Now that that's clear - let's jump into our first training!…The concept of a Food Forest is something I learned when I got my Permaculture Design Certification in 2012.The term perma-culture is a play on the words “permanent agriculture” and was coined to describe designing food growing systems that mimic how Nature grows food. Of course it doesn't actually originate there —The food forest concept I first learned in “permaculture” echos the forest gardens common among the Indigenous societies of North America's northwestern coast, and worldwide.Indigenous peoples around the world have lived and continue to live in relationship with land.Nature doesn't grow food like large-scale commercial farms, with rows and rows of the same crops acting like a salad bar for bugs, requiring pesticides and human intervention, and centered around making a profit. Nature grows food in forests.Rainforests cover less than 2% of the Earth's total surface area, yet they are home to 50% of the Earth's plants and animals.Out of the 3,000 plants the U.S. National Cancer Institute has identified as useful in the treatment of cancer, 70% of these plants are found only in rainforests.At least 80% of the developed world's food originated in the tropical rainforest. Its bountiful gifts to the world include fruits like avocados, oranges, tomatoes; vegetables including corn, potatoes, winter squash; spices like black pepper, coffee and vanilla; and nuts like Brazil nuts and cashews.[Source]These food forests or forest gardens are apart of our human nature and are resilient as fuck.A sad example showing this is the forest gardens established around First Nation villages in Alaska — colonists forcibly removed the indigenous people from their villages 150 years ago but the forest gardens are currently thriving without human intervention.The land is waiting for its people to return.[Source]These systems don't require pesticides to thrive. Or human intervention. They don't require humans at all. Nature designed them to be self-reliant and to self-regulate — through many species of plants, animals, fungi, insects, bacteria, and rocks, minerals, molecules, elements, all collaborating and cohabitating in a multidimensional cycle of death and growth, all in the name of increased alive-ness of the system.In ecological succession, most ecosystems end up like a forest. And without significant disturbances, like wildfires or severe climate changes or humans coming through a clearcutting it, the forest will endure indefinitely, because the system becomes stable and self-perpetuating.So within permaculture, whether you're designing a backyard food growing system, or a 100+ acre farm, you're using this concept of a Food Forest in its design.Because who's the most fertile, abundant, resilient systems designer? Nature.And when we design like Nature does, our systems are less reliant on us. We get our freedom and time back. And we create something beautiful and wild for the world, that can shock the current Industrial status quo.And it doesn't have to stop at food-growing systems.We can use Nature's principles and teachings to design our business systems too.Our focus today is an important one. You may want to skip it because it's less flashy than the next couple trainings, but this step is absolutely necessary to complete before starting the next 2.Today we'll be setting your Food Forest goal and analyzing your site.This is different than your annual revenue goal or anything like that.1. SETTING YOUR ULTIMATE GOALBefore designing a Food Forest you need to be clear on what your goal is. Because a goal of growing enough food for your family with as little work required from you as possible, versus you creating a community hub and demonstration site, versus you wanting as much food production as possible so you can sell your extra to local restaurants and create value added products to sell at farmers markets, all of those could be done on the same plot of land, but what you plant and what systems you set up would be significantly different.Down below this video you'll find a list of questions to go through today to get clear on your business's ultimate goal — it's essentially a short quiz whose answers will enlighten the decisions you'll be making in the next 2 videos.Let's go through them together now - you can mark down your answers as we go along, or return to this later. She holds a -MS in Eco-Social Regeneration and 3 diplomas in Permaculture Design. Penny has also been studying the Hermetic Tradition of alchemy and herbal medicine making in Europe, Indonesia, and the United States. She has sat on the board of the Permaculture Institute of North America as well as, the Building Appeals Board for the County of Marin. She was also a founding board member for the Redwood Empire Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. And a founding member of the Regenerative Design Institute.And has studied, taught with, hosted, and learned directly from Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, co-founders of Permaculture.Penny has been teaching internationally and working professionally in the land management, regenerative design, and permaculture development field for over 25 years and has extensive experience in all phases of ecologically sound design and natural construction. From Permaculture to Bees and everything in between, C. Scott Taylor is a fascinating man. We had a very enlightening chat and discussed learning Permaculture under the creator himself, Bill Mollison, and touched on how Permaculture has progressed over the years. As an avid bee keeper, Scott has a wealth of information and is more than happy to share. It really is a full conversation and we could have kept on chatting for hours. Scott moved to Australia from Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1999, and became a citizen in 2007. He did a Permaculture Design Certification (PDC) course in 1994, in Northern California, taught by Bill Mollison and a group of teachers he assembled. It was one of the most transformative sets of teachings he had ever experienced, from a masterful teacher. It was a pivotal time in his life, taking his interest in Permaculture for the previous decade to the level of professional training. Following the PDC course he returned to Santa Fe, took on design jobs for various clients and was offered an opportunity to teach an Introduction to Permaculture course at the local Community College (in the US this is equivalent to TAFE). He taught that course for two years. Scott gained a lot of experience and eventually came to realise that Permaculture is not something that can be done without the full participation of the humans involved. It is not something one can do for others: they must be part of the system. He brings to this podcast insights into how Permaculture can inspire and inform your life as a responsible part of the greater living system in which we live. Not one to give out lists of what to do, instead he prefers to share an informed framework for you to work within, avoiding common errors, and making your role easier and better. Such a wonderful chat with Courtney Cosgriff about what to plant in your garden to raise your vitality and to help pollinators thrive. We discuss different approaches to beekeeping and how to do so more holistically. We also discuss ways to honor and celebrate the bees. “Honeybee Herbals is a business that is dedicated to providing Earth centered healing and education in the hopes of restoring our connection to the natural world. Honeybee Herbals is inspired by the divine connection between honeybees and plants, and harnesses this inspiration to heal communities through empowering individuals with tools to heal themselves. I came to the world of herbalism, beekeeping, and earth centered traditions because like many others my heart ached to see not only what we were doing to this earth but also how much of ourselves we had lost in the process. In 2011 I had two near death experiences both car accidents, the first one led me to travel through Oregon where I met a beekeeper and the second one was caused by a wasp stinging me in the eye. It took some time but eventually I came to the conclusion that these and the many other honeybee related events that followed were not simple coincidences but rather signs pointing me to a deeper calling. So I listened and began a long journey of studying with various mentors until forming my own path and relationship to honeybees centered around a deep reverence and fascination with the history, myth, and magic surrounding them. In addition to beekeeping I am passionate about education and activism on behalf of pollinator conservation. In the winter of 2016 I was hired as the resident beekeeper and educator at The GrowHaus in Denver. Since then I’ve taught in many of their education programs geared towards various age groups. I think the honeybees have many valuable things to teach us and I am passionate about sharing their wisdom with many. When I fell in love with the Honeybee I fell in love with the world.My journey as an Herbalist and Nutritionist also began with the honeybees. When I planted my first garden for the honeybees I knew very little about the magic the plant kingdom possesses. With time I became mesmerized by the plants watching the honeybees travel from flower to flower the thyme, lavender, sages, and hyssop with their beautiful flowers and intoxicating aromas. I was captivated and inspired by this beautiful connection between honeybees and plants. In 2012 I began school at Metropolitan State University of Denver. It was during this time that I was experiencing a lot of health issues myself while also seeing those I love most suffer deeply. I started to take classes centered around holistic therapies and I was captivated. I didn’t grow up in a household that exposed me to these therapies but when I found them I feel I found a big part of myself. I graduated from Metropolitan State University in 2016 with my Bachelor’s of Science in Integrative Healthcare. After graduating I wanted to dive deeply into plant medicine and nutrition so I continued my studies at The Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism. It was here where I really fine tuned my vision as well as going on a deep journey of personal healing and discovery. In June of 2018 I graduated from this school as a Certified Clinical Herbalist and Nutritionist and Flower Essence Practitioner with over 1,900 hours in clinical training and education. I want to cover the question "Where do I start?" I've seen this question frequently on social media outlets. I'm going to use quotes from Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, the founders of permaculture, to help answer this question. Permaculture means 'permenant-culture'. It's much more than 'permenant-agriculture', as many would otherwise define the word. There's much more to this movement than agriculture, it's a multi-layered and conscious design on methodologies of sustainability. "The conscious design and maintenance of cultivated ecosystems that have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems" - Bill Mollison "Traditional agriculture was labor intensive, modern industrial agriculture is energy intensive, and permaculture-designed systems are information and design intensive" - David Holmgren "People frequently ask how much land they need for self-sufficiency. The answer is 'As much as you can control'. Any more and you lose self-sufficiency. Let alone the ability to produce an excess. If people ask 'Where do I start?' Then the answer is