A new episode of Elpodcasters with Alaa Abu Diab, a Palestinian stand-up comedian from Hebron, in a different kind of conversation about comedy, Palestine, Jerusalem, identity, homesickness, and using laughter as a way to understand reality and deal with life. In this episode, we talk about Alaa's life in Palestine, and how the Palestinian reality differs from one city to another because of the divisions and different restrictions on movement, residency, and identity. Alaa explains what it means to grow up in Jerusalem, and how the city shapes your awareness, personality, and way of dealing with people and the world, within a daily reality that is complicated but still full of resilience and normal life. We also talk about how he started stand-up comedy after experiencing homesickness and loneliness, and how the videos he made to feel closer to people back home eventually brought him back to the stage and helped him discover his path in comedy. The conversation goes into the difference between truth and exaggeration, how a comedian builds a show, and how different Arabic dialects and cultures can change the way an audience receives a joke. The discussion also expands into Palestinian and Arab comedy, the impact of social media on comedians, the difference between scripted comedy and crowd work, the boundaries of humor in the Arab world, and Alaa's experience in Egypt. اسمعوا البودكاسترز على | Listen to El-Podcasters on Spotify - https://anchor.fm/elpodcasters Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/eg/podcast/el-podcasters/id1633419184 Anghami - https://play.anghami.com/podcast/1029463712 El-Podcasters Social Media | منصات التواصل الإجتماعي للبودكاسترز: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/elpodcasters Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@elpodcasters Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/elpodcasters Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/company/elpodcasters/ X - https://www.twitter.com/elpodcasters Snapchat - https://snapchat.com/t/3Zbo2vzS Bassel Alzaro - https://www.instagram.com/basselalzaro https://www.facebook.com/BasselAlzaroX https://snapchat.com/t/CoWlatfk Karim Rihan - https://www.instagram.com/karimrihann Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Alaa Bushehri, Head of Emerging Market Debt at BNP Paribas Asset Management, joins Tellimer Founder and CEO Duncan Wales to examine why investors in emerging markets remain invested through successive waves of global volatility. Drawing on Alaa's more than two decades with the BNP Paribas Group, the conversation examines how improved asset class fundamentals, stronger central bank credibility and diversified financing channels have kept spreads contained and sustained investor confidence. They explore the divergence between emerging market and developed market monetary cycles, with EM central banks demonstrating an unprecedented willingness to ease independently of the Fed. The episode also covers the structural case for local currency over hard currency, the outlook for de-dollarisation, idiosyncratic opportunities from Brazil and Colombia to Egypt, and how EM policymakers are better positioned to deploy fiscal tools ahead of monetary ones in navigating inflationary pressures. The Emerging Markets Podcast by Tellimer – Emerging Markets, Connected. Since the war in Sudan began in 2023, grassroots, volunteer-led mutual aid groups – the Emergency Rooms (ERRs) – have delivered vital humanitarian assistance and played a key role in safeguarding civilian life across the country in the face of the devastating conflict. The work of the ERRs is grounded in the Sudanese tradition of 'nafeer', an Arabic word meaning collective action. Less documented is the critical role Sudanese women play in responding to humanitarian needs arising from the conflict. They are at the forefront of providing medical assistance and psychosocial support, creating safe spaces for children and responding to gender-based violence. In this episode, we are joined by Alaa Hassan Taris and Khalid Gurashi, representatives of the ERRs who were in London to receive the Chatham House Prize in recognition of their crucial role in delivering humanitarian support during the ongoing war in Sudan. Dr Eva Khair, founder of the Sudan Transnational Consortium, also joins the conversation with Alaa and Khalid to discuss how vital grassroots-led responses are within the wider international humanitarian picture and highlight the imperative for continued advocacy on the global stage. Find more information about the ERRs and how to support their work here. Egypt's January 25 revolution was 15 years ago. Since then many of its young leaders have been persecuted and the history of what happened distorted or denied. After spending over a decade in prison, the activist and writer Alaa Abd El-Fattah was finally released from prison in September, and allowed to travel outside Egypt in December. We are re-running an episode we did about Alaa's 2021 book You Have Not Yet Been Defeated, and other writing on the Egyptian uprising and its aftermath. Show Notes Alaa Abd El-Fattah's You Have Not Yet Been Defeated was translated by a collective, and is out from Fizcarraldo Editions in the UK. A US edition is forthcoming in March 2022 from Seven Stories Press. There is also an Italian translation by Monica Ruocco.Ahmed Douma's second poetry collection, Curly, was set for release in September 2021 by Dar Maraya. But on the eve of its publication, state security officials confiscated copies of the book. Read Elliott Colla and Ahmed Hassan's co-translations of a poem from this collection, and an excerpt from Douma's “Blasphemy,” on ArabLit. Basma Abdelaziz's Here is a Body, which chronicles the Rabaa massacre and its aftermath, was published in Jonathan Wright's translation by Hoopoe Fiction.

