The transition of wealth between generations has put the spotlight squarely on fiduciary roles. With the rapid changes in the financial services space, directed trustees and independent administrative trust companies have exploded in popularity. The Evolving World of Directed Trustees Most advisors, wealth management firms, and clients under-appreciate the responsibility and risks of proper trusteeship. They remember a culture and business model that existed decades ago. These days, individuals trustees usually can't handle the rigors of the job and law firms are leaving the space for liability reasons. Finally, in an environment where clients want more flexibility and control, the large bank-owned trust departments provide a cumbersome experience and high turnover, With this in mind, modern estate planning has unbundled traditional investment, administrative and distribution trustee roles. There is a huge appetite for jurisdictional planning and best-in-class providers. With all of this change, it is confusing for the advisor to know who is responsible for what and how much it should cost. The Problem for RIAs RIA's do not have the resources to advise or service clients with this complexity. The administration and oversight of these structures is a distraction. Building a trust company to solve this problem does not make business sense in a private equity-backed RIA aggregation environment. Moreover, using conflicted trust providers is out of the question for fear of putting client relationships at risk. An increasingly popular option for RIAs and wealthy families is the use of directed trustees and the independent administrative trust company. CHRISTOPHER HOLTBY is a co-founder of an independent trust company that works specifically with wealth advisors and directed trustees. Not only do we highlight the best practices for identifying and partnering with an administrative trustee, but we also discuss the typical workflow between an RIAs and directed trustees. Chris' Background with Directed Trustees How RIAs work with directed trustees and an independent trust company: 1/ What are the basic requirements of independent trust company? 2/ Accordingly, which "value adds" should RIA firms should look for? 3/ Are there key attributes to spot when deciding to work/partner with an independent trust company? 4/ Lastly, should you be aware of any "Gotchas" in the space? One of the most frustrating moments in any investor or saver's life is when you figure out that you fell prey to a "gotcha" you didn't expect and either lose money, opportunity, or both. Even if your favorite financial tool, strategy or advisor doesn't mean to inflict a "gotcha" on you, because we often don't know what we don't know, we use tools or people inefficiently, causing damage to ourselves we didn't expect. Today we talk about intended and unintended "gotchas" in financial products with three people who know and who've seen many problems firsthand. All of them are Certified Financial Planners, and all three are hosts of great podcasts. Shannah Game (Everyone's Talkin' Money), Roger Whitney (Retirement Answer Man), and our very own OG debate and discuss many of the nuanced (and sometimes not-so-nuanced) "gotchas" in investments, insurances, financial planning, and more. That's not all though. Of course we take a break halfway through for our weekly trivia contest between our contributors. Today? Doug's building bridges! You'll have to hear it yourself and maybe guess your answer. Can you beat our contestants? Are you a Swiftie? Here's why you're a scammer's big target online.
It has been years, actually, over a decade since we changed banks for our high-yield savings account (HYSA). But this is the year, I had a bad experience. I'm actually kind of embarrassed about it, but more on that later. Long story short, we were not being valued as loyal customers and I refuse to stay with a bank that treats me unfairly. Housekeeping note: I have no affiliate or partnership relationships with any of the banks mentioned. This is just my own experience and opinion. There are no referral or affiliate links in this article. A Quick Backstory and What Happened Originally, we'd started our first high-yield savings account with a company called ING Direct. I'd spent quite a bit of time researching different banks and settled on ING Direct because they had great rates, I could easily open several accounts, nickname my accounts (this actually wasn't that common 10+ years ago), and their customer service was great. Fast forward, they were purchased by Capital One and rebranded as CapitalOne 360 Savings. Okay, no problem. Customer service was still great, rates were great (or so I thought), no worries. I was checking my accounts and renaming one for a goal we've established in conjunction with Money Day this year. I noticed my interest rate on my accounts was 0.3% - not the 4.35% that Capital One shows on the site. I called and they said I had a “legacy product” and would need to reopen my accounts in order to get the current rates. Needless to say, I was pissed! If I have to open brand new accounts, I'll be opening them with a different bank. The hunt begins. My Criteria for High-Yield Savings Accounts I am very particular about my high-yield savings accounts – up to a point. I'm very aware of my tendency to analysis paralysis. I'm a natural overthinker, but once I settle on a decision, I generally feel very confident about it. There's also a couple other reasons why I'm not too particular about some things but more particular about others. Chasing high fees or jumping on the “trendy” HYSAs can get you into trouble or end up not being quite as awesome as the marketing makes it seem. Because I tend to go overboard comparing, I have to set my criteria and not get too wrapped up in the tiny details. In reality, when I set clear criteria, there's likely only a few banks that will fit the bill. Here's the main things I look for in a high-yield savings account: 1. Competitive Rates 2. No Fees! 3. Ability to Open Multiple Accounts 4. Checking Account Available at Same Bank 5. Quality Customer Service 6. No Hidden Rules and “Gotchas”

