Category creation isn't reserved for B2B folks alone. And we've talked at length how much B2B SaaS businesses have to learn from their B2C counterparts. Today, on The SaaS Brand Strategy Show, we take a heaping dose of learning from today's guest, Aaron Provine, President at Geartrade—an UnNew Outdoor gear marketplace, based in Utah. In this episode, we put Aaron in the hot seat, and grill him on where Geartrade came from, how their opportunity emerged, and the work his team did to set themselves apart and capitalize on that opportunity. Knowing they needed to stand out in the world of gear marketplaces across the internet, Geartrade opted to go the category creation route. The clearly defined their point of view, named it, and aligned their team around it, spurring massive growth over the past three years. Hop in and take a ride through the success story of a B2C brand that created a category, reaped the benefits, and continues to own that space in the market, seeing the value continue to pay out dividends this day. About DRMG: SaaS Brand Strategy (SBS) isn't about the colors you use, or the typeface you choose. It's about the category you design and the story you tell. DRMG exists to help SaaS businesses find their magic bullet, load it, and fire it into the market. The companies we work with come out the other side with differentiation, defined categories, and the messaging to back it up. They're organizationally aligned, inspired, and ready to tell a better story—and win. Own the brand that drives demand. With DRMG. Send us an email at: hi@drmg.co Learn more at: drmg.co

“That was actually Darwin's hypothesis in observing his own son and he writes about this in “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.” He writes about this incipient laughter – he was the first one to recognize this as a built-in response that the baby has that really pulls the baby into the adult world or pulls adults into the infant world. It is such an important emotional connection."     Episode Description: We begin with recognizing the profound pleasure of sharing in an infant's laughter. Gina walks us through the stages of involuntary smiling, which begins in utero, to voluntary laughing which begins at about 6 weeks of age. We discuss the influence of parents on whether a baby finds something funny. We also consider ‘incongruity' and how it reveals the baby's 'theory of mind' - what the baby understands about how others' minds work. We come to appreciate teasing, which begins at around 6 months of age, and how it too reflects the baby's awareness of others' expectations. We also learn about the counterintuitive association between secure attachment and laughing. We close with Gina sharing with us her personal history that introduced her to the world of laughing infants.    Our Guest: Gina Mireault, Ph.D. is a Developmental Psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Northern Vermont University (USA). Her research focuses on humor development in the first year of life. She investigates how infants detect humorous events with implications for understanding critical developmental milestones like ‘theory of mind', attachment security, and cognitive development. Dr. Mireault's research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Vermont Biomedical Research Network. Her work has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals including Human Development, Current Biology, and Infancy as well as in popular media outlets like The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Science Daily, CNN.com, WebMD, American Baby, Parenting, and Salon. Lie to an Insurer and Lose Everything https://zalma.com/blog False swearing is a special category of misrepresentation or concealment because it is made under oath. In criminal law, false swearing is called perjury. If there was any false swearing as to the property that was the subject of the insurance, it vitiated that policy; if there was false swearing as to the meat and corn, it vitiated the policy taken out upon those articles. The instruction, in effect, told the jury, that if they believed there was false swearing with respect to the meat and corn, the result would be to vitiate policy and that the plaintiff would not be entitled to recover the policy benefits. [Williams v. Va. State Ins. Co, 55 S.E. 680, 106 Va. 259 (1906)] In order for a "false swearing" to void an insurance policy, the false swearing must have been willful, made with respect to a material matter, and made with the intent to deceive the insurer. [Gould v. M.F.A. Mutual Insurance Company, 331 S.W.2d 663, 669 (Mo.App.1960); Joiner v. Auto-Owners Mut. Ins. Co., 891 S.W.2d 479 (Mo. App. 1994)] Where an insurance policy provides that an insured's concealment, misrepresentation, fraud, or false swearing voids the policy, the insured must have actually intended to defraud the insurer. [West v. Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. of Michigan, 402 Mich. 67, 259 N.W.2d 556 (1977)] Under Michigan law, fraud must be proved by clear and convincing evidence, [Disner v. Westinghouse Electric Corp., 726 F.2d 1106, 1109-11 (6th Cir. 1984)], even when raised as an affirmative defense. Therefore, under Michigan law, the insured's intent in making a misrepresentation in a proof of loss is a material fact because it is a falsely sworn statement. [Madkins v. State Farm Fire & Cas. (E.D. Mich., 2019)] Mississippi has a different understanding when there is more than one part to an insurance policy. A policy insuring various items and fixing the amount of insurance to be paid on each, is separable, although the premium is fixed as an entirety; and that because the policy is void as to one item, that fact does not render it unenforceable as to the others. [Darden v. Liverpool & London & Globe Ins. Co., 109 Miss. 501, 68 So. 485; Scottish Union & National Ins. Co. v. Warren Gee Lumber Co., 118 Miss. 740, 80 So. 9, 12, and National Union Fire Ins. Co. v. Provine, 148 Miss. 659, 114 So. 730.] On the other hand, in Michigan, even when viewed in a light most favorable to plaintiff, the evidence presented the trial court established that plaintiff's claims for no-fault benefits were based upon fraud and false swearing. Reasonable minds could not differ that plaintiff engaged in fraud for the purpose of recovering no-fault benefits. Because she did so, Farm Bureau had the contractual right to void the policy and deny her no-fault benefits. [Parker v. Farm Bureau Gen. Ins. Co. (Mich. App., 2019)] --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support

