Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 6 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. In our one and only segment this week, our interviewers Sarah Brown'21, a Psychology major/CCI minor and Emily Cooper'21 a Business Administration major/CCI minor chat with Director of Marketing at the POP Network, Lindsey Meriwether. Originally starting out in film production, Lindsey discusses her career trajectory leading to the world of Marketing. Sarah and Emily hear what it is like to be part of a major re-branding process, and the reality of when it is all hands on deck for a marketing campaign. She also discusses the ins and outs of managing the promotion of a series like Schitt's Creek, including attending premieres, reaching out to influencers and meeting famed actors Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Catherine O'Hara. In addition, Lindsey gives some career tips, including that sometimes your first choice of career isn't the one you end up with, but that's ok, because everything you learn along the way becomes a new tool for you to utilize.

Our guest today is actor and director Christine Lakin, Most would remember her from TGI FRIDAY's "Step By Step" as Al Lambert. She and her co-stars ruled Friday nights with this fun filled family show. But since then she has not stopped. From "The Goldbergs" on ABC, to a million other shows, she has had her hand in it all, also ruling motherhood, podcasting and more. We get into all of that, if she would do anything differently, balancing life and career and much more! Her bio explains it all the best! Taken from her amazing website! You’d probably best remember me from a 90’s TV show called “Step By Step” (yep, I was that tomboy Al in the backwards hat) but more recently I produced and starred on the comedy “Hollywood Darlings” alongside my childhood friends Beverley Mitchell (“7th Heaven”) and Jodie Sweetin (“Full-er House”) for the Pop Network. If you love “Family Guy” you’d know my voice as Joyce Kinney. If you’re a gamer, I’m Peebee in “Mass Effect, Andromeda”. If you listen to podcasts, I have my own! It’s called Worst Ever Podcast, where my co-host Alaa and I talk to all kinds of celebrities about their worst ever moments in life. It’s good times. (And might just make you feel better about your own worst moments)I love my work but it is a constant hustle and why I’m seriously juggling multiple careers while trying to balance home life. I’m sure a lot of you can relate. My blog is an outlet to share some of my passions like cooking and travel but also just start a conversation with you guys about some of the struggles trying to “have it all” entails.I’m so grateful for my family and the time I’m able to spend raising my daughter Georgia. But momm-ing is hard and sometimes I just ask myself if 4pm is too early for a glass of rose. (anyone with me here?) I’m fairly irreverent and may use a curse word here or there so try to not get too offended. Thanks for sharing and reading and I hope I can make you laugh now and again too.www.brettallanshow.comHave a question, email us below!openmicguest@gmail.comBe sure to follow us on social media for all the latest podcast updates!Twittertwitter.com/@brettsopenmicIGinstagram.com/brettsopenmicFacebookFacebook.com/openmicpodcastwww.brettallanshow.com

Do you ensure that you are in good health? You may be eating healthy foods, exercising, taking supplements, but do you genuinely know what's going on with your body?  Our bodies are made up of complex and interconnected systems. The things we think can help our body may not be the case. As entrepreneurs, being in good health is important because an illness can break any business and life apart.   In this episode, Maria Whalen joins us to talk about dangerous misconceptions we have around health. She shares the five pillars of good health that we need to focus on instead. We need to be careful with what we ingest and put on our bodies; these can change our body's foundational systems.  Maria also shares her journey as an entrepreneur and her experience with illnesses that led her to advocate for the good health of entrepreneurs all around the world. If you want to learn how to take more care of your health, this episode is for you!  Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover the different misconceptions we have surrounding health.  Understand the foundational pillars of good health.  Learn what makes an entrepreneur successful and why we need to keep moving forward.  Resources Check out EWG to learn how to buy healthier personal care products and food!  Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Killing the Victim Before the Victim Kills You by Derek M. Watson, Larry Pinci, and Daniel L. Tocchini Reality for a Change by Ennio Salucci Contact Maria through the email support@intentionalnetwork.com.  You can also follow her work on Intentional Network. Episode Highlights The Problem with Health Perceptions Maria shares her hardships with illnesses and her experience with Western medicine.  The more she studied to cure herself, the more she saw problems with the perception of health and medicine. There is a lot of marketing hype around green smoothies and the likes.  It's dangerous to think that you're already healthy just because you eat and drink certain things.  Five Pillars of Good Health Maria hopes to share ways of never becoming sick.  No one is teaching how our body works. It is why there are a lot of misconceptions about health.  We need to know the foundations of good health first.  The five foundational pillars are the immune system, hormonal system, DNA, physical structure, and mental-emotional component. Imbalance Is the Source of Sickness Ask yourself these questions every time you are not in good health: What am I doing that's in my body's way? What is it I'm not giving my body that it's asking for? Once you identify the culprit, you can fix the source and damage.  