This Episodes Questions: Hello Guy, JJ, and Nathan, I was wondering if you could discuss the idea that the 3d printing "hobby" has come full circle from the early days of the Stratasys machines to the current crop of machines from BambuLab, Creality, Qidi, Flashforge and the myriad other manufacturers that aren't making "Open Source" machines. Also what are you thoughts about keeping some parts closed while open sourcing other parts, i.e. BambuLab Slicer VS their firmware. I know Guy couldn't give a crap, as long as it prints, but what effect do you think this "partial Open Source-ing" will have on the hobby long term? I mean no one cares that their microwave isn't open source, so does it even matter? Thanks for the podcast and your opinions. -John D Strand Howdy howdy! First off, love the show, thank you for the awesome content. So I'm semi new to printing, semi tech literate, very mechanically inclined, just as a back story haha. Anyway I have an e3v2, been upgrading it a bit and I am at the inevitable crossroads of hotends. I believe y'all have touched on some but I haven't seen a complete episode on them ( or at least titled as such, sorry still catching up on all of them ). So here are my parameters, e3v2, converted to direct drive, cr touch ( with no reservations on moving it ) and I would like to print hot materials. Sorry for the long winded letter but any help or perspectives would be great! Thank you in advance. Justin Hi guys, Thanks for such a great podcast! My 2 part question is this, I have an old Qidi Xplus that I modded with the icarus 2 mod from Printables. I absolutely love it. However, recently, I needed to change the heartbreak. I am using a Phaetus Dragon standard flow with an Orbitor 2 extruder. I somehow managed to damage the 4 tiny posts that go into the dragon. I have ordered replacements from numerous places online like Ali Express and Triangle Labs. For some weird reason, I have been having issues with receiving these after ordering multiple times. Other items arrive, just not these stupid posts. So I was wondering if you knew of a hack I could use to replace them with? Such a strange design in my opinion. Any advice is appreciated. I now understand why Nathan threw one of these Qidi printers in the trash. If you have time to answer this, I would also like to put a better main board in this machine. Any suggestions? Cheers and thank you in advance! Jesse from Burbank,CA.

Gotchas, paybacks and vendettas do not make for a legislative agenda. They may appeal to the Freedom Caucus, but most Americans want Congress to address the important issues that affect their lives. Not raising the debt ceiling is another act of political theater that will not solve our public debt problem but only compound it. Speaker McCarthy needs to develop a plan to address perpetual deficits and unsustainable levels of public debt. In this podcast, the Edifice of Trust host, Victor Bolles, looks into the causes of continuing deficits and what it will take to put America's fiscal house in order.

Possibly the most classic adjustment across all of tastytrade is to roll the untested side - so what are we getting and what are we giving up when we do this? Generally speaking, rolling the untested side reduces your overall risk in the position, but it does expose you to a potential whipsaw, if the stock reverses back quickly. However, because our main priority with undefined-risk strategies is to reduce risk first, rolling the untested side when the time calls for it is our go-to move.

[00:30] Biden's Drug Cocktail (8 minutes) Joe Biden's doctor has stopped Biden's heart medication so he can take Paxlovid, a COVID medication—despite FDA warnings that this action can cause blood clots and Dr. Fauci's admission that he relapsed badly after taking the drug. A year and a half ago, Joe Biden said that if he and Vice President Kamala Harris ever had an irreconcilable moral difference, he would “develop a disease and resign.” What is going on here? [9:05] COVID Double Standard Is Pure Theater (19 minutes) When COVID-positive Donald Trump took his mask off while standing alone on the White House balcony in October 2020, the media frenzy was hysterical. Now, a maskless Joe Biden assures us that he's fine, despite having COVID—and the propaganda media seems utterly unconcerned about the virus or even the president's health. [27:46] January 6 ‘Gotchas' (9 minutes) The January 6 insurrection investigation is packed with laughable “gotcha” moments—outtakes from a video President Trump recorded on January 7, Sen. Josh Hawley jogging slowly as the Capitol Police evacuated the Senate chamber, and so on. These clips are “horrifying” evidence of a “rolling coup,” according to the talking heads on cable news. Meanwhile, the actual violence and crime filling the streets of America is ignored. [36:55] Antiochus Versus Jeroboam (4 minutes) It is becoming increasingly obvious that there are two strong forces in American politics: Donald Trump and Barack Obama, who is currently enjoying the third term of his presidency. PJ Media recently referred to Obama as the “lightbringer” and suggested that he could run for an official third term if the Democrats changed the Constitution. Also, Axios was horrified to report that when President Trump returns, he and his supporters plan to purge the “deep state” and fill political positions with loyalists faithful to the Trump agenda. [41:14] God Reaches Out to His Youth (14 minutes) America is experiencing a shocking epidemic of crime—much of it fueled by young people. This is a striking contrast to the joyful, uplifting activity keeping our teens busy and happy at SEP right now.

In this episode, I'm rejoined by veterinary attorney Justin Weaver of Oberman Law Firm. Justin has an extremely high concentration of veterinary clients and is a well of knowledge on all things legal and veterinary medicine (except for litigation as he lets you know). In this broad conversation, we build on our episode #41 to help a current owner think through a practice sale. An update on the market for veterinary practice demand - seeing a little slowdown. The backdrop on the ingredients for a sale environment. Scheduling and timing of a sale. Non-competes and a sale. The challenges of actually proceeding with a life-changing transaction. Private vs. Corporate and what the future may hold. What's the actual valuation of the stock/equity doctors often get.
