I'm excited to have Denny Rickards on today's episode because we'll debunk some stillwater fly fishing myths.  Denny is one of the most knowledgeable stillwater anglers out there, and he's here to share his step-by-step approach to finding big fish in lakes. By the end of this episode, you'll have a solid framework for what to do (and what not to do) when fishing stillwaters. You're in for a big treat today because you'll learn how to know when fish are moving, when they're not, and when they're feeding. You're also going to find out why you should be casting to the edge of the lake, how to find the exact depth for holding fish, and why fish take on the pause. Show Notes with Denny Rickards on Stillwater Fly Fishing Myths It's been six years since we had Denny on Episode 064, where we covered lakes and the history of stillwater fishing. Today, we're going to do another round, and we'll also talk about some common stillwater fly fishing myths and challenges. Matching the Hatch 03:13 - Denny said many anglers start their day by trying to match what they think the fish are eating. He said this practice of matching the hatch comes from our days when we first started fly fishing on streams and rivers. Denny points out that 90% of a trout's food is below the surface, not on top.  Just because a fly isn't working right away doesn't mean it's the wrong one. The real question is, did the fish even see it? Finding Fish on a Lake  07:36 - Denny says there are two things you must figure out first: where the fish are and how deep they are. If you don't, you'll fall into the trial-and-error trap.  A common stillwater fly fishing myth is that a fish will hit your fly again if it missed the first time, but Denny's never seen that happen. Instead of wasting casts on the same spot, Denny said to move. The angler who keeps moving will always outfish the one who stays put. The more fresh fish that see your fly, the better your chances. The angler who keeps moving will always outfish the one who stays put. Denny Rickards Where Do Trout Feed? Denny said that no two lakes are the same. But trout feed in only two places where fish feed anywhere in the world: shoreline edges and the top foot of the surface. If the trout are not in any of those two spots, then that means they're under and not feeding. If a trout is deeper than six feet, it's not eating; it's just sitting there like a brick. Some anglers think that because they catch fish at 10 feet, that's where trout are feeding. But that's a stillwater fly fishing myth. Trout move to eat, and they always go where food is most concentrated—shoreline edges and the surface. Here's why:  Food gathers in specific areas. Insects emerge from the bottom and stop at the surface.  Shoreline edges are loaded with food because that's where the proto plankton and zooplankton live. Big fish don't share space with small ones. They move shallow when there's wind or darkness for cover. 18:47 - Most anglers think fish come up from behind and chase a fly. But that's a myth. Fish hit from the side. If you check where the hook lands, it's almost always in the corner of the mouth. Here's how to take advantage of that: Show them the profile view. Fish moving along the shore want to see the whole fly—head, tail, color, and movement. Don't strip too far. If you pull more than five feet, the fish won't follow. If you hook one, stay put. There's probably more fish nearby. The Truth About Where Trout Go 22:17 - Some say trout move way out deep when the sun gets high. That's a myth. Why would a fish waste all that energy just to come back later? They don't. They move just 8 to 10 feet out, right under where you are! Why Water Temperature Matters Water temperature is the number one thing that moves fish. Spring fishing can be tough in reservoirs because the water chemistry is out of sync. When lakes are drawn down in the fall, nutrients and oxygen levels take time to rebuild. That's why the best fishing often doesn't start until late summer or fall. Here are some key things to remember:  In the spring, reservoirs that are drawn down don't fish well. Cold water and low oxygen levels stress fish, making them harder to catch. Fish like a temperature range of 55-62°F for optimal feeding. The top water layers heat up in warmer months, but fish stay at the cooler, oxygen-rich depths. Why Fish Take on the Pause 31:29 - Fish don't always hit when you're pulling. They strike when you pause. Here's why: As you retrieve, your fly moves up in the water. When you pause, it drops. That's when the fish makes its move. But instead of chasing, it simply opens its mouth and sucks the fly in. Today on Not Serious Wine Chats, Pete and John and I sit down with Jannine Rickards (Ngāpuhi & Ngāi the Rangi) from Huntress Wines. I first met Jannine when she was the winemaker at Urlar in Gladstone, a sub-region of the Wairarapa. This part of the country clearly resonates for Jannine as Huntress shifts from a side hustle to the main act. This wonderful wahine still sources fruit and makes wine in this North Island neighbourhood. The name Huntress comes from an extremely pragmatic, utterly pedestrian point of reference for Jannine herself is a huntress. A childhood spent on a sheep and beef farm in the Coromandel nurtured an understanding for animal husbandry and welfare, alongside an innate awareness of the restorative powers of