Plenary" means, "the entire text of the Bible is equally from God, but not necessarily equally-important." So "Inspiration" means, 2Tim3:16's "God-breathed" (theopneustos): just as God breathed into Adam's nostrils AFTER MAKING HIS BODY and that made Adam EXHALE and thus become a living soul, so also God's breathing of the Word into the Scripture writers produced an 'exhale' of Canon, without waiving any of their own personal attributes. Mt 5:18 "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Lu 21:33 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. 1Peter 1:20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. When Jesus leaves they (the disciples) will have total recall of everything He said while He was on earth. 1Jo 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.  27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:1; Php 4:6-7; Col 3:15 The word "peace" reflects the Heb. "Shalom," which became a greeting to His disciples after the resurrection (20:19–26). At the individual level this peace, unknown to the unsaved, secures composure in difficult trouble (cf. v. 1), dissolves fear (Phil. 4:7), and rules in the hearts of God's people to maintain harmony (Col. 3:15). The greatest reality of this peace will be in the messianic kingdom I read that 2/3rds of all women are on anti-depressants Num. 6:26; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Ps 29:11 The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace. Isa 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Isa 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things, Who proclaims salvation, Who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!" Isa 54:13 All your children shall be taught by the LORD, And great shall be the peace of your children. Isa 57:19 "I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near," Says the LORD, "And I will heal him." Eze 37:26 "Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore. Hag 2:9 'The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts. 'And in this place I will give peace,' says the LORD of hosts." Ac 10:36 "The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ--He is Lord of all— Ro 1:7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Ro 5:1 ¶ Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Ro 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  28 ¶ "You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away and coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I. John 5:18; 10:30; 14:3, 8, 12; 16:16; 20:17; Php 2:6 If the disciples had been more mature in their love for Jesus, they would have been glad for His departure. But their love was still selfish at this point. Jesus was in His humiliation on earth, but by going back to the Father He would be exalted in glory (cf. 13:31-32) and He will come back (cf. 14:3).[1] Cults or false teachers argue from the statement, The Father is greater than I, that Jesus is a lesser god. But this would make Jesus a created being or would lead to polytheism, both of which are clearly unbiblical. The Father and the Son share the same essence (cf. 1:1-2; 14:9; 20:28). The Father and the Son are “One” in purpose and essence (10:30). Thus the Father is greater in office or glory than the Son was in His humiliation.  29 "And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. John 13:19; 16:4 Isaiah 46:8–10 (ESV) 8 “Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, 9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,' Jesus had predicted His death and resurrection many times (e.g., Mark 8:31-32; 9:31). When this came to pass, after their initial shock, it would greatly help their faith. 30 "I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. John 12:31; 16:11 The Heb. idiom means that Satan had nothing on Jesus, could make no claim on Him, nor charge Him with any sin. Therefore, Satan could not hold Him in death. Christ would triumph and destroy Satan His teaching time was now limited because Satan, the prince of this world (cf. John 12:31; 16:11), was moving his forces against Jesus through Judas (cf. 13:2, 27). And yet Satan had no hold on Jesus. Sin leads to death (Rom. 5:12, 21a; 6:16), and sin and death give Satan a hold over people (cf. Heb. 2:14-15; Rev. 12:10). But since Jesus is sinless, Satan cannot claim Him for his kingdom of darkness. Satan thought Jesus' death was a victory for him, but actually it was Jesus' victory over Satan (John 16:11; Col. 2:15). Romans 5:12 Death in Adam, Life in Christ 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men5 because wall sinned— Colossians 2:15 (ESV) 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Hebrews 2:14–15 (ESV) 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 31 "But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here. John 10:18; Php 2:8; Heb 5:8 (NKJV) His death was no sign that Satan won, but that God's will was being done. Heb 5:8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. Philippians 2:8 (ESV) 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Whether Jesus' words in John 15-17 were spoken in the room or on the way to the garden is uncertain, but probably they were given in the room.[2] John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today.  hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/His-Love-Ministries-246606668725869/?tn-str=k*F https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/110230052184687338/charity/145555  “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  -John 8:32  The world is trying to solve earthly problems that can only be solved with heavenly solutions.