How can we cause an imbalance in our DNA? Tune in to Maria's answers in the full episode.  Is Detox Helpful?  Maria shares cleansing and detox should be done in the right context.  Everything needs to be in proper order, just like in business.  Don't take shortcuts towards good health. The skin is the largest organ in your body, and anything you put on it goes straight to the bloodstream.  How can we be more conscious about our food and products? Listen to the full episode to hear more.   Learn the Way Your Body Works  All of us experience some form of inflammation. We need to learn why this happens.  When we want to nourish our bones, it's not about taking more calcium. Taking calcium can actually cause more harm.  We need to understand the physiology of our body as a system.  The Illusion of Feeling Good  People often disregard the foundational pillars because they already feel 'good.'  Don't wait until your body breaks down before you start working on your foundation. Don't claim to be in good health when you don't know what's happening beneath the surface. When influencing your hormones, you should understand that prescriptions work differently for people.  Tune in to the episode to hear about influencing your hormones!  Interconnection of Systems Your body is made up of different systems.  You cannot isolate a single system; you will need to address the whole system.  For example, losing weight needs to be strategic: suddenly losing weight will cause toxins typically stored in fat tissue to be released into your body. How to Become Successful Becoming successful takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.  You also need to have a vision that's big enough to push you through the pain of transformation.  A lot of successful people came to be due to a sense of urgency and need.  Common Attitude of Entrepreneurs One important skill to master is smart networking.  Become invested in other people's products and events.  Build strong relationships no matter what you get out of it.  Make sure to provide people value before asking for anything in return.  Get out there and do the work. Meet people outside of your usual circles.  Balancing Work and Life When balancing work and life, you need to look at the counterbalance.  Make sure to recover in between the times of hard work.  Keep yourself in check, so you don't burn out.  Moving Forward Keep moving and failing forward.  Don't dwell on yesterday's mistakes because you need to keep moving.  When you focus on mistakes, you'll tend to stop and get left behind.  About Maria Maria Whalen is the pioneer of Invincible Wellness™, a system that gives people the power to handle almost anything when it comes to health. My guest today is Amanda Newman. Amanda has served as Executive Director of Varsity Vocals for more than a decade, dedicating her career to promoting, encouraging, and providing unique performance opportunities for young musicians. Amanda has extensive experience producing educational and entertaining concerts, festivals, and competitions, as well as handling recorded music distribution and production.   In her capacity as Executive Director, Amanda has brokered high-profile licensing and development agreements, facilitating the use of the ICCA brand and related properties in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect as well as the development of Sing It On, a docu-series produced by CORE Media Group (American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) that follows college a cappella groups on their journey through the ICCA tournament. Amanda serves as Co-Executive Producer on the series, which debuted in 2015 on the Pop Network.   Under Amanda’s leadership, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) tournament has more than tripled in size and currently features 3,500 singers from more than 300 competing groups each year. Amanda was also responsible for the creation and development of the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) in 2006, a program that has significantly expanded since its inception and has helped foster a passion for a cappella in thousands of high school students.   And this year, Varsity Vocals created The Open, a competition that encourages singers to bring together groups of any age, experience or origin to form a cappella “dream teams.” By giving them a stage — and a cash prize of $25,000 to jump start their professional career, our programs encourage young people to sing together throughout their lives. The finals of the Open are being held September 23 at Carnegie Hall in NYC. Head to https://varsityvocals.com/events/ for tickets.   Since 2008, Amanda has been responsible the selection of tracks for the albums BOCA: Best of College A Cappella and BOHSA: Best of High School A Cappella, along with the compilation founder Deke Sharon. Amanda manages and oversees the coordination, production, licensing and distribution of both albums.   Amanda originally joined Varsity Vocals in 2003, as ICCA Midwest Producer. In college, Amanda was an ICCA competitor herself, serving as business manager and choreographer for the University of Illinois vocal jazz a cappella group, No Strings Attached. Under her leadership, the group earned second place and accolades for Outstanding Choreography at ICCA Midwest Semifinals, as well as their first track on BOCA.   Alright, without further ado, let’s welcome Amanda to the show.   Varsity Vocals - https://varsityvocals.com   Interested in a coaching session? -  http://recordingacappella.com/coaching   25% OFF Video Courses Pre-Order Sale -  http://recordingacappella.com/courses/   Win a $50 Amazon Gift Card by filling out my survey -  http://recordingacappella.com/survey   10 Ways to Improve your Acappella Recording - http://recordingacappella.com/podcast
