Episode 291 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block on some of the NFL's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing the 1958 NFL Championship between the New York Giants and the Baltimore Colts. How did professional football become America's most popular sport? It's this game.Played on a cold day at Yankee Stadium, the Baltimore Colts took on the New York Giants for the NFL title for the 1958 season.Though it was marred by turnovers and mistakes, this tight game featured so much excitement and was littered with Hall of Fame coaches and players. The Colts raced to a 14-3 lead at halftime thanks to quarterback Johnny Unitas, running back/flanker Lenny Moore and wide receiver Raymond Berry.New York stopped the bleeding in the second half with a goal line stand, and ended up taking a 17-14 lead after a Frank Gifford touchdown reception from Charlie Conerly.Unitas then took over with a Two Minute Drill and led to Colts into New York territory before time expired in the fourth quarter. A Steve Myrah field goal tied the game at 17 apiece which set up the first sudden death overtime scenario in an NFL Championship Game. After stopping the Giants on their first overtime possession, Unitas and Berry went to work and Baltimore ended the game with a one yard touchdown run from Alan Ameche to win 23-17.Due to the game being so exciting and being broadcast to the country on NBC, the American public was enthralled by professional football. Over the course of the next ten years, the league expanded, the AFL was formed and professional football became the most popular sport in the United States of America.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #baltimorecolts#newyorkgiants#nfl

EPISODE SUMMARY #12 – The Baltimore Colts (1964-1968) During this five-year stretch, the Colts had six future hall of famers on the team. On offense they had Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, and John Mackey. On defense they had Gino Marchetti, although he only played on the 1964 & 1966 teams. In 1964 the Colts lost the NFL title game. They went 12-2 that season, and were heavily favored to defeat the Cleveland Browns for the title. Instead they were shutout by the Browns in a crushing 27-0 defeat. In 1965 they lost a heart-breaker in a playoff game to the GB Packers 13-10, on a last second field goal..... In 1953, the city of Baltimore was awarded a new National Football League franchise. The team was nicknamed the Colts, the second pro football club to bear that name in a seven-year period. Earlier in 1947, a Baltimore Colts team was founded in the All-America Football Conference. Three years later, as part of the peace agreement between the AAFC and NFL, the Colts became an NFL member. But this venture failed and the franchise was disbanded after the 1950 season. However, Baltimore was presented with a second chance for an NFL team three seasons later when the Dallas Texans franchise was cancelled by the league. NFL Commissioner Bert Bell challenged the city to sell 15,000 season tickets within six weeks. The successful sale took just over four weeks and, on January 23, 1953, Carroll Rosenbloom became the principal owner of the new Baltimore Colts. In 1954, Weeb Ewbank was named the Colts' head coach and he began a steady building program that put his team over .500 for the first time in 1957. The Colts didn't have another losing season for the next 14 years. Powered by a sensational young quarterback, Johnny Unitas, and a strong supporting cast that included such future Pro Football Hall of Famers as Artie Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore and Jim Parker, the Colts won NFL championships in both 1958 and 1959 and again in 1968. The 1958 NFL title clash against the New York Giants, played before the largest television audience ever up to that time, did much to increase fan enthusiasm for pro football. With Unitas craftily engineering long drives that led to the tying field goal and winning touchdown, the Colts won 23-17 in overtime. Both the Colts and Ewbank were involved in a second game 10 years later that would share ranking as a pivotal game in creating far-reaching fan enthusiasm. The game was Super Bowl III and the Ewbank-led New York Jets stunned the heavily-favored Colts 16-7. Under Don Shula, who replaced Ewbank in 1963, the Colts won NFL Western conference championships in 1964 and 1968. Shula moved to Miami in 1970 but the Colts, who had moved to the new American Football Conference at the time of the merger, won the first AFC Eastern division title and Super Bowl V. Robert Irsay, who acquired the Los Angeles Rams franchise in 1972, engineered an historic trade of teams with Carroll Rosenbloom that year. Twelve years later on March 28, 1984, Irsay moved the Colts to Indianapolis, where they now play in Lucas Oil Stadium.

As an ESPN commentator, he regularly shared his thoughts with a worldwide audience of millions. When Bill talks of discipline and success, his life experience is proof-positive of the effectiveness of his methods. Bill played for some of the greatest coaches of all time, including Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, and Bobby Dodd. His teammates included legendary players like Willie Davis, Bart Starr, and Johnny Unitas. Bill has studied the lives and methods of his personal heroes from past generations, ranging from Helen Keller and Rudyard Kipling to Theodore Roosevelt and Goethe. When Bill talks of leadership and success, his is a personal message molded by his extraordinary mentors and role models.  He is also the best-selling author of TEN MEN YOU MEET IN THE HUDDLE: LESSONS FROM A FOOTBALL LIFE.  "Everyone has the will to win, but not everyone has the will to prepare." Show Notes: The 6 common characteristics of champions = Show up - on time, be early, every time, be punctual, read to be your best Singleness of purpose - Vince Lombardi, "his focus was powerful" Unselfish - Bart Starr - "he literally gave the shirt off his back for others" Tough - Don't make excuses, be great in the 4th quarter, never blame anyone else Smart - Prepared, always last person off the field.  Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry did this Never quit - Never give up FEAR?  Prepare out of fear? - "There is some truth to that."  "Everyone has the will to win, but not everyone has the will to prepare." Personality, GRIT, Heart, Soul -- "Keeping prepping when others aren't" The difference between good and great coaches? Bobby Dodd (Georgia Tech) was a great coach.  A great coach can change your life.  They study the game so intently.  They intimidate other coaches with their brain. Vince Lombardi would not tolerate prejudice or racism.  He had more African-American players than anyone else.  He was so precise in his methodology. Don Shula had the ability to build relationships with each player How can this be translated to the business world? Reach inside the souls of the leaders -- the gift we have is "Magna Nimitas" -- Greatness of spirit. Each person has a unique spirit - it's beautiful.  WE have brilliance within us. Directly challenging the leaders to understand their people Narcissism destroys leaders Bill sat down with his players and went over their goals We all need to have our own board of personal advisors, mentors Bill's 4th year at Georgia Tech -- John Robert Bell said "I know you can play/" --> The impact that had on Bill was immense Bill as a mentor -- He loves doing it.  He hears from at least one play every single day Being humble -- "I know two types of people.  People who are humble and those who are about to be humbled." -- "Ray Nitschke humbled me pretty good" The huddle - We need every teammate on every play to survive.  The huddle is a metaphor for our culture. Why does the huddle matter?  "You can't be racist, sexist, everyone is part of that huddle." Unique exercises Bill does at companies -- Understand each individual unique finger print, joining hands across aisles The importance of intellectual curiosity and asking questions -- "People ought to be skeptical... Ask questions" "There is a fellowship of the miserable.  I love them, but I avoid them." Success?  His wife has helped him understand what success is... It used to be winning games.  He was miserable when he lost.  She taught him that's not a rational way to live. Now success is "Am I making a contribution to the well being of others?"