Sudan's brutal two-year war has entered a new phase. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has seized control of the entire Darfur region, ousting the Sudanese army from its last stronghold. The conflict has killed over 40,000 people and displaced more than 14 million, creating a humanitarian crisis. The capture of el-Fasher, North Darfur's capital, raises fears of Sudan splitting again, nearly 15 years after South Sudan's independence. The RSF, led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has roots in the Darfur genocide and has been accused of atrocities. Dagalo's forces have expanded their power and influence, leading to a power struggle with Sudan's army chief that plunged Sudan into war. On today's show, guest host Thandisizwe Chimurenga talks with Alaa Suliman from the Sudanese Association of Northern California on the ongoing crisis in Sudan. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Sudan News w/ Alaa Suliman from SANC appeared first on KPFA.

France recognises Palestinian statehood but evacuations from Gaza are still suspended. French savings are at an all-time high, reflecting uncertainty about the future. And the story of the ten-day week put in place after the French Revolution. Evacuations from Gaza to France were suspended on 1 August after a Gazan student in Paris was found to have published antisemitic social media posts before her arrival. The suspension has left applicants for the largely state-funded Pause programme, which welcomes scientists and artists facing persecution, in limbo. French and international writers and Palestine solidarity groups have denounced it as "collective punishment". Gazan rap musician Abou Joury, who arrived in France in January, talks about finding safety and financial stability. Meanwhile French fruit farmer Mathieu Yon – whose friend and "sister", the poet Alaa al-Qatrawi, is currently stuck in Gaza – has taken up position in front of the Foreign Ministry, pushing for evacuations to resume. (Listen @3'50'') A record 19 percent of France's GDP is now in savings accounts – the highest level outside of the exceptionally high rate recorded during the Covid pandemic. While the French have always had a tendency to squirrel money away, sociologist Jeanne Lazarus says the current increase is a sign people are feeling anxious about the economy and the long-term viability of France's famously supportive social welfare system. (Listen @22'20'') The story of how French revolutionairies overturned not only the monarchy but time itself, by instituting the Republican calendar from 22 September 1792. This week, I'm speaking with the brilliant Ibtisam Azem—novelist, journalist, and storyteller—about her powerful and thought-provoking book, The Book of Disappearance.Set across 1948 Palestine, in Jaffa and also Tel Aviv, this novel asks a haunting question: what if all the Palestinians suddenly disappeared? Through the intertwining narratives of Alaa, a young Palestinian man who vanishes without a trace, and Ariel, an Israeli, liberal Zionist journalist who finds Alaa's diaries, the novel explores themes of memory, identity, and erasure. It is both a deeply personal story and a profound political meditation on history, belonging, and loss.In this conversation, we delve into the layers of metaphor and meaning in The Book of Disappearance, the historical and political realities that shape the narrative, and the ongoing situation in Palestine. We also reflect on storytelling as resistance, the role of literature in preserving memory, and the weight of silence in both personal and collective histories. This is a powerful and necessary discussion, and I hope it sparks reflection and conversation for you as well.--I hope you loved listening to this episode and found things that will stay with you. I'd love to hear from you, so please do reach out on social media and don't forget to like, subscribe and leave a review as it can really help.