spending time in nature.Her own grandfather passed on traditions such as ancient practices of net fishing for flounder, and her father shared his passion for growing a garden that can feed the family. So it shouldn't come as such a surprise that Jannine grew up to combine the two by becoming a deeply respectful hunter and a massive advocate for a plentiful table laden with homegrown goodness. These things are, in essence, Jannine and factors that contribute to how she sees wine holistically fitting into our lives.Jannine's practice across her winemaking, her gardening and her hunting is based in Te Ao Māori, where land and spirit are inextricably connected. One thing's for sure Huntress wines sure do taste like they summon the powers of Ra, the sun and the mystical whims of Te Whenua, the land, in a magical balance that best reflects the place they come from. There is something of a nomadic story to the Huntress wines. With no vineyards under ownership or her own winemaking space, Jannine leans into the opportunities that exist around her. Much of the wine story is held up by community and people underneath it, and Jannine's story especially represents this as she sources fruit and facilities available to her each season. It means she must work hard across a lot of levels of the business and sure, one day she'd love to put down roots somewhere of her own but for now this huntress is happy just making the most of what Papatuanuku, Earth Mother and Ranginui, Sky Father have to offer from wherever she finds herself. Luckily for us that the universe provides so we can smash a glass or two of Jannine's explorative and most excellent wines. So grab your tramping boots, put on your waterproof parker and make sure the singlet next to your skin is made from New Zealand wool. Pan-Am pilot Byron Rickards was surrounded by soldiers and told he had become the prisoner of a revolutionary organisation shortly after landing in Arequipa, Peru on 21 February 1931 - the first recorded aircraft hijack in history. For every story of difficulty expanding beyond a single truck with leased owner-operators, there's probably more than one tale of success. The latter's been the story the last several years for owner-operator Josh Rickards, whose Rickards Transportation Services business as of late November was up to a total of five owners leased on in addition to himself, still also behind the wheel much of the time. In something of a growth mode now for a time, Rickards has come to specialize in part in the entertainment industry, supporting concert tours and often enough working in tandem with larger entities for the larger tours. His owner-operator journey started back in his boyhood, with a particular mentor in an owner-operator he's long been happy to call his Uncle in Michael Paul Visbeek, out of Northern California and since passed on. Rickards tells the tale of a kid's inspiration grown in a Kenworth W9 with a Cat and an 18 speed, then a detour as a young man through hip-hop music promotion and marketing, and on to true trucking success. What's Rickards looking forward to for the new year? He just bought a brand-new Western Star you'll hear him talk about in this Overdrive Radio episode, and he's bringing on two more owner-operators as he continues on the goal of sustainable growth. As he told me last week, asked about any "New Year's Resolutions" for the business in 2025, “it's not just about growing in numbers,” he said. Anybody with good credit can buy a truck. I dagens avsnitt av Beroendepodden har jag äran att gästas av Rickard Forshäll, en man med en historia som inspirerar och berör. Många av er kanske känner igen honom från TV-programmet Mot alla odds, men i dagens avsnitt får vi höra hans resa på djupet. Rickard växte upp i vad han beskriver som en helt vanlig familj. Skolan gick okej, men han blev utsatt för mobbning, något som han själv tror bidrog till att han senare hamnade i ett tungt drogberoende och en kriminell livsstil. Trots att han testade alkohol sent i livet gick det snabbt utför när han provade amfetamin för första gången. Där började en 20 år lång kamp med missbruk och återkommande fängelsevistelser. Men 2006 kom vändpunkten. Efter flera behandlingar och otaliga gånger bakom låsta dörrar nådde Rickard sin botten. Med hjälp av en behandling och ett 12-stegsprogram lyckades han bryta sig fri från beroendet och påbörjade ett helt nytt kapitel i livet. Rickard började plugga, utbildade sig till ingenjör, och fann glädje i träning, dykning och resor. Men livet prövade honom på nytt. Efter fem år i nykterhet var han med om en arbetsplatsolycka där han förlorade sitt ena ben under knät. Trots detta vägrade han ge upp. Genom att sätta upp träningsmål tog han sig tillbaka – starkare än någonsin. Bara månader efter att ha fått börja träna igen sprang han Midnattsloppet, och därefter Vasaloppet. Det var dock cyklingen som blev hans stora passion, och med nio Vätternrundor bakom sig är Rickards drivkraft och styrka inget annat än imponerande. En annan dröm som Rickard haft hela sitt liv var att bli pappa – en dröm som gick i uppfyllelse vid 48 års ålder. Tillsammans med sitt barn lever han idag ett aktivt och spännande liv, fullt av äventyr och glädje. Rickards historia är ett levande bevis på att det går att ta sig igenom även de tuffaste utmaningar i livet och komma ut på andra sidan starkare än någonsin.