What is the purpose of laughter? Is it simply a physiological response to humour? If so, why do people find themselves laughing at extremely 'unfunny' moments, such as when they find themselves involved in a car crash, or when watching a distressing video?  In this episode, I introduce the idea that laughter is more than an expression of humour appreciation and it is more likely to be a means to help us negotiate our way through this unpredictable world, by helping us to deal with some of life's challenges.

If you’ve not already subscribed there’s a weekly email that goes out with the podcast. This week's includes a brilliant article on how small teams seem to be more radical, there’s a couple of discussions about Professor Adam Grant’s work and there’s a really good article on laughter in teams. The laughter in teams article is from some research that NASA is looking at when it comes to casting their first expeditions to Mars. NASA looked at the success of different teams in isolation in Antartica. And it seemed that when there is a joker in the team, someone gifted in the art of lightening the mood it helps the overall morale of the team. I found this one fascinating, in The Joy of Work i talk about the successful Cambridge Boat race team in 2008 whose performance was transformed from a losing practice tie to winning boat race performance when they promoted a funny colleague to the boat. They felt that even though this wasn’t the best performing athlete they all felt themselves to be in a better mental state when he was present. This is really neglected as a component of a happy team and if you’ve read The Joy of Work you’ll know I’m obsessed with it. And it leads on to today’s guest. Robert Provine’s 2000 book Laughter is a real page turner of research about one of the most enjoyable but least studied aspects of modern life. He has also gone on to cover laughter - and other human behaviours in his 2013 book Curious Behaviour - Yawning, Laughing, Hiccupping, and Beyond. Provine is the world’s expert on the subject. When we talked to Professor Sophie Scott in the live episode on laughter at work this time last year she mentioned professor Provine several times, and he’s also been the consultant for products like Tickle Me Elmo. There’s some fascinating discussion. Laughter seems to signal a couple of things, safety and play. He makes a really interesting point at the end about the current state of politics being filled with the opposite of laughter - which is fear and angerThere was an interesting exercise a few years ago (and this was called out in Dan Lyons book lab rats) the exercise was conducted by Dan Ariely looked at the data from Great Place to Work. Ariely wanted to see if they had anything that correlated with stock data, to see if it would give you good investment advice to put money in good culture companies. Great Place to Work has been running since 1981 and each year has surveyed thousands of workers. Ariely looked at the data they had gathered. There was one factor that leapt out. But it was an odd thing. It was safety. Companies where people consistently reported feeling safe at work tended to outperform the stock market average, sometimes by 200%. It applied to physical and emotional safety. The other factor that seemed to correlate was companies that had a strong sense of welcome. If you listen to Professor Provine laughter would be in service of making all of those things stronger. What follows is the science of laughter, why we laugh and what it does. I hope you enjoy it.Robert R. Provine, is a neuroscientist and Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I never met a stranger in my life. Andy Ockershausen: Fred it's so ... Because when you put it out people give it back to you. Fred Smoot: That's what I ... I'm one of those people, I really believe in good energy. If you come around with good energy, keep a smile on your face, you can change the way somebody's day is going. You can make them feel better. And we ain't on this earth long so every day that I get up I'm smiling. I'm having fun. Andy Ockershausen: Besides being a philosopher, which you are, you have a tremendous sense of humor. I've listened to you do some of your radio shows and it comes through. Fred, you're a different person. You're not a dumb football player. You're not even a football player anymore. You're one of us. Fred Smoot: I'm a person and I like to talk to people. That's what entertainment is. It's communicating with people. It's showing common ground and the one thing that brings us all together, that's colorless is sports. There's two things that does this, sports and music. It brings us all together, no matter what, so when we talk and have a common ground yes, I want to talk about sports most of the time but I also want to talk about people and I want to see how they're feeling. Andy Ockershausen: That's what I'm so impressed with you, what you do on the air. I've heard you on Sports Talk. But one of the things we do with this little bit of podcast that we put together is finding out and talking to people away from whatever it is. I'm not interested in Smoot football. That's on the record somewhere. Fred Smoot: You want to know the real Fred Smoot. Andy Ockershausen: I'm meant the Smoot that grew up in Mississippi. Fred Smoot: Collard green cooking for you Smoot. Andy Ockershausen: Church's Chicken. Fred Smoot: Oh you know it. That's down south right there. You got to go down south to Church's Chicken though. Andy Ockershausen: But there's so much to you Fred. You grew up in Jackson. That's a pretty good sized town in Mississippi. Growing Up in Jackson, MS Fred Smoot: Well, it's the capital city. It's a city that goes through it's ups and downs. Things could be a lot better there. It's a city that you would love the people and the food's so good Andy O. You know you're going to get diabetes and you still going to eat the food Andy O. Andy Ockershausen: That's an attitude. But Jackson, Mississippi means a lot to a lot of people and you went to Provine. Provine High School - Pro Sports Factory Fred Smoot: Yes sir, we are the football factory of the city. I was lucky to play with three or four more pros on my team alone. Good at football, good in basketball. We got a couple of Olympians. We put out a lot of athletes at Provine. Andy Ockershausen: Were you a good student also?