Pastor Rusty MiltonJohn 14:25-27 ESV"Peace I Leave With You"Any gift that Jesus gives you--his grace, salvation, peace, his word, etc--the Enemy will relentlessly attack. And he wants you to seek it in the wrong place and to discredit the power of God in your life. Satan loves to steal our peace. One way is to turn you toward the sin of your past, reminding you of how you do not deserve God's grace and deserve condemnation. Another way to tempt us is to look to physical or worldly means of peace, though these things cannot satisfy our inner needs. We must realize that Jesus has given us an inheritance of his peace.  There are two reasons why Christianity can sometimes seem to give us little or meaningless peace. One way is that we fail to realize what Christ has done for us. If this is us, it belies a lack of emphasis on grace in our lives. But in Christ, we need to realize we are free from condemnation and are promised an inheritance of eternal life. Another way is that we fail to realize what God has given to us. We must recognize, however, that the inheritance we are given from God is different than what the world gives. He gives us something that nothing and no one can give us in the world--his peace, which our soul craves more than anything. How do we apply this to our lives? First, realize where you direct the cravings and desires of your heart. Once identified, recognize that those things cannot and will not meet your needs. They will only distract us. Turn, rather, to the only true source of peace: Christ.John 14:25–27English Standard Version25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. We were recently in Kauai.  Our cottage was surrounded by the burrows of wedge tailed shearwater birds.  They make moans and groans and cries throughout the night.  However, when dawn breaks, they are silent. No more crying. It reminds me of the Scripture where Jesus says, weeping may last for the night but joy comes in the morning. Unfortunately, sometimes that night is not a literal night but a figurative one, and we wonder when the night is going to end. But God promises us joy after that long night. Sometimes we see glimpses of that joy along the way but then night comes again.  Those glimpses give us hope for the day when there will be no more night.  God promises us that, in heaven, there will be no more night. Our joy will be complete!  How I look forward to that day! Thank you, God, for reminding me that this is only a temporary state.  When life seems dark, remind me of your promises that joy is around the corner and that heaven is filled with joy. Whatever pain we have now is only temporary.  Help me to look for the joy You bring in the morning, even if is only temporary relief. When I am discouraged or depressed, help me to reflect on those times when You have brought joy to my life. Thank You for keeping Your promises. Amen

TODAY'S HOMILY IN BRIEF. In the Gospel of John (John 16:33), Jesus declares; "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! Nevertheless, Jesus Christ leaves us with the peace that surpasses all troubles and challenges. Hope with God... with Andrew and Wendy Palau

Jesus said so many amazing things before He went to the cross. Jesus said so many amazing things before He went to the cross. One of the most impactful is a promise of peace. He said, “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives…” That's in John 14. Think about that phrase: I do not give to you as the world gives. Our striving for peace can be one of the most frustrating parts of our human existence. And we're told by beautiful, powerful voices about fulfillment that never comes. But His promises are sure. He is able to fulfill His promises. He doesn't give us peace the way the world gives. He offers Himself! He, Himself, is our peace. Get to know Jesus. Begin a relationship with Him today. This gift of peace is for you. This is Wendy Palau. Scripture: John 14:27 radio.hopewithgod.com

Scripture Reading: John 14:15-31 15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him. But you know him because he resides with you and will be in you.18 “I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you. 19 In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. 20 You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. 21 The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”22 “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him. 24 The person who does not love me does not obey my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me.25 “I have spoken these things while staying with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father because the Father is greater than I am. