We're taking a short break until the New Year. But for all you true sickos, here's a short (?) seasonal reading of a great passage from Gravity's Rainbow. Blast it with your family, in the car to visit your relations, on the P.A. system of the local mall as last-minute shoppers scramble to snag the last Power Man or Tickle-Me-Elmo. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all, even the haters and losers. Shout out to "Claus."
Slow Learners continues! This episode covers the entire second section of Gravity's Rainbow, in which Tyrone Slothrop emerges as our clear hero, or the closest thing to it. We speak with filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell, The Color Wheel, Queen of Earth) about his debut feature, Impolex, and about his relationship with Pynchon's writing, literary adaptation, and The Simpsons Movie. Stay tuned for a juicy detail about the mysterious life of everyone's favorite author! Other topics include: John le Carré, Graham Greene, hash-laced hollandaise, octopus programming, zoot suits, Teletypes, the Shell Oil multinational corporation, bad dreams, plastics. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is a slow learner? How does consistency in building good habits help learning? What is the link between working memory and learning speed? How do students fool themselves into thinking they are learning? Why is rote learning being seen in a more favorable light these days? MEET OUR GUEST Barbara Oakley, Ph.D., PE is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan; Michigan's Distinguished Professor of the Year; and Coursera's inaugural “Innovation Instructor.” Her work focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior. In this episode we are joined by Professor Robin Celikates to discuss the big “method” question in critical theory: What is it doing, and why? Since Marx, this tradition has had a special connection to emancipatory struggles, so we talk about how that works (or doesn't) in relation to contemporary debates about civil disobedience and migration. patreon.com/leftofphilosophy | @leftofphilReferences:Robin Celikates, 2019. “Constituent Power Beyond Exceptionalism: Irregular migration, disobedience, and (re-)constitution,” Journal of International Political Theory 15(1): 67-81.Robin Celikates. 2018. “Slow Learners? Further, if time is a resource, how are we going to use it for fitness? Are we investing in an asset or losing in a liability? And lastly, as chat some philosophy, and learn what it means to appreciate movement. Grab a beer and enjoy!
#7 of Forty Thrive's Top 10 of Season 2 Frances Callier and Angela V. Shelton are real life best friends who met at the world famous Second City Theatre and became what we know today as FRANGELA. But what I thought would be a funny, entertaining conversation — oh and it is — became so much more. We talk mental health, “cancel culture,” why Frances wants to confront Val Kilmer and one of the most important questions you could possibly ask yourself. Our chat is lively, it's super fun and it's a huge opportunity to learn and grow — something as a woman nearing 50, I hope to do each and every day. In these Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what’s real?” & “what matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." We discuss: - Growing up in Surrey in a working class, Church of England community - Joining the RSPCA and being against animal cruelty as a family - Working in a chicken slaughter-house in 1973. An experience that changed everything - Going vegetarian in 1974, only knowing 2 vegetarians - Arguments with mum about going vegetarian + her going veggie without Kim noticing - Going vegan (with mum, then family) in 1976 - Being the 2nd employee at Compassion in World Farming, then a lifetime in animal advocacy - Theosophy's themes of connectedness and opposing animal cruelty - Learning philosophy as an animal advocate - Making a clear break from Christianity - Having a personal belief system: 4 key values, but not labelling with any spiritual system - Camberley Kate's care for non-humans and feeling outrage over how we treat other animals - Compassion as the first key value. Identifying with the experience of other sentient beings and being motivated to help - And much more...! Are you growing spiritually? Do you know more today than you did last year? Spiritual growth is a connection to the Lord. You have to understand who He is, what He's done for you and continues to do for you on a daily basis. You are commanded to grow spiritually. In 2 Peter 3:18, the Bible says, “Grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” The objective of spiritual growth is for you to become more and more like Jesus Christ. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, God the Holy Spirit comes to indwell us and lives in us and begins the process of making us more like Him, conforming us to His image. If you are going to grow spiritually it takes three things: the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the living Word of God, and a well-qualified pastor to teach it to you. The Christian life is lived in your mind. It's lived where you think. Your soul has a mentality. Your soul has volition. What you think and what you do has a tremendous impact on your life. If you don't think right you can't do right. Full Transcript: https://rhem.pub/735-transcript --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rick-hughes/message

Megan is a total doll and a writer for The Soul Man on TV Land. She can be seen all over the TV and the movies including Kroll Show and Slow Learners! Marshall likes rules more than sports. Super Bowl ads are as absurd as ever. And we were featured on iTunes' New and Noteworthy list :) We had a blast discussing this stuff and hope you enjoy listening! If you do, we'd appreciate a rating on iTunes.