Atheism is a belief system, and we can prove it! Everyone and every view is united by the same BIG questions. We're just divided by the answers. Whether you're a strong atheist or a passive disbeliever--we all are responsible to explain why people have dignity or why rape is wrong. Saying, "everyone knows it" is not only not true.  It's a copout. Join Rick Henderson and guest co-host, Rob Lambert as they discuss.

Today's podcast - released on none other than International Podcast Day...yes, it's a thing...is a follow up interview with Evan Jordan of Oklahoma State University. If you are a new listener to the Laughter Research Podcast, you might like to check out the previous interview HERE. Evan has been the lead investigator on a study which has been examining various aspects of infant development. Needless to say, of particular interest to me is the laughter aspect of the research. Evan sought to uncover the extent of contagiousness of positive emotions in infants, with a particular focus upon laughter. You might be very surprised by the findings, but you'll have to listen in to find out more on that. We discuss the challenges and joys of working with infants in research and we discuss the future directions for research in the arena of contagious laughter. We also ponder the possibility of Evan earning an Oscar for her thank you 'Shout Out' at the end of the podcast. During the conversation I mention an excellent book by Robert Provine. Check it out on Amazon. It's well worth picking up.   We also mention the innate aspect of laughter and discuss how infants who are born deaf and blind will develop laughter around the same stage of development as typical children. A couple of interesting papers related to this topic: No. 1 relates to the acoustic profile of laughter in congenitally deaf people: In this paper the authors attribute some acoustic variation between the laughter of hearing people and deaf people as being "Due to a combination of the physiological and social factors that routinely affect profoundly deaf individuals, including low overall rates of vocal fold use and pressure from the hearing world to suppress spontaneous vocalizations." - In other words, invisible social rules influence how and when people laugh. "Deaf individuals report experiencing social pressure to suppress spontaneous vocalizations, as these can be uncomfortably loud for the hearing (Leder and Spitzer, 1993)." Makagon, M. M., Funayama, E. S., & Owren, M. J. (2008). An acoustic analysis of laughter produced by congenitally deaf and normally hearing college students. The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 124(1), 472–483. http://doi.org/10.1121/1.2932088 No. 2 relates to the use of laughter as a form of punctuation in deaf people using sign language: Provine, R. R., & Emmorey, K. (2006). Laughter Among Deaf Signers. Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 11(4), 403–409. http://doi.org/10.1093/deafed/enl008 This paper is particularly relevant as it shows us how laughter is fluidly incorporated into more complex cognitive interactions and it indicates that the appropriate timing of 'conversational' laughter is a learned skill.
