The focus of this podcast episode is a critical examination of the film "A River Runs Through It," directed by Robert Redford and featuring Brad Pitt. We delve into the intricate dynamics between the two brothers portrayed in the film, exploring how their distinct personalities and life choices reflect broader themes of familial expectation and personal rebellion. Throughout our discussion, we express varying opinions on the film's pacing and the effectiveness of its narrative structure, particularly the use of voiceovers, which some of us find superfluous. Additionally, we share our sentiment regarding the performances of the cast, particularly noting the contrasting presence of Brad Pitt against his co-stars. Ultimately, this episode serves as an analysis of the film's storytelling and character development, alongside our personal reflections on its impact and resonance.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

(Stereo Edition) Summer is nearly over and Paul and Eli do not want to waste a single sunny day, so it's time for another walkabout episode! This route, as chosen by Eli, is one they've been keen to do for a while and now it's their chance to tackle the length of the New River. The New River is an artificial waterway that opened in 1613 to deliver water in towards London from Hertfordshire. There is no way in hell that the Cheap Chaps will be able to do ALL of it, as its around 20 miles, but they can do a fat chunk of the middle of it! So, join Paul & Eli as they pack up a few snacks and begin weaving their way through North London, arguing, laughing and pontification before throwing in the towel! How far do they get? Will Paul ever be correct in Eli's eyes? Will the “self-heating” lunch work? Are jokes their forte? It's all revealed in this epic 150 minute walkabout adventure. The great river Euphrates. First named in Genesis as one of Eden's rivers, set by God in Genesis 15:18 as the northeastern boundary of the promised land is shrinking to record lows. As its waters recede, the river is surrendering secrets long buried beneath its flow: ancient artifacts, sacred symbols, and the remains of civilizations that once ruled the biblical world. These are not merely historical curiosities, they are physical evidence that confirms the Bible's truth and provides living signposts pointing toward prophecies yet to be fulfilled. In this gripping episode of The Last Christian Radio Show, we take you to the river's edge where Christian grave markers carved with crosses rise from cracked earth, their inscriptions faint but still bearing witness to the faith of those who stood for Christ centuries ago. We walk through the ruins of ancient house-churches, where fragments of painted plaster still display scenes of Jesus healing and baptizing, and we uncover Hebrew-inscribed stones from synagogues that once served Jewish communities in exile along this mighty waterway. We'll examine clay seals imprinted with biblical-era symbols, Bronze Age cylinder seals depicting idol worship and trade caravans from Abraham's world, corroded arrowheads from armies that once marched toward Israel, and massive stone mooring rings that tethered ships to the empires of Assyria, Babylon, and Rome. We'll even look at everyday items such as loom weights, storage jars, and fishing hooks. Silent remnants of a world that believed it would last forever, just as many today assume the present age will continue unchanged. Every artifact is more than an object, it is a message. Together, they tell a story of God's faithfulness to His promises, His judgments on nations, and His sovereign control over history. And as we connect these discoveries to Revelation 16:12, we will see how the drying of this God-appointed river is setting the stage for the final movements of prophecy. The Euphrates' waters are retreating. History is emerging from the mud. Prophecy is coming into sharper focus. And the call to prepare for the soon return of Jesus Christ has never been more urgent.

