In this episode, we're delving into the haunted past of Oklahoma, a state where eerie tales and mysterious specters seem to be as deeply rooted as the red soil itself. From its storied Wild West towns to its rich Native American heritage, Oklahoma's haunted lore reflects a blend of cultures and histories that have left an indelible mark on the land. We'll journey through haunted hotels that once housed notorious outlaws, eerie museums filled with artifacts of untold stories, and lonely backroads where the shadows of the past still linger. Get ready to uncover the supernatural secrets hidden within the plains, hills, and prairies of the Sooner State, as we explore five of Oklahoma's most spine-chilling locations. Featured Locations: The Skirvin Hotel 1 Park Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102 Beyond the infamous tale of Effie, guests often report the sensation of someone tugging on their bedcovers or catching a fleeting shadow in their peripheral vision, especially in the early hours of the morning. Some athletes who have stayed here swear they've had nightmares so vivid they considered leaving in the middle of the night. The Skirvin Hotel continues to welcome guests, combining modern luxury with a chilling glimpse into Oklahoma's haunted history. The Stone Lion Inn 1016 W Warner Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044 Visitors to the Stone Lion Inn often feel an unexpected chill in the former mortuary room, where it is believed that the residual energy of the funeral home days still lingers. Guests have heard unexplained knocks on their doors at night, only to find no one there. Augusta's presence is particularly strong in the attic, where guests have reported the unmistakable sensation of a child's small hand clasping their own. Fort Reno 7107 W Cheyenne St, El Reno, OK 73036 The old barracks echo with the sounds of phantom bugle calls and the rhythmic march of ghostly soldiers. Some visitors have felt an unexplainable heaviness around the site of the former POW camp, where German soldiers were held during World War II. Paranormal investigators have recorded inexplicable EMF spikes around the fort's historic chapel, where shadowy figures have been spotted in the windows at dusk. Gilcrease Museum 1400 N Gilcrease Museum Rd, Tulsa, OK 74127 While closed for renovations, those who previously visited the Gilcrease Museum reported feeling an intense energy surrounding the sacred artifacts. Museum staff often experienced unexplainable power surges and the faint smell of burning sage when near certain exhibits. Many locals believe that the spirits of the Gilcrease Museum will remain, ensuring the artifacts are respected, even when the new building opens its doors. The Overholser Mansion 405 NW 15th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73103 Besides the figure of Mrs. Overholser, visitors frequently report hearing soft piano music coming from the music room, as if a spectral pianist is still performing. The third-floor bedroom, once used by the Overholser children, is particularly active, with toys moving on their own and the faint sound of giggles echoing through the hallways. Cain's Ballroom 423 N Main St, Tulsa, OK 74103 The venue's ghostly activity often peaks during live shows, when both performers and audience members have reported cold gusts passing through the crowd and the smell of old cigar smoke lingering in the air. The ballroom's historic bar area is known for bottles moving on their own, as if unseen patrons from the past are still lingering for one last drink. Belvidere Mansion 121 N Chickasaw Ave, Claremore, OK 74017 On quiet nights, some visitors have heard a lullaby emanating from the empty nursery, where one of the Bayless children once slept. The mansion's gardens are also known for sudden temperature drops, especially near the old fountain, where Mrs. Bayless was often seen enjoying her evenings. Constantine Theater 110 W Main St, Pawhuska, OK 74056 Witnesses often describe the actress's ghost as appearing during rehearsals, offering gentle applause to performers who catch her favor. The eerie apparition of a cowboy has also been spotted in the audience, leaning back in his chair as though watching an old-fashioned Western. Cherokee Strip Museum 901 14th St, Alva, OK 73717 Some have reported hearing the soft sound of hymns being sung in the old chapel area, and staff members have found objects mysteriously rearranged as though unseen hands are moving them. Paranormal researchers have detected unexplained cold spots near the hospital beds and occasionally catch the scent of antiseptic, hinting at the building's medical past. Oklahoma Territorial Museum 406 E Oklahoma Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044 Beyond the librarian's ghost, the building is said to be haunted by a former student who died in a tragic accident on the property. Visitors have reported hearing soft crying near the classroom exhibits, and some even claim to have seen an apparition of a young boy near the library shelves. Join us for a special