And the LA Galaxy didn't really have an answer. Nor did they have any width or wingers. So why are significant changes expected over the first half of this season? On today's show, host Josh Guesman (Kevin Baxter is on Vacation) talks about the Galaxy's 3-1 loss to Dallas and why there's much to be desired outside of the Galaxy's midfield. Josh will start by breaking down the game into sections. He'll talk about Dejan Joveljic, who scored a goal but was mostly absent on the night, and the defense that looked like they didn't know how to play together. Why was Josh hyped about Jalen Neal and Preston Judd making their MLS debuts? And why could all back four positions be changed around? Could the Galaxy's backline feature three players under 22? And why would the Galaxy be wise to get that going as soon as possible? Plus, what do the current left-back rumors say about Greg Vanney's trust in Raheem Edwards? And could Edwards be the winger you've been waiting for? We've got a great little show for you today. And we've delighted you could join us!

LAFC has knocked Carson out of the playoffs (again) behind a spectacular performance by #99 (again), and you can hear all about it here on Episode 221! Though we still have two more wins to go, tonight we celebrate LAFC's 3-2 triumph over the Galaxy!Somehow, after 17 matches in the Clasico Angelino, this rivalry still gives us magic every. single. time! LAFC went up early, something we thought we must do in order to win, behind a beautiful ball from Carlos Vela and an even better box out by Denis Bouanga to create enough space to finish. Right before the half, Samuel Grandsir draws the visitors back level with a strike from relative distance off a bad clearance. Both sides escape to the locker rooms level at 1. And the fireworks had just begun! With Captain Carlos coming off after about 75 minutes for Mahala, nervous time had clearly started. But this season's Ghanian game changer made a beautiful run into the box as Ryan Hollingshead's cross came through. Upon getting a small touch on it, the ball found Denis on the back post, and just like that, it's a brace for Bouanga! All LAFC had to do was hold on. Oops.Super sub Dejan Joveljic's rocket in the 84' drew us back level, but the man who has been our most consistent scorer for the last two seasons, Chicho Arango, would pull a rabbit out of a hat in stoppage! After a perfect Kellyn corner, the ball pinballed to Chicho's feet, and he simply doesn't miss from there! The Banc erupts, LAFC wins, 3-2, and we are back in the Western Conference Final! Also on this episode, Filly gets the hiccups while his cats run amok, Scarf looks after a player's child (?), and we send some lovely parting shots Raheem Edwards' way. Until 222, enjoy 221!