River Toussaint Rabbitte is the frontwoman of wht.rbbt.obj, a favorite artist of this podcast, and she’s getting ready to release a solo single called “Put Down For Love” - “a slow-burning Pop/R&B ballad that drips with passion, submission, and the intoxicating pull of obsession.” In short, it’s a whole vibe and a stunning piece of music. River joined me for a chat in front of Tuscan Market & Wine Shop (141 W Wing St, Arlington Heights, IL 60005), and Tuscan owner Tracy jumped in the back seat with a Tuscan Heat pizza (Basil Pesto Sauce, Smoked Gouda, Mozzarella, Italian Sausage and Hot Giardiniera) to share. The Tuscan Heat is a remarkably well-balanced slice of pizza. If you’re in the northwest burbs and looking for a perfect, friendly, chill place to enjoy a glass of wine or cold beer, Tuscan Market is your new place. In addition to talking about “Put Down for Love,” River and I talked about her provocative lyrics, a Car Con Carne “Easter egg” that I caught in a recent wht.rbbt.obj performance, the forthcoming wht.rbbt.obj vinyl release, her approach to vocals, and what’s next for wht.rbbt.obj. ## Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. A fly fisherman goes to part of the river where the trout are feeding, uses a fly that mimics the insect hatching at that time, and times their cast to land just-so.A marketer goes where their target audience is, posts content in-sync with what's trending, and times their campaign to land just-so. It's that same idea of tuning into the media landscape and knowing your audience that will land you the big fish. There are so many marketing lessons we can take from fly fishing. And in this episode, we're tying the two together through an analysis of A River Runs Through It.With the help of our special guest, CMO Simpro Rachel Truair, we're talking about how rhythm and timing are everything, going where you're most likely to find success, and much more.About our guest, Rachel TruairRachel Truair is a seasoned marketing leader with over 15 years of experience in driving revenue and growth for high-growth startups and Fortune 100 enterprises. She combines foundational best practices from her corporate background with agile and innovative approaches from her scale up experience, leading and mentoring teams through successful exits in IPOs and acquisitions. Her teams have won the Forrester Return on Integration Award, the Oracle "Markie" Award, and nominated for the 6Sense Breakthrough Award.Currently, as the CMO of Simpro, a $120M+ ARR private equity-backed field service management software company headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, Rachel is responsible for aligning marketing strategy to business outcomes and creating predictable, scalable sources of revenue. She leverages her expertise in go to market strategy, account based marketing and leading global marketing teams to source pipeline driving ninety percent of Simpro's annual revenue. As an equestrian and fly fisherwoman, Rachel is passionate about conservation and the outdoors, serving on the non-profit board of the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center. She is a mom of two and holds a BA from St. Edward's University and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business. What B2B Companies Can Learn From A River Runs Through It:Rhythm and timing are everything. Marketing, like fishing, takes practice, skill and finesse. Rachel says when it comes to flyfishing, “ It's not about strength. It's not about muscling it into something. It's about understanding the rhythm and the timing. A lot of times you want to just try to get to the end and be really perfect at something and put all of your strength into it and throw it as far as you can. But the reality is that actually makes it worse. It makes it harder. And if you can start to learn the rhythm, the feel, the timing of it, you can really start to see improvement.” Go where you're most likely to have success. In other words, go where your target audience is. Whether that's social media, email, podcasts, or wherever. You're literally fishing for customers. Rachel says, ” You really need to focus on the areas where you have the highest probability for success and be testing and iterating within those areas. But you also have to believe that the fish are there, right? You have to know that this is the right area where they would be.  And you can't waste time on the areas where you don't have belief.”It's all about storytelling. We all know about big fish stories. With fishing, just like marketing, it's all about having a story to tell. Ian says, “It is about the thing that you can go tell other people and when you get to come back. Whether it's from an event or your podcast series, and you get to go back and everyone says, ‘What'd you get?' You have to have conviction. You go to the place, you try your best. And if you don't get all the leads or opportunities or whatever it is, that you get that story that you can go back and say, ‘Hey, this is why this was worth it. '” What's your story?  Quotes*”Cost per lead these days really doesn't mean anything. I could spend a dollar on 3,000 spam leads and that doesn't mean that I'm going to get any new sales or great deals out of it. What is hard is to measure the value of what you're spending money on that creates valuable, sustainable growth. And customers who love the product and have success with the product. That's really not just about spending certain money up front to attract those customers, but also following those customers in their journey and understanding. How are you going to make them successful?”*” You really need to focus on the areas where you have the highest probability for success and be testing and iterating within those areas. But you also have to believe that the fish are there, right? You have to know that this is the right area where they would be.  And you can't waste time on the areas where you don't have belief.”*”Marketing [like fishing] is about the story, it is about the thing that you can go tell other people and when you get to come back. Whether it's from an event or your podcast series, and you get to go back and everyone says, ‘What'd you get?' You have to have conviction. You go to the place, you try your best. It started as a glacier. Then, about 13,000 years ago, it was a trickle, then a stream, and eventually a rushing river meandering through the Olympic Peninsula. For thousands of years, life thrived off the ecosystem served by the Elwha River that fed into to the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Then it stopped. A century ago, a dam was built to harness the power of the water and convert it into electricity. The salmon that the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe relied on were cut off from their spawning grounds. Ten years ago, that dam was taken down. In this special reprise episode, we look at the impact of the dam removal and how life in and around the Elwha is fighting its way back.  This show would not be possible without listener support. Next year, for the first time in more than 100 years, farmers and ranchers across Montana’s Hi-Line region will face a summer without irrigation water. Normally, water from the St. Mary River is diverted into the Milk River, which runs through north-central Montana towns like Havre and Malta.  But the infrastructure that moved the water failed in June, and it won’t be repaired until the 2025 irrigating season is over. Agricultural producers say they face devastation.  By mid-August this year, the Milk River above Havre had run completely dry. That could be the norm for all of next summer.  With me today is Joshua Murdock, reporter for the Missoulian, who visited the St. Mary Canal to inspect damage, and who traveled the entire length of the Milk River affected by the loss of water.