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up, let us go from here.Main ThemesIf You Love Me, You Will Obey My CommandmentsTo love is to obey. That is certain to evoke a nearly visceral reaction in our modern culture. Honestly, I think that for us modern readers (myself included) even understanding such a statement is difficult. That is why we should take a minute to explore it in detail.Let's consider this statement from two angles.Covenantal TermsFirst, let's remember the Old Testament background to statements of love and hate. In the Old Testament we find God making covenants with people, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, and David. These bĕrît were common in the ancient Near East. So common, in fact, they followed a particular format. We do this kind of standardization today with common contracts as well, such as with bills of sale. Covenants also used particular language. We also do this today. Have you ever read a deed? It probably includes a phrase such as “conveys to Grantee to have and to hold it to Grantee and Grantee's heirs, successors, and assigns forever.” Someone unfamiliar with our legal system may not understand that such language is legalese for “convey in fee simple.” What are we missing when we read ancient covenants? Consider the following quotation:Blessings were another important feature of a bĕrît. These were the benefits promised if the contract were maintained. Curses were the consequences if the contract were violated. Covenant loyalty (“lovingkindness” or ḥesed) was the objective of the agreement. The parity treaties report that the partners are now brothers; the suzerain/vassal covenants speak of the parties as father/son or lord/servant. To abide by the contract with one's suzerain was to love him, and to betray the suzerain or to fail to keep his stipulations was to hate him. Is any of this language sounding familiar? It should be! The Bible is riddled with it. Why? Because this is the terminology associated with the international politics of the ancient Near East, and the Bible is describing Israel's relationship to Yahweh in terms of a bĕrît. Yahweh has become Israel's suzerain and Israel has become his vassal. Richter, Sandra L.. The Epic of Eden (p. 79). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition [emphasis added].Forgive me for belaboring the point, but we really need to understand covenants in some detail before the “New Covenant” really makes sense to us. For that, let's consider the format of the Old Covenant—the suzerain/vassal covenant that God made with his people Israel: I. Preamble/Title: “I am Yahweh your God . . .” Gives title of superior party Exod 20:2a; Deut 5:6aII. Historical Prologue: “. . . who brought you up out of the land Furnishes the basis of obligation of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” and the motive for accepting the covenant's stipulations as binding Exod 20:2b; Deut 5:6b (cf. Deut 1—3)III. Stipulations/Obligations Imposed: “You shall have no other gods before me. . . .” Exod 20:3-17; Deut 5:7-21 (cf. Deut 12—26)IV. Deposition and Provision for Periodic Reading of the Treaty Before the People: Treaty text archived in the temple of the vassal's chief deity (i.e., the witness to his oath)“Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand . . .” (Ex 32:15) “. . . and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I shall give you.” (Ex 25:21; cf. Ex 40:20; Deut 10:5) “At the end of every seven years . . . when all Israel comes to appear before Yahweh your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the alien who is in your town, in order that they may hear and learn and fear Yahweh your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law.” (Deut 31:10-12; cf. Ex 24:7; Josh 8:30-35)V. List of Witnesses: “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today . . .” The deities of both parties are summoned to act as witnesses to the oaths taken Deut 4:26; 30:19-20; 31:28VI. Curses and Blessings: “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you will obey Yahweh your God . . . But if you will not obey Yahweh your God . . . all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you.” Deut 27:11–28:68 These acts of treaty-making were sealed by means of a ratification ceremony involving oath and sacrifice (Ex 24:3-8; cf. Gen 15:17-21; Jer 34:17-20; Mt 27:22-25). [emphasis added]Richter, Sandra L.. The Epic of Eden (pp. 83-84). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition. It is in this covenantal context that we find one of the most well-known verses of the whole Bible:You must love the Lord your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5)As a clarification, I am not claiming that all references to love and hate in the Old or New Testaments are part of covenantal language. They are certainly not. However, when they are, we need to make sure we understand how the meaning can be affected. The New Covenant—the covenant that God makes with all believers in Christ is also a suzerain/vassal covenant. It can be expressed in the same format as before. I encourage you to take each of the six sections above and fill in the blanks for the New Covenant. What is the point of all this extended discussion on covenants? A covenant is a deal, like an ancient contract. Both sides have responsibilities. There are benefits for following the deal and penalties for breaching it. And notice that in this deal, one who follows the deal is said to love the other party. In covenantal terms, obedience does not result from love, obedience is love. So to say, “if you love me, you will obey my commandments” is nearly to express a tautology.Of course, the New Covenant is quite a one-sided deal. Christ is the sacrifice by which the contract is sealed (see part VI above) and nearly all the stipulations (see part III above) are placed on Christ too. He must be perfect and fulfill the law, not us. What do we have to do? Believe. No more, no less. But if we really believe in someone or something, won't that affect our behavior? Absolutely. This takes us into the next point.Faith Implies ObedienceLet's consider this verse from a different angle. Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus encourages his disciples to persevere. I do not mean only the twelve disciples, but all the people who place their faith in Jesus. Throughout the story many fall away. Jesus requires too much for them.Consider what that means. What does disobedience imply? A lack of trust. An example is useful. If I were invited to go bungee jumping, there would come a point when I am standing before a great fall. I am told, “jump!” Assume I don't. I just stand there. I cannot get over the fear that the elastic rope will snap. I step away from the edge and go home. What went wrong? I did not have faith in the rope. I did not believe in the rope. Those who love Jesus will obey his commandments because they trust him. They trust that what Jesus says is good is truly good and worthwhile. They trust that what Jesus says is bad is truly bad and worth avoiding. They believe Jesus words about this life and the next.Christians are often accused of obeying out of fear. The accusation is not completely wrong. Leaving questions of salvation aside for a moment, God designed the world a certain way. Opposing that design will generally have bad consequences, which we are right to fear. But notice that the overarching reason to obey is trust. If a doctor I trusted told me I needed to take some vitamin every day, I would do it even if I did not know what would happen if I did not. There might be no fear of consequences, but there would be trust that following his directions would lead to a better life.He Will Give You Another AdvocateOnce Jesus departs, he tells the disciples, the Father will send another “advocate.” At least that is the word used by the translation we are using. Other translations may use a different word. Here's translator note 37 from the NET Bible, which sets up the issue quite well:Or “Helper” or “Counselor”; Grk “Paraclete,” from the Greek word παράκλητος (paraklētos). Finding an appropriate English translation for παράκλητος is a very difficult task. No single English word has exactly the same range of meaning as the Greek word. “Comforter,” used by some of the older English versions, appears to be as old as Wycliffe. But today it suggests a quilt or a sympathetic mourner at a funeral. “Counselor” is adequate, but too broad, in contexts like “marriage counselor” or “camp counselor.” “Helper” or “Assistant” could also be used, but could suggest a subordinate rank. “Advocate,” the word chosen for this translation, has more forensic overtones than the Greek word does, although in John 16:5-11 a forensic context is certainly present. Because an “advocate” is someone who “advocates” or supports a position or viewpoint and since this is what the Paraclete will do for the preaching of the disciples, it was selected in spite of the drawbacks. We could get caught up in the weeds of this translation dilemma. For example, the translation of “Consoler” dates back at least to Origen (circa 200 AD). The “Comforter” translation dates back to the Wycliffe translation (circa 1390). The translation “Advocate” is arguably most consistent with Rabbinic uses of the term. At the end of the day, the context should dictate the proper translation. And which translation fits the context best? That is tough to answer. Instead, let's explore this idea of the Paraclete in more detail. A great starting point is to ask: how does the Paraclete compare with Jesus?Paraclete Christ14:16 given by the father 3:1614:16–17 with, in, by the disciples 3:22; 13:33; 14:2014:17 not received by the world 1:11; 5:53 [sic:43]; (12:48)14:17 not known by world (only believers) 16:3; 8:19; 10:1414:17 not seen by world (only believers) 14:19; 16:16–1714:26 sent by the Father cf. chs. 5, 7, 8, 1214:26 teaches 7:14–15; 8:20; 18:1915:26; 16:7, 13 he comes (from the Father into world) 5:43; 16:28; 18:3715:26 gives testimony 5:31ff.; 8:13ff.; 7:716:8 convicts the world (3:19f.; 9:41; 15:22)16:13 speaks not from self but from what is heard 7:17; 8:26ff.; 14:1016:14 glorifies his sender 12:28; 17:1, 416:13ff. reveals, discloses, proclaims 4:25; (16:25)16:13 leads into fulness of truth 18:37; 14:615:26; 14:17; 16:13 is Spirit of truth/is truth 14:614:16 (etc.) a Paraclete (14:16); 1 John 2:1Keener, Craig S. The Gospel of John : 2 Volumes (p. 965). Baker Publishing Group. Kindle Edition. (citing Burge)The proximity, or better yet, the continuity between Jesus and the Paraclete is incredible. The Paraclete is like another Jesus. And that is exactly the point. Jesus has not “abandon[ed] us as orphans.” He is with us in a real way. Indeed, he is in us. (John 14:20)The Paraclete is not simply a personification of Wisdom. Notice how closely the Apostle Paul identifies the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God:8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is your life because of righteousness. 