And Riqui Puig rescued a point for the Galaxy when all hope seemed lost. But Puig wasn't the only bright spot. Douglas Costa surprised everyone when he came onto the field, scored a set-piece goal, and then played defense. Who was that guy? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Christian Miles talk about the Galaxy's 2-2 draw with Toronto and how many good performances there were. And what has the guys optimistic about the rest of the season? Josh and Christian will start by looking back at everything that went right against Toronto and why the Galaxy escaped with a point. What did the addition of Vazquez do to Puig's ability to play? And why was Gaston Brugman overlooked in this game? And why should you take it easy on defenders? Although no one is defending Raheem Edwards' poor challenge in the box that led to the penalty kick. Plus, there are rumors of Julian Araujo to Barcelona even as Greg Vanney swats them away. Can the guys shed some light on the possibility of a move? Finally, the guys will scour some stats, look at the final seven games of the regular season, and get you ready for a tough match against a basement team that isn't playing like it. But unlike they've done all year, they couldn't get the win. And if everyone is being honest, the draw was pretty lucky too. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter want to discuss some of the details of the match with the Seattle Sounders. They want to talk about the inverted paths of Julian Araujo and Raheem Edwards and push back on the narrative that Riqui Puig was "running in circles." But when you speak of circles, you must acknowledge the banner-tow airplane circling the game with an unambiguous message. And then you probably want to know AEG's absolute positioning on this. Because if you acknowledge the Galaxy don't have the best, then you also have to recognize that they must be okay with that. Josh and Kevin will discuss the Galaxy's continuing roster development by touching on rumors encompassing 2023 and a rumor that will likely send Julian Araujo out of Major League Soccer by year's end. Why was Hernandez laughing at Carlos Vela? Plus, Sam Grandsir, Raheem Edwards, Kelvin Leerdam, and others laid it all on the line against LAFC. And it almost fell apart. Why did Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney use five subs? Why did he take Araujo out? Why was the network passing chart so messed up without Mark Delgado? And who was mostly at fault for the Galaxy not getting that third goal? And don't you worry. There will be plenty of talking about the VAR call at the end. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the LA Galaxy win over Charlotte FC on Saturday night in front of nearly 75,000 people. But there are other topics to cover. They're going to talk some offense, some defense, and whether or not Julian Araujo is a believer in the darkest of arts. Josh and Kevin will start by applauding the effort and the result from the 1-0 win over Charlotte on Saturday. They're going to talk about Alvarez and his wonder-striker and why it's not like we haven't seen this movie before. Does that mean we need to see him starting? Does the injury to Vazquez put Vanney in a position to reward the 19-year-old? And how does Alvarez's game change when he's a starter? Plus, the Galaxy lead the league in shots and key passes, but they've only seen two goals hit the back of the net in 2022. Are you worried that Chicharito, Cabral, and Costa aren't producing? And how much does Cabral shoulder the blame for the poor finishing? But there's a bigger question about Cabral. Are the Galaxy not finding their Young DP? And the defense has been the standout through 180 minutes. What have Julian Araujo, Raheem Edwards, Nick DePuy, and Sega Coulibaly been able to do this season? And why are they the key to success? Finally, Josh raises questions about Eriq Zavaleta, Sergio Ramos, and Julian Araujo. And then he talks about charts. It's a pretty standard Monday. But with a Saturday reporting date, are things about to heat up? Or is the calmness telling? Perhaps MLS is just in a position it's never been in before with a winter World Cup later this year? Josh and Kevin will start by explaining some of the dynamics behind a World Cup that is actually lining up in the league's favor. Does that mean some big moves could take place in the lead-up to the biggest sporting event in the world? And is MLS primed to capitalize? The guys will then debate the pros and cons of the MLS SuperDraft on Tuesday and talk about the Galaxy's history of draft picks. Are the Galaxy just really bad at this? Do they value the college development path at all? or is the SuperDraft a thing of the past? There are a lot of opinions, and we're sure you have your own. Also gone is the only coach we have ever known, Bob Bradley, as he heads north of the border to drink Labatt's and coach his son, Michael, at Toronto. He's been given the keys to the kingdom, eh, as he was named both head gaffer and Sporting Director at TFC. Also gone is an unsung hero who truly has been there from the beginning, Defender of the Banc Tristan Blackmon. Picked with our second ever SuperDraft pick in 2018, Tristan leaves behind a legacy of grit, toughness, and a fun social media follow. Who will play keeper? With Jamal Blackman being given his walking papers and Pablo Sisniega traded to the new Al Raitt FC, Charlotte, Tomas Romero is the only keeper under contract as of the recording of Episode 178. Also gone, as of now, are Raheem Edwards, Jordan Harvey, Daniel Crisostomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Michee Ngalina. LAFC has also begun to re-tool, or “tweak”, as JT put it, by bringing in two players with bona fide MLS Cup experience. The newest Defender of the Banc, Franco Escobar, comes to us by way of Atlanta United, where he scored the second goal in their 2-0 MLS Cup win over Portland in 2018. The Argentinian looks to help the Black and Gold on the wings. Fresh off winning MLS Cup with NYCFC in 2021, then being drafted by Charlotte in the Expansion Draft, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi lands with LAFC by way of a trade with MLS's newest club. In the mold of a Danny Musovski-type, or, dare we say, Adama Diomande, Israel knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and provides much-needed depth when Chicho, Rayito, or Vela are off the pitch.      And don't forget, Defenders… we also get a full season of Chicho Arango, a healthy Eddie Segura, and (at least) a full half-season of a healthy Carlos Vela. (We explain, don't worry.) All we need now is a head coach. And a starting center midfielder. And a starting keeper. And a little more depth. Also on this episode, we celebrate Chicho Arango taking home the Newcomer of the Year Award for 2021, the U19's as they advance in Open Cup Qualifying, and Lee Nguyen's NWSL trophy! We get a new toy in Filimonster Studios, we circle some key dates on the calendar that we are looking forward to, and Scarf doesn't have Covid (according to two tests) even though he feels and sounds like death. Which inaugural team player signed to coach with Sister Jean over at Loyola-Chicago? How is Diego Rossi doing in Turkey or Christian Ramirez in Scotland? And why does Filly now have a vested interest in our eMLS player? You'll have to listen to find out! Finally, stick around for the end, please. We know it's long, but Filly and Scarf both chat about their New Year's Resolutions, or as Filly says, goals for 2022. This may be it for 2021, but we can't wait to experience what's in store for 2022! Defenders Nation, thank you, and we love you! Here's to all the best in 2022 to the millions… and millions!