always, 'At your front doorstep.'" - Bill Mollison What purpose do you want your land to serve? What will you be able to contribute to your land? You will need to create a permaculture plan that will give an overall view of what the land could look like in the end of your journey. However, this will likely change as it goes because permaculture is a dynamic system. Create goals that you wish your land to provide for you. Above all, before doing anything, observe the functions of your land and how it will be able to make way to reach those goals. Don't make any major changes in the land, especially things such as permanent buildings or features. As you learn more about your land, it may have not been placed in the right place. As you build your permaculture plan for your property, you will need to learn as much as you can about permaculture, other alternative agriculture methods, and environmental sustainability. You may consider a Permaculture Design Certification, which is at minimum a 72 hour class. Many of the best permaculture teachers are talking at in a world-wide conversation that will better create a curriculum that all share, and standardize the PDC moving forward with the movement. Don't rule out animals to help establish your permaculture plan at your property. Chickens naturally scratch and till grass to eat bugs and other vegetation. Over time, they will scratch and till the vegetation to bare ground. As you give them tomatoes and other seed bearing fruits or vegetables, they will spread the desirable volunteer seeds for you. When you move the animals, the seeds will germinate and start your first garden. You could plant additional seeds after moving the animals as well. Goats will eat away overgrowth, and virtually any plant is on the menu, including poison ivy. Don't pet your goat after they go into a poison ivy patch, however! Goats are great for clearing the overgrowth for other animals to succeed their place and change the land according to your plan. Pigs are great for rooting plants and bugs in the soil. They will get rid of pesky plants that you wish to get rid of from the roots. Pigs will also wallow in the ground naturally in a hole where a future pond will be. This will create a natural compaction to keep water in the pond instead of it slowly seeping out quickly. There are many ways to use animals to help do the work for you. Once you have studied permaculture thoroughly, created a plan that you will work towards on your property that will ultimately meet goals you've created, as well as identified the time commitment involved, you are well underway to starting out right from your doorstep. Think of starting out as a tree growing, the growth starts in the soil then occurs upward and outward, from the inside out. He has been working at various permaculture centres in Costa Rica since 2009 where he leads an industrious team to cultivate 15 acres of emerging tropical agroforest. Scott is passionate about regenerative agriculture, holistic thinking, ethnobotany, community development, and re-skilling, and teaches Permaculture Design Certification courses in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

He has received both a Permaculture Design Certification, as well as the Vegan Permaculture Design Certification, and works as a landscaper in Chicago. Fresh faced & starry eyed, she started her journey into the food scene by earning her Permaculture Design Certification with an emphasis on community development and ethno botanical horticulture in her early twenties. Todays episode is a deep dive into the philosophy and experience of Nature School Founder Bonnie Davison. Bonnie talks about developing and encouraging SOUL GIFTS in children and adults and takes Julian on a journey to one of his earliest childhood memories. Beginning her career as a music therapist, working with hearing impaired children who were learning to speak, sparked Bonnies interest in helping children learn to fluently speak, read and write. Then, becoming a classroom and learning resource teacher and meeting her mentor Dr Fleurette Sweeney inspired Bonnie to learn about and share Singing English Song-Games & Techniques, an extremely fun way for children to build a strong literacy foundation. Of course, just like 'they' say, everything changes when you have children. When Bonnie decided she didn't want to be one of those complaining, teacher moms, she actually started her very own forest school. That's when she realized that children, when at school, are not spending enough time outside, and something has to change in that development of over intellectualizing the parenting experience. And yes, being outside and connected to nature is another passion of hers. So as an avid outdoors woman, why wouldn't she want children to have the greatest classroom experiences available! She became certified by Forest School Canada as a Forest School Practitioner and six years ago started the Victoria Nature School and the Outdoor Learning Association. Sara Rickards has a Permaculture Design Certification, Bachelors in Biomedical Science, a Masters in Environmental Engineering and she's also a street wizard. Sara has an uncanny ability to see patterns that other people can't. She attributes this superpower to her dyslexia that, despite her multiple degrees, made school work more difficult for her. But in real life, she uses the non-linear thought patterns to disrupt systems including the education sector, construction and soon the economy. Sara is a real human full of sparkle. She has the same enthusiasm as JVN (from Queer Eye, DUH) and the same life purpose as Oprah- to unlock human potential. In short, Sara teaches what she lives- the simple art of giving a fuck.
This was an opportunity from a few months ago that I just couldn't pass up.