11 Moreover if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through his Spirit who lives in you. (Romans 8:8-11, emphasis added)Did you catch the striking looseness of Paul's language? He goes from the Spirit, to the Spirit of God, to the Spirit of Christ, to Christ! And then back to the Spirit! God, Christ, and the Spirit all act in concert, on behalf of one another. So Paul can confidently claim that to have the Spirit is to have Christ is to have God.The point I am trying to make is that the Paraclete is not some kind of metaphor, like a personification of Wisdom. The Paraclete is God. The Paraclete is one with Jesus and the Father. And the Paraclete is just as personal (as in, it has personhood) as Jesus and the Father. The last topics of discussion will be the characteristics of the Paraclete that are emphasized in the remaining verses of chapter 14.Paraclete as the Invisible SuccessorJesus does not abandon us as orphans. He sends the Holy Spirit to continue doing all the jobs Jesus was doing (see the chart above). But the Spirit is invisible to the world. Then how can the Christian mission continue moving forward?First, we need to understand what John means by “world.” The world refers to those people who are not in Christ. Oftentimes John divides all humanity into two groups: believers and the world. So I will repeat the question above: if nonbelievers cannot see the Paraclete like unbelievers could see Jesus in the flesh, how can they ever come to believe in Jesus? This brings us to the second successor of Jesus—the Church. I know I am going off script a bit since the Gospel of John does not emphasize the motif of the Church succeeding Christ. This motif is found mostly (although not exclusively) in the writings of Paul. Nonetheless, I must mention it so we get a full picture.Just like Jesus as a human person has a body and spirit, Jesus' presence on this earth continues to have a body and spirit—the Church and the Paraclete. That is why we can answer the question above. The “world” cannot see the Spirit, but they can see Jesus' body, just like they could see Jesus when he walked on the earth. The Church as a body indwelled by the Spirit of God is to continue the work that Jesus started.Consider the following verses:Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all. 8 For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.12 For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body—though many—are one body, so too is Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not a single member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. 16 And if the ear says, “Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body,” it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. 17 If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell? 18 But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. 19 If they were all the same member, where would the body be? 20 So now there are many members, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor in turn can the head say to the foot, “I do not need you.” 22 On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential, 23 and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity, 24 but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member, 25 so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another. 26 If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a member is honored, all rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 4:26)Notice that Paul is not using the word body as figuratively as we may use it. We may speak of someone's “body of work,” in which case the word takes on the meaning “aggregate.” We may also refer to a group using the word “body,” such as a “legislative body.” This second use gets much closer to what Paul means, but it is still not quite there. Paul does not use body as a simple aggregate of all believers or as a synonym for the “group” of believers. He really does mean that we make up a functioning organism. Paul seems to use the word “body” as when we say that many cells make up one human body.Notice that the Spirit is the one assigning roles (by means of gifts) to each part of the body. That is a key role of the Spirit, which is mentioned albeit in less detail in John 14.Paraclete To Teach and RemindIn verse 26, we are told that the Paraclete will come to teach and remind of “everything.” The first question, and a rather simple one, is whom will the Paraclete teach and remind? Only the disciples? The context makes clear that the scope is broader. The verses just prior indicate that “anyone who loves [Jesus]” will be loved by the Father, and the Father will “take up residence with him.” The Holy Spirit will teach every believer “everything” and remind every believer of “everything [Jesus] said to [the disciples]”.The second question, and a more challenging one, is what is the scope of the teaching and reminding? The reminding action is unambiguously limited in the text by the clause “everything I said to you.” What about the teaching action? Can the Holy Spirit teach us new revelation that goes beyond what is revealed in the Bible? Could the Holy Spirit lead us into new revelation that contradicts the Bible? Let me give you some reasons why I do not think that is correct.First, to what does the phrase “everything I said to you” apply? Above, I said it unambiguously applies to the action of reminding, but that does not mean it cannot apply to something else too. Notice the grammar is ambiguous as