Episode 173 - Chicho Saves Our SeasonLAFC still has a pulse, thanks to the incredible efforts of our newest talisman, Mr. Automatic from the spot, Christian “Chicho” Arango! It's Episode 173, and we are breaking down all the Fun in Frisco, as LAFC took out FC Dallas, 3-2, behind a hat trick from Chicho!Make no mistake about it, LAFC came out looking lethargic and lost. Despite an early chance from Rayito, the first 25 minutes were all FC Dallas. The team owning the second-worst record in the conference found themselves down 1-0 after just ten minutes. Despite an equalizer from Chicho off a PK earned by fan-favorite Raheem Edwards in the 30', LAFC continued their Jekyll and Hyde act of 2021, giving up another goal right before half to go down 2-1. A halftime speech from Bob and a couple of smart subs lifted LAFC from the doldrums, as Chicho found the net twice more, this time in a span of 5 minutes, to give LAFC the lead, the win, and all three points!LAFC is still very much alive in the playoff chase, just 3 points under the line with 4 to play. Though we will need every point from here on out, there is absolutely no doubt Chicho has saved our season… for now. Also on this episode… lots and lots of Filly Manilow's Chicho Arongo song! Enjoy Episode 173, and please welcome us back into your AirPods in just a few days for the recap of our journey to Minnesota!

Banc of California Stadium welcomes back the Black and Gold for the first time in over 2 weeks, as LAFC takes on familiar and hated foe Portland for the third time in 2021. Unfortunately for LAFC, this one would end exactly as the others did, as LAFC falls 2-1. It's not deja vu, it's forest green Groundhog Day. Stop us if you've heard this before: Portland scores. LAFC equalizes. Portland scores again. LAFC loses. It's incredible to think that all 3 matches between the Timbers and LAFC followed the same script, but like an unoriginal scriptwriter in Hollywood, that's exactly how it played out. LAFC gives up a half-time backbreaker to Yimmi Chara to go down 1-0 right before the whistle. The Moose runs loose at the Banc to pull one back, only to have another catastrophic error by Muri put LAFC on the back foot, allowing Dairon Asprilla to slot home a rebound and put LAFC down and out, 2-1. This episode was a tough one to record, for sure, but boy did we try to have fun. Filly sings a whole bunch while Scarf channels his inner Hans Christian Andersen. We continue to be impressed by the incredible energy and passion of The 3252 while feeling exactly the opposite about Raheem Edwards. Rossi scores in Turkey, LAFC starts a Switchback, and Jamal Blackman is really, really tall. Enjoy Episode 170!

