Dorothy Arzner wasn’t the first female film director in the U.S., but she was really the only one working in the studio system during most of the period that’s known as the Hollywood Golden Age. When the typical person thinks of Hollywood, they think of fame & fortune, the whirlwind of celebrities, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the celebrity hand and foot cement impressions, Groman's Chinese theatre, The Hollywood sign, and many more iconic symbols of glamor, representing the rich and famous…there is another part of Hollywood though, the real people who live there, and some of those real people are disadvantaged and marginalized, and don't often have the opportunity to reach their potential. If they are given that opportunity to fulfill their goals by living up to their potential, they will become contributing members of their community; this community that cares about sustaining their people's future. One of the ways to do that is to focus on youth, ages 6-17, and to instill the belief that they can do anything. Whatever it takes to build great futures is the mantra of one very special organization that is also quite iconic. Since 1937, the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood has provided a safe haven for children to discover, learn, lead, and succeed. It was known then as the Boys Club of America, designed to give boys and young men a ‘fighting chance' to be successful. There is a tremendous amount of history that leads up to 1987, at which point the name was changed to include girls as it was recognized that girls needed that same fighting chance as their male counterparts. The Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood's mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring adults. The Boys & Girls Club fills the gap between school and home. With so many distractions that can have negative impacts on our youth, this is one organization that gets it right; they inspire their young participants through education and empowerment. Contributing to quality education allows for learning and leadership opportunities; there are numerous programs that enhance the lives of the many young members: Girls empowerment, coding, the READS program which stands for Reading Excellence Always Delivers Success, anti-bullying program, the UCLA music program, the Tietjen scholarship program, Great Futures, and I am sure our guest today will fill us in on all of the activities that take place at the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood. https://www.bgchollywood.com

In remembrance of an event that took place 50 years + 1 week ago, Dad tells the story of the internal schism in the Missouri Synod, the "walkout" of professors and students from Concordia Seminary St. Louis, and the founding of a seminary in exile, popularly known as Seminex. It is the founding story of why American Lutheranism looks the way it does today and mirrors the wider cultural polarization, yet with uniquely theological elements all its own. Triumphalists on either side beware; this is a tragedy. Notes: 1. Todd, Authority Vested 2. Burkee, Power, Politics, and the Missouri Synod 3. Tietjen, Memoirs in Exile 4.

Some stories can only be told properly around a campfire in an elk camp. This is one of them. My good friend Stephanie embarked on a two-day horse trip in the mountains in August, and everything went wrong. Stephanie tells the story of coping with tragedy and takes us on a journey to survive. I am very fortunate to have heard the story and to share it with the EatWild community. Thank you, Stephanie. You are an inspiration, and I am happy you sorted things out with Mother Nature. Britespark Films and Discovery Channel are working on a documentary that features the Teton Dam disaster of 1976 when the newly completed dam burst. “The plan was to fill it over the course of two years … with all that runoff the dam was full,” Tietjen said in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio. The dam had visible leaks and many attempts were made to repair and keep it standing, but it eventually gave into the unexpected amount of water on June 5, 1976. The disaster and resulting flood claimed 11 lives and caused millions in damages, and flood lines can still be seen today on some of the buildings that were standing at the time. “When you come into the museum there is a plaque on the wall that shows you how high the water was in the building,” Tietjen said. The Romance Theater on Main St. has a water line that was discovered by Rexburg's Cultural Arts Department. It's now framed for people to see. Tietjen will be coordinating with Lara Morgenstern from Britespark Films for the production of the documentary. Was wäre ein Leben ohne Gewürze? Nix!