to the action of teaching. The phrase could properly apply to one action or both. Therefore, the context will dictate what is being qualified by that phrase. What is the context? In this section, Jesus repeatedly demands obedience to his commandments. He also portrays the Paraclete as a continuation of Jesus. This alone rules out the possibility that the Spirit would teach anything contradictory to what Jesus taught during his earthly ministry. But this is also a strong indication that the Spirit will act within the confines of Jesus' words. Put simply, this is strong indication that the Paraclete will “teach you everything [I said to you] and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.”Additionally, this interpretation of teaching is in line with the Jewish halakah tradition. Halakah was (and still is) the totality of laws and ordinances that evolved since biblical times to regulate religious observances and the daily life and conduct of the Jewish people. Therefore, if we interpret “teaching” as a first century Jew might have done, it would have meant lessons based on the scripture. Perhaps such teaching could go “further” than the scripture in teaching practical applications of it, but not in creating entirely new themes. Finally, we have John's other writings to help us decipher this. Consider 1 John 2:18-2718 Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. We know from this that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us because if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But they went out from us to demonstrate that all of them do not belong to us.20 Nevertheless you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you that you do not know the truth, but that you do know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the antichrist: the person who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father either. The person who confesses the Son has the Father also.24 As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 Now this is the promise that he himself made to us: eternal life. 26 These things I have written to you about those who are trying to deceive you.27 Now as for you, the anointing that you received from him resides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as it has taught you, you reside in him.Notice that in 1 John, the author repeats a strikingly similar idea: God's anointing will “teach you about all things.” But what does it mean? To quote verse 24, “As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain in you.” God's anointing leads the believer into knowing and remembering what was “heard from the beginning.” The teaching is about residing and remaining, not about growing into new knowledge.Peace I Leave with YouJesus promises peace after his departure. Indeed, he promises “his peace.” What does he mean?In the ancient world as in the modern world, peace applied to war and human relationships. In those contexts it means the absence of conflict. Peace, however, also had and has other meanings. It could refer to tranquility in the midst of hardship, to bliss after death, and for the Jews in particular it could mean an eschatological hope—i.e., heaven. The context of chapter 14 continually alludes to future troubles. The whole farewell speech makes little sense if once Jesus is crucified the disciples will lead lives of comfort, with little to no conflict. The entire Gospel of John emphasizes perseverance in the faith despite opposition, with that opposition sometimes coming from those closest to the embattled believer.Consequently, Jesus is not leaving us peace in the sense that we are promised a life without struggles. Instead—given the near guarantee of struggles—Jesus leaves us “his peace” as a farewell comfort. I think this peace is a tranquility in the midst of hardship because the Paraclete will assure us and remind us of the bliss to come in our heavenly hope.

Sermons from Saint Christopher's By-the-Sea, Portland Texas

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that is given to us is the Peace of Christ. It is something that Jesus both promised and gave to his disciples. But what does that peace truly look like, and how do we know what it is? In this sermon, preached on the Feast of Pentecost, Father Blackburn shows the stark contrast between the peace of the world and the peace of Jesus.

On the day before Jesus died, John tells us that Jesus' heart was troubled. Can you imagine why? Even so, just like last week, we can see that Jesus' heart and mind is with his disciples. He's comforting them. He knows that he won't be with them any longer. He knows that they can't follow. But he wants them to know that they will not be alone. And so he tells them: "to the one who obeys my teaching, my Father will send you another advocate, to help you and be with you forever." This is the Holy Spirit. This Sunday, you can look forward to comfort. And you can look forward to teaching, as we get into the work of the Holy Spirit and what he does for our hearts to comfort us and to point us to Jesus. Here's the joy of it. All three parts of the Triune God are here. The Father is here, Jesus his Son is here, and the Holy Spirit is here. All for one purpose. What is it? Peace, I leave with you. My peace I give you. That's the promise of God.

