Matthew 3:13–17 (ESV) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
This week, College Pastor Drew Humphrey continued our sermon series Relentless Pursuit, walking us verse by verse through Jonah chapter 2. He highlighted Jonah's humility, noting how he viewed his time in the belly of the big fish as a life-sustaining act of grace from God.
Send me a Text Message! We live in a turbulent, conflict-friendly culture that in sometimes is not very friendly to faith. The book of Daniel has much to say to us and our culture. And as I read Daniel's book, my hope is reinforced by Daniel's life. Because of Daniel's life, I believe that no matter what happens on election day (or any other day to be honest), the day after God will still be in control of whomever thinks they are in control. That brings a certain sense of hope and humility to my heart. Humility is where we will hang out in this episode. Because thriving hearts are humble hearts!
Judges 6:25-27 25 That same night the Lord said to him, “Take the second bull from your father's herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. 26 Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.”27 So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.Judges 7:1-8 NIV 1 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.' 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,' he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,' he shall not go.”5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.Week 3 (9/1)Sometime this week, read about God's victory in … Judges 7:1-8 – Extra challenge: memorize Judges 7:2

David is the humble shepherd that God chooses to be the second king of Israel. Yet, as David's power increases, his humility decreases. He fails as a king and tries to cover up his sin. But when confronted with his sin, David is willing to lose everything to be made right with God. Pastor Matt reveals how God desires humble hearts more than impressive deeds. Where is my heart with God? What does it look like to have a heart that is fully committed to God? Message Delivered: 6/16/2024
May the God of Wonders Bless You!
Read Philippians 2: 3-8.1. What does humility mean to you? Why is humility important, especially in the church?2. What does it mean to truly forgive? Why is forgiveness important, especially in the church?3. Do you ever find it hard to ask for forgiveness and/or forgive others? If so, why do you think that is?4. Pastor Mick said that forgiveness is transformative. What do you think he meant by that? Have you ever experienced forgiveness (whether giving or receiving) to be transformative in your life and relationships?5. There's a popular saying, or adage, that says, “Hurt people, hurt people.” What does this mean? Have you experienced this personally? How might this help to explain people's words and actions in the midst of our denominational turmoil?6. Who are you still holding in unforgiveness? How does that affect your own life? What do you need to do?7. Pastor Matt often tells people, “I see you, I hear you, I love you; and there's nothing you can do about it.” How does this get to the heart of the gospel? How might the church (and world) be different if we all practiced this more intentionally?8. Why do you think Pastor Mick says that “Forgiveness” undergirds this series focusing on being “Humble, Hopeful, Healed and Whole”? What do you hope you (and the church) will learn from this series? What changes are needed, both individually and collectively, as a church?Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, forgive us for all the times we have been anything but humble, repentant and forgiving. Forgive us for all the times when our words and actions toward our brothers and sisters in Christ do not reveal your love to the world around us. Forgive us for all the times we have been more like stumbling blocks than building blocks for the faith of those around us. Help us do better. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, transform our hearts and our minds so we can be your true disciples, good and faithful servants who practice humility, forgiveness, reconciliation and unity. Transform us into the humble and forgiving community that you call us to be, for the building of your kingdom and the glorification of you holy name. We pray all of this, Lord Jesus, in your precious, holy and strong, strong name. Amen.

