Turnbuckle Tavern is powered by G FUEL and Official Dick Lazer. Use code TAVERN for 20% off at GFUEL.com and DickLazers.com. Episode 205 of Wrestling Tonight begins in Japan, where Ryohei Oiwa defeated Yuya Uemura in a 35-minute final to win G1 Climax 36 and cap off a tournament that increasingly felt like NJPW finally committing to its new generation. We break down Oiwa's path from qualifying for the tournament to becoming G1 champion, the significance of a final four featuring Oiwa, Uemura, Yota Tsuji and Callum Newman, and Oiwa's decision to follow TMDK mentor Zack Sabre Jr. by taking his IWGP Heavyweight Championship opportunity at King of Pro Wrestling in October rather than waiting for Wrestle Kingdom. Before then, Yota Tsuji must defend against Hirooki Goto at Destruction in Kobe, while Jeff Cobb is suddenly back in NJPW and aligned with Gedo's Unbound Corp after confronting former United Empire stablemate Callum Newman. The G1 weekend also produced one of the strangest moments of the year when an AI recreation of the late Antonio Inoki appeared at Ryogoku, addressed Hiroshi Tanahashi and led the crowd through the traditional "1, 2, 3, dah!" We discuss the uncomfortable contrast of NJPW spending the weekend successfully pushing Oiwa, Uemura, Tsuji and Newman as its future while simultaneously using artificial intelligence to recreate its deceased founder, as well as MJF's social media exchange with Oiwa over their respective headlocks and Oiwa inviting him to enter the 2027 G1. We then head to GCW Homecoming, where former WWE wrestler Joe Gacy, now Joseph Sawyer, ended Atticus Cogar's 266-day reign to become GCW World Champion with assistance from the returning Drake Younger. Drake's appearance immediately generated controversy because of the statements and affiliations that surrounded the end of his WWE tenure, leading to a public apology the following night. Brett Lauderdale then explained his decision to give Drake another opportunity by revealing that Younger helped save his life during Lauderdale's battle with opiate addiction in 2012 and took him to his first Narcotics Anonymous meeting. We look at both the legitimate reasons for the backlash and the deeply personal reason Lauderdale believes Drake deserves a second chance. On the WWE side, Chelsea Green's cracked orbital bone has unexpectedly created one of SmackDown's more interconnected women's stories. Nick Aldis gave Green 30 days to be medically cleared rather than immediately stripping her of the WWE Women's Championship, while Mickie James praised Green's emotional promo as one of the greatest she has seen. Nia Jax and Lash Legend have already targeted the injured champion, Tiffany Stratton came to Green's defense and that decision later contributed directly to Stratton losing the Women's United States Championship to Jacy Jayne and Fatal Influence. We also look at the growing possibility of LA Knight challenging Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank in New Orleans, with AJ Styles publicly arguing that Knight has never been more ready to become world champion. Roman's September title defense is also being built through WWE-owned AAA, where La Parka has advanced to face Penta while Rey Fenix defeated El Fiscal on Raw to reach the semifinals of the tournament determining Roman's challenger in Mexico City. That integration is interesting, but it also highlights the continuing disconnect in AAA's presentation when Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio can regularly lose on WWE television while AAA is simultaneously being used to produce challengers for WWE's world champion. Plus, AEW has reached the quarterfinals of the Continental Challenge Cup with Nigel McGuinness fighting through an injury to face Hechicero, Jon Moxley meeting Jay White, Orange Cassidy facing Kyle O'Reilly and Claudio Castagnoli renewing his rivalry with Eddie Kingston as the tournament moves toward Glasgow and the All In final at Wembley. We also discuss Grayson Waller taking aim at CM Punk and the NXT locker room, and TNA bringing Lockdown back for the first time since 2016 while attaching the bizarre stipulation that Leon Slater's entire 298-day X-Division Championship reign will be erased from company history if he loses to Cedric Alexander.