When you hear the word "river," you probably picture a majestic body of water flowing through a natural habitat. Well, the LA River looks nothing like that. Most people who see it probably mistake it for a giant storm drain. It's a deep trapezoidal channel with steep concrete walls, and a flat concrete bottom. Los Angeles was founded around this river. But decades ago it was confined in concrete so that, for better or worse, the city could become the sprawling metropolis that it is today. All these years later the county is still grappling with the consequences of those actions.A River Runs Through Los Angeles

What do people who know and appreciate a place deeply see that I might not? The Mount Vernon Trail winds its way along the river, a combination national park and major commuter artery. It's a place I find myself frequently and I wondered: what am I not seeing in this place that is so familiar? The Trail is there because the Potomac River is there, an always-scenic but often-silent companion. What might I be missing? This is the second in a periodic series of shows in which we "walk a mile" in someone else's shoes, seeing the world through others' eyes. Episode #243: Kenneth Wong, a Burmese language teacher and translator, visited Thailand to connect with compatriots who have sought refuge there due to the conflict in Myanmar. While he enjoyed his stay in Mae Sot, a town with a significant Burmese presence, he soon realized that it was quite different for Burmese refugees: after a fraught journey across the Moei River to avoid capture, the community is plagued by fear, extortion by local authorities and a lack of prospects that keep many from even leaving their house, let along learning Thai. Despite these challenges, a strong Burmese community persists in Mae Sot, with hopes of returning home after political change. Kenneth reflects on the plight of previous generations of activists who remained in exile without assimilating, limiting their ability to aid current movements. He also notes instances of Thai kindness toward Burmese workers against the backdrop of a complicated, historical relationship. At the end of the day, Kenneth is anything if not optimistic. “I'm hopeful that some of the activists and refugees I met, even though they are in a desperate situation with an uncertain future, they also turning around and helping people who are less fortunate, and helping people who arrive fresh off the boat as it were,” he says in closing. “I have nothing but admiration for them, for the fact that even though they are struggling, they seek reward in selfless acts. I think these are the people that in the post-coup Federal Union, the kind of democratic kind Burma that we envision, these are the kinds of young people who will lead to nation-rebuilding efforts. These are the kind of people who I hope could become a bridge to foster goodwill between Thailand and Burma, because if they go back, maybe they retain some fond memories of the good experiences that they've had in Thailand.”

This week on Required Reading, we all called our brothers and fathers. We read A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, one of the greatest American parables ever written. Make your brothers, fathers, husbands, etc read it, also while you are at it, whoever you are, READ IT. Host: Dr. Nic Hoffmann, Mike Burns, and Mike Carroll. Book summary from University of Chicago Press: "When Norman Maclean sent the manuscript of A River Runs through It and Other Stories to New York publishers, he received a slew of rejections. One editor, so the story goes, replied, “it has trees in it.” Forty years later, the title novella is recognized as one of the great American tales of the twentieth century, and Maclean as one of the most beloved writers of our time. The finely distilled product of a long life of often surprising rapture—for fly-fishing, for the woods, for the interlocked beauty of life and art—A River Runs through It has established itself as a classic of the American West. This new edition will introduce a fresh audience to Maclean's beautiful prose and understated emotional insights. Elegantly redesigned, A River Runs through It includes a new foreword by Robert Redford, director of the Academy Award-winning 1992 film adaptation of River. Based on Maclean's own experiences as a young man, the book's two novellas and short story are set in the small towns and mountains of western Montana. It is a world populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, but also one rich in the pleasures of fly-fishing, logging, cribbage, and family. By turns raunchy and elegiac, these superb tales express, in Maclean's own words, “a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by.”