Peace I Leave You; My Peace I Give To YouJohn 14:26-27 “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”I think this verse stood out to me because I know a lot of people that are struggling to find peace right now.  Either they are struggling with anxiety or depression, or a physical illness.  There is never a good time to be physically ill, however, the holidays is the worst time.  On a good day, most of us tend not to be super good patients.  The doctors tell you to rest and you say you will.  But then the dog needs to go out, your kids need to eat and they want you to cook it, or the laundry won't get done if you don't do it.  There are a hundred things going through our minds and we just don't seem to rest.  Now, maybe you are the exception to this rule.  Maybe you do a great job resting when you are ill and you don't push yourself.  If that is you then I am so proud of you.  It is not easy and yet it is really the only way to get better sometimes.  For those of us that push through, refuse to rest, or say we will rest after we get it all done, which never happens, I would like to suggest that you try something new, and just rest.  If you are feeling sick take time for yourself and rest.  I bet you will get better faster and you will be up and at it again before you know it.  I promise you that if you rest for a day or two, or even a week, your world will not end.  Yes, maybe your laundry won't get done, life will still go on.  Your kids will survive if they had to wear the same thing more than one day in a row because you were too sick to do laundry.  Your kids will survive if they have to eat cereal for three meals a day for a week because you can't get out of bed.  I promise they will not be scarred for life because of this.  Is this what we would want for them everyday, no, of course not.  However, if you are sick and you need to rest, then you can rest.  I am giving you permission because sometimes we need someone else to tell us that it is ok.  We need someone to tell us we are not a bad mom and dad if we take a day or two or however, much we need to rest and get better.  Covid seems to be running rampant right now, again.  I know several people who are sick right now, right before Christmas.  I understand that is awful timing.  I understand that you have so much to do to get ready for the holidays.  I also understand that your family wants you to recover from this more than anything you could possibly give to them or do for them for Christmas.  Yes, you may not be able to do all of your shopping by Dec. 25th.  Yes, your presents may not all get wrapped on time.  You may have to give up some traditions that you normally do, such as Christmas cards, or gifts to the kids teachers, maybe even going all out with decorations.  It is ok, the world will not end.  Your loved ones will understand.  If you need to push Christmas back a week, then do that.  The most important thing is that you take care of yourself so that you can be around for many Christmas's to come.  I am sure your family would prefer that you take it easy, rest, don't push yourself, and then get better sooner. You are more important than any gift, cookie swap, or holiday party that you may have to miss.  Nothing is more important than your heath. For those of you that are struggling to find peace with your mental health this season, first I just want to say that you are not alone.  I know so many people struggling with anxiety and depression right now.  The holidays are great whenever thing is going great.  However, when you are struggling, they can be really difficult, especially if you have lost people in the past.  It doesn't even have to be that you just lost someone.  It doesn't matter when you lost a loved one, the holidays can bring that pain back.  We remember our lost ones more during the holidays because we have all the memories of the past holidays we got to spend with them, we miss them because we don't get to spend this holiday with them.  It can be really sad to think about all they are missing out on.  It can be really hard for so many, especially if they are not surrounded by family that are still here.  One thing to remember, and hopefully it can bring someone comfort, is to remember that although we no longer see them, they are still with us.  They aren't missing out on the festivities, they are there watching us from Heaven and enjoying being a part of it.  It is sad for us because we are here on earth without them, but I honestly don't believe it is sad for the.  They get to be with our heavenly Father and they get to be with us as we celebrate.  It doesn't get much better than that.I started with first saying that you are not alone because sometimes it can feel that way.  Sometimes it can feel like everyone else is happy and they are loving life and we can't understand why we aren't.  It is important that you know this is not the case.  Even people that look super happy on social media, or in the drop off line at school are struggling.  They are just hiding it, the same way you are when you go out around other people.  Knowing we are not alone and that what we are feeling is normal can really help take the pressure off what we are going through.  