"Unity with One Another Only Through Humble Hearts" | Philippians 2:1-4 | Pastor Justin Abercrombie
Hello and welcome to "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast." Today, we journey through the life of David, the shepherd-turned-king, and explore his ability to hear and express God's whispers despite his humble beginnings. Our guiding verse for today comes from 2 Samuel 23:2: "The Spirit of the LORD speaks through me." These words echo a profound truth that God's voice can find expression through the most humble hearts. Let's delve deeper into three key points that this narrative reveals:Point 1: God Chooses the Humble: The story of David demonstrates that God doesn't exclusively select the religious elite or the academically proficient to convey His message. He speaks through individuals from all walks of life, from shepherds and farmers to kings and servants, and even through nature. All that is required is a heart yielded to Him.Point 2: The Prerequisite of a Heart for God: David, though an ordinary shepherd boy, lived an extraordinary life because of his heart for God. If we desire for the Spirit of God to speak through us, our first and foremost requirement is a passionate love for God, a fervent pursuit of Him above all else. It is in this intimate relationship with God that we find ourselves qualified to express His heart.Point 3: The Power of God's Whisper: Recognizing God's whispers and allowing them to flow through us is not a divine privilege confined to a select few. The Spirit of the Lord is more than willing to speak through those in intimate fellowship with Him. Our qualification lies not in our earthly stature but in knowing and expressing His heart. In conclusion, David's life serves as a powerful reminder that God's whispers can find resonance in any heart yielded to Him. It invites us to reflect on our own relationship with God and to continually cultivate a heart that is eager and ready to both hear and express His whispers. As you journey in faith, take inspiration from David's life. Allow your love for God to be the guiding force in your life, and let His Spirit find expression through you. Remember, God's whisper holds the power to transform lives, and He invites you to be a conduit of this divine power.Let's close with a prayer: "Spirit of God, make our hearts zealous for You. Just as You spoke through David, let Your words flow through us. Cultivate within us hearts that are drawn closer to You each day. Let us be vessels through which Your divine whispers find expression. Amen."Thank you for joining us on today's episode of "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast." In this episode of Pray the Word on Jeremiah 23:16–18, David Platt encourages us to live our lives in humility with eyes opened to God.
Jesus had a beef with the many of Jewish religious leaders of His time. In some cases these leaders were doing things or teaching things that were unnecessarily burdensome; in other cases they lacked integrity; in other cases they were violently opposed to everything God was doing in Jesus. In talking to his disciples about these leaders, he often used a unique word: “Woe!” “Woe to you when all speak well of you …!” (Luke 6:26) “Woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds; and neglect justice and the love of God…” (Luke 11:42) “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry….” (Luke 6:25). These “Woes” are teaching words for us today, pointing us to the way that Jesus calls us to love God and love others. During the season of Lent, we will be taking a step back and trying to hear whatever Jesus might have for us in these “Woes” by imagining them as “Whoas!” We are going to take the time to listen to Jesus, who says in each of these statements, “Whoa! Stop where you are! Remember the things and the people that I value, and come back! Embrace those things that I value!” Listen as Pastor Clint explores Jesus' woe to the major religious centers of His day, and what this teaches us about the Christianity: that it is not a story of religious insiders and outsiders, but a story of stubborn hearts and humble hearts. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood, as to understand. To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive And it's in pardoning that we are pardoned And it's in dying that we are born...To eternal life." -The prayer of St. Francis Join or follow us below: Facebook: www.facebook.com/thespringmid... This week, we're continuing our sermon series on spiritual gifts. This sermon is very practical and filled with biblically based teaching on what exactly spiritual gifts are and how they are completely unique to each Christian. For those of you who like to feel extra special (like me), this ones a good one for your sense of purpose in life. There's even a graphic for all you visual learners out there. Chances are, you've got a couple of the gifts that are mentioned in this sermon and you might feel a little nudge nudge from the Holy Spirit to start exploring some of them. And if you're wondering: does this PCA pastor address the spiritual gift of interpreting tongues and languages? Yes he does, but at the end, so no skipping ahead. "Hey, That's My Seat!" Ugh. Don't you just dread looking up at a stranger at hearing those words, "Hey, that's my seat." It's inhospitable in church, embarrassing at banquets, and can be very awkward at the beginning of a three hour flight. But, Jesus sees these situations as opportunities to build our character and grow the kingdom in his teaching in Luke 14, so let's dive into what Jesus had to say about compassion, humility, hospitality and our seating charts.
How do we face the challenge to pursue humility through an attitude of service and hope? Listen in as David shares from Paul's letter to the Philippians.

Prayer is how we stay close with the Lord. It is not about getting what we want, but rather it is about how to become what God wants us to be.

Humble Hearts- by Robert Johnson The post Humble Hearts appeared first on Hixson Presbyterian Church.
Tonight we're examining some tug-a-war pulls that James ch. 4 says competes for our heart's devotion. Conditions of having an elevated heart or a divided heart can get us detoured from the kind of heart God most desires: humble hearts. A humble heart is an open heart before God, a yielded heart to God and one with no secret compartments where we restrict His access.
Brian Kettles: Luke 18:1-17; The persistent widow, humble tax collector and the children flocking to Jesus reveal the heart Jesus is after.