The Wrestling Mayhem Show dives deep into the increasingly interconnected world of professional wrestling as Sorg, Mad Mike, and TruePrinceofPro (T-Pop!) tackle WWE's growing relationship with AAA, AEW and CMLL's continued collaboration in Mexico, the expanding wrestling landscape in Canada, and plenty happening right here in Pittsburgh. The crew starts with WWE's AAA crossover and the tournament determining who will challenge Roman Reigns in Mexico City. Penta, Laredo Kid, Psycho Clown, La Parka, Dragon Lee, Rey Fenix and more enter the conversation as the hosts debate whether AAA wrestlers are being presented strongly enough on WWE television. They also give Corey Graves credit for putting in the work to explain AAA history and wrestlers to WWE's broader audience—even while questioning the remote commentary setup being used for AAA programming. From there, the conversation heads to AEW Grand Slam Mexico and CMLL, including the incredible atmosphere surrounding the crossover shows, Adam Copeland checking another item off his wrestling bucket list, the unique Bandido/Brody King/Hangman Page trio, and the wild format of CMLL's massive Grand Prix match. T-Pop explains how the elimination format works and why Mexican wrestling continues to offer something structurally different from American wrestling television. The expanding wrestling TV universe also gets examined through Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling, MLW, NWA, AEW, ROH and CMLL. How important is immediacy in wrestling? Does a show lose momentum when its television is months behind the live tapings? And why does wrestling remain such attractive television programming compared with scripted productions? On the local front, there is plenty to celebrate. The crew looks back at 2PW Summer Showdown, including the delightfully unexpected blindfolded Lights Out match, Gianni Michael Emricko and Gorgeous Gregory challenging The Troublemakers for the NWA JCP Southeastern Tag Team Championship, and developments surrounding 2PW's championships. There are also updates from 880 Wrestling's Lethal Lottery, Prospect Pro Wrestling, Enjoy Wrestling and the upcoming Sorgstock. And speaking of Sorgstock: Mikey Montgomery vs. Justin Idol in a Video Game Match is officially on the card for August 28. What exactly is a Video Game Match? Apparently, you'll have to be there. Then things get personal with CM Punk and Kevin Owens. The hosts revisit their complicated history, the real-life stories wrestling fans are already resurfacing, and why these two could create weeks of compelling television without needing to throw a single punch. Plus: Chelsea Green's injury, Johnny Gargano stepping away amid a difficult family situation, wrestling trading cards raising money for the Cauliflower Alley Club, Big Man Tater and his microwave helmet, Tatum Paxley arriving on SmackDown, Mickey Knuckles coming to VCW, and Sorg's reflections after finishing a book about Rowdy Roddy Piper. It's another trip through the increasingly strange, global and wonderfully interconnected world of professionalized wrestling. News Stories & Topics Discussed WWE and AAA expand their crossover: A tournament featuring talent from WWE and AAA will determine a challenger for Roman Reigns in Mexico City, with Penta, Laredo Kid, Psycho Clown, La Parka, Dragon Lee, Rey Fenix and others discussed. Is WWE protecting AAA enough? The hosts question why AAA talent is frequently introduced to the Raw and SmackDown audience without being allowed to score important victories. Dominik Mysterio as AAA Mega Champion: The contradiction between Dom holding AAA's top championship and AAA wrestlers sometimes feeling secondary on WWE television becomes a major point of discussion. Corey Graves and AAA commentary: T-Pop and Sorg praise Graves' knowledge and enthusiasm while examining the awkwardness created by remote commentary involving Rey Mysterio and JBL. AEW Grand Slam Mexico: The Arena Mexico atmosphere, Mexican audience participation, Adam Copeland's appearance and AEW leaning into its CMLL relationship all get praise. CMLL Grand Prix explained: T-Pop breaks down the enormous elimination match and its rotating tag structure, including why it feels so different from the usual American multi-person match. AEW/CMLL/ROH relationships: The hosts appreciate AEW's willingness to work across promotions rather than trying to isolate its roster. Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling: The Canadian promotion's weekly television presence is discussed along with Mauro Ranallo's commentary and the opportunity created by changes in WWE's Canadian distribution. MLW and NWA tape delays: Sorg and T-Pop talk about how months of unaired matches can reduce urgency even when the actual wrestling remains enjoyable. The economics of wrestling television: A discussion of live wrestling production leads to appreciation for how much WWE and AEW accomplish every week and why wrestling remains appealing programming for broadcasters. 2PW Summer Showdown: The hosts recap the show, including championship developments, the blindfolded Lights Out match and Some Guy Named John's spectacular elbow drop to absolutely nobody. Gianni Michael Emricko & Gorgeous Gregory: Their NWA JCP Southeastern Tag Team Championship match against The Troublemakers is part of the 2PW recap. 880 Wrestling Lethal Lottery: T-Pop likes the unusual team of Dev Swayze and Tatiana, while Sammy Suntimer's attempts to bond with Marco Narciso become a source of amusement. 2PW Friday Night Frights: The October 23 Halloween event and an announced casket match are previewed. Enjoy Wrestling's anniversary: Lee Moriarty vs. Amazing Red is singled out as a match worth watching. Sorgstock announcement: Mikey Montgomery faces returning Pittsburgh wrestling favorite Justin Idol in a mysterious Video Game Match on August 28. CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens: The hosts love the early verbal confrontation and dig into some of the genuine history that can add another layer to the feud. Chelsea Green injured: Her orbital-bone injury leads to speculation about recovery time and whether it should affect her championship status. Johnny Gargano: The conversation turns serious while discussing Gargano stepping away to focus on his father during his battle with stage-four prostate cancer. Pittsburgh wrestling trading cards: Falcom Digital Imaging's cards and wrestling-related fundraising lead into recognition of efforts benefiting the Cauliflower Alley Club. Big Man Tater: A gigantic Vader-inspired independent wrestler who enters wearing a microwave becomes an immediate Mayhem Show obsession. Tatum Paxley: Her SmackDown arrival has Mad Mike excited about the potential for increasingly spooky developments. MPX “Who Runs the World”: The chat points out the stacked women's wrestling event featuring a wide range of notable talent. Mickey Knuckles headed to VCW: A breaking local wrestling announcement gets an enthusiastic reaction. Roddy Piper: Sorg discusses finishing the Piper book assembled after his death and reflects on the difference between Roddy Piper the character and the person underneath it. “What We Learned” Breakdown T-Pop: Sometimes the best way to introduce someone is simply to unleash them as a monster. He highlights the AAA debut of a WWE/LFG talent who attacks Psycho Clown, tears away part of his mask and chokeslams him onto a chair. The presentation immediately makes the newcomer feel dangerous. Mad Mike: It was apparently a tremendous week for tater-related professional wrestling. First comes Big Man Tater, a giant Vader-inspired wrestler who enters with a microwave on his head. Then there's Tatum Paxley, whose SmackDown arrival has Mike eagerly anticipating where her character could go next. Sorg: Finishing the Rowdy Roddy Piper book helped reconnect dots between moments Sorg remembered as a fan and the life happening behind them. He particularly reflects on Piper becoming so immersed in the wrestling character that separating “Roddy Piper” from the person himself became difficult, while also remembering his wife getting a chance to meet one of her childhood wrestling heroes. From the chat: Mercedes Moné's wrestling anniversary gets recognized, along with excitement over MPX's upcoming women-focused Who Runs the World card.

Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver return for another packed episode of Kliq This. The guys kick things off with a deep dive into the current landscape of the NBA playoffs, discussing the grueling pace of the season and sharing some classic basketball nostalgia involving legendary players. From there, the conversation takes an unexpected turn as Kevin breaks down his upcoming travel plans to Japan, debating the merits of a luxury cruise versus an immersive private tour through Tokyo. Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver are back to tighten things up with a hard-hitting 90 minutes of unfiltered conversation. After hearing the fans' feedback on the "marathon" episodes, Big Sexy and Sean are scaling down the runtime but cranking up the content. This week, the guys dive into the modern obsession with negativity and why it seems easier for people to complain than to give a simple "good job." From the algorithm-driven chaos of social media to the rise of AI-generated content, Kevin reflects on how much the world has changed since the days of "The Upgrade Game" at airport gates with Scott Hall. Speaking of the Bad Guy, Kevin sets the record straight on why he remembers certain dates more vividly than others, leading into a deep dive into wrestling psychology. The guys break down a classic Attitude Era finish involving Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, and The Undertaker, questioning why today's industry often overcomplicates the "layered" finish. Kevin reminisces about his time in the booking room at TNA with Jim Cornet and the Dudley Boyz, explaining the delicate balance between a "Dusty finish" and the clean, impactful storytelling that keeps the crowd hot without "bastardizing" anyone's finisher. Outside the ring, the talk turns to cinema and physical tolls. Sean gives a high recommendation for the 2022 thriller Gold, leading to a discussion on Zac Efron's career-best performance and the "Australian Confusion Era" of film. Meanwhile, Kevin details his latest battle with a smoked CNS and a stubborn psoas muscle, proving that even at nearly 67, he's still outworking guys twenty years his junior. Our matches in question include an early 80s New Japan classic Lucha affair in 'Super Porky' (Brazo De Plata) vs. Tiger Mask (Satoru Sayama), a classic frenetic-paced late 90s Nitro Lucha trios with La Parka, Silver King & Psychosis vs. Rey Mysterio Jr., Juventud Guerrera & Hector Garza & finally, rounding it out with an amazingly wild, prime era FMW Tornado Tag with 'The Funk-Masters of Wrestling' (Terry Funk & 'Gladiator' Mike Awesome) vs. Hayabusa & Masato Tanaka! We have a good little ol' chat abut Sabu's special (& unique) place in wrasslin'-history & talk 3 of my very favourite Sabu matches! We start with Sabu vs La Parka from 2002 MLW, then a classic mid-90s indie romp that was the '94 Sabu vs Cactus Jack 'Desert-Death-Falls-Count-Anywhere-Match' at the Silver Nugget Casino. Followed last by one of Sabu's most infamous matches; the dreaded 'Born to Be Wired' '97 ECW No-Ropes Barbed Wire match against Terry Funk! A heck of a trio if I do say so myself along with all the rambling nonsense that happens when Jeremey & I chat - from the Godfather trilogy to 'High Voltage' to Cannibal Holocaust! It's a heck of a ride!In my 'World of Chris-Things' intro monologue I chat my recent comings and goings, the question of creative 'burnout', the new book launch and getting out of those creative funk-days.Enjoy!!Check out the Chris Things MOTW illustration in question here: MOTW 87: Sabu vs. La ParkaMOTW 88: Sabu vs. Cactus JackMOTW 89: Sabu vs. Terry Funk (Born to be Wired)ChrisThings.com.au is the place for original art, prints, calendars & much more!Follow us on Instagram: @ChrisThings, @JaimsVanderbeek, @SocialSuplexFollow us on Twitter: @ChrisThings, @JaimsVanderbeek, @SocialSuplexLike us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SocialSuplex/Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/QUaJfaCVisit our website for news, columns, and podcasts: https://socialsuplex.com/Join the Social Suplex community Facebook Group: The Wrestling (Squared) CircleWrestling-Art with Chris Things is the Pro-Wrestling Art niche Podcast of the Social Suplex Podcast Network. Curly” — being charged with child molestation. The ECWA's fourth annual Super 8 tournament, which doubled as a DVDVR message board gathering and and a coming out party for Scoot Andrews.Shane Douglas showing up in XPW and, naturally, shooting on Ric Flair.Raw at the Georgia Dome featuring one of the all-time great Rock promos: “I am The Game-uh.”SmackDown featuring Mick Foley cutting one of the greatest promos of his career and ANOTHER one of The Rock's most memory promos, this time mocking The Big Show's “AAAAHHHH THE CHOKESLAM!!!!!!” pose. The No Way Out PPV featuring Foley vs. Triple H in an insane Hell in the Cell match that was purely nuts and started Foley's “retirement.”This is just scratching the surface, as this show is loaded, so....LISTEN NOW!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 WCW1:49:09 Eurasia: AJPW, NJPW, BattlARTS, BJPW, Capture, DDT, FMW, Onita Pro, Super J-Cup, SkyPerfecTV/DirecTV Japan merger, RINGS, Jd', JWP, & FWA2:28:51 Latin America: CMLL, IWRG, Mil Mascaras, & IWAPR2:37:05 Classic Commercial Break2:40:59 Jim Thompson charged in child molestation case3:07:36 Other USA: JAPW, ECW, ECWA, Norm Connors on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” on ABC, IWAMS, Memphis (MCW & Power Pro), Rev Pro, XPW, & Rena Mero on “Relic Hunter”3:51:50 WWFTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
