This week: Travis has a rail-shooter experience in "Genshin Impact" and revisits Miramar in "PUBG Battlegrounds" (It's like saying ATM Machine...). Kyle, on the other hand, finishes his "Mass Effect 2" run in "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" and starts "Mass Effect 3" all while trying to maintain his composure with that opening scene. Kyle also relaxes to some "Super Mario Bros" and "Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle," and even revisits some classics like "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night," and.... "Monument Valley?" As chat turns less into chat and more into Brad releasing a few emotions from the last week in his life. Before that though they talk games. Stu has been discovering Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle, but there is debate over whether the Rabbids are good characters on not. Seeing as only one of us write the blurb for this, we can say they are better than Minions and get an unfair rep. Brad has been playing two games that couldn't be more opposite. The pretty poor, but fun with kids Totally Reliable Delivery Service and one he considers a modern masterpiece with In Other Waters. Then talk turns to the relief of finally being accepted for Universal Credit and the effect it has had on Brad's mental health, before turning to the importance striking a proper work / rest balance at home. The effect it has personally and the expectations from others once you make yourself available at all hours.
In whatever the Hell this episode is we talk about Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Disco Elysium, The Tick, Breakpoint and Dungeons and Dragons. We also talk about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker for far too long at the end (so if you haven't seen it yet you can duck out then and not miss anything). Mario guest stars alongside Ubisoft's Minion-esque abominations, Parappa the Rapper hands the spotlight to his guitar playing pal, and Tim Schafer goes all weird again. Three great games, talked up by three great guys! Also, learn the answers to questions as varied as: Can Chris continue to engorge his quiz win tally on account of Minty's cross Atlantic phone delay? How many This War of Mine scenarios will Jonathan play through before he suffers a case of mental distress not too dissimilar to the games protagonists? How has Minty spent his tax rebate?

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where we are continuing our Castlevania discussion with the beloved PlayStation classic. We talk about how the structure encourages a natural and player-led exploration as well as some deep diving into weapon mechanics, among other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to Olrox (in theory) Issues covered: bosses that feel optional, getting health or heart-ups, the tightness of the Metroid structure vs the more explorative Castlevania, feeling like your order is the natural and correct one, picking your rabbit holes, looking at the map and combing over spaces you weren't able to get, being unable to figure out a room, warp points and mysteries of the game, fighting area fatigue by warping other places, avoiding wall levels/missions, hitting a rough area and returning to it, the shared lineage with the Dark Souls games, difficulty differences, the depth of gearing up your character, the depth of some weapons and surprises, analysis/paralysis, picking the obvious dumb thing, respec-ing, flexibility of approach, streamlining combat in Diablo vs this, getting so pulled in, seeing why the Metroidvania term exists, little enemy surprises, comparing play time and level, rock-paper-scissors combat in Metroid vs Castlevania, leveling/grinding for health and heart-ups, having specific constraints you know will be true of the player or not, comparing Metroid to a Rubik's Cube and Castlevania to a jigsaw puzzle, the Librarian and the training videos, grinding resources or not, not looking at the numbers, caring about your goals and not caring about XP, always hitting the candles, the inherent fun of the play, blowing your time constraints for this game, software emulation and memory mappers, cartridges and emulation, cut-away buildings, adding three-dimensional depth to a two-dimensional game, nuance in level design, an easier entry in the series due to character controllability, grounding a character's animation, reading the effing manual, callbacks in the TV show, Easter eggs, the confessional, the grave keeper, feeling a connection with a real place vs a fantasy place. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Metroid (series), Day of the Tentacle, Dark Souls (series), X-COM, Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Diablo III, PlayStation, Steam, Nintendo Switch, Rubik's Cube, The 2nd Quest, Pokemon, Castle (book by David Macaulay), Scott Schneider, Tomb Raider, Alex Neuse, Choice Provisions, Bit.Trip (series), Gaijin Games, Warren Ellis, Bloodstained, Dragon's Dogma. After a short break Brandon Shockney is back! He's here to talk Destiny 2, tactics games, review bombing, and the prospects of a Sonic the Hedgehog film!
The Joy of Gaming Podcast, Episode 66: Destiny 2 and Metroid: Samus Returns (Finally!) On this episode of The Joy of Gaming Podcast, we (Rich and Jordan) talk about two of the biggest video game releases of the year - Destiny 2 and Metroid: Samus Returns. And although these games are nothing alike in genre - one is a cinematic shared-world shooter with a focus on grinding for loot, and the other is single-player exploration-based side-scroller - both are highly, highly anticipated and subject to massive expectations from series fans. We discuss both games in depth and offer our thoughts on their overall success - both as new entries in beloved series, and as stand-alone experiences in the modern gaming landscape. But first, we talk about some of the other games we've been playing lately, including the new “Longshot” story mode in Madden 2018, the undeniably stellar Sonic Mania, Resident Evil 5, Rich's re-visit to the world of the PS Vita with Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Dragon's Crown, among others. We also discuss some interesting recent gaming news, particularly the return of the NES Classic in 2018, Super Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle's sales success, the new Tomb Raider movie trailer, Monster Hunter World and its release date, Swery's new crowd-funded game The Good Life, the crazy Fortnite vs. PUBG drama, and more. So join us, as we scour every nook and cranny of the European Dead Zone for Loot Chests and Heroic Public Events, and the Planet Zebes for every energy tank and missile upgrade we can find. On second thought, maybe Metroid and Destiny 2 aren't so different after all. This...is the Joy of Gaming!

As we start accelerating into a sprint towards the end of the year, Kieran and Mike jump into some of this year's big releases across video games and board games with Yakuza Kiwami, Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, This War Of Mine the board game and Flick 'em Up Dead of Winter. Also, Kieran dives back into The Evil Within and finally starts enjoying it. Also, the news and new releases!
We continue our fall games preview this week by selecting a few random titles to cover. During "What We Played" Eric Played some Madden 18, Dan played the Destiny 2 Beta on PC and a few hours of Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle. After the episode, Dan and Corey continue their Game of Thrones recap with the season finale, The Dragon and the Wolf.
A JAM PACKED EPISODE this time! Those Overwatch Anniversary skins look AWESOME. Let's play with these new fangled fidget spinners we've been hearing about, and maybe see some blood. We analyze the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi images. Venom is not going to be a good movie, and we're worried for the Uncharted movie. Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle looks like a mistake. Red Dead Redemption 2 delayed, maybe to release on PS5...??? Far Cry 5 looks fantastic (from the teasers). ALL THIS AND MORE on THE ONLY Gaming, Entertainment & Nerd Culture Live Podcast with the sick trix booooooi.