LAFC is finally back at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, 24 days since our last match at home, ready to take on Real Salt Lake for the second time in 14 days. It would be yet another win for us over Salt Lake, but this one felt much more like the LAFC of old, and you can hear all about it here on Episode 155 of Defenders of the Banc!LAFC celebrated Pride Night in wonderful fashion, with LAFC coming out on the front foot in a hurry. 3 saves and a near miss in the first 5 minutes would be a harbinger of things to come, as a beautiful give and go from Diego Rossi to Jose Cifuentes and back to Rossi for the opener in the 10th minute! LAFC could have been up by at least two or three, but we will take the early lead, 1-0, every single time. In typical LAFC fashion, however, they give up the equalizer not long after. RSL beats the Black and Gold on the counter, with perfect passing (and a little luck) from Damir Kreilach to Everton Luiz to Aaron Herrera, and just like that, we are level. Scarf almost got the own goal that he predicted, Carlos banged one off the post, and Cifu somehow misses a wide open net after Kim Moon-Hwan's moment of sheer brilliance, and LAFC enters the half tied at one. David Ochoa was special, but LAFC needed to find the winner. In the second half, RSL would get their first, and only, real opportunity of the half in the opening minute. It came from Kreilach, of course, but Romero, with a little help from Farfan and Murillo, was up for the task. Several near misses and another nice save from Ochoa brings us to the 58th minute, where the birthday boy, Raheem Edwards earns LAFC a present of their own, a PK off a handball from a blistering shot inside the box. However, it still wasn't meant to be (yet!), as Ochoa dove to his left to stop a relatively innocuous attempt by Carlos Vela. Still level. Several subs for both sides, including the return of Chiqui Palacios in the 75th minute, take us to the 78th minute. It's world-class finding world-class, as Kim Moon-Hwan finds Carlos Vela with an absolute pinpoint cross from at least 30 yards away. Despite Ochoa cutting off seemingly every angle, the captain shoots a laser beam over the top of Ochoa's head and into the back of the net! Just like that, LAFC is in line for 3 points and their first three-match win streak since 2019. LAFC, despite David Ochoa's best efforts, wins 2-1 in a match that could have just as easily been 6-1 or 7-1. It was a complete effort for LAFC. Also on this episode, we chat Gold Cup results for both the US and El Tri as we welcome back Brian Rodriguez into the 18. D9U releases a shoe, Tigers collab on a beer, Filly tees up Scarf perfectly as he works the GLA into the pod not once but twice (!), Dio is still without a club, and Tony Leone nets his first professional goal. It's Scarf who rants on this episode after Filly runs down the upcoming schedule. Truly, everything is possible here on Defenders of the Banc! You'll be hearing a lot of us over the course of the next few weeks, with three more matches in 10 days. And it will also be right here on Defenders of the Banc where you can hear recaps, breakdowns, and banter the night after every episode of Season 2 of Ted Lasso, starting July 23 on Apple TV! Lots of fun and lots more to come, but until then, enjoy Episode 155!

Unless you've been under an MLS rock, you know Toronto FC are stacked – even when Sebastian Giovinco isn't around. You also know the ExtraTime Radio guys are obsessed with Raheem Edwards and Victor Vazquez. No surprise then that the duo helped the Reds to a big midweek win. The guys break that down, then shift their attention to a weekend full of must-watch games on national television, bringing in Dan Gargan to help explain what makes Atlanta United special and what's going on with the Galaxy. After the break, it's time to evaluate a quiet deadline day for MLS clubs. Even though there were only a handful of moves made, there will be a couple game-changers entering the league in May. Once that's out of the way, it's time to dream about the summer! Marca's Arch Bell calls in to offer up his top five MLS targets in Central America. You'll want to write these names down. Finally, in the mailbag, the guys reminisce about the MLS teams that they loved before they worked in soccer, David's "Are you watching the game? Was it redemption, revenge or any kind of satisfaction? No, not really. However, there was some confirmation that what happened in December 2016 was how TFC supporters saw it, that being the Reds were the better team, and with key players missing in 2017 went to Seattle and took all three points. It was a big performance from Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore, while the depth players such as Jay Chapman, Raheem Edwards and Jason Hernandez were key to the result - putting faith in the complete roster that with players missing, TFC can still compete with the best.

That's right, an old foe from 2007, much like last week's Chicago Fire, went down to the Reds at BMO via a thorough 2-0 victory. Last week it was Giovinco, this week it was Jozy Altidore who scored the brace and left supporters feeling confident the team is beginning to hit their stride as top contenders. It wasn't just the goals, as Victor Vasquez and Raheem Edwards continue to emerge as key players, with Vasquez pulling the strings and Edwards really making the most of his opportunity. Up next is Orlando City then Seattle where TFC will be put to the test if they can maintain their current form.

That's all TFC needed to get past their west coast Canadian rivals Vancouver Whitecaps in a 2-0 win. Three points on the road were key heading into the home opener and the start of the season is now looking pretty good. Brek Shea's red card opened up the game for the Reds as substitutions of Victor Vasquez and Raheem Edwards were the right move to change the face of the game and lead to the win. Vasquez and Altidore both contributed on each goal and with a week's rest, TFC should be feeling confident going back to BMO Field.