guest episode of The More Freedom Foundation podcast, where host Rob welcomes his brother Edward for a discussion of his family's relocation from the bustling streets of New York City to the US heartland state of Oklahoma. Edward shares his candid experience of how national legal changes related to women's health made it hard to embrace the charm of the Sooner State. The fall of Roe V. Wade may be leading to a brain drain that will make Oklahoma a less interesting place for artists, and for business. In this episode, we dissect the impact of Oklahoma's new laws, which range from educational reforms to health policy shifts. Edward sheds light on how these laws contrast with those of New York, particularly focusing on the Republican hang-ups that influence state governance for the worse. Some people have big dreams, but don't work to make them happen. Cody Mayo is not one of those people. His dream of becoming an actor began at a young age. Following high school, he earned an acting scholarship to The University of Oklahoma, where he attended college and met his wife, Casey. After graduating from college, they got married and shortly thereafter moved to Los Angeles. It didn't take long for Cody to jump right into auditions and casting calls. Although there were plenty of rejections along the way, he preserved, and eventually gained numerous acting jobs while learning the in's and out's of the industry. After a decade of building a career and a family in Los Angeles, Cody and his wife felt a pull to be closer to their own families in Oklahoma and Texas and relocated back to the Sooner State. Another big draw in their return was the explosive growth of the film industry while they were away; creating additional opportunities in the industry. Cody's newest endeavor is founding Cody Mayo Studios on Studio Row in Tulsa. As a certified coach, he offers his talent and expertise by providing high level acting classes for film and tv, as well as personal coaching and workshops for kids, teens and adults.

As a bank leader, Alicia Wade notes that we're at a unique moment that won't recur for many years: having four generations, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z, working alongside each other. “Being able to have four generations in the workplace and understand what each of them values and what we can learn from each other” allows not just for top-down mentorship but for cross-generational learning and inspiration, she notes. “I have mentors in each age demographic.” On the latest episode of the podcast — sponsored by Intrafi Network — Wade talks about the community bank workforce and career opportunities and traces her own “accidental” her career path from teller to becoming president and COO of $560 million Valliance Bank in Oklahoma City. Wade talks about the broad range of careers in banking. She also discusses what she's most excited about in the community bank customer service experience. Finally, as a member of the Oklahoma Bankers Association's Government Relations Council, Wade discusses several issues on the radar in the Sooner State, including ESG issues and cannabis banking. On March 7, Oklahomans will vote on legalizing recreational marijuana, and the state already has one of of the loosest frameworks for medicinal marijuana regulation, making the state the “wild wild West of marijuana,” Wade says, highlighting the importance of getting legislation like the SAFE Banking Act passed.

Brian Welzbacher, Oklahoma beer historian, talks about the challenging history of beer and brewing in the Sooner State.
Welcome to June 7th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate feathered heroes and a frozen favorite. In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, you can visit a museum that pays tribute to some of the lesser-known heroes of the American armed forces—the winged kind. Specifically pigeons. During World War II, over 55,000 of these winged messengers carried notes high above battlefields, delivering information that might otherwise be intercepted over radio or phone lines. The American Pigeon Museum & Library offers an in-depth look at how these birds helped shape American history, both in times of war and peace. On National Oklahoma Day, celebrate the Sooner State and all its citizens, winged or otherwise. While the most popular ice cream flavor is vanilla, it may surprise you that chocolate ice cream was invented first. The recipe for chocolate ice cream appeared in an Italian cookbook in 1692, but like most frozen treats, it came from popular drinks that were poured over ice. When the Spaniards conquered Mexico in 1519 they discovered the irresistible Mayan chocolate drink that would become the basis of the first frozen chocolate. Spanish explorer Alberto Garcia reportedly exclaimed, “In all my life I have never made a discovery so fine. This is not a taste, it's an emotion.” On National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, celebrate the scoops that still make us swoon! I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson.