However, it doesn't change what we are going through, or what we are feeling.  That is what you are probably looking for.  How do I feel better?  How do I stop the anxious feelings and the depression?  How do I get this peace that God is talking about? This is where this verse come in.  “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”  Jesus said before He was crucified that He was going to leave us with peace.  He said his peace will be different than the peace the world will give us.  What is the peace that the world gives us?  The world tells us to rely on ourselves.  If you want to lose weight, just take this pill or buy that food.  If you want to be financially set for the future invest in this thing or buy that stock.  Whatever it is you are looking for, you can find something the world is selling to try to give you more peace about it.  There are books about every single topic from parenting to the most obscure things.  The world would like us to rely on it to solve our problems.I am not saying you shouldn't try to lose weight if that is a concern of yours and I am not saying it is bad to invest.  It is good to take care of your health and your financial future.  However, those things in itself won't give you peace of mind and they will never give you a peace like God can give you.  You can invest in your future, but if you don't also have trust in God that things will work out, then you will invest and invest and you will never feel like you have invested enough.  It is good to take care of your body and try to keep in healthy, but if you are not trusting in God to help keep you healthy then you will never feel like you are doing enough.  Jesus said that after he died, His Father would send down the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, and He would teach us everything, and would remind us of all that Jesus told us.  The Holy Spirit is our key to happiness and to peace.  If you are feeling super anxious or depressed pray for the Holy Spirit to come and give you that peace.  The Holy Spirit can teach you to have peace and I also believe He can give you peace as a gift in the moments that you need it.  When you are feeling your thoughts spiral downward there are two prayers that are short enough to remember even if you can't really think and can be enormously powerful.  First is “Come Holy Spirit Come,” and the second one is “Jesus, I trust in You.”  You can repeat one of these over and over again, “Come Holy Spirit Come,  Come Holy Spirit Come, Come Holy Spirit Come” or “Jesus, I trust in You, Jesus, I trust in You, Jesus, I trust in You” or you can alternate “Come Holy Spirit Come, Jesus I trust in You,Come Holy Spirit Come, Jesus I trust in You.”  I don't know what is best for you in your circumstance.  Whatever works best for you is what is best, there is not right thing to say.  Our Father in heaven gave us the Holy Spirit to bring us peace and to teach us.  He knew we would need the Holy Spirit to make it through this crazy world.  If you are suffering with anxiety or depression right now I want you to know that I am praying for you.  I know it is not easy.  God will help you with this and this will not last forever.  It probably seems like it will, but I promise you it won't.  That is just a lie the enemy is telling you, don't believe it!  Your Father in heaven knows you are struggling and He is doing an amazing work in your and will deliver you from this in His perfect timing.  Keep going, keep calling on the power of the Holy Spirit, and the power of Jesus' name.  Don't give up, there are so many people that love you!Dear Heavenly Father I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Father, I ask for a special blessing for those that are suffering mentally or physically during this holiday season.  Lord I ask for you to give them an overwhelming sense that they are loved and an overwhelming sense of peace that all will be ok eventually.  Lord, I ask that you cure them all of their struggles, but even if it isn't your perfect timing for that I pray that right after they hear this episode you fill them with love and peace, even if it is just for a moment.  Give them that grace so that they have the strength to go on.  Even if someone is not listening to this episode Lord, I ask that you give all those that are struggling a moment of pure love and peace.  Lord, you are so amazing.  I can't believe how much you love us and help us despite our continued mess ups.  We want to strive to be more like you Lord, and we know that we can't do anything without your help.  We are helpless without you.  We love you Lord and we ask all this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I know today is a little bit longer, but I really felt like the Holy Spirit wanted to speak to all those suffering right now.  If you are someone who is suffering I would love if you would be on the lookout for that overwhelming feeling of peace and love today.  I know God will deliver as He always does and I don't want you to miss it.  I love all of you that are listening and I am praying for all of you.  I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow, have a blessed day!
